语鹅市安置阳光实验学校辽宁2016高考英语阅读理解(二轮)训练(2)阅读理解训练Dear Miss Manners,Friends of mine lost their home in a house fire.It wasterrible.Another friend set up a “go fund me” type page for friends and to donate and help the couple. Many friends, including me, helped with money, meals, lamprey and their dog while they were getting back on their feet.Last week, they sent thankyou notes. My roommate received one addressed to her and I did not. The notes were not in modularized; it was a printed onesizefitsall messa ge.My roommate realized I didn't receive a thankyou note, so she sent a private message to the couple just letting them know I had been left out.I didn't know she had done this until later. The next day, I got a text message apologizing and saying that I had been left out because their friend who addressed the notes must have missed me!(Miss Manners, they didn't even address the notes themselves!)It was accompanied by a picture of the thankyou note, which was texted to me with the message, “Here is a thank you just for you. ”I was a little annoyed.I helped them in their need and didn't geta second thought.I have not responded to her text message. Is it fair of me to consider this friendship over? Should I tell her that I am upset, or should I accept that this rude thank you was better than nothing?文章大意:这是一篇书信文体阅读。

For the first time, researchers have discovered that some plants can kill insects in order to get additional nutrients. New research shows that they catch and kill small insects with their own sticky hairs near the roots and then absorb nutrients through their roots when the insects are killed and fall to the ground.Professor Mark Chase, of Kew and Queen Mary, University of London, said, "The cultivated (改良的) tomatoes and potatoes still have the hairs. Tomatoes in particular are covered with these sticky hairs. They do trap small insects on a regular basis. They do kill insects."The number of these carnivorous plants is thought to have came up to 50 percent and many of them have until now been wrongly regarded as among the most harmless plants. Among them are species of petunia (矮牵牛), some special tobacco plants and cabbages, some varieties of potatoes and tomatoes, etc. Researchers at Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, which carried out the study, now believe there are hundreds more killer plants than previously realized. It is thought that the technique was developed in the wild to get necessary nutrients in poor quality soil — and even various plants grown in your vegetable garden still have the ability. The researchers, publishing their finding in the Botanical Journal of the Linne an Society, said, “We may be surrounded by many more murderous plants than we think.” “We are accustomed to thinking of plants as being immobile and harmless, and there is something deeply frightening about the thought of meat-eating plants,” they added.72. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy's classroom, I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don't know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph.D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.61.“Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.A. a program directed by DorothyB. a course given by the authorC. an activity held by the studentsD. an organization sponsored by Union College62.In the journey, the author was most disappointed at seeing ________.A. the long trackB. the poor housesC. the same trainD. the winding road63.Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by ________.A. a warm welcomeB. the sight of poke greensC. Dorothy's latest projectsD. a big dinner made for her64.What can we know about Dorothy from the last paragraph?A. She was invited to a celebration at a restaurant.B. She got a pen as a gift from the author.C. She passed the required assessment.D. She received her Ph.D. degree.65.What does the author mainly intend to tell us?A. Whatever you do, you must do it carefully.B. Whoever you are, you deserve equal treatment.C. However poor you are, you have the right to education.D. Wherever you are, you can accomplish your achievement.【要点综述】 Dorothy在一所条件非常差的学校获得了很大的成功,这说明一个人获得成功与他在什么地方没有直接关系,最重要的是要付出努力。

Thick, dark, gray clouds had made sure that there was no starlight or moonlight to greet me as I walked out on my porch. Still, I kept the porch light off because I didn’t want to be surrounded by bugs and moths(飞蛾) on this sticky summer evening. I stood there for a while letting my eyes adjust to the lack of light. My dog stood beside me waiting patiently for me to start her walk. It was then, though, that I saw them. First one blink of light at the far end of the meadow was followed by another and then another. I smiled. I recognised them at once as my firefly friends, who always showed up at this time of year.I got so much joy watching them first as a child and then as an adult. They never became dull or boring and they always filled me with delight. When I was little I used to sit in the grass and watch them slowly fly around blinking on and off. I never caught and put one in a jar as some kids did because I was afraid I might kill it and I never wanted to hurt these messengers(信使) of light. Their time on earth was so brief as it was. I tried to enjoy them each time they were here. It always saddened me when they disappeared in the fall and it always made my heart sing when they reappeared the next summer.I think I enjoy these little fireflies so much because I can see that we are like them in a lot of ways. Our time here on earth is brief. Often our light and love are more like blinks rather than a steady shine. Let’s share our light and love while we are here then.4.Why did the author turn off his porch light?A.To avoid some insects.B.To adapt to surroundings.C.To search for his dog.D.To greet special friends.5.What can we know about fireflies?A.They always frightened the author.B.Most kids caught and killed them.C.The author watched them every night.D.They usually brightened the author.6.What does the author mainly convey through the story?A.Value our short life in the world.B.Protect fireflies as well as possible.C.Devote ourselves as much as possible.D.Share as many inspiring stories as possible.7.What can be the best title for the text?A.A Special Summer NightB.Messengers of LightC.Human’s Best FriendsD.Fireflies — Shinning ForeverC(2021·河北唐山二模)A 293-million-mile journey of the NASA Perseverance rover(探测器) to Mars ended successfully on February 18, 2021, with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezero Crater. The car-sized, six-wheeled rover, nicknamed Percy is the US space agency’s biggest and most advanced explorer to date. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial(微生物的) life on Mars.Landing on Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet’s gravitational pull causes the approaching spacecraft to go faster to high speeds, while its thin atmosphere—just 1 percent of the Earth’s—does little to help slow it down as it approaches the surface. The scientists had to reduce Percy’s 12,000 mph speed to a safe landing speed of less than five mph—in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle also had to be precise 12 degrees—any steeper, and the spacecraft would burn up; any flatter, and it would get lost in space. It is no wonder that the final approach is often referred to as the “seven minutes of terror”.Upon attaining a manageable speed, Percy briefly flew over the Martian surface to seek out the perfect landing spot. Its complex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database to find the best location. The NASA scientists spent the next two months testing Percy’s scientific instruments. Once ready, the rover would begin to carry out its mission.“Perseverance is the smartest robot ever made but confirming that microbial life once existed carries an unusually large burden of proof,” said Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary ScienceDivision.“While we’ll learn a lot with the great instruments we have aboard the rover, it may very well require the far more well-equipped laboratories and delicate instruments back here on Earth to tell us whether our samples carry evidence that Mars once harboured life.”8.What is the extraordinary challenge for the rover to land on Mars?A.The speed reduction.B.The atmosphere analysis.C.The location search.D.The time management.9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.Ways to find the precise entry angle.B.Consequences of a wrong entry degree.C.Factors to survive “the seven minutes”.D.Reasons for the necessity of speed reducing.10.What does “it” refer to in paragraph 4?A.The spot.B.The area.C.The system.D.The surface.11.What can be inferred from Lori Glaze’s words?A.Instruments aboard the rover are not quite reliable.B.Perseverance is able to collect enough evidence needed.C.Man still has a long way to go to prove life was on Mars.D.Samples of Mars will be returned soon to our labs on Earth.DI told my friend Graham that I often cycled two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there was a big hill on the route. He replied,“You mean fortunately.” