A majority of Australians welcome immigrants. So why then do opinion polls of young and old voters alike across the political divide, now find majority support for reducing Australia's immigration? Obviously, the Australian government it's time to curb immigration. There are three main reasons:
1.Opposition from local residents
Local residents underestimated the prejudice of Australian immigrants, and the problem of racial discrimination is increasing. Australia is a multicultural country with immigrants of different races. Due to differences in living habits and culture, immigrants and local residents will inevitably conflict. In addition, the arrival of immigrants has made the living space of local residents become smaller and smaller, and the contradictions between them have become bigger and bigger.
2.Excessive immigration has led to a lack of urban infrastructure
More than 200,000 people settle in Australia every year, most of whom live in the major cities of Sydney and Melbourne. This is equivalent to a larger area of Canberra or Newcastle.
Unlike the United States, most economic opportunities are concentrated in a few major cities along the coast. Coupled with the failure of successive state and federal governments to build infrastructure, they were unable to invest in services needed to meet the record population growth brought by immigration. Failure to reallocate land to provide adequate land means that schools are becoming crowded, real estate prices are too high, commuting times are getting longer and longer, the pressure is increasing, and roads are severely congested.
Today, infrastructure is under construction, and land is finally redistributed to accommodate the higher population density and more housing stock in the outer suburbs.
But these problems should have been solved ten years ago, and if the current number of immigrants continues to grow in the next few years, they will become increasingly impossible to implement effectively enough to catch up with the problems that need to be solved. Newspapers are flooded with relevant The story of the lagging light rail and highway connection project.
3.Foreign workers are taking jobs away from locals
Bringing foreign workers to Australia to fill the country’s so-called skills gap, leaving local graduates losing their competitive advantage. These foreign workers can easily find jobs in their fields and eventually take up whatever jobs they can get. Locals began to complain Immigrants, blame the immigrants for taking their jobs.
At the same time, you will find two different articles in the same week. An industry group warned against reducing skilled immigration due to shortages in STEM fields. Another report stated that Australian STEM graduates are struggling to find jobs in their fields.
With a ready supply of experienced foreign workers, why should employers invest resources to train local graduates? If the funding of the university does not depend on the result of hiring ability, what incentives must the university take to fill this gap?
It is difficult for the government to make the right decision. They want to make full use of the benefits of immigration to the country, but they rely on skilled immigration.Another concern is the shortage of talents. About 90% of locals agree that Australia should "train our own technical talents instead of importing them from other countries."
