Every morning on the way to school, I see the same people I always see: the old lady
walk ing the dog, the man at the n ewssta nd, the skipp ing twins on their way to the bus
stop. I don ' t know an y of their names. In a strange way, I consider them as my frien ds.
Every day, I smile at them, and they smile at me. At school, I like
all the subject
s as
comfortable as being at home.
Today at breakfast my parents announce that we're going to move because my father has gotten a promotion(升职). On my way to school I look at everything as if seeing
it for the first time. The old lady waves at me; her dog wags its tail and gives a tiny bark. The man at the newsstand greets me. The skipping twins run past me to the bus stop. I feel like a different person, a stranger. For the first time ever, my school day is not comfortable. Going home from this day is a relief (宽慰).
Every day, my parents tell me something about the town that will become our new
home. There is a statue honoring heroes, an annual strawberry festival and the mayor
used to be a pro-football player. There are oak trees in our new neighborhood, just like the one in our yard.
On the day before we move, I walk in the same direction as I would if I were going to school. When I see the old lady, I tell her good-bye. The man at the newsstand shakes my hand, too. The twins wave as they board the bus. I walk home slowly. The moves are carrying boxes while my parents are loading suitcases into our car. Soon our house will be empty. But not for long; I know that somewhere there are parents telling their children about a town filled with oak trees, a place where you can get the best milkshake in the world, a place where, if you ' re lucky, you might see the
same people everyday.

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged from13~19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S.
schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months' study the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected -much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his
idea. “I suppose I should criticize ( 批评) American schools, ” he said. “It is far
too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe
your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two."
28. The whole exchange program is mainly to ______ .
A. help teenagers in other countries know the real America
B. send students in America to travel in Germany
C. let students learn something about other countries
D. have teenagers learn new languages
29. What did Fred and Mike agree on?
A. America has better traffic.
B. German schools were harder than American schools.
C. Americans and Germans were both friendly
D. There were more cars on the streets in America.
30. What is particular in American schools?
A. There is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings.
B. There are a lot of after-school activities.
C. Students usually take 14 subjects in all.
D. Students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car
31. What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life?
A. A better education should include something good from both America and Germany.
B. German schools trained students to be better citizens
C. American schools were not as good as German schools.
D. The easy life in the American school was more helpful to students.
D
Throughout history, most humans have tended to settle and live in the place where they were born. But there have always been people who move from place to place, usually in search of a new start or better life. Early hunters walked over mountain ranges
to follow animal herds, ancient sailors built boats to bring their tribes to faraway
islands, and farmers in overcrowded lands went looking for open space and fertile soil on the other side of the globe. When we talk about these long-ago movements of people, we call it migration(移民).
The modern world's a little different, with strict borders(边界) between countries. But people still move from one country to another motivated by hopes and dreams, and now we call this immigration. The fact is, if you live in the United States and are not completely Native American, you or someone in your family is (or was) an immigrant. It's why you have the life you have now, in the place you have it.
Carly, 13, writes, "My great grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Poland in 1916. That's all they spoke, so my grandmother knew Polish. I think it's really cool. I'm proud of where I come from! ”
Immigration has always been a large part of America's national identity, and now many other countries are also becoming popular destinations for immigrants. In some ways, moving to a new land has never been easier. We have airliners and railways and highways to zip people around with amazing speed. But in many other ways, immigrating is more difficult and more complicated than ever before -- not just when it comes to laws and procedures, but also with family and social issues(问题) tied to it.
For many families, immigration is still happening right now. There ' s probably
a teen in your school or community who' s dealing with immigration -related struggles at this very moment! Comprehending those struggles can help us connect with people and understand or own family history.
32. Why do some people most probably tend to move to another country?
A . To make their children 's immigration easier.
B. To get over strict borders between countries.
C. To become native American as early as possible.
D. To realize their dreams and complete their hopes.
33. What can we learn from Carly?
A. She thinks her family has benefited much from her immigration.
B. She takes pride in her family ' s immigration experience.
C. She doesn ' t think America ' s weather agrees with her.
38
D. She doesn' t like the small country of Poland.
34. It is more difficult for people to move to a new country because _________ .
A. immigrants themselves find it difficult to find a job
B. immigrants ' own countries forbid them to move out
C. the coun tries to be immigrated in forbid anyone to come here
D. both the immigrating country and the person have many obstacles
35. How should you get on with those immigrants to your country?
A. Advise them to give up the idea of immigrat ing in future.
B. Make a survey of the immigratio n-related problems.
C. Un dersta nd their difficulty living in a new place.
D. Un dersta nd your own family history first.
