The American Family Immigration History Center is an exciting new interactive area at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum where more than 100 million Americans may search for their family's beginnings in the New World. Now, for the first time, the passengers records of the ships that landed some 22 million immigrants, crewmembers and other passengers at the Port of New York and Ellis Island from 1892 to 1924 have been computerized, making it easier than ever to discover your own family history.Five years in the making, the center was developed and funded by the Statue of the LibertyEllis Island Foundation, Inc., which was responsible for the restoration and preservation of the Statue of the Liberty and Ellis Island, and the creation of the Immigration Museum. For visitors to the Museum, the excitement begins at a welcoming kiosk where you can enter ancestors' names and see if their arrival records are included in the database and are available in the History Center in the Museum's West Wing. Once inside the Center itself, in the very place where your ancestors (grandgrandparents) may have ended their long journey, you and your family can log on the one of 41 computers, type in name, and, within seconds, set in motion your own special journey of discovery.Imagine the excitement you'll share with your family as you use the latest technology to sort through a vast computerized archive (档案馆) with millions of records, and see your family's own personal story in America come to life before your eyes.Millions of hours were spent creating this vast database and, if you find your ancestors' names, you'll discover answers to questions you've always wondered about... What ship did my family members take? When did they arrive? How old were they? Were they married? Then, take these valuable records and create your own Family History Scrapbook, preserving forever the story of the past while keeping the legacy of your family alive.1.Why is it easier for visitors to find their family histories in the History Center?。

A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlours(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it’s not unusual for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children. There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of babies — a disease with no known cure.Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat,and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweet little thing" has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone’s pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and thatsomething should be done about it. In my view, it’s time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say,"keep cutting!"1. The doggy parlours are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show ________.A. what costly lives the pets are livingB. where Americans keep their petsC. why children love their pets so muchD. how much pets depend on their masters2. In the second paragraph "to get hot under the collar" probably means ________.A. getting quite hotB. becoming excitedC. feeling extremely angryD. receiving a fashionable shirt3. According to the author, in which field can animals be most useful?A. Food.B. Sports.C. Entertainment.D. Medicine.4. What is the author’s attitude towards pets-raising?A. Sympathetic.B. Opposed.C. Pitiful.D. Supportive.【文章大意】这是一篇议论文。

They discussed ways to protect the endangered animal and double the numbers of the endangered big cats within 12 years. This is the first time that world leaders have come together to focus on saving a single species. The 13 countries are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam. The tiger is one of the world's most endangered animals. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF),the wild tiger population has shrunk 97 percent in 100 years because of hunting and shrinking habitats. There are only 3, 200 tigers left in the wild and the number continues to fall."If nothing happens, the population curve (曲线)is heading straight for a disaster," said WWFspokeswoman Marie von Zeipel. One of the most worrying aspects of the tiger's situation is that many subspecies'(亚种)populations are very small—fewer than 100 animals. This means that incidents such as disease can prove particularly severe.Of the nine subspecies that existed 100 years ago at least three have disappeared. The Balinese tiger(巴里虎)was last seen in the 1930s, while the Javan and Caspian tigers(爪哇虎和里海虎)were wiped out in the 1970s.Jean-Christoph Vie with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), suggested the tiger could be seen as a test case for whether countries are really serious about saving biological diversity."Some people are saying 'well, doubling the tiger population is good, but we have no room'—I've heard that said in meetings, " he told the BBC. " It needs to be done everywhere—especially we need to see a doubling where you have significant populations. " 36. Which of the following is TRUE about theInternational Tiger Conservation Forum?A. The purpose of the Forum is to double the numbersof the endangered animals within 12 years.B. The 13 countries are all in Asia.C. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the buzzing mass seemed to be heading angrily towards him. With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding furiously but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart and his legs pumping furiously, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings(蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital—and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father's words came to him," When you are in a tight situation, don't panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it. "On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson family home. “Bees don't like smoke,”he thought. “They couldn't get into the house.”Andy raced towards the Nelson house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon.Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden. Off his bike and into the cool water he dived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Nelson took him inside and rang his mother.“You'll really need that fishing break to helpyou recover,”laughed his mother with relief.“Thank goodness you didn't panic!”But Andy did not hear her. He was dreaming once again of the fish he would catch the next day.41. Why did Andy fail to notice the swarm of beesearlier?A. He was riding to school.B. He was listening to a strange sound.C. In time of danger, one's mind works fast.CWhy play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules... planning your next move...acting as a team member...these are all "game" ideas that you will come across throughout your life.Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作).Many children's games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调)needed in hunting. Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competitions. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or wars, an Olympic win can mean so much.Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.45. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably means that games can __________.A. describe life in an exciting wayB. turn real-life experiences into a playC. make learning life skills more interestingD. change people’s views of sporting events46. According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?A. It inspires people’s deep love for the country.B. It proves the exceptional skills of the winners.C. It helps the country out of natural disasters.D. It earns the winners fame and fortune.47. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Games benefit people all their lives.B. Sports can get all athletes together.C. People are advised to play games for fun.D. Unit 5 First Aid李仕才一、阅读理解My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants. “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that comf ort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous. This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has been year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids’ triathlon(三项全能).On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together. And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before. All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.Shine on, sweet baby.1.Kelly is nervous when ________.A. boys are around herB. she changes into a leaderC. she is away from her momD. situations are new to her2.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that______.A. the race began in the early morningB. According to a team of researchers,an animal's ability to perceive(感知)time is linked to their pace of life.“Our results lend support to the importance of time perception in animals where the ability to perceive time in a very short time may be the difference between lifeand death for fast moving creatures,” commented the lead author Kevin Healy fromTrinity College Dublin. The study was done with a variety of animals using a phenomenon based on the maximum speed of flashes of light an individual can see before the light source is seen asconstant.Dogs, for example, have eyes with a refresh rate higher than humans. One example of this phenomenon at work, the authors say, is the housefly and its ability to avoid being hit.The research shows flies observe motion in a shorter time than our own eyes can achieve, which allows them to avoid being hit.Professor Graeme Ruxton of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who worked jointly on the research project, said in a statement ,“ Having eyes that send updates to the brain at much higher frequencies than our eyes do is of no value if the braincannot process that information equally quickly. Thus, this work highlights theimpressive abilities of even the smallest animal brains.Flies might not be deepthinkers, but they can make good decisions very quickly.”In comparison, the tiger beetle(虎甲虫)runs faster than its eyes can keep up,basically becoming blind ,which requires it to stop periodically to re-evaluate itsprey's( 猎物 )position. Our results suggest that time perception offers an as yet unstudied dimension in which animals can specialize and there is a considerable range to study this system in more detail.1. What is the research mentioned in the passage mainly about?A. Pace of life of animals.B. Time perception of animals.C. Lifetime of small animals.D. Impressive abilities of animals.2. What does Kevin Healy's comment mean in Para.2?A. The ability of animals to perceive time depends on their high moving speed.B. The survival of fast moving animals relies on their ability to perceive time.C. Animals with quicker pace of life have better perception of time.D. Animals with poor ability of time perception have a shorter life.3. Why can houseflies avoid being hit?A. They can think very deeply before they act.B. They can fly much faster than their eyes can keep up.C. They can process information as quickly as they receive it.D. They can send information to the brain more quickly than to their eyes.【解题导语】本文是一篇科普说明文。

