Now, when you go to acertain shopping mall, you can enjoy itsfree Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. In fact, all these can be seen as the basic parts of a smart city. The idea of a smart city was brought up by US company IBM in 2010. Generally, a smart city is a city that uses digital technologies such as the Internet to improve city planning, save money and resources, and make our life convenient. How smart can a city be? Here are great examples that we can learn from.In 2009, Dubuque became the first smart city in the US. The city used smart water meters to take the place of traditional water meters.

(better)2.

Translate the underlined sentences in the following passage from English into Chinese. Thanks to the work of many scientists, we are now clear that many of the important earthquake regions are places where the movements of plates are happening and therefore, it becomes much easier to look for signs that an earthquake is coming soon. (1) In the past few years, there has been great excitement about the possibility of finding out when earthquakes are going to happen by measuring changes in the rocks, but we are still not sure whether this can be the basis for an efficient means of predicting earthquakes. But further research on this subject may suggest ways in which earthquakes can be predicted and. prevented. (2) One idea is that it might be possible to reduce the pressures that have built up in rocks by pumping in water at high pressure, thus producing a wet surface on which the two opposite side of the fault can slide (move smoothly). Now the question is that nobody is quite sure what the results might be.Ⅱ.Translate the following sentences into English with the words or expressions given in the brackets.1.

1:“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.“Have a nice day. Next!” this version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out of the door. The words e out in the same tone (腔调)with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business. The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say. “oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day!” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and fortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.【小题1】How does the author understand Maxie’s word?【小题2】What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?【小题3】According to the last paragraph, people say “Have a good day” __________【小题4】What is the best title of the passage?A、Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.B、Maxie really wishes the author a good day.C、Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.D、Maxie really worries about the author’s security.2:If you have mice in your house, you’re not alone. 【小题1】Having mice doesn’t mean your house is dirty. It is one of the challenges of every house owner. When we are trying to catch a mouse, the first thing that es to our mind is a mouse trap. 【小题2】Mice travel along walls for safety. Don’t touch the trap too much because you will leave your smell on it.【小题3】Usually, mice will not visit your house when they hear there is a cat inside. It will also help you fight against the mice.Be careful when using poison (毒药) to kill the mice. 【小题4】It is dangerous because they may touch your food and pollute it.Mice can get into the houses through tiny holes. The best way to have a mouse-free house is to close any possible entry(入口).【小题5】If there is nothing there for them to eat, they won’t possibly stay.E. Don’t leave even a small piece of food outside.F. It will kill them, but you may not be able to find the dead mice.G. Put a small piece of cheese under the trap, and put it near the wall.A、Keep a cat as a pet in your houseB、Cheese is the favorite food of mice.C、Every house may have mice for some reason.D、Leave the poison out of your children’s reach.3:Directions: Read the following passage. plete the diagram by using the information for the passage.Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer. For many the idea of one day having your dream home is not buying a bigger home, but a home that you have built by yourself. A house that is unique and fit for your tastes and your lifestyle. It sounds great but where do you begin to design your dream home? Here is a quick guide that can help you make your dreams e true. The first step is to get an idea of what type of home you want. You can get inspiration from others. Drive around t o neighborhoods that have the styles of homes that you like and take pictures. Y ou can also cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers, or print-out pictures you find on the Internet. The next step will be to make two lists of items for yourself. The first list will be those items or features that you feel your new home must have, such as granite (花岗岩) counter tops or a hot water heater. The second list will be those items or features that are on your wish list like a fireplace or