The rough guide to marketing success used to be that you got what you paid for. No longer. While traditional, "paid" media, such as television commercials and print advertisements, still play a major role, companies today can exploit many alternative forms of media. Consumers passionate about a product may create "earned" media by willingly promoting it to friends, and a company may leverage "owned" media by sending e-mail alerts about products and sales to customers registered with its Web site. The way consumers approach the process of making purchase decisions means that marketing's impact stems from a broad range of factors beyond conventional paid media.
Paid and owned media are controlled by marketers promoting their own products. For earned media, such marketers act as the initiator for users' responses. But in some cases, one marketer's
owned media become another marketer's paid media -- for instance, when an e-commerce retailer sells ad space on its Web site. We define such sold media as owned media whose traffic is so strong that other organizations place their content or e-commerce engines within that environment. This trend, which we believe is still in its infancy, effectively began with retailers and reavel providers such as airlines and hotels and will no doubt go further. Johnson & Johnson, for example, has created Baby Center, a stand-along media property that promotes complementary and even competitive products. Besides generating income, the presence of other marketers makes the site seem objective, gives companies opportunities to learn valuable information about the appeal of other companies marketing, and may help expand user traffic for all companies concerned.
The same dramatic technological changes that have provided marketers with more and more diverse communications choices have also increased the risk that passionate consumers will voice their opinions in quicker, more visible, and much more damaging ways. Such hijacked media are the opposite of earned media: an asset or campaign becomes hostage to consumers, other stakeholders, or activists who make negative allegations about a brand or product. Members of social networks, for instance, are learning that they can hijack media to apply pressure on the business that originally created them.
If that happens passionate consumers would try to persuade others to boycott products, putting the reputation of the target company at risk. In such a case, the company's response may not be sufficiently quick or thoughtful, and the learning curve has been steep. Toyota Motor, for example, alleviated some of the damage from its recall crisis earlier this year with a relatively quick and well-orchestrated social-media response campaign, which included efforts to engage with consumers directly on sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
(1)Consumers may create "earned" media when they are ________.
A. obsessed with online shopping at certain Web sites
B. inspired by product-promoting e-mail sent to them
C. eager to help their friends promote quality products
D. enthusiastic about recommending their favorite products.
(2)The author indicates in Para. 3 that earned media ________.
A. invite constant conflicts with passionate consumers
B. can be used to produce negative effects in marketing
C. may be responsible for fiercer competition
D. deserve all the negative comments about them
(3)Toyota Motor's experience is cited as an example of ________.
A. responding effectively to hijacked media
B. persuading customers into boycotting product
C. cooperating with supportive consumers
D. taking advantage of hijacked media
【答案】(1)D
(2)B
(3)A

根据第一段中的“Consumers passionate about a product may create “earned” media by willingly promoting it to friends”可知,对产品充满热情的消费者可能会通过主动向朋友推销产品来创造“口碑”媒体。

根据倒数第二段对于“劫持媒体”的介绍和最后一段中的“If that happens passionate consumers would try to persuade others to boycott products, putting the reputation of the target company at risk. In such a case, the company's response may not be sufficiently quick or thoughtful, and the learning curve has been steep.”

而下文以Toyota Motor(该公司在今年早些时候的召回危机中采取了相对迅速和精心策划的社交媒体应对行动,包括在Twitter和Facebook等网站上直接与消费者互动,从而减轻了部分损失)为例,则展示了当发生“劫持媒体”这种情况时,如果应对迅速得当,那么就可以减轻损失。

故选A。

Water is a necessity of life. Rain, especially, helps plants grow and stay green. But too much rain, especially in cities, can lead to flooding. That can cause waste water systems to overflow and send pollutants into rivers and other waterways. To fight the problem, several cities in the United States are starting programs like rooftop gardens.
A team at the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital has created a garden on the top of one school building. The garden holds many kinds of plants to help absorb rainwater and grow food at the same time. Architect David Bell has designed five "green roofs" for the university. He says he is excited about the project because "it meant doing something more than just dealing with storm water management. It took advantage of a resource above the city and these flat roofs that aren't doing anything really became something that was about urban agriculture." Rainwater is collected in large containers and sent through a system that waters the rooftop garden. The roof is filled with green life that appeals to insects.
In cities, "you don't have that many spaces to choose from and so rooftops are just (unused) space," says Caitlin Arlotta. She is a student in the school's Urban Agriculture program. The
project is part of a research program to see which plants do well on rooftops. The researchers are looking at plants including strawberries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The university also has other green spaces. "We also have our own farm experiments," Arlotta said. "Within each of those growing systems, we want to be able to tell people which sorts of these crops grow the best."
Sandy Farber Bandier helps run UDC's Master Gardener program. It seeks to improve cities and make them beautiful by training people to become Master Gardeners. She says she's been surprised by the garden's output. "My biggest surprise was that we produced 4, 250 pounds of produce the first year and was able to spread that to people in need." She also likes being able to show people who live in D. C. and others beyond the nation's capital what and how food can be grown on a rooftop. "This is the future for food. You grow it here, you prepare it in a commercial kitchen, you distribute through farmers markets, food trucks, and then you recycle."
(1)What do we know about the rooftop gardens?
A. Rooftop gardens are very common in average neighborhoods.
B. There are many sorts of plants there which help take in rainwater.
C. They're playing an important role in the city's food supply.
D. Rooftop gardens are no more than containers to collect rainwater.
(2)What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Rooftops can offer enough space to plant crops.
B. Many plants like strawberries can grow well on rooftops.
C. Some university students are participating in the Urban Agriculture program.
D. The plants in rooftop gardens are attractive to many insects.
(3)How does Sandy Farber Bandier feel about the future of rooftop gardens?
A. Confident.
B. Doubtful.
C. Worried.
D. Ambiguous.
(4)What is the best title for the text?
A. Rainwater Necessity for Plant Life
B. Green Roofs-The Future of Urban Agriculture
C. The United States' Agriculture Program
D. Rooftop Gardens-Food Paradise
【答案】(1)B
(2)C
(3)A
(4)B

