Three years ago, a group of researchers at Cornell University Food and Brand Lab had a guess. They knew that many apples being served to kids as part of the National School Lunch Program were ending up in the trash, almost untouched. But unlike others, they wondered if the reason was more complicated than simply that the kids didn’t want the fruit.
They thought the fact that the apples were being whole, rather than sliced (切片的), was doing the fruit no favor. And they wanted to prove this idea.
They carried out a study at eight schools and found that fruit consumption (消费) jumped by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. They then made a follow-up study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further supported. The whole apple consumption at schools that served sliced apples reduced by about 50 percent than before.
Based on these results, it seems that even the simplest forms of inconvenience can influence us. Sliced apples just make more sense for kids. The hardest part is getting kids to start eating fruit, and that’s exactly why sliced apples are the way to go. A child holding a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core (果核), and deal with the inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These problems might seem silly or unimportant, but they’re important when you’re missing teeth or have braces (牙箍), as so many kids do.
Sometimes what seems like a really small inconvenience actually makes a huge difference.
4. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Lots of apples served to kids were wasted.
B. Researcher supported the lunch program.
C. Apples are not the only acceptable fruit for kids.
D. The lunch program was well worth spreading.
5. What did researchers want to prove?
A. Kid didn’t want the fruits.
B. Kids favored the whole apples.
C. Kids preferred to the sliced apples.
D. Kid’s eating habits influenced fruit consumption.
6. According to the study, we can know________.
A. 14 schools served sliced fruits
B. kids have problems eating the whole apples
C. eating fruits must be healthy for children
D. few kids are missing teeth or have braces
7. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Form matters more than taste.
B. Apples are beneficial to each kid.
C. The way fruit is eaten links kids’ growth.
D. Inconvenience probably makes a difference.
C
Imaginary friends in childhood refer to the invisible beings that a child gives a personality to and plays with for over three months.
Crabbycrab(蟹)appeared on a holiday in Norway by running out of my four-year-old son Fisher's ear after a night of tears from an earache. Like other childhood imaginary friends, Crabby should be a sign thatFisher's mind is growing and developing positively. Indeed, research shows that imaginary friends can help develop children's social skills.
Research has shown that the positive effects of having imaginary friends as a child continue into adulthood. Adolescents who remember their imaginary playmates have been found to use more activecoping(应对)styles, such as seeking advice from loved ones rather than bottle things up inside. Even adolescents with behavioral problems who had imaginary friends as children have been found to have better coping skills through the teenage years.
Scientists thinkthis could be because these teens have been able to adjust themselves to the social world with imagination rather than choose to be involved in relationships with more difficult classmates. It could also be because the imaginary friends help to reduce these adolescents, loneliness.
These teens are also more likely to seek out social connections -they tend to turn to others for advice. Current research by Tori Watson is taking this evidence and looking at how adolescents who have imaginary friends as children deal withbullying(欺凌)at school. It is found that teens who remember their imaginary friends are better at dealing with bullying.
While we know a lot about childhood imaginary friends such as Crabby Crab and the positive effects they can have, there is still a lot to learn about imaginary friends.
8. What is Crabby crab?
A. It is a crab Fisher caught inNorway.
B. It is Fisher's imaginary friend.
C. It is a toy Fisher like much.
D. It is a cause of earache.
9. Why do children with imaginary friends have better coping skills?
A. Imaginary friends help improve their adjustment.
B. Having imaginary friends makes them smarter.
C. They have rich imagination.
D. They are no longer alone.
10. What will a child with imaginary friends probably do if he is bullied?
A. Escape from the bully.
B. Fight with the bully bravely.
C. Keep silent about being bullied.
D. Ask a parent or a teacher for help.
11. What is the author's attitude towards the effect of imaginary friends?
A. Concerned.
B. Doubtful.
C. Optimistic.
D. Indifferent.

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include responsibilities and unconditional love, whichprecludemothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. This
generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining(保持) and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may ormay not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse; the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always “trump(胜过)” friends.
12. What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. differ.
B. benefit.
C. prevent.
D. change.
13. What can we learn from what Marina said?
A. Best friends will not spend money on her wedding.
B. Best friends will not remind her of important issues in life.
C. Her mother is wiser on account of her age.
D. Her mother is definitely not her best friend.
14. Why can a mother and a daughter build a even closer relationship today?
A. Because they share advanced technology with each other.
B. Because they work together to support the whole family.
C. Because they experience the same values and traditions.
D. Because they have common experience in life and work.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to build a good mother and daughter relationship.
B. A mother-daughter relationship is irreplaceable.
C. Mothers want to be daughters’ friends.
D. A daughter is a mother’s best friend.

The end of British pub culture?
British beer and pubs are famous around the world. Things are changing. However,___16___
For thousands of years, the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, since it is where the people gather to socialize and exchange news. After all, the word “pub” is actually short for “public house”. As a result, British pubs are often old and well preserved.___17___
Many British pubs have old names referring to the monarchs, such as the king’s head or the queen Victoria, but of course this doesn’t mean they are only for kings and queens.___18___On a cold night, the pub’s landlord or landlady can always find a warm place for you by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price.
That’s how it used to be.___19___Economic downturns, governmental “austerity measures” (财政紧缩政策), and cultural changes are causing many pubs to go out of business. People do not have spare money to spend on beer. On top of that, in 2007 smoking was banned in all public indoor spacer including spaces, including pubs, which may also have affected the numbers of customers going to pubs since then.
To save their business, pubs are trying to diversify to attract new customers. Now there are a number of different types of pubs. Besides a “traditional pub”, a “gastro pub” serves higher-quality food than usual.___20___And a “theme pub” caters to specific types of customers, such as sports or karaoke fans.
As you can see, British pubs now offer something for everyone. And with various “save the pub” campaign, there are signs that people are regathering around these new kinds of pubs while supporting the traditional ones to back its great British custom with pride.
A. Don’t British people like drinking beer?
B. Many of them have become historic sites that tourists visit.
C. Is this the end of a great British tradition?
D. A “microbrewery” often has fresher beer than other types of pub.
E. Some pubs are allowed law to stay open after 11 pm.
F. Pubs have always welcomed people from all classes and parts of society.
G. Now there are worrying signs that things are beginning to decline.
