The Big Wild Goose and the Weird Middle School English Exam

One day, a big wild goose named Gary was flying south for the winter with his flock. Gary loved being a goose. He loved flapping his wings, honking loudly, and swimming in ponds. Being a goose was the best!

Suddenly, Gary saw something very strange on the ground below. It looked like a huge piece of paper with tiny writing all over it. Gary was a very curious goose, so he decided to fly down and take a closer look.

As Gary got closer, he could read the weird little writing. It said "Middle School English Exam - Essay Question: If you don't change, you will become ugly. Discuss." Gary had no idea what a "middle school English exam" was, but he did understand the question itself.

"If I don't change, I'll become ugly? What a silly thing to ask!" Gary honked to himself. "I'm already a beautiful goose. I don't need to change at all."

Just then, a tiny human crawled out from under the huge piece of paper. It was a middle school student who was supposed to be writing the exam but had fallen asleep.

"Oh no, the time! I haven't even started my essay yet!" cried the student. "I'll be ugly forever if I don't change and write something for this question."

Gary flapped his wings and landed next to the student. With a honk, he said "Don't worry, kid! I've got the perfect essay for that question."

The student looked confused. "You're...you're a goose. You can't write an English essay!"

But Gary insisted. "Just get me a pen and I'll write it for you. Trust me, I have a great perspective on this topic."

Still confused but desperate, the student found a pen and held it out for Gary to take in his beak. Gary dipped the pen in ink and began writing on the huge exam paper:

Hello examiners! I am a big wild goose and I would like to tell you why I completely disagree with the statement "if you don't change, you will become ugly." In my opinion, staying true to yourself is the most beautiful thing you can do.

I was born a goose, and I have always been a goose. I have never changed into any other animal. Year after year, I am the same gorgeous grey goose with a bright orange beak and webbed feet. My feathers get a new lush coating every spring but other than that, I never change. And you know what? I am totally beautiful just the way I am! All my goose friends agree that I'm one good-looking bird.

If I tried to change into something else, that would just make me ugly. Can you imagine if I suddenly tried to be a robin or a duck instead of a goose? How weird and ugly would that be? A little robin body waddling around honking and flapping like a goose? Or a duck quacking with a long goose neck? No thank you!

The key to being beautiful is embracing who you truly are on the inside. If you're a goose, be the most gorgeous goose you can be. If you're a boy, be the most amazing young man. If you're a middle school student, be the best student in your class! Don't