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided. My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationary exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote,“The character cannot be developed with ease. Only through experiences of suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Some are of our own making but many confront us through no fault of our own. While we cannot choose adversity, we can choose our attitude towards it.Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aviators in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said,“Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Make up your mind, andyou’ll never use crutches or a stick, and then have a go at everything. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible.”The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won. Nevertheless, there is still the problem of how you change your attitude towards adversity.12.Which of the following is true according to the author of the passage?A.Those who want to achieve success can’t expect to live an easy life.B.Climbing hills on bicycles is the best way to take exercise.C.Going to a gym is greatly beneficial to people’s health.D.People’s attitude towards hardships is the only factor of their success.13.By quoting what Douglas Bader said, the author intends to tell us “” .A.Failure is the mother of successB.A bad workman quarrels with his toolsC.Nothing is difficult to the man who will tryD.If you risk nothing, you will have nothing14.Following this passage, the author will further talk about .A.how his friend helped him to change his attitude towards the challenge he facedB.why it is important to keep optimistic in the face of troubleC.what steps to take to change your attitude towards the difficulties you faceD.what great people have in common15.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?A.Different attitudes towards misfortuneB.Face difficulties with a smileC.Nothing is impossibleD.Life is full of adversityⅡ.七选五(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)(2021·安徽安庆高三二模)How to Make a Classroom Management PlanStudents need to feel comfortable and safe in order to learn effectively. As an educator, you need to manage your classroom in such a way that you create this sort of environment. A classroom management plan is a strategy you create and carry out. 16 It can help you deal with negative behaviours as well.17 Many classroom management plans begin with the teacher’s philosophy of motivation. Basically, it lays out what you believe about education and how students should learn. You can talk about the environment you want to create and how you plan to create that environment, both physically and emotionally.Set the tone on the first day of class. Start building relationships with your students by being friendly and getting to know each other. 18 So they know in advance how you expect them to behave.19 Get your students’ parents on board by laying out your basic rules. You can also tell them about the systems of rewards and consequences. That way, parents know what to expect throughout the year.Set the example.20 For instance, show you are respectful of each student’s ideas. It will let them know they can trust you.Be consistent. Probably the most important part of any classroom management plan is being consistent with how you carry it out. That means enforcing(执行) rules even when you don’t want to, as kids will come to understand that you mean what you say in the classroom.A.Determine your philosophy.B.Understand each child’s motivation.C.Create a formal letter for consequences.D.Write a letter about the plan to send home.E.Share the rules, rewards, and consequences.F.It is important that you follow the classroom rules, too.G.It can help you get and maintain control of the classroom.50分阅读限时满分练(三)【语篇导读】本文是一篇应用文。

AI was off to go back to work one evening when I saw my two children were busy sewing things on the sewing machine. My 11-year-old daughter was, in the midst of her project, going to assist her elder brother in making a little cushion. I left, and after a few hours returned to find a mess in the kitchen and in the front room, and both children sitting in front of the television.Having had a long day, I was too tired to greet them and then I noticed the material my daughter had used. It had been purchased to make a color-coordinated(颜色协调的)baby blanket, and now had chunks(块)cut out of almost every piece of fabric(织物). Not stopping to listen, I exploded at the children and explained how angry I was at what had been done.My daughter listened to me sheepishly, not trying to defend herself at all, but the pain could be seen written across her face. She retreated to her room, and spent some time there alone before she came out to say good night and once again apologize for the mistake she had made.A few hours later, as I was preparing to go to bed, I found that there on my bed lay a beautiful, little cushion made out of the forbidden fabric, with the words “I LOVE MOM”. Alongside it was a note apologizing again, and the innocence in which she had taken the fabric. To this day, I still get tears in my eyes when I think of how I reacted and still feel the pain of my actions. It was I who then went to her and apologized for my actions. Lewandowski, has found that people who exhibit negative characteristics, such as unfairness and rudeness, appear to be less physically attractive to observers. In the study, the participants viewed photographs of opposite-sex individuals and rated(评分)them for attractiveness before and after being provided with information about their personalities. After personality information was received, participants also rated the probability of each individual’s becoming a friend and a dating partner. Information o n personality was found to significantly change the probability, showing that cognitive(认知的)processes modify(修改)judgments of attractiveness.“Thinking a person as having a desirable personality makes the person more suitable in general as a close relationship partner of any kind,” said Lewandowski. The findings show that a positive personality leads to greater expectation of becoming friends, which leads to greater expectation of becoming romantic partners and, finally, to being viewed as more physically attractive. The findings remained consistent regardless of how “attractive” the indiv idual was formerly thought to be or of the participants’ current relationship status.“This research provides a positive outcome by reminding people that personality goes a long way toward determining your attractiveness; it can even change people’s impr essions of how good looking you are,” said Lewandowski.5. She and seven other non-Chinese winners werechosen from a pool of 262 applicants(申请者)from 47 countries in a contest organized by Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group and the official English-language newspaper, China Daily. When Bowen runs with the Olympic torch, she will not only be representing the United States, but also be representing thousands of Chinese orphans(孤儿).Bowen, a mother of two adopted Chinese daughters, is the executive director of Half the Sky Foundation, an organization which was founded in 1998 and aims to enrich the lives and improve the prospects for orphaned children in China. In nearly 10 years, Bowen and Half the Sky have touched the lives of over 13,000 children. Half the Sky is now present in 36 welfare(福利)institutions in 28 Chinese cities. About 4,000 children are active in the program, which provides trained staff, educational tools, medical support and nurturing love for orphans.Bowen hopes that running with the Olympic torch would help draw attention to the children in China. 2023届高考英语二轮复习外刊阅读理解训练狗也是伴侣

