Knowledge is power as West wanes
Every September parents travel with their children to help them enroll (注册)at universities across the country。

This does not make 36 in China。

But recently, a photo 37 at a university in Wuhan caught the 38 of Jeremy Warner,a commentator (评论员)with the UK’s Daily Telegraph newspaper。

The photo was of parents 39 down for the night in the campus gym made 40 to those who could not afford a hotel room.
Chinese commentators and educators have pointed out that 41 kids to college does not help them adjust to campus 42 . But Warner read a totally different message from the photo。

He said that in the UK or other 43 economies, parents usually don’t bother to accompany their children to university。

To Warner, this was “a 44 sign of growing gulf in ambition that separates the aspiring (有抱负的)developing world 45 the tired, old, advanced economies.”
He said the future looks bright for the developing world。

In 46 , and most other developing countries, going to university offers a route to a 47 future.
But in the West, “people have lost their 48 in self-improvement and seem already resigned to a future of gentle or even catastrophic decline,” Warner wrote。

He went on to analyze China’s 49 strategy: The number of college graduates is increasing at a higher speed。

50 , the focus of education is strongly on the sciences。

For Warner the 51 “is both an inspiration and a cause for alarm, for it vividly 52 how the West’s “monopoly (垄断)” on knowledge—the biggest source of its relative wealth—is likely to be 53 destroyed over the next decade.”
In his 54 ,Warner suggested that the British government has much to learn about education from the 55 world.

English as a second language (ESL) websites for children can help build vocabulary, teach correct spelling and pronunciation of words, and assist with basic grammar such as understanding sentence structure, parts of speech, tenses, and singular and plural word forms. English learning websites for children include:
•ESL Kid is an organized website that serves as a comprehensive directory of English as a second language resources for children, teachers, and parents. There are categories for different subjects, such as ABC games, dictionary, spelling, literature and music。

Since this is just a
directory, parents should help children explore the sites linked to it.•MES Games has several categories of interactive games. Some games are more suited to younger children and beginning learners, such as the vocabulary building games in which players must first listen to a spoken word and then identify the correct items。

More advanced children will enjoy online sport games based on grammar concepts that go with multiple choice questions.
•ESL Kids Lab has many resources for helping children learn English as a second language. These include free video English lessons categorized by grade level, ideas for games, and printable worksheets。

However, the inferiority of this website is also obvious—it contains lots of advertisements.•ESL Kid Stuff has a variety of resources, including a list of select online English learning games and song lyric sheets. Downloading worksheets and flashcards requires a yearly membership fee, however.
•English Interactive lets children and beginning ESL students click on words to hear their pronunciation and build essential vocabulary skills。

After viewing the words, students can try an interactive quiz。

•English Vocabulary Games has a variety of interactive games designed to help ESL children build vocabulary.

Some people who find themselves unable to solve a problem react (反应)by just giving up。

But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through: meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities。

If you are unhappy about something, face it. Try to state the
problem in a few words, so that you will know exactly what you are up against. Then see if you can “put your finger" on the cause of your unhappiness。

In many cases, we only “think” there is no solution to a particular problem。

But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.
For example, a boy wanted to be a debater (辩论家)。

When he tried out for the debating team as a freshman, the coach thought he was hopeless。

He was shy;he had a high-pitched voice; and his posture (体态) was poor. Although he was given little hope of success,he took advantage of every opportunity to debate。

He studied successful speakers and sized up his own weaknesses and assets. Then he spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked at developing good posture and at speaking clearly。

By his junior year, he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he was on the winning team in his state。

He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his problem。

Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations。

Sometimes it is necessary to change the tactics (策略)or the goal .
A girl who has plain features may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further。

In this
situation, she must change her method of achieving her goal.
So, although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems, it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do。

60. What is the main idea discussed in the first paragraph?
A。

Giving up a puzzling problem。

B. Escaping from problems by making excuses for failures。

C。

Going through the same difficult process. D。

Testing people’s abilities。

61. The phrase “are up against" in the second paragraph could best be replaced by _______.
A。

are fond of B. are faced with C. met with D。

looked at
62. By taking example from the boy who wanted to be a debater, the author means ________。

A。

you are going through new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities
B. we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack
C。

it is necessary to change either the tactics or the goal
D。

it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do
63。

Which of the following is the topic sentence of the text?
A。

It is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures.
B。

If you are unhappy about something, face it, and try to state the problem in a few words。

C. Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems,we
have to be realistic in judging situations.
D. Although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it
is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about
what to do.