slate (石板) floors. At this point you will probably have a good idea what your dream home will look like, so you will need to seeksome professional help. You will need to hire an architect to put your ideas down on paper. You may need to interview a few different architects to find one that you are fortable with. Make sure whomever you choose to make the final drawings has a full understanding of local building codes and zoning by-laws (地区议事程序).In any case your final plan will need to be approved by the city and a building permit must be obtained before any construction can begin. It is time to look for a contractor (承包人). Whichever way you do it, be sure you are fortable with your contractor and you have gotten references from his past clients (客户). Remember the more homework you do in the beginning, the more enjoyable the process will be.Title: 71____________ 72____________From otherpeople73_______________From media: Internet, newspaper, etc4:If I have to choose three critical factors in achieving success in my career, these would be my choices—belief, action and discipline.BeliefIn order to achieve success in your career, you have to first believe. You need to believe that you can achieve it. You need to have faith in your goals and your path to success. Once your mind is convinced that you can do it, everything is possible. Belief is the “mind and heart” part of the three critical success factors.ActionNothing moves until you do something. Believing alone is not going to achieve anything. It must be followed up with concrete action. Your plan for career success is nothing unless you act upon it wholeheartedly. When you act upon what you believe, there is focus. And there is energy. That energy propels (drive forward) you to greater heights. Action is the “hands and legs” part of the three critical success factors.Discipline(自制力)Action in itself is not enough to increase the chances of success. But disciplined action would do that. One of the main reasons why people fail is that there is no discipline in their action. They give themselves excuses when they cannot consistently go ahead with their plans. You need some form of sacrifice(牺牲)if you want to achieve success in your career. That sacrifice takes discipline. Discipline also ensures that you can be persistent(坚持的), especially when you’re faced with challenges after challenges in your journey to success. Discipline is the “untiring, determined hands and legs” part of the three critical success factors. When what you think, feel and do bee one, there is nothing that can stop you from achieving career success5:Choosing the right university for you is a big decision with many factors to consider. The institution that you choose will not only be the one that ensures your academic goals, but it will also be where you will live, learn, play sports, socialize and work for several years. Therefore, before you start filling out those university application forms, take a step back and consider the manyvariables that affect the “fit” of a university to your unique personality and educational goals. Take a look at the following factors, and decide which ones mean the most to you.Consider your educational goals. You will discover that different schools are more recognized or progressive in your chosen field of study than others. For this reason, talk to advisors, professionals in your field, or go to clubs organized by the alumni(校友). When you check out school ranking for your major, you may find that your first choice is not really a match, while another fits perfectly.Consider costs. It will be no surprise to you at this point that not all schools cost the same. Some of the more famous schools are so because they are difficult to get into and difficult to pay for. Don’t let this necessarily stop you. His father was an electric engineer and his mother was a performing pianist. His sister, Anne Spielberg, became a screenwriter who wrote the stories for many famous films.Stephen had always wanted to be a director ever since he was a young boy. When he was just 13 years old, he made a 40-minute film. It won a local petition. Three years later, he produced a film called Firelight, which made one hundred dollars’profit at the cinema in his hometown. Many of the ideas from this film were later used for one of his most famous films called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. When he was 18 years old, he wanted to go to film school so that he could improve his skills and bee an even better director. Unluckily, he was unsuccessful in getting a place at this school so he went to a university in California to study English. Even though he had failed to get into the school he wanted to go to, he didn’t let this stop him following his dream to bee a great director.Stephen Spielberg has directed many films since his first major film in 1976. He now owns many different businesses, most of which are involved in the film industry.

