2.How to use the past continuous tense to tell the things happening in the past. Teaching methods:
Task -based approach, cooperative approach
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Learn some new words
Step 2 Show a map of china to introduce the earthquake in Wenchuan in 2008.
Then show some sentences to tell the students what my classmates and I were doing when the earthquake happened.
I was having an English class when the earthquake came.
I was taking a shower when the earthquake began.
I was sleeping at the time of the earthquake.
I was reading at home at the time of the earthquake, because it rained heavily
outside.
Then ask the students to observe these sentences and lead them to find the
structure “was +doing”. That is the grammar we’ll learn in this class, the past
progressive tense.
Step 3 Show more pictures to learn the present progressive tense and the past progressive tense in pairs. Then show all the sentences on the screen and
ask the students to think and make summaries by themselves.

Step 5 Play a guessing game to practice the different sentence structures of the tense.
Then make a summary for the past progressive tense.
Step 6 Learn the when-adverbials and while-adverbials through observation.
1. when引导的时间状语从句,从句中的动词可以是非延续性动词也可以
是延续性动词。

while引导的时间状语从句,从句中的动词必须是延续性动词。

2. 当主句和从句都是用进行时时,只能用while,表示“与此同时”两个
动作同时进行,若两个动作含有对比意义,还可理解为“然而”。

3. when引导的时间状语从句,从句中的动词是非延续动词,从句中的时
态一般用一般过去时。

First,watch a short video about the hero Lin Hou in the earthquake in
Wenchuan. Then finish an English report about this boy. At last, ask several
students to do the report.
