Mrs. Riley and I always shout at each other. I shout because she can't hear me, and she because she can’t hear herself. I work for Mrs. Riley. I buy groceries for her at the supermarket, and sometimes I dust and sweep her apartment. The best part, though, is taking care of Sam, Mrs. Riley’s bright yellow parrot, which sings all the time.It is always cheerful. That’s what I'm saving money for.I am going to buy a parrot. And besides a parrot,I have to get a cage and swings and toys and food.
Last Thursday I ran upstairs to Mrs. Riley's. She wasn't in her usual place by the window. She was in bed.She was sick.
“What do you need from the store?" I asked.
“You needn't work for me anymore,”She coughed,"I have to take medicine, and it costs a lot.I can’t pay you."
The next day I ran upstairs. Mrs. Riley was still in bed.
“What do you want from the store?”I asked. Mrs.Riley looked at me for a minute, and then told me what she needed. After I got back, I began dusting around a little,as long as I was there.
Mrs.Riley watched in silence. After a while, she said, “I’ve been thinking, girl since I can't pay you for doing things for me... I’ll-I’LL give you Sam.”
My breath caught in my throat,I couldn’t believe in it.Sam. All mine! Sam looked at me. He chirped,as if to say, “Well?”
I considered it.Someday I'd have enough money to buy a parrot of my own. But Mrs. Riley would never get another one. Plus, if I took Sam, Mrs.Riley would be all alone.Could I take him?
I signed and went over to dust the lamp by the bed.
“I can’t take Sam,” I said, “He belongs to you. And I'll keep working for you. You don’t have to pay me.”This time Mrs. Riley heard me without my shouting. She reached out and patted my arm. “You’r e a good friend, Carla,” Mrs.Riley said.

There is an old story about a king and his daughter. The king asked his daughter how much she loved him. She said that she loved him as much as she loved salt. Her answer upset the king.Salt is a simple thing and it is very common. So the king thought his daughter didn't care about him. But the king was wrong.Salt might be common, but it is very important. Throughout history, salt has caused wars and revolutions. So why do people care so much about salt?
Salt has many uses. Our bodies need salt. If we don't have enough salt, our muscles, nerves and organs can't function properly. We put salt on icy roads to make
them safe.We also use salt to produce other products.Products like plastic, paper, glass, rubber and soap depend on salt. One kind of salt is even an important part of gunpowder(火药).But for many years, salt's most important job was helping store food for a long period of lime.
Like other living things, most bacteria (细菌)that cause food to spoil need water to survive. Salt absorbs (吸收) large amounts of water,so most bacteria cannot live in a salty environment. As a result, salt has the ability to store almost anything. For much of human history, t his has made salt treasured and indispensable- Every ancient culture from Egypt to China depended on salt. Even today, we compare hardworking useful people to salt by calling them "the salt of the earth"
For centuries, salt was also hard to get. The combination of usefulness a nd
r a r it y made it extremely expensive. Since almost everyone needed salt, the salt trade was an important business.Salt could even be used like money. In fact, the word salary comes from the word salt. And valuable people are still described as being "worth their salt". Today, salt is easy to get.It is no longer expensive, but it is still both important and useful.
23. Why did the girl say that she loved her father as much as she loved salt?
A. Because she loved eating salt.
B. Because salt is a common thing.
C. Because her father was a king.
D. Because salt is very important.
24. In P a r a gr a ph 2 w e ca n know t h at
A. we put salt on wet roads to make them safe
B. salt can help our bodies to work properly

A.salt's ability to store things
B.the food that can be stored well

C.In the ancient times, people could even pay with salt.
D.Salt can help us store food for a short period of time.

“B udda(佛)-like youngster s” has become the buzzwords online overnight. What is “B udda-like”?Actually,it has nothing to do with Buddhism. It's only an attitude towards life. It means one should neither be pleased by outside gains nor be saddened by personal losses. Besides, it guides a lifestyle that “it's fine to have something or not.”
The youngsters are in their 20s. Although they haven’t developed themselves into the “God” , they've learned how to live a comfortable life. The green post-90s have mixed feelings to face the unknown future. They think that they are
“B udda-like youngsters” and try to let everything go. They don’t give up; they make some efforts; they take what they are given; they don’t make a change.
We are living at a fast-developing time. If we have a strong sense of competitions, we will be overtaken in grades, education backgrounds, scores, jobs and will be overtaken in our kids grades, education backgrounds, and jobs...
“B udda-like” youngsters keep a casual and calm attitude towards life and get rid of the so-called “fe ar”. It's not that they refuse to make progress but that the pain from efforts overwhelms (压倒) the joy from gain. So, they stop considering struggle (奋斗) as the most important part or even the only aim in life as their parents did. Gradually, “B udda-like” becomes the weapon (武器)for the youngsters to fight against the society that doesn’t belong to them.
In fact, every generation has their own culture. It's hard to tell whether it is good or bad. People born at special time create their own culture. We don’t have to worry about it.
27. The author mainly_ in the first paragraph.
A. expresses his worries about the Budda-like youngstery

28.What is Budda-like youngsters’ attitude about life?
A.They want to find or win anything they want.
B.They
continue regarding struggle as one aim in life. C.They
don’t mind whether they have something or not.
D. They have a strong sense of competitions in many ways.
29. Why do some post-90s become the Budda-like youngsters?
A.Because they want to get the joy form the gain
B.Because
they really refuse to make any progress. C.Because it's their
way to fight against the so-called fear. D.Because they want
to have the same life as their parents’.
30. T h e a u t hor wr ite s t h e la s t p a r a gr a ph t o e xpr e ss t h at
