第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
A recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 36 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility (能见度) of yellow makes it less difficult for drivers to avoid getting into accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate.
The study was led by Prof Ho. To test whether there was a relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analysed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 6.1 fewer accidents per 1 ,000 taxis per month.
They also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 16,700 taxis in a ratio (比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 76.6 fewer accidents will occur per month or 917 fewer accidents per year.
Assuming an average repair cost of $1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual saving of $2 million.
“We are eager to continue to validate (证实)the findings of our study by looking at the use of
yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For example, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against those of other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we’ re also interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicle s that are of different colors”explained Prof Ho.
21. What do Prof Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest?
A. School buses should be painted yellow.
B. Their study will be furthered.
C. Their findings are worth popularizing.
D. Yellow should be widely used in public transport.
22. What’ s Prof Ho’s study based on?
A. Physical risks taxi passengers experience.
B. The economic effect of changing taxi color.
C. Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide.
D. Data from Singapore’s largest taxi company.
23. Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents?
A. Because yellow signals a warning of danger.
B. Because yellow can be seen more easily.
C. Because drivers tend to he more careful in yellow taxis.
D. Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings.
24.What can be the best title for the text?
A. Safer to Ride in Yellow Taxis.
B. Caution: Yellow Taxis ahead.
C. Why Are Yellow Taxis Preferred?
D. How Can Colors Help Prevent Accidents?
B
B vitamins(维生素)may offer some protection against the effect of air pollution, a new study suggests.
The scientists say the effect is real but stress the limitations of their work. Follow-up studies are urgently needed, they say, in heavily polluted cities like Mexico.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 90% of the world’s population live in heavily-polluted areas. One of the pollutants that is considered the most dangerous is particulate matter, referred to as PM2.5. At around 1/30 the width of a human hair, PM2.5 can go deep into the human lung and contribute to lung and heart health problems in the young and old. Scientists have long suspected that PM2.5 causes what are termed epigenetic(表观遗传)changes in our cells that can damage our health. Now in this new human trial, an international team of scientists wanted to see if exposure to concentrations of PM2.5 could be mitigated by daily B vitamins.
Ten volunteers were tested initially exposed to clean air and their basic responses were measured. The same volunteers were later tested with large doses(剂量)of B vitamins while exposed to air containing high levels of PM2.5. The researchers found that a four-week B vitamin intake limited the PM2.5 effect by between 28-76% at ten gene locations. They found a similar reduction in effect on the mitochondrial DNA, the parts of cells that produce energy. However, the researchers caution that their study, while observing a real effect, has limitations. As well as the small number of participants, there was little information on the size of the B vitamin dose that caused the response.
25. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Exposure to PM2.5 is more and more serious.
B. PM2.5 can lead to epigenetic changes.
C. Further studies should be done on PM2.5.
D. B vitamins may fight against PM2.5.
26. How many limitations does the text mention about the new study?
A. 2.
B. 3.
C. 4.
D. 5.
27. Which can replace the underlined word "mitigated" in Paragraph 4?
A. measured
B. ignored
C. reduced
D. observed
28. How does the writer of the text like the new study?
A. He believes it deeply.
B. He criticizes it strongly.
C. He thinks it needs testing again.
D. He shows no opinion about it.
C
In James Cameron’s fantasy films, such as Avatar and The Abyss, the unexplored is decorated in color and filled with alien danger. But on his dive to the deepest place on Earth, which took place on a Sunday last month, reality proved far different: white, deserted, and dull.
“I felt like I literally had gone to another planet and come back,” Cameron said after returning from the cold, dark place in the western Pacific Ocean, nearly 7 miles (11km) below the surface. “It was a very fantastic day.” Cameron is the first person to explore the deepest valley in the ocean since two men made a 20-minute trip there in 1960.
He spent about three hours gliding (滑行) through the icy darkness, brightened only by lights on the one-man sub (潜水艇). This deepest section of the Mariana Trench is so untouched that at first it appeared dull. But there’s something strangely interesting about the first pieces of video that Cameron shot — a sense of aloneness.
“It’s really the sense of isolation (孤立,隔离), realizing how tiny you are down in this big, black and unexplored place,” the Titanic director said. The wordless minute-long video, released by sponsor National Geographic, shows Cameron’s sub gliding across what he calls “the very soft, almost gelatinous (胶状的) flat plain.”
To Cameron, the main thing was to appreciate being there. “There had to be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in, and said, ‘This is where I am; I’m at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth. What does that mean?’” Cameron told reporters during a conference call. The trip was only about half as long as planned because Cameron’s battery ran low. He said he would return and film it in 3D for later viewing.
“I see this as the beginning,” Cameron said. “It’s not a one-time deal and then moving on. This is the beginning of opening up this new frontier.”
29. Why did Cameron dive to the deepest place on Earth?
A. To study ocean creatures in the deepest valley.
B. To prove his strong will and perseverance.
C. To get support from National Geographic.
D. To open up a new frontier.
30. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Cameron’s fantasy film, Avatar was inspired by hi s dive to the deepest place on Earth.
B. Cameron glided through the icy darkness alone by lights of the one-man sub.
C. Cameron didn’t stay at the bottom of the ocean as planned because he was worn out.
D. Cameron felt bored when he went to the deepest valley in the ocean.
31. The underlined sentence in the passage means that ______.
A. he appreciated and took pride in being at the bottom of the ocean
B. he was disappointed because the trip was only about half as long as planned
C. Cameron wanted to show the public he had been to the deepest place on Earth
D. he wouldn’t stop exploring the deepest place in the future
32. According to the passage, which of the following words best describes Cameron?
A. Generous.
B. Diligent.
C. Self-centered.
D. Adventurous.

How to Live Peacefully with Your Parents?
As a teen, you are going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding. 36
Here is the challenge: kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in the world. These conflicts(冲突)can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm house. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.
For example, try to find time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, or hungry. A good
time to talk is when you are all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop it. 37 Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you are listening. 38 Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each other’s feeling can disagree without getting things ugly.
39 How do you build trust? Trust, comes by actually doing what you say you are going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometime we forget that parents are more than rule makers — they’re interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping — just like their teenagers!
What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 40 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the ones who can change theirs.
A. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.
B. You may consider seeking outside help.
C. And then you will be able to accept what your parents say.
D. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you are not on the same page.
E. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.
F. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your
parents believe in you.
G. Faced with this challenge, children don’t know what to do.
