Over the last 70 years, researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes. However, of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two.
Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference.
Researchers find that, on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex. In the past half-century, average income has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same. Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.
“Dollars buy status, and status makes people feel better,” conclude some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways-scientists or actors, for example-may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs.
In a research, Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires-not just for money, but for friends, family, job and health-rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap(差距). Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone. “The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income.” says Michalos.
Another factor that has to do with happiness is age. Old age may not be so bad “Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?” asks Professor Laura Carstensen.
In one survey, Carstensen interviewed 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94, and asked them to fill out an emotions questionnaire(问卷调查). She found that old people reported positive emotions just as often as young people. Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it, or they’re more realis tic about their time running out, older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don’t.
“People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot last forever,” she says. “A goodbye kiss to a h usband or wife at the age of 85, for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.”60.According to the passage, the feeling of happiness ___________.
A.is determined partly by genes B.increases gradually with age
C.has little to do with wealth D.is measured by desires
61.Some actors would like to accept poorly-paid jobs because the jobs __________.
A.make them feel much better B.provide chances to make friends
C.improve their social position D.satisfy their professional interests
62.Aged people are more likely to feel happy because they are more ___________.
A.optimistic B.successful C.practical D.emotional
63.Professor Alex Michalos found that people feel less happy if
___________.
A.the gap between reality and desire is bigger B.they have a stronger desire for friendship
C.their income is below their expectation D.the hope for good health is greater

Although international students want to dive into American culture, it is easier to stay close to the familiar.
“Most international students told me that they want to meet and make friends with as many Americans as they can,” said Mark Galloway, Institute for International Studies (IIS) student adviser at Murray State University.“But in reality, they are comfortable with being around people from their own country, if possible.”
Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an admissions(入学) test for international students enrolling in American universities.Galloway said st udents’ scores decreased when they spent less time with American students.More than 450 international students are on campus at Murray State University.Thailand, Japan, South Korea, China and Germany are the countries with the most students this semester, according to an IIS report.
Wichien Eampromate, Thai Student Association president, said poor English ability and cultural differences make it difficult for Thai students to spend time with Americans.“We eat different things; we do different kinds of thing s,” said Eampromate.
On the other hand, Joon-Seong Bae, an exchange student from Korea University, said he tries to avoid hanging around other Koreans. But it is not easy for him.He said he is less comfortable with Americans because he cannot say everything he wants to say, and not all Americans are patient with his limited English.“There were two or three Americans and me,” Bae said.“We talked about something. As time went by, I was
kind of excluded(排斥在外) because they talked to each other.”
While international students venture outside their comfort zones, American students also have the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures.“I know there are a lot (of American students) who want to get to know international students,” said Philip Lee, senior from Boonville, Indiana.“They are just uncomfortable.” Lee said he has learned about life from his international friends, although it is sometimes a challenge.“I can’t live a comfortable life all the time,” Lee said.“I realized there is a great benefit of stepping ou t of my comfort zone to meet people.”
64.From the first paragraph we learn that ________.
A.international students enjoy American culture with difficulty B.international students all go to America without preparation C.American culture, in fact, is the same as others
D.American culture is easy to deal with
65.What Galloway said in this passage means _______.
A.TOEFL is becoming more and more difficult
B.TOEFL is a test held in American universities
C.mixing with native Americans helps learning English
D.America is the only place for us to learn English
66.When American students talk with international students, they ______.A.always feel comfortable B.usually become angry
C.often charge for money D.usually get familiar with other cultures
67.It can be inferred from this passage that ________.A.international students go to America in order to improve their English
B.international students can hardly make any friends in America C.it is necessary for international students to make friends with Americans
D.it is bad for international students to get along with Americans D
The curtain on the 2008 US presidential election finally rose last month as John McCain and Barack Obama were formally nominated (提名) as candidates of the two major parties. This may be one of the hardest decisions voters have to make between two appealing candidates. The big question for voters, as they face both an economic downturn and international threats, is: who will they elect? A young first-term senator promising change and new ideas, or a longtime senator with strong
military experience and a reputation as a maverick (特立独行的人)? American voters have never seen a candidate quite like Obama. He has a white mother from the US and a black father from Kenya who left the family when Obama was very young. He spent part of his youth in Indonesia. His supporters say Obama’s childhood gives him the advantage to repair the recent damage done to America’s image abroad. His opponents focus on his inexperience, noting he hasn’t finished his first term in the Senate.
However, McCain has a very different life story.
He grew up in a Navy family and was a pilot during the Vietnam War in the 1960s.When Obama was in kindergarten in Indonesia, McCain’s plane was shot down over Vietnam and he became a prisoner of war.McCain could have been released if he disowned America but he refused and so was held for five years.
So in the end, the election may hinge on (以…为转移) several factors that are hard to judge: Will Obama’s race matter to a significant number of voters? Will working-class whites who tended to support his primary opponent, Hillary Clinton, vote for Obama? And perhaps most important of all, will swing (摇摆) voters be more drawn to Obama’s vision (远景规划) or to McCain’s experience?
Whatever happens, one thing is clear: Whoever walks into the White House on January 20, 2009, will find enormous challenges waiting for him in the Oval Office, both at home and abroad.
68.______ makes the result of the election hard to predict.A.Whether working class whites care about Obama’s inexperience B.The economic trouble the country now faces
C.Who swing voters will finally decide to vote for
D.McCain’s being too old to govern the country
69.The word “disown” in Paragraph 6 means closest to ______.
A.run away from B.turn one’s back on
C.not keep it private D.expose secrets about 70.The challenges that will face the new president are ______.
A. not mentioned in the text B.building a strong party and a
friendly image
C. the problems of immigrants and economy
D. the problems of economy
and international relations

A website is similar to a newspaper in many ways. First, the articles online and in the newspaper are written by reporters and edited by editors. Second, Newspapers have different sections and websites have different pages. Third, they both use headlines and pictures. Finally, they also make money by selling ads.
However, there are a few differences between them. Although not all websites are updated every day, they can give us the latest news faster than newspapers. But the news in a newspaper does not change all the time. Besides, articles in the newspaper are written by reporters, but websites can be written by anyone. While websites are free, newspapers cost money.
Choosing which news media to trust isn’t easy. It would be better to read more than one source. In my opinion, newspapers are more reliable than websites because it is easier for the reader to find out who wrote the article.