23年高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——狗也是伴侣——改编自A dog is more than a fleeting love Dogs have long been known as man's best friend. As pets, dogs bring us comfort and joy, and they also keep us active. During the pandemic lockdowns last year, dog ownership increased significantly as more people were staying at home and had the time to care for a furry friend. However, with increased demand for puppies came skyrocketing prices. Some breeds like Cockapoos and Cocker Spaniels saw even steeper price increases, and many puppies were sold for over £3,000. Such high prices might encourage puppy farming, smuggling, or even dog theft. Some breeders have also been found selling animals on social media sites, which animal welfare charities have called "extremely irresponsible."Notably, new owners who obtained a dog legally, from a registered breeder or a rescue centre, found themselves unprepared for life with a new pet. Animal behaviourists in theUK have reported that requests for help have surged from owners of dogs suffering from fear-aggression after their lives have been turned upside down.Looking towards the future, there are concerns about the welfare of these beloved pets. Ian Atkin, the manager of the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary in the UK, warns that while dogs are enjoying their moment now, separation anxiety could surface when people return to work. Additionally, Claire Calder from the UK’s Dogs Trust rescue organisation says that “economic situations also mean that some people may find they cannot afford to look after a dog.”The takeaway message is to avoid purchasing a puppy too hastily and to pick one that fits into your lifestyle. In conclusion, owning a dog can provide immense happiness and fulfilment, but it comes with significant responsibilities. Whether you acquire one from a breeder or a shelter, be prepared to commit time, energy, and finances towards its well-being. And most importantly, ensure you consider the impact a new dog will have on your lifestyle and living situation before bringing it home, so you can enjoy yourfurry friend for years to come.【重点词汇】1. man's best friend /mænz/ /best/ /frend/ 人类最好的朋友2. comfort /ˈkʌmfət/ 安慰; 舒适3. joy /dʒɔɪ/ 高兴; 快乐4. pandemic /pænˈdemɪk/ 流行病; 大流行5. lockdown /ˈlɒkdaʊn/ 原意为紧急情况下对某些地方或建筑实施封锁措施,以防止危险的散播。

AOne Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we’d have for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day. Sunday couldn’t have been more different — clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still -25°C.Six of us drove to the coast. It was t he first time we’d been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling — more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We’d been told that then they were nursing their chicks (刚孵出的幼雏) and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose (摆姿势) for photos. Before heading back, we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically (明显地) since our last visit. We see ourselves on a long trip that goes across the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we think in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing , of cattle feeding on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, or row upon row of corn and wheat, of flat lands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, condemning(谴责)the minutes for loitering(虚度)— waiting, waiting, waiting for the station."When we reach the station, that will be it!”we cry. "When I’m 38." "When I buy a new 450SL Mercdes Benz!""When I put the last kid through college.""When I have paid off the debt!" "When I get a promotion.""When I reach the age of rement, I shall live happily ever after!"Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all.The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us."Relish(appreciate) the moment" is a good motto, actually it isn’t the burdens of today that drive man mad. It is the regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more icecream, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. Then the station will come soon enough.8. Why does the author describe the mental picture?A. To lead us into a perfect world.B. To let people enjoy the scenery.C. To introduce an actual trip of his.D. To compare it to our lif e’s journey.9. To stop us wandering along the aisles.DDoctors’ moonlighting is becoming popular in hospitals around China. It h as not only raised a lot of heated discussions in the media, but also caught the attention of the central government in Beijing. On December 26, a spokesman of the Ministry of Health stressed that the ministry was firmly against doctors’ moonlighting, wh ile strict regulations should be applied to doctors takingpart-time jobs, the Xinhua News Agency reported.Last year, the Ministry sent out a notice to a variety of health organizations to speed up the reform of their personnel (人事)system. According to the notice, medical organizations can hire medical experts as part-time doctors but such activities should take place under the hospital’s management and regulations(规定).As for moonlighting--meaning that the doctor provides medical service without the permission of the original hospital--such activity goes against China’s Practicing Doctor Law, Xinhua reported. In China, doctors used to be controlled by hospitals and they could work for only one hospital. However, as China’s medical personnel system reform developed, it has been recognized that medical human resources, just like human resources in other areas, should be shared by the whole society. But on the other hand, doctors’ taking part-time jobs should follow the relative regulations applied in the medical field.First of all, they should follow relative government laws and regulations. They should also follow the rules and regulations set by the medical organizations they work for. In addition, they should pay taxes for their income from the part-time jobs. What matters most is that they should first finish their regular jobs as required and be responsible for patients to ensure qualified and safe medical treatment.12. ASinging are the pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti. One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin. Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school principals in the country. ks**5uOver 70 % of Haitian population live below the poverty line with inadequate food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.“We are so cut off we have many difficulties,” comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books and other materials is practically impossible. Emile tries to encourage those around her to make use of all available resources. Her efforts are bearing fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to their children’s schooling and increase their own income by selling embroidery(刺绣) and other handicrafts. ks**5uRecent political instability has meant that the country has not invested in education for ten years. Enrolment(入学) is a mere 44 per cent and a little less than a half of those entering primary school finish it. Less than a third of these go on to secondary school. In rural areas it is not rare to find 17- and 18 year-olds in primary school. Beau-Roc has only 4 teachers for 260 pupils. Emile works constantly to improve her pupils’ environment. Under her direction, a local worker is now constructing a storehouse for the food delivered regularly by the World Food Programme. Not only is Emile’s salary too little, but she receives it irregularly. For her, transport is a real headache. She lives five kilometers away and has to take a privately-owned bus, costing more than she can afford.“The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly”, Emile comments. “With all the sacrifices and risks it requires, only those who are really cut out for teaching should do it.” Nevertheless, Emile loves her job. “I alw ays feel at home with the children and, the parents understand what I’m doing.”1. What theme is presented in this passage?A. Devotion to education.B. Poverty and hardship.C. Politics and childrenD. Love and beauty ks**5u2. Which of the following is extremely difficult for Beau-Roc primary school?A. Teaching the women how to make embroidery and other handicrafts.B. Persuading local women to care about their children’s education.C. Encouraging those around her to use those available resources.D. Finding chalk, school books and other materials.3. In the last paragraph, “those who are really cut out for teaching” are those who are ________.A. dismissed from teachingB. unfamiliar with teachingC. qualified for teachingD. cautious about teachingBLabor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce w ould be lower than if there were a balanced spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds (超出) the number of deaths then as a total population increases proportion of the workforce declines.Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are insufficient numbers of young people entering it to replace those who are leaving it. In that situation the population istop-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate. ks**5uThe age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue (税收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.4.In the passage “labor force” is defined as ___________.A.people who are available to work and earn incomeB.self-employed people onlyC.people who are looking for an employment ks**5uD.employers who create job opportunities5.The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.A.a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforceB.a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforceC.the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforceD.the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution,6.When a population is said to be aging,___________.A.there are more people retiring than those entering the workforceB.the birth rate must be growingC.there should be an oversupply of workforceD.There are more people entering the workforce than those retiringC(1) Mr. Brown (the motorist)At about 9:20 p.m. on October 14th, I was driving along Market Road in the direction ofMidwick. We would expect to find that Mr. Brown’s car was damaged on its ______ side.A. frontB. leftC. rightD. driver’sDAs any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. ks**5uLewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ate M M MDordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts t o control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there i s.