The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at home with her parents. All she’s ever wanted to do is to become an elementary school teacher. However, Hipp has racked up(累计) $100,000 (about 0.67 million yuan) in student loan debt and isn’t able to earn enough through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server to live anywhere other than home.To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of adults who have been moving back in with their parents or never leaving home in the first place has been growing steadily. The Pew Research Center recently reported that 2016 was a milestone in the evolving living arrangements of young adults in the US. Until 2016, the most common living arrangement for young adults was to be living in their own property as part of a couple. UBS Financial Services, a Swiss global financial services company, released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn’t want them to leave. The report shows that 74 percent of millennials(千禧一代) get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and mentors(导师). In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them. Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Group in t he US, said “Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn’t necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest, he said. “They may like living at home and being able to save money.”He added, “While it has held back h ousehold formation and purchases on things, they are probably traveling more and eating out more. I don’t know if it represents a change in moral values, it’s much more common for adult children to live in their parent’s homes because it’s becoming part of the culture.”1.What’s the purpose of Caitlin Hipp’s story?A. To prove the author’s view.B. To introduce her situation.C. To present the topic.D. To make readers rethink about the problem.2.What does the underlined part (Paragraph1) probably refer to?A. live with parentsB. live independentlyC. stay at homeD. leave home3.According to Hoffman, which of the following is true?A. It isn’t necessary for millennials to leave the nest.B. They can spend less money on their daily life.C. Moral values are changing gradually.D. Young adults are living in a different life style.4.What’s the main idea of the passage?A. Why is the number of the millennial growing steadily?B. Why has the percentage of adults living with their parents been on the rise?C. Why are parents willing to help fund for young adults?D. Why do more adults treat their parents as peers, friends and guides?【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了在美国,现在和父母同住的年轻人的数量持续增加这一社会现象。

