I was born in Mississippi, America in the 1960s. When I was a five-year-old boy, I was badly ill and became disabled. I grew up knowing I was different. The first time I felt hurt and left out was in Grade Five. The other fourth and fifth graders played together in gym class, while I was put in the second grade gym class. Mom called the school to say it was unfair, but the school scolded me for complaining too much.
In the 1980s, when my mom was giving birth to my sister, she died. My dad became even more distant. I was very sad and began drinking wine to ease the pain.
Dad got remarried in 1985. Everyone went to his wedding except me. He told me to stay at home and watch the house. When my high school ball came around, I wanted to go out but wasn’t allowed. When I graduated, my dad and step-mom weren’t willing to hold a party for me. They put me into a group home after graduation.
However, my life changed when I became a local leader of the National Self-advocacy (自我辩护) Group. At first, I thought the group wasn’t for me until I found out it was all about empowerment (授权)! My goal is to be the voice for people who haven’t been heard and to help them. Many families, like mine, don’t believe their disabled famil y members have a voice of their own.
Looking back over my 16 ye ars of leadership experience, I’m proud that I’ve helped so many disabled people. They should be encouraged to never give up and to follow their own way.

After spending years searching for a planet with life, scientists may have found one. In September 2010, a team of US scientists
discovered an Earth-sized planet called Gliese 581g. It has
a surface temperature neither too hot nor too cold for
liquid(液态)water. Scientists think there is a chance that
the planet could have life.
The planet Gliese 581g goes around a star called Gliese 581, and gets the name Gliese 581g, which is about 20 light-years from Earth. That is about 194 trillion(万亿)kilometers -500 million times farther away from us than the moon.
A spacecraft traveling at a one-tenth of the speed of light would reach Gliese 581g within about 220 years. A human can’t live that long, but robotic explorers could make the job easier. However, our fastest spacecraft don’t come anywhere near that one-tenth light-speed mark.
At present, scientists don’t know what the surface might be like on Gliese 581g. What they know is that the planet is at the right distance from its star to have liquid water. It’s also at the right distance to have an atmosphe re that could protect the water if it is on the surface.
Although spacecraft won’t be getting there anytime soon, one way to look for life on Gliese 581g is to turn our radio telescopes(望远镜)towards the planet and search for radiation(放射). By studying the radiation, scientists would find out about the chemicals(化学物质)around the planet and discover if Gliese
581g has an atmosphere(气体). If it has one, studying the atmosphere would give us a good idea whether the planet has life or not. But it’ll probably be man y years before we can do this properly.
People have been arguing about whether there is alien life on Gliese 581g. Any discussion about alien life is just guessing at this point, according to its discoverers.
26. Scientists may have found a planet with life because_________.
A. the planet is Earth-sized
B. the planet may have water
C. the planet has a surface temperature
D. the temperature is not high
27. Gliese 581g ________according to the passage.
A. goes around its star Gliese 581
B. goes around the earth
C. is almost as far as the moon from us
D. is a little father from us than the moon
28. Scientists know_________ according to Paragraph 4.
A. Gliese 581g has liquid water on its surface
B. Gliese 581g has an atmosphere to protect water
C. what the surface of Gliese 581g might be like
D. Gliese 581g has the right situation to have water
29. The passage tells us mainly about ________ on Gliese 581g in Paragraph 5.
A. the study of atmosphere
B. the study of the radiation
C. the way of looking for life
D. the discovery of chemicals
30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Gliese 581g, a Likely Living Planet.
