第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每小题所给四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
Back in 2001, Jason Katz realized he was in trouble. His fledgling(刚开始的)website, Paltalk, was trying to make money by giving away a free service and selling
advertising.
But suddenly advertising was drying up. So Katz started charging people for using his service.Guess what? Since 2004 he’s been making a profit.
It’s a mistake that a lot of bigger tech companies are making. Facebook, for example, has 250 million members, making it one of the biggest sites on the Internet.Facebook takes in somewhere between$300 million and$500 million a year from advertising, but it’s never made a profit, nor has Twitter. YouTube, the video site owned by Google, sells ads but runs at a loss.
Why not charge people for using these sites? If the service is so useful, surely people would pay. Meanwhile, the most obvious answer hangs right out there in the open:charge a fee to use the service! I'm not even close to being an eager member of Facebook, but I do consider it useful and l would gladly pay $5 per month.
So why don’t more websites do it? The idea, clearly, is that charging money would limit growth and be shortsighted; that there’s a bigger opportunity if membership remains free and everyone in the world can join.
Katz didn’t have this all planned out from the start. At first Palhalk was just a kind of fancy version of instant messaging—basically text plus voice. In 2001 Katz added video, and that’s where he started making money. You can trade instant messages for free on Paltalk with up to 10 people and see their video streams(视频流).But if you want to visit chat rooms and see video streams from hundreds of people, you must pay$14.95 per month.
Katz still runs ads.The funny thing is th at if Katz hadn’t dared to charge fees back in 2001,he wouldn’t be in business today. That’s something the big guys might want to keep in mind.
46. Before 2001, Jason Katz’s earnings from his website mainly depended on____.
A. charging his users
B. selling advertising
C. providing high-quality services
D. attracting new users
47. In the opinion of the author,Facebook has never made a profit because__.
A.it lacks enough users B.its users are very poor
C.it can't make money from advertising D.it doesn’t charge its users
48. The author’s attitude towards Jason Katz’s way of running his website is___.
A.doubtful B.critical C. supportive D. negative
49. What does the underlined part “the big guys” in the last para graph refer to?
A.The advertisers. B. Instant messages.
C.The Internet users. D. The bigger tech companies.

Everyone knows that bad weather can depress you, but what about its effects on company profits? It’s difficult to sell ice-cream when it’s cold, or attract customers to a ski resort when there is no snow. So what precautions can these businesses take?
Companies often have insurance against negative changes in interest or foreign exchange rates. Insuring against bad weather is simply another form of risk management. In the USA, the market for this type of insurance is worth an estimated $9 billion a year.
Agriculture, energy and leisure are just three examples of industries that depend on the weather. The number of visitors to a theme park like Disneyland falls in a wet summer, and a mild winter reduces the demand for heating and affects the energy sector.
One advantage of this type of insurance is that it is easy to measure the weather. You can give detailed information about temperature, hours of sunshine, wind speed or inches of rainfall. For example, the London wine bar chain, Corney and Barrow, has a deal with Speedwell Weather Derivatives. Their open-air terraces(阳台)are an important attraction for customers in the summer months. Obviously this depends on dry, sunny weather. They receive a payout(支付)for every Thursday and Friday (the best drinking times in London’s business district) when the temperature does not rise about 24 degrees centigrade.
Commercial airfields have problems when there is a lot of wind. They can take out insurance against the average wind speed exceeding a certain level. This way they receive payment for loss of income on days when high winds stop them flying.
In some countries there is a problem with this type of insurance. The climate is very changeable and weather information isn’t very reliable. This makes it more difficult to assess the risks. On the other hand, it gives people something to talk about!
50. What may Speedwell Weather Derivatives be?
A. A building.
B. A weather station.
C.A wine production company.
D. An insurance company.
51. Why does the bar chain receive a payout sometimes for Thursday and Friday?
A. Because they have fewer guests on those days.
B. Because the rent is higher in the summer months.
C. Because their business is always booming on those days.
D. Because they have insured against the bad weather on those days.
52. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How bad weather affects company profits.
B. How companies prevent economic loss by insuring against bad weather.
C. Why insurance against bad weather is necessary for companies in the USA.
D. What insurance companies can do for industries that depend on the weather.
C
Plants grow faster if you talk to them and the effect is even better if you’re a woman. Researchers at Royal Horticultural(园艺的)Society carried out an experiment to find that the voice of a woman gardener makes plants grow faster.
The experiment lasted a month and by the end of the study scientists managed to discover that tomato plants grew up two inches taller when women gardeners talked to them instead of male.
Sarah Darwin was the one making the plants registered the best growth. Her voice was more “inspiring” for plants than those of nine other gardeners when they read a passage from The Origin of Species. The great-great-grand daughter of the famous botanist(植物学家) Charles Darwin found that her plant grew about two inches taller than the plant of the best male gardener.
Colin Crosbie,Garden Superintendent at RHS,said that the findings cannot yet be
explained. He assumes that women have a greater range of pitch and tone which might have a certain effect on the sound waves that reach the plant.“Sound waves are an environmental effect just like rain or light, said Mr Crosbie.
The study began in April at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey. Scientists started with open auditions for the people who were asked to record passages from John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids,Shakespeare’s A Midsummer's Night Dream and Darwin’s The Origin of Species.
Afterwards researchers selected a number of different voices and played them to10 tomato plants during a period of a month. Each plant had headphones connected to it.Through the headphones the sound waves could hit the plants.Scientists decided to leave two plants in silence, thus to be positive that the experiment is fair. It was discovered that plants that “listened” to female voices in average grew taller by an inch in comparison to plants that heard male voices.
Miss Darwin said, “I think it is an honor to have a voice that can make tomatoes grow, and especially fitting because for a number of years I have been studying wild tomatoes from the Galapagos Islands at the Natural History Museum in London.”
53. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Plants enjoying men’s voices more than women’s.
B. A botanical experiment in a museum.
C. Strange phenomenon at Royal Horticultural Society.
D. Voice’s influence on plant growing.
54. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Plants need sound as well as rain and light.
B.Sound is basic for the plant to grow.
C.Sound has a good effect as rain or light does.‘
D.Plants can’t live without sound,rain or light.
55.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The experiment ended in May.
B.Scientists can explain the findings clearly.
C.The finding is of great importance to human beings.
D.Plants enjoy listening to the passages from masterpieces.
56. We can infer from the passage that Sarah Darwin is most likely a(an)——.
A.botanist B.gardener C.astronomer D environmentalist

