BMCC CLIPMarch 22, 2023Assignment 3, Draft 5Pyramid HierarchyAccording to “Motivation and Needs” by Virginia Quinn, Abraham Maslow categorizes various human motivations and needs into a six-step pyramid (from bottom to top): survival needs, stimulation needs, safety and security needs, love and belongingness needs, esteem and self-esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Based on their different conditions in life, people can be classified as having particular needs at particular steps in the pyramid; furthermore, the percentage of people who occupy the steps will decrease from bottom to top. I was particularly interested in the idea that people facing altered conditions in life can change stages in this pyramid. For instance, in a developed country, a citizen who normally lives in the esteem and self-esteem needs stage could fall to the survival needs stage because of war. In contrast, in a poor country, a wanderer who is usually focused on finding food could rise from the survival needs stage to the esteem and self-esteem stage because of winning a lottery.The first time I studied Maslow’s view of human motivation and needs was in my college psychology course. The professor assigned a test to classify us into a stage and analyzed the results according to the test in our class. The testing result showed that many of us were in the love and belongingness needs stage; however, some discrete cases were in the safety and security needs stage or at other levels. Definitely, students in college were still dependent on their parents and under their parents’ protection. They were satisfied with safety and security needs, and a lot of them seemed selfish because they were focused on achieving acceptance in friendship and love, occupying the stage of love and belongingness needs. But in a separate case, my classmate categorized himself into safety and security needs because a member of a gang had intimidatedhim by threatening to hit him one day. At this time, he urgently needed protection from the school office or security department. Therefore, through this experience, I realized that people in the same general circumstances could face different situations that could change their stage in Maslow’s motivations and needs.The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for a year, and many families have been destroyed. In Ukraine, citizens have had to hold weapons to defend their families and have looked to their country and international organizations to help them to end the war. It’s a tragedy in a peaceful generation. We can imagine that if a bomb was thrown into a city filled with happiness, then many of its residents would suddenly find themselves trapped in a miserable world. But this actually happened. Ukrainian citizens have been crushed under collapsed buildings, some died, and some had to await rescue. In this situation, they were eager to survive by securing water and food until rescue arrived. No matter how rich those people were or which stage they occupied, being in these conditions forced them down to the survival needs stage at the bottom of the pyramid. Therefore, which stage you are at in the pyramid depends on your surroundings, which can change. External conditions can push or pull you up or down to another need.When talking about M aslow’s theory in the CLIP class, we agreed that we all need esteem and self-esteem. We are from different countries and have different ages and genders. Before immigrating to America, somebody who had a massive business in his city needed self-actualization, and somebody who was in the war in Ukraine needs safety and security. We were in different conditions. But now that we have the same situation and are combined in the same class to study English, almost all of us need esteem and self-esteem. The next moment, after class, many of us will take a train to go home and worry about our safety. Indeed, we need safety and security at this moment because of the unsafe subways where there are frequent gunshots and robberies.When we arrive home, we are satisfied with our safety and security needs and back to the love and belongingness needs or other needs. Therefore, our needs will move in different stages based on various conditions which change every moment.In conclusion, I have tried to demonstrate that people in the same conditions can remain the same or change to a different stage in Maslow’s hierarchy because needs are dynamic and capable of shifting at any moment. Furthermore, Maslow’s motivations and needs theory looks relatively simple, but actually, it is a very complicated and giant study because everything is dynamic, and along with social development, the hierarchy will probably change into more levels. Who knew what other treasures and mysteries still lie hidden in those misty mountains and jungles, just waiting to be found?For now, I'll have to be content learning about the ancient Inca from books, museums and websites. But I'm determined to visit Machu Picchu myself someday and experience its majesty in person. We visited the Great Pyramids of Giza and I couldn't believe how huge they were. The biggest one is called the Great Pyramid of Cheops. It's over 450 feet tall - that's like a 40-story building! Canyou imagine how the ancient Egyptians built it using just ropes, pulleys and human workers? No machines at all!The pyramids were built as giant tombs for the pharaohs - the kings of ancient Egypt. Cheops' pyramid is estimated to have took over 20 years and 100,000 workers to construct. Just the weight of the stones alone is around 6 million tons! They had to drag and lift these massive stone blocks from miles away without any modern technology. It's simply mind-blowing how they accomplished such an epic feat.Inside the Great Pyramid, there are narrow passageways and chambers deep within. We went into the Grand Gallery which has a ceiling over 25 feet high. It felt like we were tiny ants walking through a mansion made for giants! Everything was built with precisely cut and fitted limestone and granite stones. The engineering and architecture were incredibly advanced for their time over 4,500 years ago.At the very center is the King's Chamber where Cheops' sarcophagus or stone coffin was located. Only the sarcophagus remains now as the treasures were all looted long ago. Still, you could feel the power and importance this place held. It gave me chills imagining the pharaoh being entombed here for eternity surrounded by all these massive stones.Outside the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx stood