Boxing day is on December26th, the day after Christmas, and is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled by the British except for the United States of America, in clud ing Can ada, Australia and New Zeala nd.
Despite its name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with competition sports.
While the exact origins of the holiday are unclear, it is likely that Boxing Day began in England during the Middle Ages. Somehistorians say the holiday developed because servants were asked to work on Christmas Day, but took the following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would prese nt them with gift boxes. Ano ther theory is that the alms(扌捐款,救济物)boxes in churches were opened and the moneywas given to the poor on December26th. Still some believe that, centuries ago, on the day after Christmas, members of the mercha nt(商业)class would give boxes containing food and fruit, cloth ing and money to bus in essme n and serva nts.
The gifts were an expressi on of tha nkfuln ess, much like today whe n people receive bonuses(奖金)from their employers because of a well-done job. These gifts, given in
boxes, gave the holiday its name, “ Boxing Day ” .
Traditionally, Boxing Day is a day when families get together. It is a day of watching sports games with family. In the past, hunting was one of the favorite activities on this day. People usually went hunting for wrens or foxes. Today, Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and sharing of friendship and love. Government buildings and small businesses are closed but the malls are open. Shopping is a popular Boxing Day activity, and the malls are usually filled with bargains. Besides these activities, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping an individual family that is in need. Boxing Day has mainly becomean extension of the Christmas holiday, giving working families one more day as the happy time of a year.

Astr on auts on shorter spaceship tasks ofte n work very long days. Tasks
are scheduled so tightly that break times are often used to finish the day' s work. This type of schedule is far too dema nding for long missi ons on the Intern ati onal Space Statio n (ISS). ISS crew members usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off

can com muni cate with family and frie nds by email, Internet phone and through private video conferen ces.
While astronauts cannot go to a football game or a movie in space, there
are many familiar activities that they can still enjoy. Before a mission,
the family and friends of each ISS crew member put together a collection of family photos, messages, videos and read ing material for the astr on auts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth. During their mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters. And as from early 2020, the Internet became available on the ISS, giving astronauts the chance to do
some“Websurfing ” in their personal time. Besides relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space.
Many astronauts say that one of the most relaxing things to do in space is to look out
of the window and stare at the universe and the Earth. Both the shuttle and the ISS circle
the planet several times each day, and every moment offers a new view of the Earth 's vast land mass and oceans.

33. According to the context, which of the following best describes the families of the
astronauts on the ISS?
A. They are excited and fascinated.

upset.
C. They are patient and annoyed.
D. They are caring and
thoughtful.
34. In the last paragraph, the writer shows that astronauts ________ .

C. regard space life as common
D. find living in space a bit boring and tiring