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible.” Says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”11. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______ .A. show the relationship between parents and childrenB. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC. report on the findings of a studyD. give information about family problems12. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragrap h 3, Lewis means that middle children______ .A. have to help their parents to serve dinnerB. get the least attention from the familyC. are often kept away from the dinner tableD. find it hard to keep up with other children13. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______ .A. they are busy serving food to their childrenB. they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC. they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family14. Lewis research provides an answer to the question ______ .A. Why TV is important in family ks**5uB. why parents should keep good orderC. why children in small families seem to be quietD. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life15. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A. It is important to have the right food for children.B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C. While we waited for the staff to lift her back into bed, Mom fell asleep. Not wanting to wake her, we moved to the far end of the room and spoke softly. After several minutes our conversation was interrupted by a sound coming from across the room. We stopped talking and looked at Mom. Her eyes were closed, but she was clearly trying to communicate with us. We went to her side.“Whirr,” she sa id weakly.“Where?” I asked. “Mom, is there something you want?” “Whirr,” she repeated a bit stronger. My brothers and I looked at each other and shook our heads sadly.Mom opene d her eyes, sighed, and with all the energy she could maser said, “Not was, say were!”It suddenly occurred to us that Mom was correcting brother Jim’s last sentence. “If it was up to me…”Jim leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Mom,” he whispered. But wouldn’t it be kinder to the environment if you asked for paper bags instead? The answer is not the easy as it might seem. Environmentalists say there are drawbacks to using both plastic bags and paper bags.According to the American Plastics Council 80 percent of groceries in the US are packed in plastic bags.“The numbers are becoming huge,” said Vincent Cobb, a businessman from Chicago who set up “reusable bags. com” on the Internet. He notes that consumers use between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags per year worldwide. Some experts believe that all these bags harm the environment. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and, as it does so, poisonous materials are released into the water and soil.Further damage is caused if plastic bags enter the sea. For example, endangered sea turtles cannot tell the bags from jellyfish(水母), their main source of food, and often choke on(噎死)them.Floating plastic bags have been spotted as far north as the Arctic Ocean and as far south as the southern end of South America. One expert predicts that, within ten years, plastic bags will wash up in Antarctica! However, this kind of bag does have its advantages.“Plastic grocery bags are some of the most reused things around the house,” explained Laurie Kusek of the American Plastics Council.According to the Film and Bag Federation, a trade group in the US plastics industry, paper bags use more energy and create more waste than plastic bags. Plastic bags require 40 per cent lessenergy to produce and cause 70 per cent less air pollution, the group explained. They also release as much as 94 percent less waste into the water than paper ones. But paper bags do break down more quickly than plastic bags. They don’t endanger wildlife, either. So what should we do? One possible solution would be to use biodegradable(可降解的)plastic bags. But until biodegradable technology improves, it might be easier to pack things you buy in reusable cloth bags.9. The best title of the passage is _____.A. Paper Causes Less PollutionB. Plastic Causes Less PollutionC. Paper and Plastics Cause PollutionD. Paper Bags Break Down More Quickly10. The underlined word “drawbacks” might mean “_____”.A. Which of the following shows that paper bags are better than plastic ones?A. Paper bags take less time to rot.B. Paper bags cause less air pollution.C. Paper bags are more reusable.D. Paper bags cause less water pollution.DHigh-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t tas te as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast the bread. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make for better-tasting meals. Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.Other high-tech timesavers have similar disadvantages. For examples, most people use the phone or e-mail to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you word-process(文字处理)a homework assignment instead of handwriting it, you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual wor ds they are writing.13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. The writer likes high-tech cooking.B. Low-tech cooking produces better-tasting meals.C. High-tech news programs always keep you reading what is important to you.D. Handwritten homework is better than word-processed homework.14. How does the writer feel about high-tech tool?A. Better late than never.B. Easy come, easy go.C. Every coin has two sides.D. Learn to walk before you run.15. What is the main subject discussed in the text?A. High-tech vs. low-tech.B. Advantages vs. disadvantages.C. Newspapers and magazines vs. television and the Internet.D. Word-processing vs. handwriting.16. How is the text organized?A. Explanation—Argument—Description.B. Opinion—Discussion—Description.C. Topic—Comparison—Supporting examples.D. Introduction—Supporting examples—Discussion.EThe Great Wall of China can ,indeed, be seen from outer space with the naked(赤裸的) eye.So education officials, who felt worried about changing textbooks—which have long held that the Great Wall and the dykes(堤堰)in the Netherlands were the only man-made structures visible from space—can breathe easy.Yang Liwei, the nation’s first spaceman, disappointed a lot of Chinese when he said he did not see the wall during his orbit of less than 24 hours in October 2003, giving rise to calls for revisions(修改) in textbooks. But there is a rider: There are many, many structures which can also be seen, such as the Pyramids of Egypt, airports, highways and even Beijing’s Third Ring Road.Undoubtedly, it requires an atmospheric “ perfect storm” in outer space, defined as an altitude of about 350 km and you have to be in the right place at the right time, under the right conditions to spot a particular structure. Chinese-American spaceman Leroy Chiao, who has been on three space flights and is currently coming to the end of his six-month stint(期限) on the joint US-Russian space station, has provided the first photographic evidence of sections of the Great Wall using commercially available equipment.According to Chiao, the chances of shooting the Great Wall area are “maybe once every few days and only during dayligh t every three months. ” Since late March, Chiao has had just one opportunity to fly over the Great Wall, but the weather was dangerous. He has one last chance before he is scheduled to land in Kazakhstan on April 25—and he will be keeping a sharp lookout.17. Now the education officials “can breathe easy” because they know_____.A. they don’t need to change the textbooksB. they’ve been seriously mistakenC. what Yang Liwei said was not trueD. they can revise the textbooks as wished18. What does the underlined word “rider” in the 4th paragraph possibly mean?A. An imagined conclusion.B. An added statement.C. A person in a spaceshipD. A strange thing.19. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Yang Liwei orbited around the earth in less than 24 hours.B. Leroy Chiao shot the Great Wall with commercially available equipment.C. To spot a particular structure in outer space, you need right conditions.D. Leroy Chiao land in the United States on April 25.20. One can get a chance to see the Great Wall from the space station_____.A. every few daysB. only once every three monthsC. only when it’s in daylightD. only when the weather is dangerous 1—20 CDCAC ACDCB CABCA CABDC。

