Review of who ruined the humanities
Who_ruined_the_humanities 中英文对比翻译
Who Ruined the Humanities? LEE SIEGEL LEE SIEGELYou've probably heard the baleful reports. The number of college students majoring in the humanities is plummeting, according to a big study released last month by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The news has provoked a flood of high-minded essays deploring the development as a symptom and portent of American decline.
But there is another way to look at this supposed revelation (the number of humanities majors has actually been falling since the 1970s).
The bright side is this: The destruction of the humanities by the humanities is, finally, coming to a halt. No more will literature, as part of an academic curriculum, extinguish the incandescence of literature. No longer will the reading of, say, 'King Lear' or D.H. Lawrence's 'Women in Love' result in the flattening of these transfiguring encounters into just two more elements in an undergraduate career″the onerous stuff of multiple-choice quizzes, exam essays and homework assignments.
4. Who ruined the humanities
In recent months I have seen a culture-of-education war developing between STEM fields and the Humanities. Allies of the Humanities have been quaint in their defense of the "life enriching" power of literature. What we must remind everyone is that study of the Humanities also makes you better at whatever you do: scientists and engineers need to be able to understand complicated systems of thought, too. The best and most successful scientists are avid readers. The most successful job applicants write cover letters without basic errors of logic or short-sighted goals.

Her groundbreaking research in the field of pharmacology has not only revolutionized the treatment of malaria but also lifted millions out of the grips of this deadly disease. It is for these reasons that I nominate Dr. Tu Youyou as the most deserving candidate for the annual Person of the Year award.Dr. Tu's journey into the world of science began with a humble beginning. She joined the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in 1955, with a mission to unlock the secrets of traditional Chinese medicine. Her perseverance and dedication to this cause would later lead to the discovery of artemisinin, a drug that has become a global frontline treatment for malaria.Malaria, a disease that has plagued humanity for centuries, was once a death sentence. But with the discovery of artemisinin, the tide has turned. This drug, derived from the sweet wormwood plant, has proven to behighly effective against the malaria parasite, saving millions of lives in the process.Dr. Tu's journey was not without its challenges. She faced skepticism and criticism, but she never gave up.
A review of Who Ruined the Humanities作业四Lee Siegel, born in December 1957, is a cultural critic and writer living in New Jersey. He received his B.A. from the Columbia University School of General Studies and his M.A. and M.Phil. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In this article the author gave us a question: Who Ruined the Humanities and answered it from his own point. The beginning of article states that the news has provoked a flood of high-minded essays deploring the development as a symptom and portent of American decline. the author looks at this revelation in other two dimensions, including its bright side and its disheartening fact. The bright side is this: The destruction of the humanities by the humanities is, finally, coming to a halt. The disheartening fact is that for every college professor who made Shakespeare or Lawrence come alive for the lucky few.It is also mentioned that the lack of formal education leads to numerous pernicious personal conditions. The thrust of Siegel’s point can effectively be summarized:In the one hand,it’s important to read the great poets and novelists. But not in a university classroom, where literature has been turned into a bland, soulless competition for grades and status. On the other hand, there were countless others who made the reading of literary masterpieces seem like two hours in the periodontist's chair. In their numbing hands, the term"humanities" became code for "and you don't even have to show up to get an A."According to the author’s own experience, it demonstrates that in classroom literature has lost its nature. He backs up his opinion by reflecting his literature reading memory. In his early life, he devoted himself in literature, so much so that his life was changed by it. After entering college, however, his precious interest in literature was finally submerged by the following academic annoyance. In the end, the writer argues that literature would revive as long as it disappears from the undergraduate curriculum, thus shedding lights upon a possible way for the rejuvenation of humanities. The biggest strength of this article, from my perspective, lies in its broad mentioning and quoting of poets and writers in all times. It grants the paper a sense of gentle breeze in the spring. The passage read, I can feel the overflowing passion toward liter ature from the bottom of the author’s heart. In addition, the fact-based discussion is pl easant and comfortable. However, now that the title is about how humanities been rui ned in college, perhaps other subject belonging to humanities, say music, history or ph ilosophy, should have also been briefly analyzed in the similar way, making the paper more convincing and more complete in logic.Overall, I generally agree with what the author claims in this paper. It is time for us to develop humanities, instead of intervening too much. I would like to recommen d it to whoever loves literature and wants to find out what do professionals think abou t the future of humanities.。

