The office has always been a place to get ahead. Unfortunately, it is also a place where a lot of natural resources start to fall behind. Take a look around next time you’re at work. See how many lights are left on when people leave. See how much paper is being wasted, how much electricity is being used to run computers that are left on. Look at how much water is being wasted in the restrooms. And how much solid waste is being thrown out in the rubbish cans. We bet〔确信,打HY〕it’s a lot.
Now, here are some simple ways you can produce less waste at work. When you are at the copier(复印机), only make the copies you need. Use both sides of the paper when writing something less important. Turn off your lights when you leave. Use a lower watt bulb in your lamp. Drink your coffee or tea out of your mugs instead of single-use cups. Set up a recycling box for cans and
one for bottles. And when you’re in the bathroom brushing your teeth or washing your face, don’t let the tap run. Remember, if we use fewer resources today, w e’ll save more for tomorrow.

Jeanne Calment, a French woman, became a record breaker on October 17 of 1995, when at the age of 120 years and 238 days, she became the longest-lived human being on record. A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237 days.
Jeanne Calment lives in a small old people’s home in the south of France; her husband, her only child and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair(轮椅), but her doctor describes her as being “more like a 90-year-old in good health than someone of 120”. She still has a lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied. “A very short one〞. She also remarked(谈及) that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her.
So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three important factors(因素). Jeanne Calment has followed two of the tips. She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she used to do exercises every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two glasses of strong red wine a day, and she does smoke (now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Calment might have got very good genes from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move(一步好棋) at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying, “Sorry, I’m still alive!〞
66. Jeanne Calment became a very famous woman on October 17,1995 because .
A. her age was almost the same as that of an old Japanese man
B. she was a famous sports woman and a world record holder
C. she set a new world record in the age of human beings
D. she lived longer than her husband, her son and grandson
67. How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?
A. She is upset and unhappy
B. She is cheerful and humorous
C. She would like to live much longer
D. She feels she is going to die very soon
68. The text seems to suggest that Jeanne Calment owes her good health and long life to
.
A. smoking only a little every day
B. neither smoking nor drinking
C. always drinking two glasses of strong red wine a day and never smoking
D. the good genes from her parents, a healthy diet and some exercises
69. The reason why Jeanne Calment said “Sorry, I’m still alive〞 to the local
lawyer every year on her birthday is that .
A. she had an agreement with the lawyer when she was 80
B. the lawyer has not paid her enough rent yet
C. the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house
D. the house she sold to the lawyer is worth the money he has already paid

Americans do not have a corner on the “death〞 market, but many people feel that the United States leads the world with the worst taxes.
Taxes are made up of the money which people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal(联邦的), state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.
Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand dollars per year must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal (national) government. The percentage is different from person to person. It depends on his or her salary. The federal government has a two-level income tax; that is 15 or 28 percent, $17850 is the cutoff (截止点). The tax rate is 15 percent below $17850 and 28 percent above. The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which you
buy in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a package of gum for twenty-five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in that state, then the cost of the gum is twenty-seven cents.
The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property(房产) tax (residents(居民) who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is connected with vehicles〔交通〕in a city. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departments, pubic works (including street repairs, water and sanitation (卫生) and municipal (政/办的) buildings).
Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes.
77. The income tax for $20,000 paid to the federal government is ___________.
A. $3,000
B. $1,000
C. $1,600
D.$5,600
78. Tax for the city includes ____________.
A. three types of taxes
B. excise tax
C. salary tax
D. sales tax
79. Which of the following statements is true?
A. America leads the world with a very good tax system.
B. People in some states have to pay income tax to state government as much
as to federal government.
C. $17850 is the cutoff for two levels of income tax.
D. Property tax is given on vehicles in a city.
80. What do Americans feel about their tax?
A. It takes away 1/5 of their total work.
B. It is acceptable.

One possible version:
Now in the country areas, there are many children out of school. I think one of the reasons is that their families are too poor to afford their school. As a result, they have to stay at home to get money to keep their families. Another reason is that many parents think it useless for the girls to study and they would not like them to go to school. A third reason is that some children are not interested in their lessons, and would not like to go to school. In my opinion all the children including the girls should have the chance to receive education. All the people should pay attention to the education of the children who will play a very important part in the future of our country.。
