第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
A Lifelong Devotion to Keeping People Fed
Yuan Longping is a Chinese agricultural scientist and educator, known for developing the hybrid rice varieties.
Yuan graduated from the Southwest Agriculture Institute in 1953 andbegan his teaching career at an agriculture school.
In the 1960s, when a serious food shortage sweptChina, Yuan decided to devote himself to studying how to increase the yields of rice. He then began a lifelong connection with rice.
Yuan succeeded in growing the world’s first high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in 1973, which could reach a yield of over 500 kg per mu (about 0.067 hectares), rising from the previous yield of only 300 kg per mu. For the next four decades, he continued to work on research and development of hybrid rice, achieving increasingly higher outputs. In 2020, hybrid rice developed by Yuan’s team achieved 1,500 kilograms per mu in two growing seasons, a new world record.
InChina, where rice is the main food for the majority of the 1.4 billion people, the planting area of hybrid rice has reached 16 million hectares, or 57 % of the total planting area of rice, helping feed an extra 80 million people a year.
Hybrid rice has also been grown in over 40 countries, including theU.S.,Brazil,India,Vietnam, thePhilippinesandMadagascar. The total planting area of the hybrid rice has reached 8 million hectares overseas.
Even after a great success, Yuan never held himself back from making new breakthroughs. In 2017, his team started to grow seawater rice inQingdao. The rice was designed to grow in saline-alkaline land and survive even after being completely in seawater. His team planned to develop a type of seawater rice that could be planted in 6.67 million hectares of saline-alkaline land acrossChinato boost the country’s rice harvest by about 20 %. In 2018, Yuan’s team was invited to plant the saline-alkaline tolerant rice in experimental fields inDubai, which achieved huge success. In June 2020, his team started to grow seawater rice on a farm at an altitude of 2,800 meters in northwestChina’sQinghaiProvince. The experiment succeeded.
Yuan had two dreams — to “enjoy the cool under the rice crops taller than men” and that hybrid rice could be grown all over the world to help solve the global food shortage.
1. What made Yuan Longping decide to study rice?
A. A serious food shortage.
B. Agriculture development.
C. His interest in the rice experiment.

D. grew the first high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in 1953
3. We can infer from the passage that Yuan Longping’s most outstanding qualities are________.
A. modest and outgoing
B. honest and creative
C. generous and optimistic
D. responsible and devoted

Watching what you eat can be easier said than done, but a recent study shows it might not just be about what's on your plate — it could be about how quickly it disappears.
Japanese researchers followed 1,083 adultsfor five years, splitting them into three categories based on how quickly they ate: slow, normal, and fast. They also answered a questionnaire at the beginning of the study, sharing their diet, physical activity, and medical history. In the beginning, none of the volunteers had metabolic syndrome (新陈代谢综合征) - meaning at least three risk factors — which can lead to health problems like heart conditions and diabetes.
When the participants reported back five years later 84 had been diagnosed (诊断) with metabolic syndrome — and their eating speed was a major predictor, according to the results in the journal Circulation. The fast eaters were 89 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome than slow and normal eaters. Just 2.3 percent of slow eaters received the diagnosis, compared to 11.6 percent of fast eaters. But that's not all. Fast eaters also saw more weight gain, larger waistlines, and higher blood sugar levels than slow eaters.
The researchers saygobblingmakes it easier not to take notice of fullness before your body has a chance to signal you to stop. “So when people eat fast they are more likely to overeat,” said Takayuki Yamaji, MD, study author and cardiologist at Hiroshima University in Japan in a statement.
Previous research backs up the weight benefits of slow eating, too. One study of New Zealand women found fast eaters have higher body-mass indexes (指数), and a Chinese study found that both healthy and fat men ate less when told to chew 40 times instead of 15 times before swallowing. Initial research even suggests chewing your
food longer could bum more calories - up to about 1,000 extra every month.
4. What are the participants divided by?
A. Medical history.
B. Health condition.
C. Physical activity.
D. Eating speed.
5. Which may be the result of the study?
A. Fast eaters are 4 times more likely to have metabolic syndrome.
B. Normal and slow eaters don’t have metabolic illness.
C. 89% of fast eaters have higher blood pressure.
D. Slow caters are healthier than fast eaters.
6. What does the underlined word “gobbling” in Paragraph 4 best mean?
A. Tasting slowly.
B. Digesting quickly.
C. Eating greedily.
D. Cooking carefully.
7. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. The importance of eating speed.