Human weaknesses are a fascinating topic to explore, and reading about them made me reflect on my own struggles and limitations. The article I read delved into several aspects of our nature that can lead us astray, from greed and complacency to fear and prejudice. Here are some of my thoughts on the subject. One of the most striking observations in the text was how people tend to overestimate their own abilities and achievements while downplaying those of others. This phenomenon, known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, is a consequence of our tendency to rely on our subjective view of ourselves rather than objective evidence. It can lead to disastrous consequences, such as people taking on tasks they are not competent to handle, ignoring experts' advice, or becoming arrogant and defensive when challenged. I could see this pattern in my own life as well, especially in situations where I felt threatened or vulnerable.Another weakness of human nature that caught my attention was our susceptibility to authority and conformity. As social animals, we instinctively seek approval from our peers and leaders, even at the cost of our integrity or sense of morality. This was evident in the famous Milgram experiment, where participants were willing to deliver lethal electric shocks to an innocent person simply because an authority figure told them to. It also manifests in groupthink or herd behavior, where people blindly follow the opinions and actions of others without questioning their validity or consequences. While conformity can have positive effects, such as promoting cohesion and cooperation, it can also lead to group polarization, intolerance, or even violence when taken to extremes.A related issue of human weakness is our tendency to favor our own group, tribe, or nation over others, often at the expense of fairness, empathy, or reason. This is called in-group bias, and it affects our judgments, emotions, and behavior in subtle and insidious ways. It can lead to stereotypes, discrimination, or even genocide, as history has shown repeatedly. Nevertheless, in-group bias is not inevitable or immutable; it can be countered by exposure to diverse perspectives, education, and moral reasoning. As the article suggests, awareness of our biases is the first step to overcoming them. Finally, the text touched on the topic of procrastination, which is a pervasive and vexing problem for many people, including myself. The article explained that procrastination is not just a lack of willpower or laziness, as some people assume, but a complex interplay of emotions, thoughts, and context. It is rooted in our fear of failure, our avoidance of discomfort, and our distorted perception of time and priorities. To overcome procrastination, we need to identify our specific triggers, challenge our irrational beliefs, and adopt effective strategies such as breaking down tasks into smaller steps, scheduling deadlines, or seeking accountability. This was a valuable insight for me, and I hope to apply it in my own life.In conclusion, reading about human weaknesses was both enlightening and challenging. I realized that I am not immune to the pitfalls of our nature, but that I can also learn from them and strive to be more aware, compassionate, and rational. By acknowledging our weaknesses, we can become stronger and moreresilient, both as individuals and as a society.Expanding on the topic of human weaknesses, one cannot ignore the tendency for greed and materialism, something that plagues humanity today. The desire for more possessions, money, power, and status often clouds our judgment, leading to unethical and harmful behavior. The recent scandals in the corporate world, the widening gap between the rich and poor, and the destruction of the environment all stem from our insatiable thirst for more. Furthermore, greed can give rise to other vices such as lying, cheating, or exploiting others, leading to a breakdown of trust and social harmony. It is essential to cultivate a sense of contentment, generosity, and ethical responsibility to counteract the corrosive effects of greed and materialism.Another weakness of human nature is complacency, a state of satisfaction or comfort that leads us to neglect our goals, values, and relationships. Complacency can arise from success, routine, or fear of change, making it difficult to pursue new challenges or passions. It can also breed indifference, apathy, or cynicism, eroding our hopes and aspirations. However, complacency can be overcome by fostering a growth mindset, embracing uncertainty, and constantly renewing our motivations and inspirations. By seeking continuous learning, improvement, and innovation, we can avoid the trap of complacency and achieve our fullest potential. Lastly, fear and anxiety are common human weaknesses that prevent us from living fully and authentically. Fear can take many forms, such as