When the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.
Her owner Mike Holden panicked and called the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds. Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search.
Three days later, a hurricane(飓风) hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country.
For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken. Then, one day, the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog back.
A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting hopelessly on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy.
The dog had been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)at first but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said ,
“It was a very lucky dog. She survived because
of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added.
It was, as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city.Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.
Ultinatelas Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process, or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
5.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A.To invite authors to guide readers.
B.To encourage people to read and share.
C.To involve people in community service.
D.To promote the friendship between cities.
6.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?
A.They had little interest in reading.
B.They were too busy to read a book.
C.They came from many different backgrounds
D.They lacked support from the local government
7.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?
A.In large communities with little sense of unity.
B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.
C.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.
D.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.
8.According to Nancy, the degree of students of the project is judged by________. A.the careful selection of a proper book
B.the growing popularity of the writers
C.the number of people who benefit from reading.
D.the number of books that each person reads.
Chinese New Year is approaching and preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.
London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is a perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns (灯笼), previous years have seen shows with acrobatics (杂技), martial arts (武术), dance and opera nearby.
San Francisco
San Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. With an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.
Mauritius
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional Lion dances through the streets.

China is a country on the move—especially around its Lunar New Year holiday. This year, the holiday crush(客流量) promises to be even heavier than before.
Government officials estimate that Chinese people will take to the air, roads and railways 3.62 billion times over a 40-day period around the nation's most important holiday this year as people push their way home for family gatherings or to satisfy their new-found passion for travel.
Getting tickets to all those would-be travelers is a discounting challenge that annually tries patience. And it is the railway system that routinely is most unable to cope. Railways are the transport of choice for low-cost long-distance travel, and that's where the ticketing system routinely falls down.
Much of the criticism has, focused on the railway's online purchasing system, which has been unable to keep pace with the huge demand and also failed to stop scalpers(票贩子)from ending up with many of the hard-to-find tickets.
While insisting that online sales were the fairest way to get tickets for travelers, railway officials told reporters that the public need to be patient. Efforts were being made to provide online identity checks that would reduce the ticket scalping problems. While officials had little good news for rail passengers, they did manage to bring a few smiles to those traveling by car as the country's extremely expensive highway tolls (通行费)will be free of charge for the period of the official holiday.
12.Which of the following words can replace the underlined word "discounting" in Paragraph 3?

Success is so much more than just money or fame.36.If you want to have a successful life, if you want to create a life that makes you feel passionate to be alive, here are the three tings you need to focus on.
Believe In Yourself
If you don’t believe in yourself, how do you expect other people to?
If you don’t believe that you can have the life you desire, if you don’t believe that you can achieve all that you are setting out to achieve, it is going to be very difficult to create a successful life.37.It also helps you to take a leap of faith when it comes to going after what it is that you truly desire.
38.
If your intention is simply rooted in money and fame, chances are you are never going to truly feel successful. Realize You Are Already Successful
Success is all around you and flows through you and the more you can welcome that into your life, the more you will Mart to feel it.
Being grateful for the tiniest successes in life will also help you to create more and more success. 40.The truth is that you are already successful and once you realize this, there is no stopping what you can do.
A. Know Your Intention.
B. Realize your dream.
C. When you believe in yourself, it fuels your creativity, your ambitions and your motivation to do things.
D. Success is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.
E. For a truly successful life, your intention has to be rooted in your purpose, in your passions and in what feels good to you.

W(when, where, who, why, what)和1个H(how),不过不是每篇都会完整地交待六个要素。
根据文章的第一段可知,Judy是在追赶一只羊的时候掉落了悬崖,因此选的是when she was running after a sheep。
It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water. Luck plays an important role in Judy's survival.