B. The advantage of eating slowly.
C. The result of a Chinese study.
D. Fast eating and overeating.
C
A new study suggests drinking coffee as soon as someone wakes up from a poor night’s sleep greatly affects metabolism(新陈代谢) and blood sugar control.
In the study, published in theBritish Journal of Nutrition, UK researchers let 29 healthy men and women take part in three different overnight experiments. In the first two scenes, participants were given a sugary drink uponwaking—first from a normal night’s sleep, and then again after a poor night’s sleep during which they were woken up for five minutes every hour. In the third, their sleep was similarly disrupted, but they were given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
Blood samples from participants were taken following the sugary drink, which mirrored the calories of a typical breakfast, in each experiment. Results showed that one night of disrupted sleep did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar responses at breakfast when compared to a normal night of sleep. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast increased the blood sugar response by around 50 percent.
By drinking such kind of drink after breakfast, UK researchers found that our bodies’ ability to break down our food healthily is completely improved. Examining the effects of broken sleep and morning coffee across a range of different metabolic markers, scientists at the University of Bath found that, while one night of poor sleep had a
limited effect on metabolism, drinking coffee before breakfast could have a negative effect on blood sugar control.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee—the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee is. This simple study is important and has far-reaching health influences, and it indeed moves some coffee drinkers’ heartstrings. As up to now we have had limited knowledge about what this is doing to our bodies, in particular for our metabolic and blood sugar control, so we have a long way to go.” said Professor James Betts, co-director of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism at the University of Bath.
8. How did UK researchers get the result of the experiment?
A. By making comparisons.
B. By consulting journals.
C. By questionnaire.
D. By assumption.
9. What can we learn from the experiment?
A. One night of poor sleep surely affects blood sugar.
B. Drinking coffee after breakfast does harm to health.
C. Having strong drinks has a good effect on metabolism.
D. Drinking coffee at different time has different effects on health.
10. What does James Betts think of the study?
A. It makes no sense.
B. It remains to be continued.
C. It is limited and blind.
D. It is particular and explicit.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How Much Coffee to Drink Matters
B. Does Coffee Really Wake Up an Appetite?
C. How Does Drinking Coffee Affect One’s Sleep?
D. Drinking Coffee before Breakfast Harms Metabolism
D
As is commonly known,Antarcticais an icy continent with extreme environment. However, a new study provides evidence that the area had a rainforest in the past.
The researchers collected a piece of Earth sediment from under the seafloor off the coast ofAntarctica. In the sediment, they discovered forest material that was estimated to be about 90 million years old. At that period, dinosaurs were the ruler animals of the land.
Johann Klages, a German geologist, was the lead writer of a study on the findings, published in the
journalNature. He said the sediment was collected from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor. Klages said an examination showed that the material didn’t form in the ocean.
The researchers estimate that the area — about 900 kilometers from the South Pole — had average yearly temperatures of about12°Cto13°C. The soil included fine dirt particles and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Although no animal remains were found, Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment.
The research represents new evidence of the major climate changes Earth experienced in the past — and is currently undergoing today. The soil in the sediment dates back to the planet’s warmest period of the past 140 million years, with sea level about 170 meters higher than today. The researchers said that the rainforest environment inAntarcticawas especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life. Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.
12. What can we learn about the sediment collected?
A. It formed in the age of dinosaurs.
B. It was found on theAntarcticaland.
C. Ancient forest material was found in it.
D. Some dinosaur remains were found in it.
13. How did the researchers reach their findings?
A. By analyzing the Earth sediment.
B. By exploring ice inAntarctica.
C. By collecting data on climate.
D. By researching special plants.
14. What can be indicated in the last paragraph?
A. Seasonal snowfall made the forest disappear.
B. Antarctica was much colder 140 million years ago.
C. Antarctica’s natural environment has changed greatly.
D. Polar nights inAntarcticaare getting shorter than before.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Rainforest disappeared fromAntarctica.
B. Antarctica had a different history of climate.
C. Researchers studied a piece of Earth sediment ofAntarctica.
D.Antarcticahad an extreme environment containing ice and snow.