In Mexico, my dad became friends with a toucan that was in a “walk in andsee the birds” cage. The toucan was so smart that it knew how to get out. It just needed some human to help it. It almost flew out while we were leaving!I also noticed that all toucans have different beaks! They also have very long unique beaks with an extremely long tongue. It struts(大摇大摆地走) around with its chest sticking out and beak pointed forward. The toucan is a beautiful bird! The beak has a red tip (different shades on every one), but sometimes there is a little turquoise on the bottom half. Then, right where the beak separates there is a splotch of yellow. And the rest of the beak is green. The toucan takes very much pride of itself. The toucan eats fruit and seeds. The ramphastidae(the toucan family) is known for its long beak, and 37 species. Toucans also feed on insects, small lizards, bird nestlings and eggs. They nest in hollow trees where they incubate and care for their young. They are found in the woody areas.Of the various toucan facts, here is an odd one. Citizens of Central and South America associate the toucans with evil spirits. They think the birds can be the personification of evils. Where couvades(父代母育) is practiced, the father of a new child must not eat toucan flesh as it is believed to bewitch the new-born child. Yet the toucan can also be a tribal totem(图腾). So the medicine men use it as a symbol to fly to the spirit world.5.Which of the following words is NOT suitable to describe toucans?A. IntelligentB. ConfidentC. DangerousD. Here are what I believe the best steps towards a better relationship with her. They are not necessarily surprising or revolutionary, but they have worked for many people. Try them.Remember your moth er’s age. As children, we often do not think of our mother as having an age. Even when we become conscious of her as an individual, age does not change our view; she is still our mother. Knowing our mother’s age, not just in numbers of years but in terms of her psychological and physical state, often helps us to understand her better.Listen to your mother. I have found that sometimes the things my mother told me long ago are remarkably useful. If your mother knows that you respect her point of view, even if you do not share it, it will help her feel close to you.Remember that your mother has a past. A key step in managing our relationship with our mother is to find out about her early life.In learning about our mother’s past, we know that it can encourage us to think about her whole life.Ask your mother about your childhood history. My grandparents died when I was young. If you are fortunate enough to have living family, think of your life as a jigsaw puzzle and ask as many questions as you can to put the picture together. Understanding your roots and your childhood can help you know more clearly who you are, as part of a family which you share with your mother.Remember that managing your mother is really about managing yourself. Taking any measure to managing our mother is the issue of how we manage ourselves. No matter how difficult we find her, it is important to remember that it is not her behavior itself that is causing us discomfort, but the way we feel about her behavior. We should follow the way of her life. At the heart of managing your mother is being able to accept your flawed self. Only then are you able to accept your mother-----with all her failings.9.What does the underlined phrase “a jigsaw puzzle” mean?A.拼图玩具B.浏览迷宫C.填充字谜D.游戏人生10.Which of the following is implied but not stated in the passage?A.You will have a better relationship with your mother if you respect her opinion.B.Knowing your mother’s age is a useful piece of advice.C.The key measure of managing our mother is how we manage ourselves.D.It is unreasonable to expect our mother to change totally from the way shewas brought up.11.The main purpose of writing the text is _______.A.to give information about how you think of your motherB.to improve the relationship with your motherC.to keep a sense of humor about your mother all day longD.to accept your mother-----with all her failingsDBernice Gallego sat down one day this summer, as she does pretty much every day,and began listing items on eBay. She dug into a box and pulled out a baseball card. She stopped for a moment and admired the picture. “Red Stocking B. B. Club of Cincinnatti,” the card read, under the reddish brown color photo of ten men with their socks pulled up to their knees. As a collector and sell er, it’s her job to spot old items that might have value today. It’s what Bernice,72, and her husband, Al Gallego, 80, have been doing since 1974 at their California antique store. This card, she figured, was worth selling on eBay. She took a picture, wrote a description and put it up for auction. She put a $10 price tag on it, deciding against $15 because it would have cost her an extra 20 cents. Later that night she got a few odd inquiries---someone wanting to know whether the card was real, someone wanting her to end the caution and sell him the card immediately. The card is actually 139 years old. Sports card collectors call the find “extremely rare” and estimate the card could fetch five, or perhaps, six figuresat caution.Just like that, Bernice is the least likely character ever for a rare-baseball card story. “I didn’t even know baseball existed that far back,” Gallego says, “I don’t think that I’ve ever been to a baseball game.” The theory is that the card came out of a storage space they bought a few years back. It is not uncommon in their line of work to buy the entire contents of storage units for around $200.When she met with card trader Rick Mirigian, she found out what the cardwas-----an 1869 advertisement with a picture of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnatti Red Stocking.“When I came to meet her and she took it out of a sandwich bag and she was smoking a cigarette, I almost fainted,” Mirigian says. “ They’ve uncovered a piece of history that few people will ever be able to imagine. That card is history. It’s like unearthing a Mona Lisa or a Picasso.”12.What can we conclude from paragraph 3?A.Bernice had to pay some fees for her card on eBay.B.Bernice wanted to end the caution that night.C.Bernice decided to sell the card for $15.D.eBay charged her 20 cents for the card.13.The underlined word “fetch” in paragraph 4 most probably means “_______”.A. go and bringB. add up toC. go down toD. be sold for14.From the passage we may learn that _______.A. Bernice is a baseball fanB. Bernice is the last person to purchase the rare-baseball cardC. Bernice unexpectedly became the owner of the rare-baseball cardD. Bernice didn’t realize the value of the card until she put it up for auction15.What would be the best title for the passage?A.A Surprisingly Valuable DiscoveryB.The History of the Baseball CardC.Bernice Gallego---A lucky collectorD. They were surrounded by streams and lakes full of hungry fish. They got excited about fishing!Someone said that they needed a philosophy of fishing, so they carefully defined and redefined fishing and the purpose of fishing. They developed fishing skills. Then they realized that they had been going at it backwards. They had approached fishing from the point of view of the fisherman, and not from the point of view of the fish. How did fish view the world? What did fish eat and when? These were all good things to know. So they began research on fishing and attended conferences on fishing. Some traveled to faraway places to study different kinds of fish with different habits. But no one had yet gone fishing. With meetings, conferences, and seminars (研讨会), they just simply didn’t have time to fish.Jake was a newcomer to The Fisherman’s Fellowship. After the meeting of the Fellowship, Jake went fishing. He tried a few things, got the hang of it, and caught a big fish. At the next meeting, he told his story, and he was honored for his catch, and then scheduled to speak at all the meetings and tell how he did it. Because of all the speaking invitations and his election to the board of directors of The Fisherman’s Fellowship, Jake no longer had time to go fishing. But soon he began to feel restless and empty. He longed to fish once again. So he cut the speaking, he resigned from the board, and he said to a friend, “Let’s go fishing.” They did. But when it comes to causing pain, the power of words may still be vastly underestimated (低估).Kids who are always laughed at and called names can develop low self-respect and may grow up to be angry adults.