第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)An image is worth a thousand kilos? Okay, so maybe not a thousand kilos, exactly, but a study shows how a photo diary can keep dieters motivated, making them more likely to achieve their target weight.
Elias Kuzmar Daza, a medical professional from Colombia, studied the motivation levels of patients on weight loss programs at a nutrition clinic.
Different measurements were taken of the patients each week, including body mass index (指标) food and exercise diaries, etc. to record their progress. In addition,
full-body photographs were taken each week, which proved to be very motivating and a key factor in patients completing the full program.
Over the course of the sixteen-week program, a full ninety percent of patients, aged between 16 and 72, saw the treatment through to the end, with seventy percent successfully meeting their weight loss aims. Among those monitored, one measurement proved particularly motivating: waistline.
This finding indicates that the majority of the patients who attended the clinic did so motivated by image, rather than any underlying condition. It should be pointed out that eighty percent of them were female.
Another useful finding of this study was that patients did not necessarily need to attend the clinic in person for the program to be effective. A support line was set up, which patients could call to submit their measurements. They also took and sent their own full-body photographs to the researcher. Fifty percent of patients completed the program in this way.
Summarizing the findings, Kuzmar says: “What patients want is a photo, rather than cold numbers.” These photos serve as visual confirmation that all their hard work is paying off, encouraging them on to further weight loss.
1、What is the purpose of the study?
A.To show losing weight is very easy.
B.To compare several ways to lose weight.
C.To prove the effect of images in weight losing.
D.To see how many people can lose weight successfully.
2、How many patients in the clinic reached their weight-loss goals?
A.50%. B.70%.
C.80%. D.90%.
3、What can give people most motivation when they are trying to lose weight? A.Friends’ encouragement. B.Others’ strong muscles.
C.Their slimmer waistline. D.Their standard blood pressure.
4、What must the patients do to complete the weight-loss program?
A.Go to the clinic every week.
B.Call to submit their measurements.
C.Report to the professional every day.
D.Take full-body photographs each week.
22.(8分)Fitness bands like the Apple Watch and the Fitbit aim to track something like heart rate.
But early models weren’t all that accurate. We thought of them a little bit like random number generators(生成器). They really didn’t seem to be providing anything that bore any relationship to heart rate.
Euan Ashley, a cardiologist(心脏病专家), studies wearables at Stanford University. He and his colleagues have now tested seven newer fitness bands, from brands like Apple, Fitbit and others and he says those heart rate statistics have gotten much better. "Yeah we were pleasantly surprised actually by how good the accuracy of the heart rate monitoring was."
For most of the devices, the error rate was less than 5%, which is good enough for your doctor. But where all the devices failed to measure up was estimating calories burned. Even the most accurate devices were off by 30%, compared to lab measurements of energy consumption. One device was off by more than 90%.
If you think about going to the gym and working out for an hour and maybe that’s around 400 calor ies, then in reality that could be anything from 200 to 800. And that’s a big difference if you’re thinking about somebody who’s incorporating those estimates
into their lifestyle and particular thinking about what to eat that evening based on the workout they did that afternoon.
The results are in the Journal of Personalized Medicine. The reason for the discrepancy, Ashley says, could be that we all burn energy at different rates and that’s hard to calculate from simple input statistics like weight and height.
Some people are incredibly efficient and look incredibly elegant when they run. And others really clearly look like they’re burning a lot more calories to cover the same amount of ground. So if you own a wearable, it’s probably safe to trust the heart data. But what it can’t tell you is whether your time on the treadmill(跑步机) really justifies that chocolate bar.
1、What does Euan Ashley say about the newer models of wearables?
A.They were all useless B.They were hardly effective
C.They were too expensive D.They were mostly accurate
2、What can we learn from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5?
A.For measuring heart rates, most fitness bands are not reliable
B.For measuring calories in exercise, most fitness bands are not reliable
C.We can base our lifestyle and diet on advice from doctors
D.We can base our lifestyle and diet on data from wearables
3、What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To remind readers to use fitness bands wisely
B.To promote the sale of popular wearables
C.To discuss the advantages of some popular wearables
D.To introduce some famous-brand fitness bands
23.(8分)It takes a special person to travel with kids—a parent.Children have their own needs.Their idea of a vacation is more“adventurous”than a parent’s.They need constant inspiration and they can get as tired as they are tiring.
Make sure you have plenty of room while traveling
If you are driving, get a mini-van.Sure,you might be more of a“car”type, and you might have resisted buying a mini—van so far.But pick up a rental van for the vacation just to give the kids a little more room for fighting.
Accommodations along the way can be ually it involves a crowded motel for just long enough to sleep, then back in the crowded car. This is not anybody’s idea of
a home away from home.An accommodation alternative is to camp, but not everyone enjoys a good early morning wake-up wrestle with a bear as much as I do,so a motel might be required.
Make sure you have plenty of room when you“get there”
Assuming you are actually heading for a destination, make sure to have lots of room when you get there. This part is easy. But it requires thinking outside the
box.Forget hotels,motels,and inns.Look for private rental homes.
