At the World Economic Forum last month, President Trump drew claps when he announced the United States would respond to the forum's proposal to plant one trillion(万亿) trees to fight climate change. The trillion-tree idea won wide attention last summer after a study published in the journal Science concluded thatplanting so many trees was “the most effective climate change solution to date”.
If only it were true. But it isn't. Planting trees would slow down the planet's warming, but the only thing that will save us and future generations from paying a huge price in dollars, lives and damage to nature is rapid and considerable reductions in carbon release from fossil fuels, to net zero by 2050.
Focusing on trees as the big solution to climate change is a dangerous diversion(偏离). Worse still, it takes attention away from those responsible for the carbon release that are pushing us toward disaster. For example, in the Netherlands, you can pay Shell an additional 1 euro cent for each liter of regular gasoline you put in your tank, to plant trees to balance the carbon release from your driving. That's clearly no more than disaster slightly delayed. The only way to stop this planet from overheating is through political, economic, technological and social solutions that end the use of fossil fuels.
There is no way that planting trees, even across a global area the size of theUnited States, can absorb the huge amounts of fossil carbon released from industrial societies. Trees do take up carbon from the atmosphere as they grow. But this uptake merely replaces carbon lost when forests were cleared in the first place, usually long ago. Regrowing forests where they once grew can undo some damage done in the past, but even a trillion trees can't store enough carbon to head off dramatic climate changes this century.
In a sharp counter argument to last summer's Paper in Science, Justin Gillis wrote in the same journal in October that the study's findings were inconsistent with the dynamics of the global carbon cycle. He warned that “the claimthat global tree restoration(复原) is our most effective climate solution is simply scientifically incorrect
and dangerously misleading”.

B. A Trillion Trees Come to the Rescue.

In life, once on a path,we tend to follow it,for better or worse. What's sad is that even if it's the latter,we often accept it anyway because we are so used to the way things are that wed don't even recognize that they could be different This is a phenomenon psychologist call functional fixedness.
This classic experiment will give you an idea of howitworks and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap: People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a candle to a wall so that it burns properly.
Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it with melted wax. The psychologists had, of course, arranged it so that neither of these obvious approaches would work. The tacks are too short, and the paraffin (石蜡) doesn't stick to the wall. So how can you complete the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle-holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall. and stand the candle inside it.
To think of that, you have to look beyond the box's usual role as a receptacle just for tacks and re-imagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer to one degree or another from functional fixedness.
The inability to think in new ways affects people in every corner of society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase“frozen thoughts”to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt's eyes, the self- content reliance on such accepted “truths”also made people blind to ideas that didn't fit their worldview, even when there was plenty of evidence for them.
Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence, she said,“It can be found in highly intelligent people.”
8. What does the underlined word“it”in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The experiment.
B. Functional fixedness.
C. The path.
D. The thinking.
9. Which way is hard to think of to complete the task?
A. Tacking the candle to the wall.
B. Fixing the candle with melted wax.
C. Using the tack box as a candle-holder.
D. Lighting the candle tostand it.
10. Which of the following statements will Hannah Arendt agree with?
A. People should question.
B. We should be used to the way things are.
C. People shouldn't accept the idea that doesn't fit their worldview.
D. The smarter people are,the more open to the new things they are.
11. What's the passage mainly about?
A. An interesting experiment
B. A psychological phenomenon.
C. A theory to be proved.
D. The opinion of Hannah Arendt.

Many of us were delighted to learn that a high school senior Kwasi Enin was accepted to all eight Ivy League universities. To our surprise, he wasn't excited as expected, but appeared extra calm. He announced that he would revisit the universities to find the best suitable in music or medicine. He also wanted to compare their financial aid
packages.
Kwasi's success story is rare, but his reaction is not. After the admission letters arrive at home, students have 30 days to really think about what kind of school would help them grow as a person, which school would best prepare them for the future, and at which school they would be happiest. And they also have to think about whether they can afford the school they choose.
But how to answer the questions about which school is the best suitable university? Some young people are attracted to large universities with great school spirit and a list of offerings. But besides those advantages, many of these universities focus on graduate work and research, with undergraduates taught mostly by part-time instructors. Others are attracted to smaller boarding schools with discussion-based classes. But some of these schools will have much limitation for students who want a high-energy city life experience.
Many students today seem to think they should pick the university where they will get the diploma that will help them get the most highly paid job. This is a sad misunderstanding of what a college education should provide.
A good college education should prepare them to overcome any difficulty andthrivein society. It helps them to form the habit of creative mind and spirit that will continue to develop far beyond their university years. So when you choose college, you should consider if it is filled with useful learning to help create new spaces for different possibilities of growth.
12. What can we know about Kwasi Enin from paragraph 1?
A. He was from a very poor family.
B. He would choose the top university.
C. He was too excited to calm himself at the good news.
D. He considered his interests when choosing his university.
13. What can you infer from paragraph 2?
A. Few students can be admitted to university.
B. Many students face the choices like Kwasi.
C. Top universities are the first choice for most students.
D. American students can afford their university by themselves.
14. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 4?
A. Fail
B. Succeed
C. Research
D. Work
15. What should the best university be like according to the text?
A. Very large and have good instructors.
B. Small boarding schools with discussion-based classes.
C. It will offerthe diploma to get the most highly paid job.
D. It will help continue to develop far beyond university years.

Pinty Tailor was a little boy who enjoyed going to school and doing all sorts of things, except for drawing. Using brushes and pencils didn't come easy to Pinty, so his works of drawing didn't end happily, and he'd just give up.
But one day Pinty found a pencil of such lovely color1 s that he couldn't resist, and he tried drawing a circle. As ever, it didn't go well, and he was about to throw the pencil away when his drawing began to speak to him.
“Psst! You aren't going to leave me like this, are you? Come on! The least you can do is draw me a pair of eyes!” said the drawing. Pinty was understandably shocked, but he managed to draw two little spots inside the circle.
“Much better, now I can see myself, " said the circle, looking around at itself. “Arghh! But what have you done to me?!”
“I don't draw very well,” said Pinty, trying to make excuses.
“OK, no problem,” the drawing interrupted him. “I'm sure that if you try again you'll do better. Go on and rub me out!” So Pinty erased the circle and drew another one. Like the first one, it wasn’t very round.
“Hey! You forgot the eyes again! Hmm, I think I'm going to have to teach you how to draw until you can do
me well,” said the circle with its quick little voice.
To Pinty, this didn't seem like a bad idea, and he immediately found himself drawing and erasing circles. The circle wouldn't stop saying “rub this out, but carefully; it hurts,” or “draw me some hair. quickly!” and other funny remarks.
After spending nearly the whole afternoon together, Pinty could already draw the little figure much better than most of his classmates could have. He was enjoying it so much that he didn't want to stop drawing with his crazy new teacher. Before going to bed that night, Pinty gave his new instructor a hearty thank you.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