“Hurtful words can hau nt (萦绕) you all your life and may lead to heart disease, depression, stress,” said W. Penn Handwerker, a medicalanthropologist. Not surprisingly, those that have the most effect are words that come from people we admire or who have some power over our lives : teachers, wives/ husbands, parents and friends.Studies have found verbal assaults (攻击) are even more painful than physical ones. “A bruise can eventually disappear, but words can hurt your soul. Words create fear and contain the promise of future violence. The emotional effect on victims can range from low-level anxiety to great fear,” said Stephen Wessler, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Hate Violence at the University of Southern Maine. It is estimated that 160,000 students miss school every day because they’re afraid of being harassed (骚扰).What’s more, name –calling and other forms of rude remarks are early signs of actual violence in schools. Wessler, who worked as a prosecutor (检察官),explained that when he was called into schools for cases of violence, it was typically the last stage of a much longer battle. “The violence had actually begun days or months after verbal harassment,” he said.8. To point out what a prosecutor can do to stop verbal assaults inschools.DYoung women are more adventurous than young men when travelling abroad in gap years. One in three female backpackers visits more than three countries during a year out and travels alone, according to new research.By contrast, the majority of their male counterparts visit only one country and tend to travel in groups, says a survey by the Gap Year company, which provides information and services for students considering taking a year out.More women than men say that their prime reason for taking time off is to see the world and experience different cultures.Men are more likely to rank “having fun” higher on their list of priorities.Women are more likely to value the challenge of a foreign trip, and many cited reasons such as learning a language and meeting new people. The more adventurous gap years taken by women seem to work to their benefit; more than three quarters of those surveyed have reported increased confidence, self reliance and independence, whereas only halfof the men had that experience. The research also shows that women are more likely to do voluntary work while travelling, with more than one in ten helping with teaching or development projects. One of the reasons given for this is a wish to see the country in an authentic light.A greater proportion of women than men face objections or criticism from their families over their gap year plans.Among the men surveyed, lack of money is the main barrier to travel.Carolyn Martin, a doctor from London, is a typically confident female traveller.Starting in Cape Town, she travelled around southern Africa and Australia with a string of unusual and sometimes dangerous jobs.“I had one job chasing elephants off the runway in Africa by banging a stick against a pan,” she recalled.“It was OK but one day I did get chased by one.”She said that she had travelled alone because “you meet more people”.12.According to the article, ________.A.most of the women students will travel abroad during the summer holidaysB.one third of the women students will travel abroad in a year C.women students are more likely to travel abroad alone in gap years D.women students are willing to travel abroad in a group13.In the third paragraph, the underlined word “priorities” most probably means ________.A.selections B.attractions C.preferences D.projects 14.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Men students will travel less during the gap year because of their part time jobs.B.Women students will travel more but face more objections.C.The article suggests that women travelling alone will have dangerousexperiences.D.Men students prefer to travel inside their own country to going abroad.15.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A.Girls Get the Best out of Gap YearsB.Boys Lack Courage in Gap YearsC.For Fun or for Adventure?D.Young Women Are More Adventurous1—15 BBC ACBB BCAB CCBA。

The answer depends on whom you ask, according to new research led by Katherine Hilton from Stanford University.Using a set of controlled audio clips (录音片段), Hilton surveyed 5,000 American Englishspeakers to better understand what affects people's perceptions of interruptions. She had participants listen to audio clips and then answer questions about whether the speakers seemed to be friendly and engaged, listening to one another, or trying to interrupt.Hilton found that American English speakers have different conversational styles. She identified two distinct groups: high and low intensity speakers. High intensity speakers are generally unfortable with moments of silence in conversation and consider talking at the same time a sign of engagement. Low intensity speakers find it rude to talk at the same time and prefer people to speak one after another in conversation. The differences in conversational styles became evident when participants listened to audio clips in which two people spoke at the same time but were agreeing with each other and stayed on topic, Hilton said. The high intensity group reported that conversations where people spoke at the same time when expressing agreement were not interruptive but engaged and friendlier than the conversations with moments of silence in between speaking turns. In contrast, the low intensity group perceived any amount of simultaneous (同时的) chat as a rude interruption, regardless of what the speakers were saying.“People care about being interrupted, and those small interruptions can have a massive effect on the overall munication,” Hilton said. “Breaking apart what an interruption means is essential if we want to understand how humans interact with each other.”4.What does Hilton's research focus on?A.What interruptions mean to people.B.Whether interruptions are good or not.C.How to avoid getting interrupted.D.Why speakers interrupt each other.5.What do participants of the study need to do?A.Record an audio clip.B.Answer some questions.C.Listen to one another.D.Have a chat with a friend.6.What do low intensity speakers think of simultaneous chat?A.It's important. AThis past week, the world lost an icon and I lost one of my favorite musicians when Michael Jackson, 50, died of a heart attack on June 25. Jackson, a famous person nearly all his life, was admired by fans for signature dance moves like the Moonwalk and his album Thriller, which has sold over 100 million copies. One of the greatest hits from Thriller is Beat It. In the song, Jackson sings: “Just beat it, beat it/ No one wants to be defeated/ It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right/ Just beat it, beat it!”Just what does he mean?“Beat it” is a very common expression with a few different meanings. One of the most popular is the command form, which is similar to “Get out of here!” or “Get out of my face, stop bothering me!” You might tell your dog to “beat it” when he keeps begging you for food.“Beat it” can also be used as a suggestion, to describe the act of leaving suddenly: “This party is so boring, let’s beat it.”The expres sion can be taken more literally, in its traditional sense of “ to strike or hit something”: “Tell me the answer before I beat it out of you.”“To beat” also means “to win”. “She struggled with her illness, and in the end she beat it.” When Jackson sings, “No one wants to be defeated…Just beat it!” he may be encouraging his audience to overcome their struggles. Or maybe he means the opposite: that it’s better to run than stay and fight. I'd like to put it in my coffee.”Everybody stared at him——so strange! His face turned red, but, still,he put the salt in his coffee and drank it.She asked him curiously,“Why do you have this hobby?”He replied,“When I was a little boy,I was living near the sea.I liked playing in the sea, and I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee.I always think of my childhood.I miss my hometown so much.I miss my parents who are still living there.”While saying that tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched. That's his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart.A man who can tell out his homesickness, he must be a man who loves home, cares about home, and has responsibility of home. Then she also started to speak, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story. They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who meets all her demands;he was kind-hearted, warm and careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him! Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story was just like every beautiful love story, the princess married the prince, then they were living a happy life…And, every time she made coffee for him,she put some salt in the coffee. After 40 years, he passed away, leaving her a letter which said,“My dearest, please forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you—the salty coffee.“Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous at that time.Actually I wanted some sugar, but I said salt.It was hard for me to change so I just went ahead.“I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I have promised not to lie to you for anything.“Now I'm dying, I'm afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth:I don't like the salty coffee. What a strange bad taste! But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life!“Since I knew you, I never feel sorry for anything I do for you.Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life.If I can live for a second time,I still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even though I have to drink the salty coffee again.”Her tears made the letter totally wet.Someday, someone asked her,“What's the taste of salty coffee?”“It's sweet,”she replied.5.After ordering some salt to put into the coffee, the young man must have felt .A.touched B.satisfied C.disappointed D.embarrassed6.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Salt coffee is more delicious and sweeter than sugar coffee.B.The man ordered the salt coffee in order to create a chance to date with the girl.C.The man had to have salty coffee all his life to keep his word.D.The woman hardly believed the man's explanation at their first date.7.From the passage we can see that the man is .A.caring and kind-hearted B.shy and slyC.dishonest but responsible D.warm and understanding8.It is implied in the passage that the woman _____ when reading the letter left by her husband.A.was cheated by his husband's behavior B.was touched by his husband's white lie C.felt sorry to know the truth too late D.felt angry about his dishonestyCChina Daily Oct.11.2008-TheMinistry Of Health has called for more awareness from the public on the mental health of the young.as part of efforts to mark World Mental Health Day which fell on Friday.More than 15 percent of Chinese youths have been found with mental problems.and about 30 million young people under 17 are suffering from depression, the Shanghai-based Wenhui Daily reported. The World Health Organization estimates that before 2020,the rate of children with mental problems will increase to 50 percent ,and mental problem will become a major factor behind deaths and illness in the young worldwide.Dang Xianhong, the spokesperson for the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, said rapid social change is one of the reasons behind the rising number of youngsters with psychological problems. If these mental dispenses are not addressed on time, science of crimes,drug-taking and other dangerous behaviors are expected to rise.Experts said mental diseases could be caused by many factors, such as the inability to handle interpersonal relations well, unstable emotions and pressures from an overload of studies.A number of expects have also said the one child policy is another reason leading to poor mental health in the young.Children are said to be too “spoiled”and“selfish”in a one child family. It’s reported that schools in many cities are rolling out measures to help students maintain their mental well-being.Yin Jingmiao, a teacher of the Beijing No,105 Middle School, told China Daily that the school invites psychologists to provide counseling to students three times a month.“Students can be arranged to have 40-minute counseling sessions.”Yin said.“The school also gives lectures on mental health to senior grade students before they take the national college entrance exams to help ease any anxiety arising from the tests.”9.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.Efforts to Mark World Mental Health DayB.Public Awareness on Youngsters’Mental Diseases ExpectedC.How to Maintain Mental Well-beingD.Seriousness of Youngsters Mental Health Problems10.The writer intends to tell us in the second paragraph that _____.A.metal problems will become as serious as deaths and illnessB.only young people are suffering from metal health problemsC.mental health problems of the young are becoming a popular problemD.the rate of children with mental problems will increase to 50 percent 11.Which could be the consequence if the problem is left untreated?A.Inability to handle interpersonal relations.B.Unstable emotions.C.Drug.taking and other dangerous behaviors.D.Rapid social changes12.Why is Beijing No.105 Middle School mentioned in the passage?A.To provide the students with counseling sessions.B.To give an example showing how mental problems are dealt with.C.To help ease the anxiety arising from college entrance exams.D.To call on other schools to learn from No.105 Middle Schoo1.DNet Library is a library that lends out digital books. It treats a digital book like a paperback copy. It charges libraries per book per copy and gives publishers a cut of the total income. From the consumer’s point of view, this means that if more than five people want the latest Danielle Steel romance novel, other people who request that book will get a message saying the title is unable to get. Many publishers seem to have embraced its model. More than 350 publishers gave the company rights to hand out their digital works, and McGraw-Hill Corporation and Houghton Mifflin Corporation have put money into the company. The California public libraries and about1,800 others across the US are trying out the Net Library service. Some librarians criticize the Net Library model. Stanford University librarian Michael Keller argues that the company is creating an unnatural fear of digital works, which is contrary to the ideas of the Internet.Keller and some other librarians argue for the e-book vision set forth by Brary. Brary is starting a service that lets us users read books for free. But it will charge about 25 cents a page when a person tries to point out material or copy and taste it into a different file or tries to download a copy onto a computer.Christopher Warnock, chief executi ve of Brary, believes most consumers won’t want to buy entire books, only the parts that interest them.“There is not really a lot of good owning an electronic file and having to store it and manage it. A.humankind is very important to earlier species, such as the primate groupB.human beings are limited by the environment while animals are notC.human beings become more and more different from each otherD.humankind has experienced a generalization rather than specialization in ability 18.According to the passage, primate includes such animals asA.monkeys and anteaters B.tigers and apesC.apes and monkeys D.monkeys and giraffes19.According to the passage, evolution has made it possible for humans to A.increase the population B.resist natural offersC.go to the moon D.cure all diseases20.According to the author, imbalance between biological potential and environmental resistance has resulted inA.the population explosion B.the destruction of human habitations C.the growth of natural ecosystem D.the specialization of humans1—20 BCCA DCAB BCCB BDDB DCCA。

手惰市安逸阳光实验学校高考英语二轮专题总复习阅读理解强化练习(十六)(9)Scientists are developing a new kind of machine to take the place of humans. These machines can do jobs in places that are too dangerous for humans. For example, they are being developed to work in nuclear power center, deep under the oceans and in outer space.John Marrit, a psychologist(心理学家) in Williamsburg Massachusetts, helped develop the new machine. This is how they work. A machine is placed in an area far away from the person who operates it. The person wears special hard hat with television screens and sound equipment. The screens and sound equipment let the person see and hear exactly what the machine is seeing and hearing. Mr. Marrit says this gives the person the feeling of being in the same place as the machine. The idea, he says, is being there without going there. The person uses an electronic control to make the machine move. The machine copies the person’s movements exactly. If the person raises his right arm, the machine raises the right arm, too. This means an expert can do a dangerous job while staying in the safe place. For example, a person can direct the machine to destroy a bomb without going near the bomb himself.1. The new kind of machine being introduced in the passage is _______.A. in existenceB. only an ideaC. being tried outD. being researched and developed2. The machine _______.A. follows the person’s orderB. is controlled by a computerC. does exactly what the person doesD. is controlled by a televis ion on the person’s head3. 【2014唐山一中调研考试(二)】AI was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car.I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work.Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those “don't want to be bothered times”.