A
I started working with my hands at a young age. The youngest of five brothers, I took on the role as a “maintenance (维修) man” at an early age for our family’s small grocery store. Often my dad wouldn’t give me a clear idea of how something shouldbe done, so I just had to figure it out by researching or through trial and error.
Fast forward to 2016 and those problem-solving skills would become the focus of Tippecanoe High School’s Homebuilding class. I knew I wanted to teach the students skills that went beyond just being able to hammer nails or cut pieces of two-by-fours. The problem was that we didn’t have the resources at the time to do much else. The idea of attracting some type of funding seemed very important. Designing, building and selling a tiny house on wheels seemed like the perfect project to accomplishthe task. I reached out to a number of local businesses and most of them responded with the greatest support for what x k w we were doing.
This year we added a new element to the program. Through one of our partners, we were able to connect with the nonprofit Veteran’s Ananda Incorporated. Students in the Homebuilding class are leading the design and production of micro houses to be donated to this organization. The new partnership gives the students another focus to consider when designing and building the houses.
There has been no shortage of students since our first year. Three years ago we had 41 students, the next 191, and this year it was limited to just over 160 students so we could have a safe and manageable classroom environment. The number of girls taking the class has risen steadily over the last few years as well. This class offers something for everyone and the skills are universal.

I was so worried about handing my little boy over during his first week of school, but you made it easier. You smiled at him like a mother would at her own child. You showed warmth and your hugs were always on offer. After a day in class with you, Charlie would come home singing. Whenever I hear Do Your Ears Hang Low or see him stretching to the sky when singing about the days of the week, I will think of you.I didn't tell you at the time, but I loved your morning song so much that Iimplementedit in my own class (I'm a teacher, too).
When you saw I was troubled, you hugged me with your smile and I knew everything would be OK. You made parents feel as cared for as our children. In the short time I knew you; you taught me about the type of teacher I desire to be. You never seemed disturbed by the mountain of paperwork or impossible work-life balance that comes with the role. Instead, you appeared to embrace every minute.
I can't understand why you've been taken from us. Telling Charlie was one of the hardest things I've had to do.I'm not sure he fully understands, but he told me he loved you and has been asking whether your"robot powers"will work in heaven.
A friend once told me white feathers are angels telling us that loved ones in heaven are well. On the first day collecting the children without you,a white feather floated through the sleet (雨夹雪). Watching the younger ones bounce and gigle as they tried to catch it was beautiful.
I wish I had told you all of this when you were with us.I hope that you knew how you brought happiness to everyone you met and how loved you were. Goodbye, Dear Friend.

A student had to get his long hair cut off in a middle school in GuangDong Province. It was talked a lot among teachers and students.
In fact, all schools have their own rules. In most schools, boy students are not allowed to have long hair while girls are not allowed to dye their hair. And most school rules say that students should wear their school uniforms at school. And students must obey these rules so that they can get healthy development at school.
But some students have disagreements. They think that boy students having long hair doesn't mean that they are not good students. They want to show their own personality. They think that they would look cool too if they had long hair and the hairstyles like their favorite stars.
A girl student thought that she would look much more beautiful if she had brown hair. So she had her dark hair dyed brown one day. When she went back to school the next day, the teacher was very angry with her. She said that she worked hard at her lessons and did well in every subject. She just didn't know why the teacher didn't allow her to dye her hair while women teachers can.
It is not wrong for teenagers to love stars' hairstyles or wear their favorite clothes. However, a school has its own rules for all the students to obey so that the school can be in good order. Students should not break the rules at school.
8. What aren't boy students allowed to do in most middle schools according to this passage?
A. To have long hair.
B. To wear uniforms.
C. To like famous stars.
D. To show their own personalities.
9. Why did the girl make her hair brown?
A. Because she wanted to be cool.
B. Because she thought that she would look much more beautiful.
C. Because she wanted to make her teacher angry.
D Because women teachers dyed their hair.
10. What does the writer think of these school rules?
A. The students should be against them.
B. They are bad for students.
C. They can make schools in good order.
D. They can't make students grow healthily.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Hair styles and clothes.
B. Schoolboys and schoolgirls.
C. Students and famous stars.
D. School rules.

Have you ever been on social media and seen your favorite celebrity talking about a product? These promotions might not be totally random, and are actually seen as a vital part of the marketing process. The question is: How do social media influencers ‘influence’ what you buy?
Human desire for status and making friends, combined with our need to belong to a group, makes us receptive to being ‘socially influenced’. Companies often use that desire to have a similar lifestyle to a celebrity we admire to sell or launch a product. So, what do these promotions actually do?
Firstly, they can be used to build brand awareness. A social media influencer should have a strong understanding of the platform they operate on, and therefore can create appealing content that not only sticks to the brand image, but sparks their followers’ interests in a product they might never have seen before.
Secondly, influencers can improve a company or product’s relationship with their customer base. According to InMoment’s 2018 US Retail CX Trends Report on customer loyalty, 77% of buyers have been brand loyal for more than ten years. This is also true of 60% of millennials. A popular celebrity can target key customers and talk or blog about a product, which can create an instant and lasting bond with them.
Lastly, influencers can improve customer buying habits with seemingly ‘unbiased opinions’. We are more
likely to respond to ‘peer recommendation’ than traditional ads, meaning the fact we see an influencer as a ‘friend’ can make us less likely to be doubtful about what we are seeing.
So, the next time you see a celebrity talking about a product, you might want to consider that this could be a carefully worked-out marketing strategy designed to target your core needs. If you find yourself examining a product you’ve seen on social media, you may well have been influenced.
12. Why do companies invite celebrities to launch products?
A. Because celebrities can improve the companies’ public images.
B. Because consumers like to share similarity with celebrities.
C. Because celebrities want to make more money.
D. Because consumers can make friends with celebrities.
13. According to the passage, which strategy is often used by influencers?
A. Setting up operation platforms.
B. Sending gifts to customers.
C. Improving relationship with the company.
D. Taking advantage of their popularity.
14. To customers, the recommendations of influencers seem to be ________.
A. offensive
B. subjective
C. objective
D. misleading
15. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. how social media make ads
B. how social media influence our lifestyle
C. how social influencers affect our buying
D. how celebrities earn fame

Endangered species
An endangered species is a group of animalsthat could soon become extinct.____16____Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms.____17____Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of animals’ homes and food supplies.
Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing. Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly-valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport.____18____
____19____We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial penalties. The public can help out by refusing to buy any products made from these animals’ body parts. Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal sanctuaries (禁猎区), to protect animals from extinctionby breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild.____20____
A. Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution.
B. Eventually, all the creatures on Earth will enjoy being together.
C. Recent changes, however, have helped to improve the situation.
D. So what can individuals and governments do to protect endangered species?
E. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more.
F. If we all cooperate and take these steps, we will protectthese animals for future generations.
G. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures becoming endangered species, like sharks.
