Passage 1

Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Qomolangma. On May 29, 1953 he climbed the highest mountain then known to man—29,000 feet straight up. He was spoken highly of for his spirit when he came back. However, until we read his book, High Adventure, we don't understand that Hillary had to grow into this success.

You see, in 1952 he tried to climb Qomolangma, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to give a speech to its members. Hillary was given a warm welcome when walking on stage. People there thought him as a hero, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He moved away from the microphone and walked to the side of the stage.

He raised one hand and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, “Qomolangma, you beat me the first time, but I’ll beat you the next time because you’ve grown all you are going to grow, but I'm still growing!”

Passage 2

Junko was born in 1939 and grew up in a small town in Japan. During her childhood, she was thin and weak. At age 10, Junko went on a school trip. The students climbed two mountains, and Junko loved it. She could climb in her own time and ability.

After Junko graduated from university in 1962, she joined several climbing clubs. But they had mostly men members. Some even refused to climb with a woman. They thought women should stay at home only. In 1965, Junko married a well-known Japanese climber. Over the years, they climbed all the highest mountains of Japan.

At the same time Junko started a woman's climbing club. By 1972, she was chosen to lead a team of women to climb Qomolangma. It took three years for the 15 women to train and raise money for their climb. Finally in 1975, the team went to climb the mountain. They found nine guides to help them climb up the mountain. Everything went well until the morning of May 4. Suddenly a huge amount of snow and ice fell on them. Junko and some others were buried(被埋) in the snow. One guide saved Junko. She rushed to help others. Everyone was alive but they all hurt badly, including Junko. However, the team decided to continue their climb. About two weeks later, on May 16, Junko reached the top of Qomolangma. She was the first woman to stand on top of the highest mountain in the world.

Junko's will and her power helped her achieve her goals. Junko still climbs mountains. She wants people to remember her as "the free spirit of the mountains." Once she said, "Skills and ability alone do not