"研究人员正在研究包括草莓、西红柿和甘薯在内的植物。

这所大学还有其他绿地。

","我们也有自己的农场实验",由此可推断出有许多大学生正在参与这项城市农业计划。

故选C。

(3)考查推理判断。

根据最后一段中的“She also likes being able to show people who live in D. C. and others beyond the nation's capital what and how food can be grown on a rooftop. ‘This is the future for food. You grow it here, you prepare it in a commerc ial kitchen, you distribute through farmers markets, food trucks, and then you recycle. ’" Sandy Farber Bandier 喜欢向住在华盛顿特区和首都以外地区的人们展示在屋顶上可以种植什么以及如何种植食物。

她认为"这是食品的未来。

你在这里种植,在商业厨房里准备,通过农贸市场分发。

食品卡车,然后回收利用。

" 由此可推断出她对于屋顶花园的未来很自信。

故选A。

Families around the country are finding new options for their children's midday meal thanks to a growing number of delivery options catering to students. Kiddos Catering in Chicago adopts a method of providing restaurant meals to schools that contract with it. Owner Michelle Moses and her staff work with area restaurants to create a variety of kid-friendly choices and deliver the meals to the schools five days a week. Parents select the lunches from an online order form that lists the day's featured restaurant and its menu choices.
"Each day is a different restaurant with six to 10 menu options," she said. "It offers so much choice to kids." The service appeals to parents because they think their children are less likely to toss out restaurant food than a packed lunch, Ms. Moses said. The schools appreciate that Moses handles the ordering, payment, pickup, and food distribution in the cafeteria. "Schools really want to be in the business of educating kids," she said. "They don't want to be in the food and beverage(餐饮) business."
That doesn't mean that schools always like it when teens (or parents) take it upon themselves to order food through phone apps. Many schools have banned that practice, citing safety concerns about delivery drivers showing up at school unannounced and the burden of tracking down students to alarm them that their meals have arrived.
"These types of deliveries pose an unnecessary security risk for students and staff," said Bernard Watson, director of community relations for Gwinnett County Public Schools in Suwanee, Ga. "In addition, our award-winning school nutrition program provides students with a wide
variety of tasty, nutritious meals on-site, so there is no need to order food from outside."
Jacob Levin, a recent graduate of Bexley High School in Bexley, Ohio, relied on a sub shop to deliver a sandwich to him during lunchtime meetings or other appointments that conflicted with his lunch period. "It was a convenient option. In most cases, I would not have been able to eat at school if it weren't for the delivery option," he said. "Having a restaurant-quality sub also was much more enjoyable than cafeteria food."
(1)What can we learn about Kiddos Catering?
A. It should be ordered online.
B. It is a non-profit food program.
C. It delivers the meals to the schools twice a day.
D. It mainly offers the featured dishes of a restaurant.
(2)What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The aim of the food and beverage business.
B. A suitable time for school meals.
C. Advantages of the delivering school lunch.
D. An alternative to the school cafeteria.
(3)What is Bernard Watson's concern for delivering food?
A. It's less healthy than that in the school cafeteria.
B. It causes a potential danger to students.
C. It attracts students' attention to study.
D. Its arrival is usually not punctual.
(4)What is Jacob Levin's attitude to the change of the school lunch?
A. Neutral.
B. Careless.
C. Supportive.
D. Unfavorable.
【答案】(1)A
(2)C
(3)B

Everyone at Pacsafe is always eager to get out in the world and enjoy new cultures, food, and experiences. With that in mind we asked a few of our top travel bugs for their best travel destination recommendations for 2019. They also included their favorite Pacsafe bag to take on the trip. Enjoy and hopefully get some ideas for your own globe - trotting adventure.
Sri Lanka - Alison Hanko, Global Marketing Director
I'm going to Sri Lanka this summer holiday and can't wait. It's close to Hong Kong where I live and I've always wanted to go. The food is supposed to be amazing. It seems really relaxing and I really want to do the Kandy to Badulla train ride, which looks just stunning. We've booked a good mix of beaches, some time in a safari tent to hopefully see elephants in the wild.
For my bag, I'll most likely take the Quiksilver 40L Pack because it has the built-in wet pack for my bikinis. It's also a great size for a week-long trip in a warm climate.
Japan - Ben Barras, Creative Director
Japan is definitely my best travel destination recommendation. The culture, the streets, the
architecture, the inspiration you get from all of that is amazing. The food is also fascinating. It's where I'm most planning to go. Tokyo obviously, but also visiting the mountains. You can go snowboarding, which I haven't done for years.
I have a Vibe 25L Backpack which you can pack a lot in. The thing I like most about it is that it's compact, but still fits plenty in. I'll pair that up with a larger travel bag for the rest of my things and use the backpack to get around day to day.
Berlin - Phil Hayes, Executive VP of Global Design
For me, it's definitely Berlin. I'm particularly excited about the fashion, which I hear is pretty full on. Also the art galleries and history. Food, nightlife.
