Although the 2008 US presidential elections are still a long way off, candidates are already getting ready for the campaigns ahead.
For the Democrats, the two leading candidates are a surprising pair. The first is Hillary Clinton, 60, the wife of former President Bill Clinton. The second is Barack Obama, 45, a Harvard educated senator(参议员).
It is the first time that the leading presidential candidates for a political party are either a woman or black. The dynamic pair has certainly gotten people’s attention.
But the question remains, is America ready for either one?
It’s not a simple question to answer. For the past 220 years, Americans have elect ed only white males to the nation’s highest office. That can hardly be called a tradition of diversity. However, many people believe that 2008 will be the year that this changes.
“The white men that have been running the country recently have done such a b ad job, at home and abroad,” said Dorian Cool of San Francisco, California.
The polling numbers seem to back up his opinion: 86 percent of Americans say they would vote for a qualified woman. An impressive 93 percent say they would vote for a black man if he seemed right for the job. These numbers are much higher than they were just 20 years ago. They may suggest that Americans are ready to be led by a different type of person.
Still, there is a lot to overcome. Although women represent 51 percent of the American population, there are only nine female governors out of 50. Out of 100 senators, only 16 are women. The numbers are significantly lower for blacks in office.
Since the American Civil War, only two blacks have been elected governor and only three have been elected to the Senate.
Surely both candidates face difficult odds, but never before has there been so much support for either a female or a black candidate.
As Barack Obma himself said, “There is not a black America and a white America, a Latino America and an Asian America—there’s the United States of America.” If others share his vision, maybe the United States will end up with a new type of leader.
56. The author considers Hillary and Barack “a surprising pair” because they are ________.

D. either the wife of former president or a Harvard educated senator

One kilogram—that was all it took to crown the world’s strongest man.
German weightlifter Matthias Steiner pulled ahead of Russian rival Evgeny Chigishev to win the Olympic men’s 105 kg weightlifting gold medal on Tuesday.
Steiner lifted a total of 461 kg, 203 kg in the snatch(抓举) and 258 kg in the clean and jerk(挺举), to beat Chigishev by a single kilogram. The German won the battle of giants in his last lift,
winning his country’s first gold medal in the event at this year’s Games.
Steiner’s winning lift was also the last effort of the sport for this Olympics at which China earned eight of the 15 golds.
Steiner was born in Austria and represented his country of birth at the Athens Olympics four years ago, placing seventh in the lower 105 kg category, but had a falling out with Austria’s weightlifting federation afterwards.
He applied for German citizenship in 2005 and got married, but his career went into deep freeze as he could not compete without a passport. He finally obtained the document last January.
The German, who turns 26 on Monday, had come to these Games on a mission(使命) to win the title for his wife Susann, who died in a car accident in July last year. The German team said he used the personal tragedy to motivate himself to win the gold medal.
Chigishev was the strongest in the snatch session Tuesday. He kissed his fists after a 210-kg lift that gave him a 7-kg advantage over fourth –placed Steiner going into the second event—the clean and jerk. He lit out a victorious roar(吼叫) after clearing 250 kg in his last lift, but the glory was short-lived as Steiner stunned(使瞠目) everyone with his final, winning clean and jerk effort.
Steiner had finished seventh in the 2004 Olympics in the 105 kg weight category, and took the gold in the 2008 European Championship + 105 kg snatch competition, bronze in the clean and jerk and silver overall, with a total weight of 446 kg.
World champion Victors Scerbatihs of Latvia settled for bronze.

B. 461 kg

Babies suffering from kidney stones(肾结石) receive medical treatment at the No.1 Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Lanzhou, Northwest China’s Gansu Province, September 11, 2008.
The Sanlu Group, o ne of the country’s largest dairy products’ makers, recalled about 700 tons of its baby milk food as one of the infants diagnosed with kidney stones after being fed the food died in Gansu Province. The company said its milk food had been affected with a chemical called melamine(三聚氰胺) .The announcement came after the company conducted an internal
investigation.
A Gansu provincial health department spokesman said that altogether 59 infants have been diagnosed with kidney stones in the province so far. Reports said many of them had been fed the same brand of milk food. No infants were diagnosed with kidney stones last year or in 2006 in the province.
Health experts said there is a link between melamine and kidney stones.
The first case was reported by the People’s Liberation Army No.1 Hospital in Gansu’s provincial capital of Lanzhou on June 28.
Similar cases have been reported from across the country—from the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Gansu and Shanxi to Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui and Hunan Provinces. But the total number of cases is not known.
Samples of the milk food were tested in a State-run laboratory, the country’s food a nd drugs watchdog said. The Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine(AQSIQ) launched a research.
Sanlu Group, based in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, is partly owned by New Zealand dairy export giant Fonterra Cooperative Group.
Kidney stones are small, solid masses that form when salt or minerals normally found in urine crystallize(尿结晶) inside the kidney. They can move out of the kidney if they become too big and cause infection, and even lead to permanent kidney damage.

If you travel to a new exhibit at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, you will have chances to see some meat-eating plants. Take bladderworts(食虫动物), a kind of such plant, for example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. “But these are the fastest-known killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!
Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes(酶) similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insect. When dinner is over, the plant open the trap door and is ready to trap again.
Meat-eating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn’t offer much food value. In such conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands of years. North America has more such plants than any other continent.
Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers (a container like a bottle) full of nectar(花蜜).
The Asian pitcher plant, for example, has bright colors and an attractive half-closed lid. Curious insects are tempted to come close and take a sip, then slide down the slippery(光滑的) slope to their deaths.
Hair-like growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing can escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days.
Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold two gallons(7.5 liters). Meat-eating plants only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn’t a good place to get a drink.
72. From the first paragraph, we learn that bladderworts can________.

A. fooling insects into taking a sip
B. producing nectar

D. enjoying a dinner
74. Meat-eating plants can grow in wet and poor soil because they________.
A. can get nutrition from animals
B. don’t need much food value
C. can make the most of such conditions
D. have developed digestive enzymes
75. What can be captured by meat-eating plants for food?
A. A child.

It Is High Time We Saved Water
As is known to all, water is the source of life. Men as well as plants and animals depend water to live. Water is used for cooking, drinking, washing, swimming, farming and so on.
However, it is high time we saved water now. With population increasing fast, more water is being needed; with more water being polluted, less water is available. If we don’t save water, lack of water would cause terrible disasters to humans.
What can we do to save water? Here are some measures to take. Firstly, we should strengthen the sense of saving water. Secondly, we should try our best to protect water from being polluted. Thirdly, recycling water is an effective way to save water. (126 words)

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I tho ught I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we’re growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m B ritish actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago.
I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings. W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages —you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday —French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.。
