A good memory is often seen as something that comes naturally, while a bad memory as something that cannot be changed. In fact, there is something that you can do to improve your memory. Here are some suggestions for you.
Take an interest.
We all remember the things we are interested in, and always forget the ones that bore us. This explains the reason why schoolboys remember football results easily but struggle with dates from their history lessons! Develop an active interest in what you want to remember. One way to make yourself more interested is to ask questions — the more, the better!
Repeat things in chunks (块).
Repeating things in chunks is the best way to remember things for a short time, for example, remembering a phone number for a few seconds. Grouping numbers may help you to remember them. The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at them in “groups” or “chunks” repeatedly (反复地), and it becomes much easier: 1493 1789 1931 8483.
Invent a story.
To remember long lists, try inventing a story which includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this way. When they were tested later, they could remember about 90% of them. The
test result was really amazing!
Take physical exercise.
Physical exercise is important for your memory, because it increases your heart rate and sends more oxygen to your brain, and that makes your memory work better. Exercise also lowers stress. As we know, too much pressure is very bad for memory.
()41. Why is it hard for some boys to remember dates from their history lessons?
A. Because the lessons are not useful.
B. Because there are too many dates.
C. Because they’re easy to forget.
D. Because the boys have no interest in them.
()42. What’s the best way to remember things for a short time?
A. Take an interest.
B. Repeat things in chunks.
C. Invent a story.
D. Imagine a picture in mind.
()43. What does the underlined word “that” refer to?
A. Much more food and water.
B. Faster heart rate and more oxygen.
C. Ordinary news in everyday life.
D. More stress in your mind.
()44. What can we infer from this passage?
A. Most of the schoolboys have a poor memory in study.
B. Grouping numbers can’t help you remember numbers easily.
C. Lowering stress is an effective way to improve memory.
D. Only a few people have a good memory.
()45. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To tell us how to improve memory.
B. To tell us how to forget bad memories.
C. To tell us how to use memory well.
D. To tell us how to have less stress.

Dear Lucy,
I’m happy to hear from you. I know you are worried about going to London for studying because your English is not very good. Now, I want to tell you some methods to improve your English.
In my opinion, you can sometimes talk with your parents in English at home. To learn English well, you can use mobile English learning software. It is a good way to practise your listening, speaking and writing. What’s more, try to read more English magazines and newspapers and listen to English songs. Last, you should be confident and not be afraid to communicate with others in English. Nobody will laugh at you.
I hope you will have a good time in London.
Yours,
Jack.
