A Teaching Tool or a Distraction?
After 20 years of teaching, Miriam Morgenstern is calling it quits this month. The Lowell High School history and ESL teacher's reason to leave the classroom is her frustration with students and their cell phones. The texting, tweeting, and Snapchatting during class time are "an incredible distraction, and makes it much more difficult to teach," she said. "It's pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video."
It is the most vexing issue of the digital age for teachers and administrators: What to do about students' cell phones? Some maintain that smartphones and other devices in schools are crucial to **petitive in a global market, while others insist that phones and tablets distract students, compromising their learning and focus.
"You'll get kids saying, 'I'll look something up for English, and while I'm here let me quickly check my Instagram or Twitter feed.' And then it's, 'Oh, I never realized this girl said that to me,' and now they're distracted and not really engaged with their lesson plan," said Joni Siani, a Braintree psychologist and author of "Celling Your Soul: No App for Life," about how digital media affect young people.
Educators don't agree on much when it comes to digital devices in classrooms, especially since the debate over cell phones is part of a broader conversation about a cultural shift underway in classrooms—a move away from the traditional model of teachers imparting information to students, to one where students actively participate in their own learning, using mobile devices to access the Web, educational apps, and other tools.
4. 4.Read carefully the following excerpt on military training and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should:

- comment on whether military training is necessary for students.
You should support yourself with information from the excerpt.
Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language
quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
Is Military Training Necessary for Freshmen?
With the new school semester around the corner, millions of Chinese students are set to undergo a 2-week-**pulsory military training to kick off their new lives in high schools or colleges. Is military training beneficial for students and should it be compulsory?
"It doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, why we have to go through all these terrible experiences. Maybe it is a valuable memory to someone, but it never was to me. I went through three military trainings, when I began junior high school, high school and university, respectively, and each was the worst time I had during my stay in each school. We're merely trained in marching and walking moves, and it never makes any sense to me how we're gonna defend our country with this perfectly synchronized walking pace. Our trainers were soldiers and they were usually rude and very unfair when dealing with us. I was constantly being scolded and criticized during the training even when I was definitely obeying", said Sunny Li, a student of Communication University of China.
However, some argues that there is nothing wrong with military training when you are in college, it is good for discipline and you learn how to work together as a team; also, when a country might get into a situation where its citizens are needed to defend the country they have some basic knowledge on how to do it.。
