Twenty-three years ago, in a small town in France, the then 12-year-old girl Zugay and her 17-year-old elder sister Vanja lost their parents. They had nobody to depend on except their brother, who was a college student in Minnesota, America. The brother borrowed some money and managed to send his sisters two flight tickets, which would allow them to fly to America to stay with him. The two poor girls boarded the plane to America.
On the plane, next to the girls sat two ladies, who appeared to be in their late 30s. One wore a black pigtail. The other had mid-length fair hair. Both women carried tennis rackets (球拍). They talked about playing tennis in Paris.
When it was time for lunch, the stewardess (空姐) handed out food to the passengers. But the two girls got none, because their flight tickets didn’t include lunch. Despite the fact that they were hungry, they couldn’t afford any food. The two ladies noticed it and started conversation with them. Zugay couldn’t speak English at the time, but Vanja was able to carry on more of a conversati on. The two ladies learnt about the girls’ situation and offered to buy lunch for them. Zugay and Vanja were moved to tears. Although Zugay couldn’t speak English, she had a good time with the ladies. She even helped the women with knitting (编织).
Time passed quickly. The flight landed at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. Before leaving, one of the ladies handed them an envelope and made them promise not to open it until they got off the plane.
The girls were later shocked to discover a $100 bill inside. A note on the outside of the envelope read: A friend from the plane—TRACY. In the upper left-hand corner, “Holiday Hotel Garden Court” was printed in blue.

The girls’ brother tried t o find Tracy. He wanted to express his gratitude, telling Tracy how much the money meant to them, which helped feed them for half a month. Based on the clues on the envelope, he reached out to hotels with the name of “Holiday Hotel Garden Court”, airlines and tour companies. But he couldn’t find Tracy. Then he talked with reporters from newspapers about Tracy. But still, in vain.
In recent years, Zugay turned to wider social media to look for Tracy, posting a video sharing her story. Her efforts finally paid off. She received a call from 60-year-old Tracy. The then little girl who couldn’t speak English was now talking with Tracy with great excitement in English. It turned out that Tracy used to be a tennis player, and after she retired, she volunteered to w ork in a nursing home. Zugay said, “Getting that envelope has shaped the way I live my life. I have been trying to be generous and pay it forward. Now I work with charity, helping those in need.”

Little Tom lived with his poor grandmother Donna in a village. Every day, Tom sold potatoes grown by Donna in a market.
One day, an old foreigner aroused Tom’s curiosity. He frequently visited Tom’s stall (摊位) but didn’t buy. The next day, the man passed from one vendor (小贩) to the next, waving a bag around. But he didn’t visit Tom’s stall that day. Out of curiosity, Tom asked a vendor nearby to temporarily look after his stall. Then, he followed the foreigner.
The man went back to his broken-down house near the market and took several old medals from his bag. “Wow!” Tom said. “I won them in my own country,” the man said proudly, then asking why Tom came here. Tom explained, “I’m wondering why you didn’t visit my stall today.” “Oh, I don’t need potatoes. I need firewood, so I walked around the market looking for someone who would buy these medals and give me money in exchange,” he lied.
Tom left and brought back many potatoes from his stall, saying, “If you don’t have money, you can’t buy food. Keep my grandma’s potatoes.” But the man insisted he had enough food. Tom went back, upset; he could see the man was hungry and weak.
The third day, the man reached the market, selling medals again. He valued them, which were his honors. But after a disaster, now he had to sell them to survive. He looked weaker. Tom packed some potatoes, walking towards him again. From his conversations with vendors, Tom found him trying to sell medals for food! But no one believed his medals were true.
Disappointed, the man sat alone by the roadside. Tom approached him, saying, “I saw it! Why didn’t you let me help you?” Almost crying, he said, “I’m sorry, but I was too embarrassed to ask for your help. Now could you give me your potatoes in exchange for the medals?”

