GET A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW OF THE WORLD’S MOST ATTRACTIVE FEATHERED ANIMALS WITH THESE BOOKS
Flamingo (火烈鸟)
Biologist and photographer Claudio Contreras Koob spent 20 years travelling deep into the wet lands and forests of his native Mexico—and beyond—to feed his flamingo attraction. This book offers a unique window into the behavior and life of red-feathered birds, with more than 120 show-stopping shots displaying their beauty. teNeues, £35.
Around the World in 80 Birds
Inspiring secrets, national pride or scientific discoveries, every bird has a story to tell, from the weaver bird building multi-nest “apartment blocks” in Namibia to the bar-headed goose taking on a twice-yearly trans-Himalayan journey at an extreme altitude. Mike Unwin’s tour is accompanied by beautiful illustrations from Ryuto Miyake. Laurence King Publishing, £22.
A World on the Wing
Pulitzer-shortlisted Weidensaul, who’s at the forefront of research into bird migration, here tracks some of nature’s most remarkable journeys. He sails through the stormy Bering Sea, encounters trappers in the Mediterranean and visits former headhunters in northeast India, where a bird migration crisis has become a conservation success story. My neighbors across the street take pride in one of the most striking trees in the neighborhood — a towering oak that is over 75 years old. This year, after a wet, warm summer, leaves were a bit different in my Massachusetts town. And through some combination of events, that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day. I arrived at home that afternoon to find our front walkway, driveway and sidewalk completely blanketed.
My son and I had a great time making a leaf pile for jumping and enjoying pillowy fun. The whole time, I was fascinated by the speed of this year’s leaf drop. Even though I was aware that it was an accident of wind patterns that left all the leaves in our yard, I kept looking up and feeling a rush of awe at the suddenly bare branches that watched quietly over our neighborhood, starting its restful season before setting spring leaf buds.
And I felt thankful for those fallen leaves as I was reminded of my favorite quote from the author and naturalist Hal Borland. He wrote it referencing Octobe r, but this year’s later drop had me change the month: “November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations (星座) above them once again.”When I lay in that pile of dry, crisp leaves and looked up into the oak tree across the street, I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.
4. What’s unusual this year?
A.Outdoor activities are limited due to heavy winds.
B.A series of special events happened in the neighborhood.
C.The weather is especially cold in winter in Massachusetts.

A.To express the author’s admiration for the naturalist.
B.To emphasize the importance of getting close to nature.
C.To stress the beauty of the author’s childhood memories.
D.To convey the author’s feelings about the leaf-falling season.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Fall of Massachusetts B.The Beauty of a Newly-bare Tree
C.The Sky Far Beyond D.The Memories of Peace and Beauty
Earth is lighted up by bioluminescence(生物发光)but, for many of us,seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow(光)of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill.
Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms. Observing plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.
A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts.Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.
The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Plant,a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted(嵌入)enzymes(酶) —which are specific to the mushroom —into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight.
This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestin gly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a
plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.
8. How can people quickly identify a decorative flower’s health condition?
A.By monitoring its glow. B.By making it greener.
C.By testing the chemicals in it. D.By putting it in the living room.
9. What can we expect of the adapted glowing plants?
A.They may take the place of lamps. B.They will appear on the market.
C.They can light up a whole living room. D.They glow less bright than previous
efforts.
10. What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?
A.They inserted caffeic acid into it. B.They made it give out brighter light.
C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm. D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco
plants.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants.
B.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage.
C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants.
D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants.
A decade ago, I attended a banquet in Guangzhou where the food was exceptional. The bird’s nest soup, made from chicken and possibly ham with dried scallops (干贝), was gentle and slippery. The sea cucumber was rich and sticky, and the fish was sparklingly fresh and steamed to perfection. However, what stood out was the plain white soup of broth (肉汁), served at the end. It was simple, plain, and perfect.
Ending a banquet with soup may seem odd to Westerners, who are used to sweets at the end of meals. But as an English food writer named Fuchsia Dunlop explains in her book Invitation to a Banquet, soup is a unique expression of a chef’s art, much like a singer’s voice. The transparent, almost invisible soup is an ideal conclusion to a banquet, with its luxury and strong flavors. Invitation to a Banquet is Dunlop’s seventh book. Unlike her other books on Chinese cuisine such as The Food of Sichuan and Revolutionary Kitchen, this one is not a cookbook. Instead, she has chosen 30 dishes from different regions of China to illustrate different aspects of Chinese cuisine and history.
What makes Dunlop’s writing unique is her perspective. She argues that Chinese cuisine is superior (更胜一筹的) not only in taste but also in its ability to incorporate foreign influences while still maintaining its own identity. Furthermore, Dunlop makes an equally compelling case that what Westerners think of as “Chinese food” is neither false nor wrong. It is merely a diasporic (离散的) branch that reflects local t astes and is representative of the cuisine’s diversity. Immigration and adventurousness have made authentic Chinese food more accessible outside China than ever before.
In conclusion, Invitation to a Banquet by Fuchsia Dunlop provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of Chinese cuisine. Through her well-researched book and insightful discussions, she encourages readers to appreciate the complexity and richness of Chinese food.
12. To the author, what is the most memorable dish about the banquet in Guangzhou?
A.A sweet dessert.
B.A bowl of plain white soup.
C.A dish made from expensive ingredients.
D.A fish that was rich and strong-flavoured.
13. What does the underlined word “incorporate” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Include.
B.Reject.
C.Strengthen.
D.Reduce.
14. What is the unique perspective of Chinese cuisine in her book Invitation to a Banquet?
A.Chinese desserts are the highlight of Chinese cuisine.
B.Immigration makes little difference to Chinese dishes.
C.Chinese food is limited to traditional ingredients and flavors.
D.Chinese food is influenced by foreign elements while preserving its own identity.
15. What’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce a dish.
B.To recommend a book.
C.To share an experience.
D.To compare different cultures.
A Great Way to Teach Children to Take Responsibility
As parents, one of the most important things to teach children to take responsibility is to include chores as a part of their daily routine. In order to make a family function smoothly, every member must contribute. Teaching your children to take responsibility at an early age makes it easier for them to shoulder greater responsibilities as they grow older.
16 If your children leave their crayons lying on the table after drawing, picking up those crayons is not a chore. It is cleaning up a mess they have created. 17
18 . For example, if it is to feed the dog every day, make sure the children understand that if they fail in their responsibility, the dog will go hungry.
Make rewards and punishments a part of the lesson. Together decide whether they will be rewarded or not. 19 Some parents make their reward a monetary payment, while others choose to reward with certain privileges, such as extra television viewing time.
Children need to be taught that there are punishments for their actions in case of not doing their assigned chores. Decide and agree from the start what the punishment will be.
Teaching your children the importance of contributing to the family is of great importance. 20 By taking this step, you have done a wonderful thing for your children by providing them with life skills they can take with them into society.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school. Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. But dreaming of the new shoes gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
