15 years spent in the field of education has provided me with treasured moments. One of the most priceless happened when I was teaching second grade, 10 years ago.
In May of the fourth quarter, I decided to 1 something special for the children: A Mother’s Day tea. We put our 2 together to come up with ideas of how to 3 our mothers. We decided to
hold our tea the Friday before Mother’s Day. Each child took home an invitation and I was 4 to see that every mother was planning to attend. I even invited my own mother.
Finally the 5 day arrived. At 1:45 that afternoon, each child lined up at our classroom waiting for the 6 of his or her mom. As it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn’t 7 and he was looking anxious.
I took my 8 by the hand and walked over to Jimmy. “Jimmy,” I said. “I have a bit of problem here and I was wondering if you could 9 . I’m going to be really busy. I was wondering if you could keep my mother company while I’m busy.”
My mom and Jimmy sat at a table with two other mother-and-child 10 . Jimmy served my mom her treats, presented her with the gifts I had made, and pulled out and pushed in her chair, just as we had practised the day before. 11 I looked over, my mom and Jimmy were in 12 conversation.
Now, 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment. Last year, I was at a high school to 13 a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy. When Jimmy made sure we were the last two, he said, “Remember our Mother’s Day 14 we had in second grade? Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too. No one knew my mom didn’t make it!” I 15 my work with a hug from a teenage boy who had probably stopped hugging teachers years ago.

How do young people learn best? This is something I think a lot when I am teaching foreign languages to young people. I often 1 that traditional teaching 2 are hardly effective for young brains to learn a foreign language.
After moving to southern Italy, I was 3 to have had the chance to 4 a private course teaching English to children under 7. I 5 children liked singing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these 6 to help my students 7 English conversation skills. I found some fun and 8 songs online, which they loved very much. I also found the English version of some nursery rhymes(童谣)they once were 9 with. All of them were very entertaining and helpful but 10 could still not have a basic 11 in English.
I wanted these students to be 12 in the language I was teaching and I also wished them to speak it. I was eager to deliver 90% of my lessons in English. 13 , I knew it would be difficult to get them to talk in a foreign language they 14 speak outside our lessons. So I had to 15 a simple yet effective plan.
One day I decided to 16 a dialogue in English and rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases, I got them to chant (反复唱) 17 . I discovered that chanting was a practical way to get students to speak in English-it 18 !
So when teaching English to young people now, I 19 them to make up their own chants to help them remember 20 or complex sentences.

When I was a teenager I was in a group of students who took a trip to Pittsburgh. Being a country boy, I found it 1 just being in such a big city. While most of the students headed for the mall then I decided to tour the streets 2 .It was almost Christmastime and the store windows were filled with 3 displays. I bought several cinnamon sticks(肉桂棒) to ward off (挡住) the 4 while walking and looking at the sights.
At some point, 5 ,the stores became less and less and the bars became more and more. I realized I had crossed into a not so 6 section of town. I saw a small bus stop and decided to sit and take a rest before walking back. The bus stop was just in front of a 7 store and before long an old woman in an old coat came out. She was carrying two large 8 in one hand. Her other hand held a cane that steadied her slow, 9 walk. Her young, dark-haired granddaughter clutched her coat as they 10 their way to the bench.I 11 at them both and we talked a bit about how cold it was before the bus 12 .When it arrived I picked up the old lady’s bags and carried them up the steps. Then I helped her granddaughter up while the lady slowly climbed on behind us I pulled out my 13 cinnamon stick and gave it to the sweet girl while her grandma smiled her 14 to me. I got off the bus and looked up to the window where the little, curly-haired Child of God was waving goodbye to me. Then I started back to meet the other students a little 15 at heart if not in body. As I was 16 the corner, though, a voice called out from an alley. “Hey man! Want to get 17 ?” I smiled and said. “No thanks. I 18 got. ”

Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. They 1 with them lots of waste. The 2 might damage the beauty of the place. The glaciers(冰川) are disappearing, changing the 3 of Kilimanjaro.
Hearing these stories, I’m 4 about the place —other destinations are described as “purer” natural experiences.
However, I soon 5 that much has changed since the days of disturbing reports of 6 among tons of rubbish. I find a 7 mountain, with toilets at camps and along the paths. The environmental challenges are 8 but the efforts made by the Tanzania National Park Authority seem to be 9 .
The best of a Kilimanjaro 10 , in my opinion, isn’t reaching the top. Mountains are 11 as spiritual places by many cultures. This 12 is especially evident on Kilimanjaro as 13 go through five ecosystems(生态系统) in the space of a few kilometers. At the base is a rainforest. It ends abruptly at 3, 000 meters, 14 lands of low growing plants. Further up, the weather 15 — low clouds envelope the mountainsides, which are covered with thick grass. I 16 twelve shades of green from where I stand. Above 4, 000 meters is the highland 17 : gravel(砾石), stones and rocks. 18 you climb into an arctic-like zone with 19 snow and the glaciers that may soon disappear.
Does Kilimanjaro 20 its reputation as a crowded mountain with lines of tourists ruining the atmosphere of peace? I found the opposite to be true.