Smith almost messed up a “big time”. He was driving his car and coming back from the dentist with his 5-year-old Justus when they saw a homeless man in the street. Smith said on Facebook that he wanted to give the
man some money, but didn’t have any cash. His son Justus noticed the man as well. And then it happened.
Unexpectedly, Justus insisted that his father give the man the 30 cents he had in his pocket. Smith said, “It’s almost as if he heard my thoughts and responded out loud.”
“I was more than happy he wanted to do this with joy, but honestly I was hesitant. I didn’t want to give this man who clearly needed all the help he could get, just 30 cents. My own pride and thoughts of the homeless individual’s unknown reaction to receiving just 30 cents was standing in the way,” said Smith. “I quickly realized that I was the only problem in this situation and that the traffic light would turn green at any second.”
Smith recalled that he almost told his son to wait to give until they at least had one dollar. He almost told his son that what he had wasn’t enough. He almost showed him that what he saw as a good thing wasn’t good enough to make a difference in someone’s life. He almost taught Justus that pride was more important than helping another human.
However, the father told himself to get over the strange thought. He remembered that was what he has been teaching Justus. And now that Justus wanted to give everything he had to offer at that moment, he shouldn’t let his selfishness ruin a great memory and a good teaching moment. Smith said, “Leading by example is what I have been teaching him, so now let him give what he can to this man.”

So the father quickly denied (否定)that foolish idea. He drove the car closer to the man and then rolled down
the window. He told the man he didn’t have any cash, but his son back there wanted to give him everything he had. After hearing what Smith said, the smile on that man’s face lit up the street. The man said to Justus, “Thank you so much!” Justus smiled back. The only thing that matched the brightness of the man’s smile was the bigger smile on the boy’s face!
Then a chain reaction of kindness started. Behind them, other people, who witnessed the warm scene, rolled down their windows to donate, too. The little boy, Justus, without even realizing it, reminded his father and other adults of kindness by his action. Actually, kindness is always about the heart. It doesn’t matter how much you have or how little. Giving love and kindness will often help others. The help is always more than we think.

Jose was a devoted teacher for a local high school in California. Unfortunately, with the money he earned, he couldn’t support hi s family and extended family in Mexico and rent an apartment in California at the same time. Therefore, having failed to afford the rental of even a shoebox apartment, he had no choice but to live in his old car occasionally to make ends meet until he could find another place to live.
To make matters worse, he found himself living this unfortunate lifestyle after Covid-19 swept the world when California schools closed their doors following the outbreak. This left Jose with little means for making money. So at age 77, Jose ended up living inside of his car. For about two years he was homeless. Home was his car, and his
car sat in a grocery store parking lot. During daytime he drove to different locations, looking for job opportunities while he spent most of his nights at the same parking lot, which gave him a sense of belonging.
At day time, he would lean his seat all the way back, so no one would see him because he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there and worried the manager of the grocery store would drive him away. He was a man of self-respect and didn’t want to turn to charity.
When Maggie, the manager of the grocery store did see Jose, she felt he looked familiar because she used to be in his class many years ago. She could still remember how Jose encouraged her to finish her education when she was struggling with her learning. She noticed Jose spent a considerable amount of time in his car, she suspected her teacher had fallen on hard times. She became determined to help her former teacher in his time of need. So, the former student decided to repay the favor and help her homeless teacher.

Tears in eyes, Maggie asked him whether he still remembered her. Jose was puzzled at first but soon recognized her. Embarrassed, he told Maggie about his situation. Maggie took out an envelope and handed it to Jose. To his surprise, there were $2000 in it. However, the teacher didn’t accept it.
Seeing Jose refused the money, Maggie wanted to help him without hurting his feeling. She decided to offer him a job in her store, saying that all he needed to do was to check the temperature of customers at the gate of the
parking lot. Jose agreed and worked really hard. With his salary, not only could he afford his food but he also managed to rent a little flat. It was small, but he was no longer homeless. Kindness and dedication will pay off one day.