Read a whole book in English?Me?
Yes, you. Believe it or not that may be easier than you think. Not all classics are too difficult or complicated。

So you’re not limited to simplified versions (简写本). And the easier books are not for young children。

Books in their original versions (原著) may send you to the dictionary。

And you might not understand everything you read. But reading one from cover to cover will give you a real sense of accomplishment. The key is to find the right books。

Let’s take a look at these.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis)
Stepping into an old wardrobe, four English schoolchildren find themselves in the magical world of Narnia. In this delightful land, they
find friends among the many talking creatures。

The children soon discover, however, that Narnia is ruled by the White Witch。

Edmund, one of the children, falls under her power. Who can free Narnia?Only Aslan, the great and noble lion。

He alone knows the Deeper Magic。

But the children themselves must help fight the battle against the White Witch and those who save her.
The Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway)
Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, hasn’t caught any fish in more than 80 days. Sailing far out from land, the old man hooks an enormous fish。

That begins an agonizing three—day battle. First he struggles against the great fish。

Then he must fight off the sharks that circle the little boat and threaten to eat his fish。

Exhausted and bleeding, the old man arrives back at shore。

But his fish,his beautiful fish…
Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize for this superb story of strength and courage,of victory and regret.
A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine Lingle)
Meg's father, a US government scientist, has been missing for many months。

He had been experimenting with time travel when he mysteriously disappeared.
Now Meg, her little brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin will try to rescue him。

But first they must outwit the forces of evil they encounter on their journey through time and space。

Can they find Meg's father before it is too late?
This novel is more than just a science-fiction adventure。

It’s an exploration of the nature of our universe.
The Pearl (John Steinbeck)
One day Kino,a poor Mexican pearl diver, finds a magnificent pearl。

With it he dreams of buying a better life, new clothes and schooling for his son. Instead it brings only evil。

His wife pleads with him to get rid of it. “No," says Kino. “I will have my chance. I am a man。

" But when he kills a man who is trying to steal the pearl,Kino and his wife must run for their lives。

This tale of dreams, justice and the power of greed is told simply and beautifully.
The Long Winter (Laura Ingalls Wilder)
It's winter,1880—8-1, on American’s northern prairies. Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls and their four girls stay near the kitchen stove to keep warm. Heavy snowstorms cut them off even from neighbors。

With the trains stopped,no supplies can reach the town. Food and fuels are running out. Day after day the girls must grind wheat for bread and twist hay to burn。

At times they nearly lose the battle to keep their spirits up.
This story provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of early American settlers。

64. In this passage, the author intends to ________。

A。

recommend a few simplified versions of classics
B. recommend a few original versions of classics
C. tell us how to read an English book from beginning to end
D。

tell us how to find proper English books to read
65。

A。

an evil woman with magic power B. a friendly woman with magic power
C。

a delightful talking creature D。

a powerful lion with magic
66. The underlined word “outwit" in the passage probably means _________。

A. get rid of B。

seize control of C. beat by being cleverer D. make the most of
67。

A Wrinkle in Time is different from other books mentioned in the passage in that _______。

A。

it is not a science—fiction B. it tells a true story of adventure
C. it provides some scientific knowledge D。

it tells the battle between justice and evil
D
Do not live in the past whether you are thinking about your personality or your life;success means focusing on the here and now. While it is important to acknowledge the choices and experiences which resulted in you being where you are today,it is equally important not to
allow yourself to become so caught up in thoughts of the past that the present day passes you by。

Self—motivation is the key to ensuring that you do not continue repeating the same mistakes. You may have had one or more errors in judgment which led you to take the wrong path, or to make mistakes that were not in your best interest。

