Mary, haven’t you ever wondered what you’re reall y like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that agree with her comments. Pay no attention to the things she said that don’t concern you.”
I did as he told me. Much to my surprise, I discovered that over half the things were true. I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t shut your ears. Liste n to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”

These days, more and more Chinese people enjoy sending and receiving messages on the phone. It can help them to get the latest news and communicate with friends. But I think I should read more books besides the textbooks, the more, the better. It can open my eyes and improve my language skills. Of course, it also can help me to get good grades. Do you know how to read more and learn more? Here are some tips for you.
◆ Clear your purpose for reading
Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book. Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge. Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to you, so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.
◆ Read only what you are interested in
No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones
you enjoy.
◆ Give up books that you don’t e njoy
You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are readin g, give it up. Remember reading shouldn’t be a chore (苦差事).
◆ Set a reading goal
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books. Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.
24. According to the passage, the writer might be a ________.
A. teacher
B. student
C. doctor
D. scientist
25. What should you do when you find the book which you are reading is boring?
A. Keep on reading.
B. Set a reading goal.
C. Read the books your friends love.
D. Give up the book.
26. The underlined words “due date” mean in Chinese _________.

D. 日期
27. This passage mainly tells us _________.
A. how to read more and learn more

With the development of our society, cell phones have become a common part in our lives. Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Maybe they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name—phubbers (低头族).
Recently a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes a selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events finally leads to the destruction(毁灭) of the world.
Although the ending of the film sounds unrealistic, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Always bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors’ words. “The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for a long time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. When getting together with family or friends, many people prefer to play their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.
28. Why does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragraph 2?
A. To suggest phubbers will destroy the world.
B. To call for people to go walking without phones.
C. To tell people of the bad effects of phubbing.
D. To advise students to create more cartoons like this.
29. According to the passage, what risks may a phubber have?
①Destructing the world
②Affecting his social skills
③Damaging his neck and eyesig ht
④Getting separated from his friends and family
A. ①②④
B. ②③④
C. ①③④
D. ①②③④
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards phubbing?
A. Supportive
B. Confident
C. Disapproving
D. Unconcerned
31. What will be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Ways to avoid the risks of phubbing.
B. Bad effects of phubbing.
C. Daily life of phubbers.
D. Methods of phubbing.
C 29. B 30. C 31. A
Recently a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities(身份) bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes a selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events finally leads to the destruction (毁灭) of the world.(最近,中央美术学院学生们制作的一幅漫画把这群人聚集在聚光灯下。
根据第三段中“Always bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck, ” Also, staring at cell phones for a long time will damage your eyesight gradually,和第四段第一句But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family.
It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.(低头看手机,也可能以牺牲你的生命为代价。
It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.
D
My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model (型号). I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels (频道) showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched (转换) into a commercial (商业广告), a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique (技巧) would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly
and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.
32. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?
A. He got an older model than he had expected.
B. He could have bought it at a lower price.
C. He couldn’t return it when it was broken.
D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.
33. Which of the following can best replace the phrase “signed off” in Paragraph 1?
A. ended all their programs
B. provided fewer channels
C. changed to commercials
D. showed all-night movies
34. How did the author finally get his TV set working again?
A. By shaking and hitting it.
B. By turning it on and off.
C. By switching channels.
D. By having it repaired.
35. How does the author sound when telling the story?
A. Curious
B. Anxious
C. Careful
D. Humorous
B 33. A 34. D 35. D

How to Sleep Better
If you’re having trouble getting good sleep through the night (turning, waking up more than once, for example), this text will tell you what you can do to ensure
a peaceful night’s sleep.
1. Get up on time. Changing your sleeping time by more than an hour can severely disturb (干扰) your sleep quality. ___36___ For example, if you normally wake up at 6 am on weekdays to get to work, you might go to bed around 10 pm, because that’s when you start to feel sleepy, and it’s also a good time to ensure 8 hours of sleep. If, on the weekend, you sleep until 9 am, you probably won’t be able to fall asleep that night until 1 am.
2. ___37___ Wait at least three hours after dinner before going to sleep. Digestion(消化) slows down while asleep, and a full stomach may interrupt(打搅) sleep. Similarly, you should avoid going to bed on an empty stomach, as a completely empty stomach may equally disturb your sleeping patterns(模式).
3. ___38___ Exposure(暴露) to light during the time when you’re supposed to be sleeping can disrupt(扰乱) your body’s internal clock. Turn your light off, or use a very dim night light. ___39___They include windows, LED clocks, computer lights and cable boxes.
4. Change your sleeping position. You may think that it’s impossible to control what position you sleep in since you don’t fully understand what you are doing, but
it is possible and it can make a big difference. ___40___
A. Try to avoid all sources of light.
B. Keep the room as dark as possible.
C. Make note of unusual circumstances (状况).
D. Be mindful of what you eat or drink before bed.
E. Sleep is considered to be adequate only when there is no daytime sleepiness.
F. In other words, sudden change of sleeping time will affect your “biological(生物的) clock”.
G. If you wake up in the middle of the night, make an effort to have a comfortable position.
38. B 39. A
