Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a go od friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous
;be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be ab le to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usuall y find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, y ou may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship gr ow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very val uable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you . By sharing them you help your friend know you better. Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend ca n be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in yo ur friend’s place so you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendshi ps have three things in common. If you plan to keep your frien dships, you must practice honesty. Generosity and understan ding.

26. According to the author, how do you help your friend know you better?

C. Share your ideas and feelings with your friend
D. Give your lunch money or your clothes to your friend.
27. The best title of this passage is .

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistl e when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time ju st because they are happy. However, they sing most of the ti me for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warn ing to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that a n animal, usually the male, claims(声称)
as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No othe r families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and ho use are your territory where only your family and friends are w elcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten y ou, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighte n him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without havi ng to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s son g, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of i t has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
28. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds’ singin
g is actually ______.
A. a way of greeting
B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger
D. an expression of happiness
29. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?
A. By reporting experiment results.
B. By describing birds’ daily life.
C. By comparing birds with human beings.
D. By telling a bird’s story.
30. What is a bird’s“territory”?
A. An area which a bird considers to be its own.
B. An area for which birds fight against each other.
C. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.
D. A place where families of other species are not accepted.
31. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because they want to find outsiders around.
B. Because they want to invite more friends.
C. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.
D
There is a Website called the “World Database of Happiness”. It combines and analyzes the results of hundreds of surveys f rom around the world that have been conducted on life satisfa ction. Most of the findings are predictable, but a few are surpri sing.
The database makes it clear that there is not a strong connect ion between material wealth and general satisfaction. It is a cli che (陈词滥
调) to say that money can’t buy happiness, but the old saying seems to be supported by research. Many people still believe that gaining riches will be the answer to all their problems, yet they are probably mistaken.
Studies have been carried out on people who got sudden wea lth, such as lottery (彩
票) winners. In most cases, after the initial joy had worn off, p eople were not left with a sense of lasting happiness. In fact, t hey tended to go back to the way they felt before they becam e rich.
If material wealth does not bring happiness, then what does? Perhaps happiness has something to do with where you live. The authorities at the World Database on Happiness have sur
veyed levels of happiness in different countries. Obviously, pe ople in America, Canada, and Singapore are very happy; peo ple living in India and Russia, not surprisingly, are not happy. Other surveys consistently point to the importance of relations hips. Family relationships in particular seem to be the key to l ong-
term happiness. The website suggests that falling in love and having children are two of the situations that bring the greates t happiness.
Nowadays people look to technology as another source of sat isfaction. People increasingly spend more time alone watchin g TV or surfing the Internet rather than spending time with fa mily. Can technology truly make people happy? It is too difficu lt to tell, but one thing is sure: If the website’s research is right , time spent with your family is a better investment than time s pent making money.
32. The Website World Database of Happiness is designed to ______ .
A. find out the reason for happiness
B. share stories o f happiness
C. conduct surveys around the world
D. tell interviewe es how to be happy
33. Who is the happiest according to the passage?
A. A Russian falling in love with a soulmate recently.
B. A mother who stays with her family everyday in America.
C. A student who has three high-income part-
time jobs in India.
D. An unhappy man who has won a lottery in Singapore.
34. What seems to be the author’s advice about happiness?
A. Making money is not the only way to happiness.
B. Levels of happiness vary from country to country.
C. It is uncertain whether technology make people happy.
D. A good family relationship is the key to lasting happiness .
35. What’s the author’s attitude to technology?
A. Neutral.
B. Supportive.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. Ho wever, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warni ng to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, clai ms(声称)
as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probabl y this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screami ng is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mate。
