Structure analysis of the text (2): stylistic features • This text is a piece of narration, which is reasonably orgainized—with a begining, a body and an end.

• A large part of narration is devoted to describing how passangers on the plane, including the suthor herself, behaved when the plane was hit by lightening and when it finally landed safely. Try to find in the narration some specific descriptions of the reaction and behaviour of the following people.

• It is not always just to tell the reader what happened; more often than not, it sends a message to the reader, which, in some cases, is implied, and in others explicitely stated.

Paragraphs Main idea The author tells us about the setting and the unexpected happening, and introduces some main characters including the writer. This part narrates and delineates the feelings, thoughts, and actions of the writer and other passengers on the plane when they were faced with the dangerous situation.

• The writer intends to tell us about her unusual, unforgetable travel experience in order to eulogize her fellow passengers, praise their fine deeds and inspire others to copy them.

Structural Analysis
• Part I (para. 1—4) Setting and characters 背景和人物 Our plane was unexpectedly struck by lightning, and the worried passengers were informed about an emergency landing. Part II (para. 5—9) Climax 达到高潮 Throughout the emergency landing, “I” was proud of the passengers’ perfect self-control in the crisis and their efforts to comfort one another. Part III (para. 10—12) Falling action 情节转弱 After the safe landing, “I” felt relieved and was deeply touched by “my” fellow passengers’ kind deeds while waiting for alternative flights.



Part IV (para. 13—14) Resolution 尾声 “My” adventurous plane trip taught me that what is most important is not to pay back kindness to a specific fellow passenger but to pass it on at large.
