Then he ran back to the main room, making a lot of noise with his feet.He ran in circles around the table, pulled out one of the sideboard drawers, and slammed it shut.“Just a minute,I can't find them,I don't know where Mama put them,"he yelled, then dragged the chair across the room, climbed onto it,and reached up to the top of the shelf.“I found them!”he shouted triumphantly. Then he got down from the chair, pushed it back to the table, and calmly walked to the door and opened it.“Shut the door, darling,"the woman said softly."You were perfect.”The child didn't hear what she said.He stood in the middle of the room, staring at the closed bathroom door.“Shut the door, the woman repeated in a tired flat voice.Every evening she repeated the same words, and every evening he stared at the closed bathroom door.At last it opened. The man was pale and his clothes were streaked with lime and dust.He stood there, eyes blinking in that funny way.“Well? How did it go?"asked the woman.“I still need more time.He has to look for them longer.I slip in sideways allright, but then...It's so tight in there that when I turn...And he's got to make more noise-he should stamp his feet louder."The child didn't take his eyes off him.“Say something to him,"the woman whispered."You did a good job, little one,"he said mechanically.“That's right,”the woman said,“you're really doing a wonderful job, darling. You act just like a grown-up.And you do know that if someone should really ring the doorbell when Mama is at work, everything will depend on you?And what will you say when they ask you about your parents?”“Mama's at work.”“And Papa?"He was silent.“And Papa?"the man screamed in terror. The child turned pale.“And Papa?”the man repeated more calmly.“He's dead,”"the child answered and threw himself at his father, who was standing right beside him,but already long dead to the people who would really ring the bell.4. One great way to make use of the extra time is to go on an adventure and travel. Clearly, I am not a naturally adventurous person, but I have found that takingthe risk and challenging myself to explore and travel to unfamiliar places can be a very rewarding experience.Because I am usually quite busy during the school year, most of my travels take place during the summer. Over the past few summers, I have hiked in the Grand Canyon, explored Niagara Falls, and camped out in upstate New York. Although these experiences are varied, they are similar in that they instill (灌输) a sense of appreciation for nature and a more balanced view on life. When I hiked in the Grand Canyon, for example, I was in awe(敬畏) of the geological influences that shaped the canyon.Adventures, of course, are not limited to hiking. There are many other choices, such as camping, volunteering in a foreign environment and travelling to different countries. In my opinion, adventures are more enjoyable with family or a few friends. There is a sense of bonding that one only gets through spending time together in outdoor adventures. For example, when I was in Boy Scouts, I often went on weekend camping trips with my friends. When I came back from a Boy Scouts camping trip, I often was eager to go outside more and explore the parks and nature around me.Next fall, I will attend college. In the meantime though, I hope to make the most of my summer to explore and travel. Now, I am planning on hiking and camping out in Maine. When I visited Maine last fall, I was amazed by how beautiful it was and the tall trees and coasts that exist, and I really hope to enjoy the beauty of nature there this summer.8. The film is an adaptation of Pygmalion, a comic play by the Irishman George Bernard Shaw(1856-1950).However, the musical version of My Fair Lady is even older, and has been entertaining audiences since 1956.In fact, a new Broadway version of the musical was nominated for 10 Tony awards. The story of Eliza Doolittle, a working-class flower seller from London, and the snobbish(势利的)Professor Higgins, who teaches her "proper English", has never showed any signs of dying out since it was introduced. But why do people still line up around the block for tickets when a new production of the play is announced? The answer is simple: The musical has a wonderful story. Everyone can identify with Doolittle's desire to live a more satisfying life; all she wants is to get rid of her accent so she can get a job in a store and not on the streets. However, it seems that people like Higgin s are always looking down on Doolittle for not being from a fancy family.Besides Doolittle's background, the story and the songs in the music al are also what make it so popular. Audience members are moved when Eliza and her fellow flower sellers imagine what it'd be like to live as a rich person does. This is perfectly summed up in the lyric (歌词),“Wouldn't it be lovely?”The musical also makes people think. It doesn't make sense that one kind of accent can be considered good and another bad. Eliza and her father speak "badly" because they were born poor, while Higgins speaks "proper English" because he was born a "gentleman". That reflects the unfairness of class divisions – a kind of unfairness that still sadly exists today.8. The underlined word "nominated" in paragraph 2 can be replaced by _________.A.Appointed. B.Selected. C.Suggested. D.Directed.9. Why do people like Broadway's musical My Fair Lady?A.People can relate to Doolittle's experiences.B.It's considered the best adaptation of Pygmalion.C.It has won 10 Tony awards since its appearance.D.People have a good chance to learn proper English.10. What message does My Fair Lady convey?A.People from poor families can hardly be successful.B.Women's status has been greatly improved in the UK.C.Social class division is deeply rooted in British society.D.One's language ability and manner are the key to success.11. What can we know about the story of the musical?A.Higgins was described as a kindhearted man.B.Eliza was born poor but fought for a better life.C.Higgins and Eliza became friends after they first met.D.Eliza finally changed Higgins` prejudice against the poor.Sharks and their relatives are some of the most threatened vertebrates(脊椎动物) on Earth. Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) provide homes for countless fish species that are vital for fisheries and aretherefore an especially important ecosystem for humans——and one where the decline of shark populations seems to be especially acute (剧烈的).The study by Simpfendorfer with his team is the result of a worldwide cooperation called the Global FinPrint project. The data analyzed include more than 20,000 hours of standardized underwater video taken at nearly 400reefs in 67 countries around the world. It reveals declines of 60% to 73% of once-abundant(充足的) coral reef shark species at reefs around the worldHowever, the findings of Simpfendorfer with his team include signs of hope and a clear path forward. Their results show that although shark populations in many reefs had declined, some health y reef shark populations remained. The reefs with healthier shark populations had some important similarities: they tended to be in the waters of high-income countries with stronger natural resource management regulations (规定) . A country that lacks the resources to feed its people is less able to sustainably manage and protect its biodiversity. The most unexpected result of the study is that a decline or complete loss of shark species in one reef was not always associated with similar changes in nearby reefs. They found that one reef can be over fished so badly that a once-common reef shark species is totally gone, but another reef a short distance away can have healthy populations of that same species. It is likely that healthy population s can eventually help repopulate nearby areas. The problem is clear——animals that provide ecosystem services that are vital for human food security and livelihoods are disappearing at an alarming rate. The loss of sharks and the ecosystem services they provide represents an ecological disaster that can cause substantial harm to humans. But apparently, the findings have shown a way. If the threat that led to population decline are resolved, then these important and threatened animals may recover.12. Why is Simpfendorfer with his team mentioned in Paragraph 2?A.To stress the result of global cooperation.B.To state the urgency of protecting the ocean.C.To show the severe condition of certain sharks.D.To present the figures of their contributions to sharks.13. Why could healthy reef shark population s remain in some areas?A.Citizens there had a stronger environmental awareness.B.Science and economics were improving fast in such areas.C.The waters in these areas were suitable for sharks to live in.D.These areas took stricter measures to protect natural resources.14. What can be inferred from the text?A.Changes in reefs lead to loss of shark species.B.Humans and animals co-exist in ecosystem.C.It's not clear whether humans cause damage to biodiversity.D.The declined shark species have nothing to do with overfishing.15. What's the text mainly about?A.Acute Decline of reef sharks. B.Potential recovery of reef sharks.C.Global cooperation of saving sharks. D.Amazing discovery of Coral reefs. In an increasingly busy world, finding moments of peace is more important than ever. One way to make you have a peaceful feeling at home is to have an indoor water fountain. 16 And it also offersa lot of calming benefits that are able to positively influence your well-being.17 It can contribute to feelings of calmness and relaxation, making you forget about the demands of the outside world. Indoor water fountains offer a convenient and accessible way to bring this relaxing experience into your home.Indoor water fountains can also improve the quality of the air in your home. As water flows, small drops of water go away into the surrounding air. They can help humidify (使湿润) the environment.18 At that time, indoor heating systems can lead to dry, uncomfortable air. Improved air quality can contribute to a sense of well-being and comfort.Indoor water fountains can help improve concentration by creating a calming environment. Whether you are working from home or dealing with a challenging project, it helps you keep focused and improve your performance. Students also need to be highly focused when studying. 19For those who struggle with sleep issues, an indoor water fountain can be a valuable aid. Listening to the sound of an indoor water fountain can bring them into a deeper and more restful sleep. 20 Besides, having a fountain in their bedroom helps to drown out (淹没) background noise, creating a more peaceful sleep environment.By the time he was 24 years old, Imran Nuri quit his job in a bold move, and emptied his savings account to carry out an ambitious ________ he'd been bearing in mind. Environment.BMy First Marathon(马拉松)A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles(脚踝)was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I was determined to go ahead.I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E.class,the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn't do either well.He later informed(通知)me that I was "not athletic".The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills! The night before my marathon,I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust(重新调整).Not the start I wanted! At mile 3,I passed a sign:"GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!"By mile 17,I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.By mile 21,I was starving! As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact,I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in firstplace had.Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签),I can now call myself a "marathon winner".4. One is never too old to learn.CT-shirts out;uniforms inSchool uniforms are becoming more and more popular across theU.S.A.That's no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the "wrong" clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule-wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers;school uniforms tear those barriers down.As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform,he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets.People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's "creativity." First,as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express theirindividuality. They just copy their classmates.Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths;this should take up all the creativity they have.Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.8. In Paragraph 1,the word "benefits" probably means ______ .A. tasksB. messagesC. advantagesD. differences9. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general ______ .A. help the wearers keep their duties in mindB. prevent the wearers from being laughed atC. are seen as a symbol of powerD. help to create social barriers10. Some people are against school uniforms because ______ .A. they think that school uniforms are too popularB. they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC. they don't agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms11. The author would probably agree that ______ .A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or notB. students' individuality may not come from school educationC. students' creativity is related to the clothes they chooseD. school uniforms help to create equality among studentsDDid your mother ever say you'll feel better after a good cry?It turns out Mom is right as usual-crying really is healthy. What's more, letting yourself feel blue and accepting those feelings will help you feel better in the long run, according to a new research. In three separate studies both online and in a lab, researchers at UC Berkeley evaluated the responses from 1,300 adults regarding their psychological(心理的)health and emotional well-being(幸福感).In one study,1,000 participants filled out a survey evaluating how they felt about the statement,"I tell myself I shouldn't be feeling the way that I'm feeling."Those who agreed with the statement scored lower on tests of well-being..In other words, letting yourself feel bad is better for your mind and mood than trying to control negative thoughts."We found that people who habitually accept their negative emotions experience fewer negative emotions, which adds to better psychological health,"said study senior author Iris Mauss,PhD,an associate professor of psychology at UC Berkeley in an article on the university's website. In a society where the importance to be happy is emphasized daily on the other social media platforms, letting yourself be down in the dumps can be tough.Just remember that true happiness isn't always what people say it is."It turns out that how we approach our own negative emotionalreactions is really important for our well-being,"said study lead author Brett Ford,PhD,an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto."People who accept these emotions without judging or trying to change them are able to deal with their stress more successfully."So next time someone tells you to"turn that frown upside down",ignore them.Embrace your inner feelings for a while.12. How did the researchers carry out one of the studies?______A. They gave the participants different tests.B. They compared their own thoughts with others.C. They studied the participants' everyday experiences.D. They compared the participants' thoughts and their feelings.13. What does the underlined part "be down in the dumps"in Paragraph4 mean?______A. It is generally acknowledged in the field that dreams people have during this time betweenchildhood and full adulthood, that’s around 30, are the strongest and most influential. Yet not enough is known about the repeated patterns of dreaming. Researchers are still trying to answer a basic question: How does dreaming relate to the life experiences and developmental challenges?G. William Domhoff and Adam Schneider, at theUniversityofCalifornia, help to answer this question by examining the lengthy dream series of two individuals, “Izzy” and “Jasmine”. Izzy provided a collection of 4, 329 dream reports from between the ages of 12 and 25, while Jasmine provided 664 dreams recorded between the ages of 14 and 25.Large collections of dreams like these pose challenges to researchers. Until recently, the means of studying dream series was to employ a team of recorders who take the time to code each dream for a predetermined(预先确定的)number of content categories, and then compare their results. Nowadays, digital technologies enable the analysis of language usage in dreams with high speed, accuracy, and objectivity. This marks a revolutionary advance in the science of dreaming. However, itcan only lead so far.To gain more specific and detailed insights, Domhoff and Schneider tailored word strings(词串)for each dreamer, mixing elements of traditional research with digital tools for analyzing large data sets. For Izzy these word strings included “family and s”, “celebrities” and “fantasy”, while the word strings they created for Jasmine included “familiar places,” electrical equipment” and “music”. The researchers used these word strings to identify connections between their dreams and real lives. Surprisingly, the results of the analysis revealed a great deal of consistency(一致性)and continuity in both sets of dreams. Izzy pays much attention to pop culture, and has affection for famous actors. Jasmine is an accomplished musician and performer.“The frequencies of dream elements show the intensity(强度)of the dreamer’s personal concern with that element in waking thought,” Domhoff and Schneider conclude. For anyone who still claims dreaming is merely random nonsense from the brain and mental world, these findings are hard to explain away.8. What do psychologists agree with about dreams?A. Dreams are influenced by life experiences.B. Dreaming is never nonsense from the brain.C. Dreams in one’s teens and twenties are strongest.D The patterns of dreaming are usually repeated.9. What does “it” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?A. The collection of dreams.B. Research into dreaming.C. The digital method.D. The challenge for psychologists.10. How do the researchers conduct their study?A. By analyzing large data sets.B. By developing individualized word strings.C. By identifying the patterns of dreaming.D. By making comparison with traditional research.11. Which can be the best title for the text?A. New tech, new findingB. Dreams: reflections of waking realityC. Lives, languages, dreamsD. The center has multiple projects, but the most famous one is a course to teach news literacy. The course trains students to look for various details that may indicate the truth of the story.Michelle Sheng is a third-year student at theUniversityofMichigan. Sheng finds that students either just stop reading the news or only take news from one source that they trust. "A lot of people are tired of the news.