When next year’s crop of high school graduates arrive at Oxford University in the fall of 2009, they’ll be joined by a new face: Andrew Hamilton, the 55-year-old provost (教务长) of Yale, who’ll become Oxford’s vice-chancellor---a position equivalent (equal) to university president in America.
Hamilton isn’t the only educator crossing the Atlantic. Schools in France, Egypt, Singapore, etc. have also recently made top-level hire from abroad. Higher education has become a big and competitive business nowadays, and like so many businesses, it’s gone global. Yet the talent flow isn’t universal. High-level personnel tend to head in
only one direction: outward from America.
The chief reason is that American schools don’t tend to seriously consider looking abroad. For example, when the board of the University of Colorado searched for a new president, it wanted a leader familiar with the state government, a major source of the university’s budg et. “We didn’t do any global consideration,”says Patricia Hayes, the board’s chair. The board ultimately picked Bruce Benson, a 69-year old Colorado businessman and political activist who is likely to do well in the main task of modern university presidents:fund-raising. Fund-raising is a distinctively American thing, since US schools rely heavily on donations. The fund-raising ability is largely a product of experience and necessity.
Many European universities, meanwhile, are still mostly dependent on government funding. But government support has failed to keep pace with rising student numbers. The decline in government support has made fund-raising an increasingly necessary ability among administrators, and has made hiring committees hungry for Americans.
In the past few years, prominent schools around the world have joined the trend. In 2003, when Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard, another former Yale provost, as its vice-chancellor, the university publicly stressed that in her previous job she had oversee(监督) “a major strengthening of Yale’s financial position.”
Of course, fund-raising isn’t the only skill outsiders offer. The globalization of education means more universities will be seeking heads with international experience of some kind to promote international programs and attract a global student body. Foreigners can offer a fresh perspective on established practices.
57. What is the chief consideration of American universities when hiring top-level
administrators?
A. Their political correctness.
B. Their ability to raise funds.
C. Their fame in academic circles.
D. Their administrative experience.
58. What do we learn about European universities from the passage?
A. The tuitions they charge have been rising considerably.
B. Their operation is under strict government supervision.
C. They are strengthening their position by globalization.
D. Most of their money comes from the government.
59. Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard as its vice-chancellor chiefly
because _____.
A. she was known to be good at raising money
B. she could help strengthen its ties with Yale
C. she knew how to attract students overseas
D. she had improv ed Yale’s academic status
60. In what way do top-level administrators from abroad contribute to university
development?
A. They can enhance the university’s image.
B. They will bring with them international faculty.
C. They will view a lot of things from a new perspective.
D. They can set up new academic disciplines.

The ACT is offered nationally several times a year, between September and June. However, it's not offered at every test center on each test date. One possible version:
In recent years, various tourism agencies organize high school students to visit campuses of famous universities around the country during their summer and winter holidays. People’s opinion vary a lot over this issue.
On the one hand, many people, including some students , hold the opinion that university tours provide them with precious opportunities to see and experience university life. And this experience might inspire them to work harder to fulfill their dreams.
On the other hand, some other people think that it is no use just walking around a university. This kind of understanding is only skin-deep and it can be nothing but a waste of money and time.
In my opinion, since tourism will inevitably affect the normal life of the university students who stay on campus to study during the holidays, such tours make little sense to me.。