“ I hope he doesn't ask me for any money,” I thought. He didn't.He came and sat on the edge of the pavement in front of the bus stop but he didn'tlook like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke.“That's a very pretty car,” he said.He was in rags but he had an air of dignity around him.His badly-grown blond beard kept more than his face warm.I said, “thanks,” and continued wiping off my car.He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected plea(乞求) for money never came.As the silence between us widened, something inside said, “ask him if he needs any help.” I was sure that he would say “yes” but I held true to the inner voice.“Do you need any help?” I asked. He answered in three simple words that I shall never forget. We often look for wisdom in great men and women. We expect it from those of higher learning and achievements.I expected nothing but an outstretched dirty hand.He spoke the three words that shook me.“Don't we all?” he said.56. Why did the writer parked his car before the mall?A. Because he wanted to pick up his wife.B. Because he wanted to show off his car.C. Because he wanted to wipe off his car.D. There were Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary quality as her sisters’. Their father was Patrick Bronte, born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy.Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self-educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes. As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor, Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher, but there was no interest shown in Charlotte’s book. (It was not published until 1859.) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847.Jane Eyre was immediately successful; the other two, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal-like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of her book, and Anne died in 1849.Charlotte published Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1853. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis(肺结核) as her sisters had.11. What did the Bronte sisters want to do for Branwell Bronte?A. Help him write stories.B. Help him get trained in art.C. They may feel as if they have exhausted all of their options, and sometimes they are on the verge of giving up. But there is hope. Schools for troubled teens offer discipline and in some cases, drug treatment programs that can provide important life skills, and more importantly, a fresh start. The following is a list of the most effective types of schools for troubled teens. Not every facility is a match for every child, but by knowing the differences between them, parents can make a better educated decision about where to send their teenager.Boarding SchoolsWhen a child is unable to deal with the relative freedom of a standard school day, boarding schools might be a good choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a dorm setting, where almost every minute of the day is scheduled by school administrators.Treatment CentersWhen a teenager has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, a residential center that specializes in young people is an outstanding way to help them break the cycle of addiction. Treatment centers feature individual and group counseling to help identify the root causes of the drug problem and help develop the life skills needed to stay clean when the program is over. Wilderness ProgramsDesigned to help improve the discipline and self-reliance of the child, wilderness programs send kids back to nature. By placing them in a foreign and sometimes uncomfortable setting, wilderness programs hope to improve children’s behavior. Programs generally include hikes, exercise programs and team building exercises.Boot CampsBoot camps are the most extreme style of school for troubled teens. These facilities are modeled after actual military boot camps, where the individual must get into shape, work as part of a team, and follow a long, hard set of rules and regulations. However, boot camps might not be the best choice for a teen with a drug addiction.59. Who would be the intended readers of the passage?A. Teachers.B. Parents.C. Students.D. Experts.60. As the author suggests, schools for troubled teens______.A. can be a good choice for some desperate parentsB. can completely help and change troubled teensC. are becoming popular with teens in troubleD. care more about discipline than life skills61. According to the passage, boarding schools_____.A. provide children with more freedomB. have their students’ time managed carefullyC. pay much attention to team building exercisesD. can make children feel safer62. What’s the purpose of this passage?A. To introduce schools for troubled teens.B. To show some problems of troubled teens.C. To teach parents how to educate their children.D. To remind parents to care for their children.【参考答案】59-62 BABA阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

2015届高考英语二轮专题训练:阅读理解(19)A(2014江苏卷)August 1990,Boston Dear Maya Shao-ming,To me, June 6,1990 is a special day. My long-awaited dream came true the minute your father cried, "A girl!" You are more than just a second child, more than just a girl to match our boy. You, little daughter, are the link to our female line, the legacy of another woman's pain and sacrifice 31 years ago.Let me tell you about your Chinese grandmother. Somewhere in Hong Kong, in the late fifties, a young waitress found herself pregnant (怀孕) by a cook, probablya co-worker at her restaurant. She carried the baby to term, suffered to giveit birth, and kept the little girl for the first three months of her life. I like to think that my mother—your randmother—loved me and fought to raise me on her own, but that the daily struggle was too hard. Worn down by the demands of the new baby and perhaps the constant threat of starvation, she made the painful decision to give away her girl so that both of us might have a chance for a better life.More likely, I was dropped at the orphanage (M JLR) steps or somewhere else. I will probably never know the truth. Having a baby in her unmarried state would have brought shame on the family in China, so she probably kept my existence a secret. Once I was out of her life, it was as if I had never been born. And so you and your brother and I are the missing leaves on a family tree.Do they ever wonder if we exist? Before I was two, I was adopted by an Anglo couple. Fed three square meals a day,I grew like a wild weed and grasped all the opportunities they had to offer—books, music, education, church life and community activities. In a family of blue-eyed blonds, though, I stood out like a sore thumb. Whether from jealousy or fear of someone who looked so different, my older brothers sometimes teased me about myunpleasing skin, or made fun of my clumsy walk. Moody and impatient, burdened by fears that none of us realized resulted from my early years of need, I was not an easy child to love. My mother and I conflicted countless times over the years, but gradually came to see one another as real human beings with faults and talents, and as women of strength in our own right. Lacking a mirror image in the mother who raised me, I had to seek my identity as a woman on my own. The Asian American community has helped me regain my double identity. But part of me will always be missing: my beginnings, my personal history, all the delicate details that give a person her origin. Nevertheless, someone gave me a lucky name "Siu Wai." "Siu" means "little," and "War means "clever." Therefore, my baby name was "Clever little one." Who chose those words? Who cared enough to note my arrival in the world?I lost my Chinese name for 18 years. It was Americanized for convenience to "Sue." But like an ill-fitting coat, it made me uncomfortable. I hated the name. But even more, I hated being Chinese. It took many years to become proud of my Asian origin and work up the courage to take back my birth-name. That, plus a little knowledge of classroom Cantonese, is all the Chinese culture I have to offer you. Not white, certainly, but not really Asian, I try to pave the way between the two worlds and bridge the gap for you. Your name, "Shao-ming," is very much like mine—"Shao" means "little." And "ming" is "bright," as in a shining sun or moon. Whose lives will you brighten, little Maya? Your past is more complete than mine, and each day I cradle you in your babyhood, generously giving you the loving care I lacked for my first two years. When I pat you, I comfort the lost baby inside me who still cries for her mother.Sweet Maya, it doesn't matter what you "become" later on. You have already fulfilled my wildest dreams.I love you,Mommy65. Why is June 6. 1990 a special day for Mommy?A. Her dream of being a mother came true.B. Why did Mommy name her daughter "Shao-ming?"A. To match her own birth-name.B. To brighten the lives of the family.C. To identify her with Chinese origin.D. To justify her pride in Chinese cultare.70.
