Unit 2
The universal language
Grammar and usage
What is Ellipsis?
Ellipsis is used when we do not want to repeat words or phrases that are obvious. Using ellipsis is an efficient way to make sentences concise.
in short responses, by leaving out the words after the auxiliary verb. -- Do you like music? -- Yes, I do (like music).
in infinitive phrases, in which we leave out words after to. --Will you go with me? --Well, I’d like to (go with you).
2 In some special styles of ellipsis, words are left out to save space and time. These include:
• Signs and labels No smoking (No smoking is allowed here.) • Newspaper headlines Turandot on stage (The opera Turandot is being performed on stage.) • Instructions Do not bend (Do not bend this envelope.)