majestically guarding the plateau. This enormous statue has the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh carved from one single piece of stone! It's over 65 feet tall and 240 feet long. No one knows exactly when or why it was built, but most believe it was constructed to watch over the pyramid field. With its intense stare and mighty presence, I could see how the Sphinx instilled both awe and fear in ancient times.All around the Pyramids were fields of smaller tombs and evidence of a full-fledged city that once existed here. This whole plateau along the Nile River was the center of Egyptian civilization over 4,500 years ago. Imagine how it must have looked back then - the gleaming pyramids and Sphinx rising up from the desert with the winding river and lush green palms surrounding it. What an amazing and mystical sight it would have been!Even today, looking at the monolithic pyramids piercing the sky is simply breathtaking. As our guide explained, these were the tallest man-made structures in the world for almost 4,000 years until modern skyscrapers were built. Just think about that - the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World is STILL one ofthe most impressive feats of architecture and construction ever created!I'm so grateful I got to see the Great Pyramids in person. These massive tombs for the pharaohs stand as an enduring symbol of ancient Egypt's power, wealth and incredible architectural abilities. Despite being so old, the mysteries and majesty of the pyramids still captivate millions of visitors like me each year. Visiting this incredible UNESCO World Heritage site is an experience I'll never forget!。

Extraction of these derivative quantities may be viewed as a decomposition of a signal via terms of a local Taylor series expansions[1].Another widespread tool in signal and image pro-cessing is multi-scale decomposition.Apart from the advantages of decomposing signals into in-formation at different scales,the typical recursive form of these algorithms leads to large improve-ments in computational efficiency.Many authors have combined multi-scale decom-positions with differential measurements(eg., [2,3]).In these cases,a multi-scale pyramid is constructed,and then differential operators(typ-ically,differences of neighboring pixels)are ap-plied to the subbands of the pyramid.Since both the pyramid decomposition and the derivative operation are linear and shift-invariant,we may combine them into a single operation.The advan-tages of doing so are that the resulting derivatives may be more accurate(see[4]).In this paper,we propose a simple,efficient decomposition archi-tecture for combining these two operations.The decomposition is the latest incarnation of 1Source code andfilter kernels for implementation of the steerable pyramid are available via anonymous ftp from :pub/eero/steerpyr.tar.Z “steerable pyramid”,as developed in[5,6].Sim-ilar representations have been developed by Per-ona[7].In this linear decomposition,an image is subdivided into a collection of subbands localized in both scale and orientation.The scale tuning of thefilters is constrained by a recursive system di-agram(described below).The orientation tuning is constrained by the property of steerability[5].A set offilters form a steerable basis if(1)they are rotated copies of each other,and(2)a copy of thefilter at any orientation may be computed as a linear combination of the basisfilters.The sim-plest example of a steerable basis is a set of1 th-order directional derivatives.In addition to having steerable orientation sub-bands,the transform we describe is designed to be"self-inverting"(i.e.,the matrix corresponding to the inverse transformation is equal to the trans-pose of the forward transformation matrix)2,and is essentially aliasing-free.Most importantly,the pyramid can be designed to produce any number of orientation bands,.The resulting transform will be overcomplete by a factor of4 3.A summary of these properties,in comparison with two well-known multi-scale decompositions is given in table1.Note that the steerable pyramid retains some of the advantages of orthonormal wavelet transforms(eg.,basis functions are local-ized in space and spatial-frequency;the transform is a tight frame),but improves on some of their disadvantages(eg.,aliasing is eliminated;steer-able orientation decomposition).One obvious disadvantage is in computational efficiency:the steerable pyramid is substantially overcomplete. do-main corresponds to multiplication by a linear ramp function in the Fourier domain,which we rewrite in polar coordinates as follows:cos(note that we have described a derivative operator in the direction).We ignore the imaginary con-stant,and the factor of ,which is absorbed into the radial portion of the function.The relevant angular portion of the first derivative operator (in the direction)is thus cos .Higher-order directional derivatives correspondto multiplication in the Fourier domain by the ramp raised to a power,and thus the angular portion of the filter is cos for an th-order directional derivative.Knuttson and Granlund have also developed polar-separable filters with such angular components [10].The steerability of such functions has been discussed in our previous work [5,6].2.RADIAL DECOMPOSITIONThe radial function,,is constrained by both the desire to build the decomposition recursively (i.e.,using a “pyramid”algorithm),and the need to prevent aliasing from occurring during sub-sampling operations.The recursive system dia-gram foris given in figure 2.The filters 0and 0are necessary for pre-processing the image in preparation for the recur-sion.The recursive portion of the diagram corre-sponds to the subsystem contained in the dashed box.This subsystem decomposes a signal into two portions (lowpass and highpass).The low-pass portion is subsampled,and the recursion is performed by repeatedly applying the recursive transformation to the lowpass signal.The constraints on the filters in the diagram areas weighted least squares techniques in the Fourier domain to ap-proximately fit the constraints detailed above.The resulting filters are fairly compact (typically 99taps)and accurate (reconstruction error on the order of 45dB).Such filters may be designed for different values of ,depending on the appli-cation.For example,a design with a single bandat each scale (1)serves as a (self-inverting)replacement for the Laplacian pyramid.A designwith two bands (2)will compute multi-scale image gradients,which may be used for computa-tions of local orientation,stereo disparity or