fear of failure, rejection, judgment, or even success. It can paralyze us, leading us to avoid risks, opportunities, or relationships that would enrich our lives. Anxiety, on the otherhand, is a general feeling of unease or agitation that can arise from various sources, such as uncertainty, trauma, or chemical imbalances. It can disrupt our cognitive and emotional functioning, leading to insomnia, panic attacks, or depression. However, fear and anxiety can be managed by various coping mechanisms such as mindfulness, relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or medication. It is crucial to seek help and support when these emotions become overwhelming, as they can impact our health and wellbeing. In conclusion, exploring human weaknesses can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor that helps us understand ourselves and others better. By acknowledging our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, we can become more empathetic, tolerant, and compassionate towards others, leading to a more harmonious and equitable society. Furthermore, by working on ourselves, we can overcome our limitations and achieve our fullest potential, leading to a fulfilling and meaningful life.。
Throughout the vast expanse of time, human history has been a tapestry woven with threads of triumph and tragedy, progress and peril. As we reflect upon the chronicles of our past, we find a multitude of lessons that continue to shape ourpresent and future. The dawn of civilization marks the first significant chapterin human history. From the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia to the fertile plains of the Indus Valley, the rise ofagriculture allowed for the establishment of permanent settlements. This shift from nomadic life to a more sedentary existence was pivotal, as it led to the development ofcomplex societies, the birth of writing, and the rise of the first cities. As empires rose and fell, the course of human history wasoften dictated by the ambitions of great leaders and the ingenuity of their people. The legacies of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans continue to influence modern culture, politics, and philosophy. The Roman Republic, in particular, set a precedent for governance and law that is still referenced in contemporary democracies. However, the story of human history is not solely one of conquest and glory. It is also a narrative of resilience and adaptation. The Black Death in the 14th century, for instance, decimated populations across Europe, leading to profoundsocial and economic changes. Similarly, the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492 opened up new avenues for exploration and colonization, but also resulted in the tragic spread of diseases and the subjugation of indigenous peoples. The Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries was a turning point that dramatically altered the way humanslived and worked. It brought about unprecedented economic growth and urbanization, but also led to new challenges such as pollution, labor exploitation, and social inequality. In the 20th century, humanity faced its darkest hours with two World Wars that claimed millions of lives and reshaped the geopolitical landscape. Yet, it was also a time of great innovation and social change, with the civil rights movement, the feminist movement, and the fight against apartheid all contributing to a more just and equitable world.Today, we stand at the crossroads of a new era defined by technology and globalization. The internet and social media have connected us in ways previously unimaginable, while climate change and economic interdependence demand collective action on a global scale. In conclusion, human history is a complex and multifaceted narrative that offers a wealth of insights into the human condition. It is a story of growth and learning, of mistakes and achievements, and ultimately, of the potential for humanity to overcome its challenges and strive for a better tomorrow. As we continue to write the next chapters of ourhistory, it is imperative that we draw upon the wisdom of the past to navigate the uncertainties of the future.。

The debate over whether the humanities are obsolete has been ongoing for many years. Some argue that in today's rapidly advancing technological world, the study of the humanities is no longer relevant or practical. However, others maintain that the humanities play a crucial role in society and should not be considered outdated. In this essay, I will explore both sides of the argument and offer my own perspective. Those who believe that the humanities are outdated often point to the rise of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields as evidence. They argue that in a world dominated by technological advancements, skills in fields such as literature, philosophy, history, and art are not as valuable or in demand. With the increasing focus on practical skills and job training, they suggest that the humanities have been pushed to the sidelines.Furthermore, some critics of the humanities argue that in a culture that prioritizes instant gratification and practicality, the study of the humanities is seen as a luxury rather than a necessity. In a society that values quick solutions and tangible outcomes, the abstract and introspective nature of the humanities is often