Macao
Macao is situated at the west outlet of the Pearl River in the south of Guangdong Province, adjacent to the Zhuhai city, and facing beyond Hong Kong. Its population is over 450,000, in which 97% is Chinese.
Macao used to be called Lotus Island. In 1553 (in Ming Dynasty), the Portuguese entered Macao on the pretext that their cargo was damped and needed drying. In 1557, they settled down there officially. Later in 1840, the Portuguese, having seen the chance of Qing government being defeated by the Great Britain, having followed the British in taking over Hong Hong by force, occupied the whole Macao peninsula forcibly.
On April 13th, 1987, through cordial negotiation between Chinese and Portuguese governments, a Joint Declaration on the remaining Macao problem was signed in Beijing, which announced that China would restore of the excise of sovereignty over Macao on Dec.20th, 1999. Macao would then return to the motherland and become a Special Administrative Region under the jurisdiction of China Centre government.
The industry in Macao has a long history, but moved slowly. In 1970s, its economy was greatly stimulated by the western economic development and particularly influenced by Hong Kong prosperity. Macao then developed some new policies, and made some great achievements in industry and trade. The tourist, building and gambling industries in Macao are highly advanced, and become its economic mainstay. No doubt, as a free trade port, Macao will boom rapidly.。
