Task II. Get familiar with the two terms of “Union Jack” and “Norman Conquest” by readin g the following explanations. Try to tell your partners what you know about other terms concerned with the UK.
1. Union Jack
The term “Union Jack” is said to have several origins. The “union” is thought to have e from the bination of the three flags into one and “jack” has for hundreds of years referred to a small flag flown from a boat or ship. The Union Jack should really be called the Union Flag, but Union Flag is not used as often as Union Jack.
The Union Jack flag is the most mon name for the flag of the United Kingdom. The Union Jack has existed since 1606, when England and Scotland were united.
In 1606, the first Union Jack flag was created by bining the English flag (the red cross of Saint George) with the Scottish flag (the diagonal white cross of Saint Andrew on a blue background). Then, in 1801, the addition of Ireland to the United Kingdom added the Irish flag (the red
Saint Patrick’s cross) to the flag.
2. The Norman Conquest
The Norman Conquest of 1066 is perhaps the best-known event in English history. William the Conqueror took away almost all the Saxon rulers’ lands and gave them to his Norman followers. He replaced the weak Saxon rulers with a strong Norman feudal government. Better relations and trade with the Continent followed. The Normans brought French culture, language, manners and buildings with them to England. The Church in England became closer to the Church in Rome, and church courts were separated from civil courts.