dismissed as irrelevant. On the other hand, proponents of the humanities argue that these fields are more important now than ever before. They assert that the study of literature, philosophy, history, and art provides invaluable insights into the human experience that cannot be obtained through scientific or technological means. The humanities encourage critical thinking, creativity, empathy, and cultural understanding – skills that are essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world. Moreover, the humanities offer a unique perspective on the ethical and moral dilemmas that arise in society. By studying history and philosophy, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the values and beliefs that shape our world. Through literature and art, we can explore different perspectives and cultures, fostering empathy and tolerance across diverse communities. In addition, the humanities play a crucial role in preserving and celebrating human creativity and expression. Art, literature, and music have the power to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotions in ways that are unique and irreplaceable. The humanities provide a platform for storytelling, self-expression, and personal growth, enriching our lives in ways that go beyond mere practicality. In conclusion, while the debate over whether the humanities are obsolete continues, it is clear that these fields hold a significant value in society. The humanities provide us with a deeper understanding of the human experience, foster critical thinking and creativity, and promote cultural understanding and empathy. By embracing the humanities, we can cultivate a more thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged society – one that values the diverse perspectives and insights that the humanities offer. Rather than dismissing the humanities as outdated, we should recognize and celebrate their enduring relevance and importance in shaping our world.。

Are Humanities Outdated? The debate over whether the humanities are outdated has been a topic of discussion for many years. Some argue that in a society increasingly driven by technology and the sciences, the humanities have lost their relevance. However, others believe that the humanities are more important now than ever before.Proponents of the view that the humanities are outdated often argue that in today's fast-paced world, where information is constantly changing and evolving, the humanities are no longer as valuable as they once were. They argue that fields such as literature, philosophy, and history are no longer practical or useful in today's society, and that students would be better served focusing on more "practical" subjects such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). However, supporters of the humanities argue that these fields are essential for understanding the complexities of the human experience and the world in which we live. They argue that without a grounding in the humanities, students will lack the critical thinking skills, empathy, and cultural understanding necessary to navigate the world around them. They also arguethat the humanities help us to make sense of the human experience, and to understand our place in the world.Furthermore, the humanities provide us with a broader perspective on the world, enabling us to think critically about society and the world around us. They also allow us to understand and appreciate different cultures, histories, and belief systems, fostering empathy and tolerance in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. In addition, the humanities also provide us with important skills that are essential for success in both our personal and professional lives. Skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and creativity are all developed through studying the humanities. These skills are valuable in any field or profession, and are essential for success in the rapidly changing global economy.Overall, while it may be tempting to dismiss the humanities as outdated or irrelevant in today's society, the truth is that they are more important now than ever before. The humanities provide us with a deeper understanding of the world, help us to think critically about society and the human experience, and provide us with essential skills for success in our personal and professional lives. In a world that is increasingly complex andinterconnected, the humanities are not only relevant, but essential for understanding and navigating the world around us.。

The-Review-of-Who-Ruined-the-Humanities--(作业四)
