The little old man walked right up to the cash register (收银台), placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal. The little old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. Then he carefully counted out the French fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them.
As the man began to eat his few bites of hamburger the crowd began to get restless. Again you could tel l what they were thinking, “That poor old couple. All they can afford is one meal for the two of them.”

Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy them something to eat. This time the lady explained that, no, they were used to sharing everything together.
As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly with a napkin the young man could stand it no longer. Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food.

Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end.
The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-bye to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed proper. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.
Bradford said that large modem theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location (位置)was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”
Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were given up because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which
plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located.
The theater audience said good-bye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater has shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.

C. The audience requested it.
D. The theater owner found it suitable.

A. It will b& repaired.
B. It will be turned into a museum.
C. It will be knocked down.
D. It will be sold to the city government.
31. What can we infer about the audience?
A. They are disappointed with Bradford.
B. They are sad to say goodbye to the old theater.
C. They are supportive of the city officials.
D. They are keen to have a shopping center.

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who eat rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed (挤进) between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author o f French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of (尽管) all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity (肥胖)—or extreme overweight —among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young refuse older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% —and is growing.
32. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?
A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.
B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.
C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles.
D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.
33. This text is mainly the relationship between .
A. Americans and the French

D. fast food and overweight
34. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By comparison
B. By space
C. By time
D. By importance
35. Where does this text probably come from?

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Smith,
Thank you for your offer to host our student Chen Wei. Here is some detailed information about him.
Open-minded and optimistic, Chen Wei is very friendly and gets on well with others. He loves sports, especially basketball and football and he is keen on reading and listening to music as well. As it’s his first trip to the UK, he feels a little nervous. Having trouble adapting to British food, he is more concerned about whether he is able to communicate clearly with others. At the same time, Chen Wei is really looking forward to learning more about the history and culture of the UK, making some new friends and improving his English.
Thank you for your generosity once again.
Yours Sincerely
Li Hua。