According to a historian, uniforms were introduced into the United States around 1979 to deal with the problems of violence among students.Statistical reports state that only 15% of primary schools and around 10% of secondary schools in the United States have strictly carried out the uniform policy. In recent times it has become the most debated topic among parents and educators, with many critics stating the fact that wearing uniforms has no effect on the thought process of a student nor does it considerably reduce inequality among the masses.Students are instructed to follow certain rules:for boys, pants, shirts with turtlenecks, sweaters and jackets are acceptable, while in some schools, shorts are strictly forbidden;similarly, for girls, long skirts, blouses, pants and flatheeled shoes are acceptable.School uniforms in other countries such as Thailand,Indonesia,India and Pakistan were introduced during the British colonial period. In these countries, girls in senior schools usually wear broad trousers and boys wear pants and shirts. In preschool though, girls wear skirts and blouses and boys wear short pants and shirts. In other parts like New Zealand and Australia where the British colonial rule was in effect, the uniform system was followed in the public school system. The dress sense closely resembled that of the English students. The purpose of a school uniform is to promote team spirit, discipline and increase equality among all students.Though uniforms have intended to wipe out the discrimination in the weaker section, critics have a different story to say.According to them, uniforms have no such great effect on students. This standardized dress has not helped students remove any barriers and is adding costs to the parents. In many countries, though students' wearing uniforms has produced some positive results,in the United States, the implementation(实施)requires a lot of efforts before we can achieve full success.1.What does the underlined word “masses” in the second paragraph refer to?A.Schools. B.Parents.C.Students. D.Teachers.2.What can we know about the uniform system in Australia according to Paragraph 3?A.The uniform system in the public school follows Britain.B.The Australian students dress more casually.C.The uniform system is the same as that in New Zealand.D.Most Australian students wear school uniforms.3.What's the intention of school uniforms at first?A.To encourage students to be more diligent.B.To improve students' academic achievement.C.To prevent students fighting with each other.D.To promote the equality among students.4.What's the attitude of the critics towards school uniforms?A.Supportive. They certainly cost st year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is the threat of babies—a disease with no known cure.Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone’s pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, it’s time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up formedical experiments.

亲爱的同学:这份试卷将再次记录你的自信、沉着、智慧和收获,我们一直投给你信任的目光……必修5 Unit 5 First aid李仕才一、阅读理解Friendship is one of the basic bonds between human beings. While the characteristics of friendship might vary from one country to another, people from all cultures not only enjoy friends but need them. Many studies have shown that teenagers who have no friends often suffer from psychological disorders. It has been shown that teenagers, perhaps more than any other age group, need companionship and a sense of belonging. The negative consequences of loneliness have also been observed among the elderly. The death of a spouse often leaves a widow or a widower totally bereft. If, however, they are surrounded by friends and relatives and if they are able to express their feelings, they are more likely to recover from their grief.“No man is an island.” In other words, we are all parts of society. We all need the love, admiration, respect and moral support of other people. If we are fortunate, our friends will provide us with all of these necessary aspects of life.As most people observe, there are many levels of friendship. The degree or intensity of friendship varies depending on the personality of the individuals involved and the context of the relationships. Outgoing persons enjoy being surrounded by many people whereas shy persons are perhaps content with fewer but more intense friendships.Everyone is not equally open with all their friends. The degree of closeness is determined by many factors. Close friends can be formed at any stage in one’s life but they are usually very rare. Not very many people have more than a few really close friends. Regardless of the level of closeness, all friendships are based on reciprocity (互惠), honesty and a certain amount of love and affection.1.Who are more likely to suffer from psychological disorders without friends?A. Teenagers.B. Adults.C. The elderly.D.A couple.2.What does the sentence “No man is an island” really mean?A. No man is willing to live on an island.B. Man usually doesn’t go to an islandC. Everyone is related with our society.D. Our society is just like an island.3.What can we learn about outgoing people?A. They like being alone.B. They are fond of making friends.C. They have intense friendships.D. They have fewer close friends indeed4.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?A. The formation of close friends.B. The number of real friends.C. Honesty, love and affection.D. Factors to determine the degree of closeness.【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文。

Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid" and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago wh en a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there." I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not a wake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. He built shelters for them.B. He gave immediate first aid to them.C. He came to stay with them.D. He brought mental health professionals.2.What did the author do when his friend’s mother passed away?A. He hesitated over whether to go.B. He went to his friends’ at once.C. 文章介绍了一项和交友有关的调查,具体方法如下:身体贴墙,膝盖弯曲成直角,根据保持这个姿势的时间长短可以推断出你的社交能力。

1.easily

3.filled

4.to press考查非谓语动词。

ask sb. to do sth.为固定搭配,意为“要求某人做某事”,此处是其被动结构形式be asked to do sth.。

故填to press。

5.knees

be associated with为固定搭配,意为“与……有联系”,故填with。

10.better考查形容词的比较级。

“the+比较级,the+比较级”为常用句式,意为“越……,越……”,故填better。

Ⅳ.短文改错Dear Lisa,I'm glad to receive your letter asked about the present holiday life of Chinese students. Learning together with entertainment still take up most of our time. Besides, we often help our parents with the housework or farm work, that makes us realize how hard we work every day and develop a great love for work. Meanwhile, we take active part in social activities, such as voluntary work. We went out to the streets to collect rubbishes or to the hospitals to cheer up the sick children. We try our best to help those who are in need or make our hometown a lot of more beautiful. We find greatly pleasure in these activities.Yours,Li Ming 答案:Dear Lisa, about the present holiday life I'm glad to receive your letter asked①askingof Chinese students.
