Wishing to encourage her young son’s progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to attend a concert given by Paderewski, the famous pianist. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked away to greet her.
Seizing the chance to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.” When the house lights became darker and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered
that the child was missing.
Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway piano on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently playing Twinkle, Twinkle Star.
At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in that boy’s ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.”
Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass(低音) part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato(伴奏).Together, the old master and the young beginner transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was mesmerized.
That’s the way it is in life. What we can acplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren’t exactly graceful flowing music. But when we trust in the hands of a Grea ter Power, our life’s work truly can be beautiful.
Next time you set out to acplish great achievements, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.”

Summer is almost here, which means it is time to sign your kids up for swim classes again at the munity Pool. Classes begin on Monday, May 1, and will continue throughout the summer. Fifteen swim classes are being offered. Each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs $20. The pool is big enough for six students per class.
Classes will increase in difficulty each week. The first week is for children up to six years old.
The last week is for advanced swimmers who want to improve their race skills.
Students can sign up for as many classes as they like, but they must pass the skills level test. For example, students who sign up for Level 4 (Stroke Readiness) must show their certificate for pleting Level 3 or must demonstrate the front crawl and backstroke. If you love dogs and prepared to help physically challenged people, here is a chance. Call the Shanghai Association for the Disabled to apply to foster (领养) a Labrador — the city’s first group of seeing eye dogs.
“One of the major conditions for applicants is they can’t keep another animal in the house, and have large space for the dog to move about,” a staff member surnamed Mo told China Daily.
During the six-to-eight-month period when the dog is with the volunteer, he or she is expected to properly look after the animal and treat it as a member of the family.
“They are not supposed to give the dog any special training, but to bond with it, so it gets used to living with humans,” Mo said.
Six puppies are now with foster families, and will start their training as seeing eye dogs when they are 6 to 8 months old.
The puppies are being provided by Nanjing’s Police Dog Institution, and trained by Japan’s Seeing Eye Dog Association.
“We chose Labradors because they are the best breed that can be trained as seeing eye dogs,”Mo said. “We also considered German shepherds, which are very gentle after proper training, but people are often afraid of them.”
“We have received hundreds of applications so far,” Mo said. However, she could not say how many families would be chosen, or how many puppies would be sent to foster homes.
“We have just started this project. So there is still much to be decided,” Mo said.
“The cost of training a seeing eye dog is expected to be more than 100,000 yuan ($12,300). Besides Shanghai, Dalian also has a training program for seeing eye dogs,” Mo said.
Shanghai has a total blind population of 160,000. The first group of dogs will be given “to the most needy.”
63.The volunteers are expected to do the following EXCEPT _________.
A.be friendly to the dogs
B.train the dogs properly
C.provide enough room for the dogs
D.view the dog as one of the family members
64.Ms. Mo explained __________.
A.why they chose Labradors as seeing eye dogs
B.how many families would take a Labrador home
C.what the total cost of the project would be
D.how the Shanghai Association for the Disabled trained the seeing eye dogs
65.Which of the following pictures is most likely to be a German shepherd?
A. B.
C. D.
66.We can infer from the text that ___________.
A. some blind people in Shanghai will get a seeing eye dog in 6 months
B. once you apply to foster a Labrador, your request will soon be satisfied
C. the population of blind people is increasing fast
D. Japan’s Seeing Eye Dog Association will make a lot of money

For most Chinese university students, the US is a favorite destination for further education. But apart from obstacles such as the GRE and TOEFL exams, choosing a good graduate school is no easy task.
Admission is very petitive for international students, so it is important to apply to a number of universities to have a reasonable chance of acceptance.
Since the application to most universities is not free of charge, Chinese students usually choose seven to 17 universities according to their own financial circumstances.
When Wang Yuwei, a 24-year-old Zhejiang University graduate began looking for a US graduate school in her senior year, she took time to pare the various schools and find the ones most suiting her needs. Now, studying at the University of Washington, she knows that her hard work paid off.
“To broaden your chances, at least one third of the applications should be to less selective schools,” said Wang. “Applicants shouldn’t limit their choices to the most famous universities.”
Furthermore, one shouldn’t rely too much on college rankings such as the Gorman Report or US News & World Report’s annual league tables.
The right school is the one that best meets your own personal needs and interests, rather than someone else’s assessment of a university’s prestige(声望).
“Usually choices are based on one’s personal interests and academic background, but it is important to make sure that your chosen subject is satisfied,” said Wang.
67.The author believes that the right school is the one that _____.
A. has the best location
B. best meets one’s own personal needs and interests
C. best meets one’s assessment of a university’s prestige
D. offers good living conditions
68. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Choosing a good graduate school is a piece of cake.
B. More and more students will go abroad for their further education.
C. To go to America for further education, you must pass the GRE or TOTEL.
D. To get a bet ter chance to go abroad, you’d better apply to a less selective school.
69. In the passage the writer uses the example of Wang Yuwei to show ______.
A. one’s own financial condition is worth considering
B. you must spend a lot of time paring the various schools
C. it isn’t worthwhile to spend time looking for the right university
D. it is necessary to find the suitable university that meets your personal interests
70. What will be continued after this passage?
A. How hard Chinese students studied in America.
B. Some advice on how to take care of yourself in America.
C. The difficulties you will meet with while living in America.
D. Some other things to consider when choosing the right school.

M: I heard this terrible noise in the motor a few days ago, and then the car just seemed to lose its power. I had to have the car pulled here. I’ve never heard of anything like it, especially in an expensive car like this one.
W: Well, let’s go into the manager’s office and talk this matter over.

W: I’ve lived in Hexham all my life. As a matter of fact, I was born in this house. That’s the way it used to be in the old days. People never used to move away from their hometown. They were born in a place, and they lived there until they died. My husband died ten years ago. We had seventy wonderful years together. We were very much alike. Both of us loved a good conversation. People used to talk to each other more in the past. Now they watch TV. Yes, I have lived for a hundred years. As for my secret of long life, well, I laugh a lot. Laughing is very important and also I keep myself busy. I get a lot of exercise, too. I’ve always enjoyed sports. I went skiing and horseback riding regularly until I was eighty-five. And I have always liked swimming. In fact, I still swim every day at the high school pool, and I have started running a little with my second husband.

M: The reason I’ve asked this small group to stay after class is that I would like to talk to you about your weak test scores. I’ve noticed that some of you seem to be scoring lower and lower on your exams and tests in the last month. I’m not sure if you’re having personal problems, or if you have bad study habits, or if you’re just having a hard time with the material. Whatever the problem is, I want you to know that you all have the ability to pass the class if you work hard and use effective study skills. You may not realize this, but even the famous Albert Einstein, had difficulty passing tests. In 1923, after spending weeks in preparation, the young Einstein failed an entrance exam to the University of Zurich. It was only by examining his mistakes and better understanding the test requirements that Einstein was able to retake the test and finally succeed in his goal. You have the same chance at this point. You are behind, but it’s not too late to catch up. The best advice I can give you is that you should e to my office and discuss all your problems in person. At the very least, I can certainly offer you some helpful test-taking methods for the ing midterm.36964 9064 遤t22846 593E 夾37411 9223 鈣36241 8D91 趑22761 58E9 壩8A20167 4EC7 仇32499 7EF3 绳33839 842F 萯24993 61A1 憡40090 9C9A 鲚i。
