Chimps use loud calls and gestures to make their feelings known but until now, the exact meaning for individual movements has remained a mystery. Now researchers believe they have translated the key gestures used in the chimp community and identified their intentions for the first time.
From 4,351 gestures, experts were able to identify 66 that are used for 19 specific message meanings, including showing a foot to tell a child they can climb on their back. The researchers were able to narrow down these 66 gestures to 36 that are used intentionally to achieve 15 purposes. The translations were made by Dr Catherine Hobaiter and her colleagues at St Andrews University in Scotland.
Dr Hobaiter used behavior sampling and filmed all recorded cases of gestural communication. Other gestures include stomping their feet to ask another chimp to stop what they are doing, and slapping objects together to ask another to follow them. Of the 19 meanings,17 encouraged interactions to start, or to develop, such as “move closer,” and “change play”. Some of the gestures were found to have more than one meaning. and only 10 of the 66 gestures were used for only a single meaning.
Researchers collected a total of 471 video clips from two social groups of chimps at a shelter near Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. As well as identifying what the gesture means, they also discovered the technique needed to increase the chances of success.
“Human children use gestures to communicate before they produce their first words, and their earliest gestures typically appear around 10 months of age,” explained the researchers. “In great apes, there is good evidence that language-trained individuals are capable of acquiring and understanding signals, but this is far less clear in their natural communication. ”

Did you know that horses talk? Well, they do, and you can lean to understand “horse talk” if you pay close attention to the horses you see.
When horses live in the wild, other animals try to eat them, so a lot of horse talk is about staying alive. Even now, when most horses live on farms, they watch for danger. For this reason, never walk behind a horse. If you surprise it, the horse might mistake you for a mountain lion or wolf and give a dangerous kick.
By watching the ears of a horse, you can get clues to what it's hearing. A horse can tum each ear in a different direction. For a wild horse, this trick is important for survival. The horse can hear something sneaking up behind it while also checking out a threatening noise in front. When a horse lets its ears down, it's feeling safe and relaxed. If horses becomeisolated, they neigh, or “whinny,” calling for company. They're saying, “Where are you? I'm over here!” If a horse snorts(哼) while holding its head high and staring at something, it's saying, “That looks dangerous. Get ready to run!” When two horses meet, they put their noses together and smell each other's breath. It's their
way of asking, “Are you a friend?” Horses nicker, too. Nickering is a quiet sort of sound. This friendly noise means they're feeling secure and saying, “Clad to see you.”
In the wild, horses live in herds, with all members watching for danger. In a herd, only one horse is the leader, the “boss hoss”. The “boss hoss” is usually an older female. She watches for threats and teaches younger horses how to behave. However, others may want her job. When that happens, she pins her ears back against her head and may even bite or kick to get challengers to back off. She's using body language to say, “Hey, I'm in charge here!” All horses know that the one who makes others move is the leader. Horses relate to people that way, too.
Horses have a language of their own. Now you know a bit of what they might be saying.
12. What is the general idea of this passage?
A. Horses can talk with their owners.
B. You can know a bit of horses' language.
C. Horses can “talk” in their own way.
D. Other animals can also learn language.
13. What does the underlined word “isolated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Lonely.
B. Glad.
C. Sad.
D. Frightened.
14. What will a horse do when he wants to know whether another horse is a friend?
A. He will let his ears down.
B. He and another horse will put their noses together and smell each other's breath.
C They both will hold their heads high and stare at something.
D. He will give another horse a dangerous kick.
15. How will the “boss hoss” deal with her challengers?
A. By warning or fighting.
B. By watching for threats.
C. By teaching younger horses how to behave.
D. By relating to people.

Finally, I called home on the pay phone. My dad answered, but I___46.___barely hear him for all the good-time noise in the background. My job is model-making. I make small copy of large buildings. When I was at school it was which I wanted to do. But I chose a college course of woodwork. Now I've finished quite a little tasks. The toughest task I had was from Ireland. I was asked do a model of part of a large house that had been burnt down years before. Since then I had done all sorts of buildings. The one I liked most, though, was a theatre I rebuilt it. The originally building was gone, but fortunately I used the previously preparing drawings to finish it.