Probably the biggest destination for families is Walt Disney World in Florida.Good news—Orlando,Kissimmee and the surrounding area is full of private vacation homes for rent.In Florida they call them vacation villas, and they offer all the space of home.
Be prepared for“children being children”events
Sometimes, stress hits you from behind when the unexpected happens.Like a cut or a scrape…or a child getting sick.Sharon Baillie told me that is why she tells all her villa rental guests where the first-aid case can be found, and exactly where to go for medical attention. This is particularly helpful for her many guests from abroad, who are unfamiliar with the US healthcare system.
Booking tickets to theme parks and making reservations for just about everything in advance makes the trip less stressful.Try having your children baby-sat.Hire a local baby-sitter once or twice.Vacation Home owners can set this up for you,and some hotels might be willing to,too.
1、Where does the author prefer to rest on the way to the destination?
A.In a camp. B.In a mini-van. C.At a motel. D.In a car.
2、Wh at does the underlined word“this”in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Booking tickets in advance. B.Hiring a baby-sitter.
C.Making reservations ahead of time. D.Looking for a tour guide.
3、What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce ways of travelling.
B.To advertise vacation homes for tourists.
C.To reduce the stress while traveling abroad.
D.To show how to travel comfortably with kids.
24.(8分)When I moved to Senegal in 2007 to work for a charity organization, the first thing I did was to hit the streets. Dakar, the capital, leans out into warm Atlantic
wind. It has a relaxing atmosphere that makes it a favorite destination.
Not far from the city center, it also has one of Africa’s biggest slums(贫民区)and its share of beggars. Street kids would tail me, begging. During a previous trip to Senegal, I was once cheated by a man. I'd wondered for years whether to give money to beggars in West Africa.
Near my apartment, I passed a group of young men in wheelchairs whom I took to be beggars. Head down, I walked by them quickly. As the months went by, I'd often come across them. I’d often see them at an outdoor basketball court near my office. They’d sit on the ground with their chairs upside down, tightening and adjusting wheels, waiting until the other guys left so they could play.
I'd stay and watch them warm up. They played with speed, rolling down the court as fast as I could run. A few weeks later I introduced myself to them with the help of Mafall, who was one of the guys and could speak a little French. I started spending more time with them and eventually became something like an assistant coach.
The players quickly grew on me. I started referring to them as “my guys” to my colleagues. It was the most fun I’d had since I got to Dakar. Life on the street had made my players strong and they didn’t back down easily. I was proud of them.
Toward the end of the season, Mafall invited me to where he lived—found many of the players there, with their wives and children. I learned that most of them were born with disabilities. As Mafall and I chatted, I knew something had changed. They were no longer beggars. They were basketball players, my guys, and my friends.
1、It can be inferred from the text that the disabled young men ________.
A.used to beg in the streets B.often helped the local charity.
C.were not friendly toward foreigners D.played basketball as well as normal guys.
2、Why did the writer walk by the young men with head down?
A.To be afraid of being recognized by them.
B.To prevent himself from being stolen.
C.To be afraid of being cheated by them.
D.To be careful enough to find his way home.
3、Why did the author call the disabled young men “my guys”?
A.They often played tricks on the author.
B.They were loved by the author.
C.They used to cheat others when begging.
D.They always quarreled while training.
4、What is the whole text mainly about?
A.The author refused to be cheated by beggars in Dakar.
B.The author helped the locals in Senegal out of poverty.
C.The author coached the young men in Senegal to play basketbal1.
D.The author helped to change some disabled young men in Dakar.

Dear Li Hua,
The summer vacation approaching, I’m writing to recommend you to read a novel by Mary Shelley——Frankenstein.
It’s generally agreed that it is one of the best science fiction stories ever written and some films on it have been made. Its plot is as follows: A young scientist, Frankenstein, discovers the secret of how to create life while studying at university. Using bones from dead bodies, he creates a creature that resembles a human being and gives it life. The creature, which is very large and strong and is also extremely ugly, terrifies anyone who sees it. Shockingly, the monster murders the scientist’s brother and wife. Finally, the scientist dies and the monster ends his own life, too.
If you are interested, read the details in the coming summer holidays!
Yours,
Leslie

Good morning, everyone! I feel honored to share the benefits of writing poetry with you. As we all know, most people have tried writing poetry at some time, for example, at school. For children, it is a good way to explore language and have fun with words as well as to express themselves.
What deserves mentioning is that writing poetry can be a form of therapy. Writing poetry can help people deal with changes in their lives, death or feelings of sadness, drug or alcohol problems or serious illness. With smart phones functioning more and more powerfully, they are occupying more and more time in people’s daily life. As can be seen everywhere, “screen slaves” are glued to their smart phones while eating, walking, riding, attending a meeting, and even while crossing roads.
What can account for the special phenomenon? First, smart phones can provide enough convenience for us. For example, they can help us communicate more easily and know more about the outside world. Besides, many young people are crazy about playing games on smart phones.