The Review of Who Ruined the Humanities?Who Ruined the Humanities?is adapted from the works of Mr. Siegel. He is the author of four books, most recently, "Are You Serious: How to Be True and Get Real in the Age of Silly." A version of this article appeared July 13, 2013, on page C1 in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal, with the headline: Who Ruined the Humanities? The article is mainly about the currently issues the humanities is confronted with, and what we should recognize in the change. At first, the writer cites a baleful report that the number of college students majoring in the humanities is plummeting, and gives two different perceptions about this change. Then paper introduces the ruminations about the decline of students majored in the humanities and the serious consequences of this. Next, the author elaborates the process that how the humanities became the university curriculum and some historical reasons, and the history of teaching literature as a profession. In the fourth part, it introduces the criticism of Trilling about the teaching of literature in the university. In the fifth part, the author talks something past about literature and himself. Before he entered university life, he loves literature very much and plunges with wonderful literature, but once in the college classroom, this precious, alternate life inside him got thrown back into that dimension of his existence. Then the author clarifies the purpose of this article, and what he wants to say is he is against these startling epiphanies of the irrational, unspoken, unthought-of side of human life into the college classroom and turning them into the bland exercises in competition, hierarchy and information-accumulation that are these works' mortal enemies. At last, the author concludes that the free literary is the real literary. In a level, I agree with what the author notices in the paper. We have to study literature as soon as we enter the classroom, no matter what we like or not, and we don’t have any choice. In somehow, this coercion makes us weaken the interest in literature. In my case, I do not like literature class so far, and it is a kind of torment for me. Just like what the writer notices in the article “there were countless others whomade the reading of literary masterpieces seem like two hours in the periodontist's chair. In their numbing hands, the term 'humanities' became code for 'and you don't even have to show up to get an A.'” The purpose of learning literary is just for coping with exams and getting high score. We are only to learn for learning, and it doesn’t come from our curiosity and interest. But whether it should be canceled literature curriculums in the classroom. In my opinion, I think it shouldn’t, ho wever, there ought to have more options. The cancel of liberal arts education would constitute a serious subtraction. Without it, we shall no longer have a segment of the population that has a proper standard with which to judge true intellectual achievement. The loss of liberal arts education can only result in replacing authoritative judgment with rivaling expert opinions, the vaunting of the second- and third-rate in politics and art, the supremacy of the faddish and the fashionable in all of life. Without that glimpse of the best that liberal arts education conveys, a nation might wake up living in the worst, and never notice. Liberal arts education may have subtle effect. For most people, how many people will come to learn literature out of the class.。

Review of who ruined the humanities
Last week I read the passage who ruined the humanities. The author expresses his opinion about humanities by humanities. Recently the number of humanities majors has actually been falling. On one hand the destruction of the humanities by the humanities is coming to a halt. On the other hand, humanities has lost its meaning. The decreasing number of majors in humanities has risen to grave reflection on the education in humanities. But the result is literature needs only to be read,it needn’t to be taught. At the beginning,we want to make sense of lives by literature, but teaching literature can’t take us the cultivate empathy or moral refinement. There after, Mr. Siegel backs up his opinion by reflecting his literature reading memory. In his early life, he devoted himself in literature, so much so that his life was changed by it. After entering college, however, his precious interest in literature was finally submerged by the following academic annoyance. In the end, the writer argues that literature would revive as long as it disappears from the undergraduate curriculum, thus shedding lights upon a possible way for the rejuvenation of humanities.so humanities should be read than taught. At the present, people tend to engage in fields that are most relevant to the life around us.
As far as I am concerned,I agree with author’s idea. What make me most impressive is Humanities are not need to be taught, we need to read literatures attentively rather than having inane commentary and sterile testing.Literature changed our life and mind, Reading books can cultivate our empathy, curiosity, aesthetic taste and moral refinement. If there were no literature we can only be a human of biological. As the author takes it books took us far from ourselves into experiences that had nothing to do with our life, yet spoke to our life. So literature important to all of us, with the ruin of the Humanities we cannot look at it and do nothing. We read literatures is to understand and improve our life quality,so we needn’t to get high score to prove learn literatures. There are less and less people really love literatures. People tend to make life easily than make sense of it.professors
in colleges should encourage students to read books to pursuit the meaning of life. Reading is a necessary part of our life, everyone could spend more time on reading. Developing humanities, and try to understand adddressors experience. Let books take us to a new circumstances. It is our duty to develop literature and make it prosperous. That is precious wealth we leave to our later generations.。