You can acknowledge this without rehashing (重复谈论)them over and over again in your mind, and simply be determined to make different, better decisions today.
Then is over;this is now。

The less time and effort you put into looking at the past, the more you will have for living and experiencing this day. You will also find that letting go of the past will give you a deeper sense of strength。

Instead of allowing past mistakes and worries to drain your energies, you will have a renewed energy to live your life to the fullest and enjoy it more。

Being content with yourself and optimistic (乐观的) about your future is not difficult. Whatever is in the past is over; learn from it and move on。

When you are self—motivated enough to do this, you will see that moving ahead is the best definition of living life。

With that said, what can you do now? Sure it is easy for me to tell you to forget the past, yet it is a whole different practice to actually do it. Life is a complex set of events, much of which of course is real, yet a large amount is just your view of what really happened.
The first step in trying to minimize (最小化)the effects of your past
in order to concentrate on your future is to find out how much of the past that you are certain happened was just mistakes on your part.
68。

In order to enjoy one’s life fully, one should ________。

A. think more about his personality and life in the past
B. be determined to make different and better decisions
C. acknowledge his choices and experiences
D。

let go of the past and experience today
69。

Which of the following best summarizes the writer’s view of the past?
A. One should be content with himself and optimistic about the future.
B。

Moving ahead without looking back can help concentrate on one’s life。

C. One should be self-motivated to learn from the past and concentrate on future.
D。

Finding out the mistakes on one’s part can help minimize the effects of the past。

70. Which of the following can be the best title?
A。

Work with the “Now”B。

Being Where You Are Today
C. Concentrate on Your Future
D. Self—motivation, a Key to Future

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes。

While people traditionally prioritize (区分)caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self—absorbed and self—concerned。

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life。

They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greed and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas。

In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues。

We are in any way advocating (主张)any selfish conduct。

It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice,it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary。

In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish
things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either。

Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite。

But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure。

However,we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?

One possible version:
The students of our school had a discussion about whether listening test in the National Matriculation English Test should be kept or canceled。

Some students think that listening test should not be canceled。

They insist listening is among the four basic skills。

We therefore can not ignore it. Besides, listening is one of the important channels for us to get information from the outside world。

So it should be strengthened today when international cooperation is becoming more and more frequent. But others don’t agree。

They think not everyone has to communicate with
foreigners in the future。

Moreover, listening test is unfair to the students in the areas where radio signals cannot be picked up effectively。

And for certain reasons, there is a big difference in teachers and equipment between the countryside and the city。

W: That shouldn't be difficult. Why don't you phone me about January 10th? I should be able to give you an answer then。

M: Thank you。

W:Hi,Martin. How are you?
M:Fine, but busy. We've got some exams next week—remember? W:I know. How much work did you do last night?
M:None. I went to the cinema。

What about you?
W:I had no time last night。

It was my sister’s birthday, so we all went out to dinner.
M:Have you done any work this morning?
W:Some,but not a lot。

Anyway,I rang to ask you something。

Do you know where my physics book is?
M:I’ve got no idea, but you can borrow mine if you want。

W:Thanks.
M:Let’s meet outside Natank in High Street at lunch time. I’ll bring my physics book to you。

W: Good idea。

I’m very worried about the physics exam。

Have you got any old exam papers?I’d
really like to look through them。

M:I haven’t,but my brother’s got some。

I’ll bring them with me at lunch time.
W: Wonderful!See you at 12:30. OK?

M:Our flight has been delayed for two hours. My partners are waiting for me at London Airport.
W:Where do you come from?
M: Beijing。

I was at a two-week conference there on Space Technology. W: Really?Which places did you visit?
M:Apart from Beijing,we went to Nanjing, Shanghai,Xi’an, Hangzhou and Guangzhou。

W: Did you enjoy it?
M:Very much. It was one of the most exciting tours I’ve ever made。

Was this your first trip to China?
W: Oh, no, I go almost every year. Unfortunately, it’s always on space-related business,so I've only seen the inside of conference rooms and factories。

I haven't had the chance to visit any sites。

M: Oh, it’s a great pity!