ALETTER FROM OUR PUBLISHERA.Book TVB.The Los Angeles TimesC.Natural History MuseumD.Los Angeles Public Library2.How are the best book prize chosen?A.By a group of experts.B.By a vote of the author.C.By the reading public.D.By festival sponsors.3.What is true about tickets to the festival?A.They are only for published authors.B.They include transport to each event.location.C.They can only be applied for online.D.They can be purchased at the eventBIn 1800, only three percent of the world’s population lived in cities. Only one city —Beijing— had a population of over a million. Most people lived in rural areas, and never saw a city in their lives. In 1900, just a hundred years later, roughly 150 million people lived incities, and the world’s ten largest cities all had populations exceeding one million. By 2000, the number of city dwellers exceeded three billion; and in 2008, the world's population crossed a tipping point — more than half of the people on Earth lived in cities. By 2050, that could increase to over two-thirds. Clearly, humans have become an urban species. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people viewed cities negatively — crowded, dirty environments full of disease and crime. They feared that as cities got bigger, living conditions would worsen. In recent decades, however, attitudes have changed. Many experts now think urbanization (城市化) is good news, offering solutions to the problems of Earth’s growing population.Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, author of The Victory of the Cir, is one such person. Glaeser argues that cities are very productive because “the absence of space between people” reduces the cost of transporting goods, people, and ideas. While the flow of goods has always been important to cities, what is most important today is the flow of ideas. Successful cities enable people to learn from each other easily, and attract and reward smart people with higher wages.Another urbanization supporter is environmentalist Stewart Brand. Brand believes cities help the environment because they allow haft of the world’s population to live on about four percent of the land. This leaves more space for open country, such as farmland. City dwellers also have less impact per person on the environment than people in the countryside. Their roads, sewers, and power lines need fewer resources to build and operate. City apartments require less energy to heat, cool, and light. Most importantly, people in cities drive less so they produce fewer greenhouse gases per person. So it’s a mistake to see urbanization as evil; it’s a natural part of development. The challenge is how to manage the growth.4. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. The history of modern cities.B. Changes taking place within cities.C. How cities have grown over time.D. Why modern cities are changing.5. How have experts’ attitudes towards cities changed in recent decades?A. They now view the weaknesses as strengths.B. They no longer see city- living asattractive.C. They accept city life in spite of its problems.D. They think city- living provides more benefits.6. Which of the following would Edward Glaeser agree with?A. Cities provide more economicopportunities.B. City people get along better with eachother.C. Over-crowded cities result in problems.D. Cities limit the flow of ideas.7. According to Paragraph 4, what would be the result of moving people out of cities?A. Economic production would be reduced.B. There would be less farmland available.C. People would travel less frequently.D. House values would fall greatly.CIt was December 25, 1914, only months into World W arⅠ. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socialising with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front.German troops held up Christmas trees with signs, “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot. By March 1915 the socialising movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce (休战). On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Boston played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it described. You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the potential we have as humans, and contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different.8. The soldiers began socialising with the enemy because ________.A. they couldn’t bear the meaninglessB. it was the best way to avoid being killed killingbackgroundsC. they feared that they would be caughtD. their enemies were from similar9. How did the generals finally put an end to the soldiers’ socialising?A. They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.B. They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.C. They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.D. They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.10. The underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.A. satisfiedB. shockedC. amusedD. confused11. The author uses the story of the soldiers to imply that human beings ________.A. are not trustworthy under stressB. are naturally aggressive and war-likeself-interestC. are basically caring and kindheartedD. will always do what is in their ownDEarlier this year, the social media website Facebook announced that it would work with several news organization — including The New York Times, The Guardian, and the BBC— to place newsstories directly into users’ personal Facebook webpage. Stories published using Facebook Instant will load more quickly and keep the style of the original publisher, who will keep all the advertising income the stories earn — at least for now. The deal shows how important social, media has become to news organisations, and is a clear sign of how the world of news is changing — and has been for a while. When Google News began in 2002, many saw it as the death of the newspaper. It had no human editor. Instead Google used, and still uses, a secret computer program that selects and displays news stories according to the reader’s personal interests. More recently, Associated Press and Yahoo!have been punishing computer-written articles. Both use special software to automatically produce stories about company financial results and sports reports — areas where the quality of writing is felt to be of secondary importance to the accuracy of the data.Should we be worried about such developments? I think we should. One concern is that Facebook, Google and other social media websites see journalism as a sideline, a way of putting people in front of advertisements. It isn’t their primary function — so if it stops making them lots of money, they're likely to stop doing it.There’s also a concern that computer-written articles are not actually journalism at all, because what a human news team produces is actually quite complex. A well-written news story puts information in context, offers a voice to each side of an argument and brings the public new knowledge.Though economics and speed of delivery mean readers will probably choose a computer-written story over a carefully shaped article — at least for daily news — I don't think the computers will be writing any in-depth articles for a while yet.12.What is the main purpose of the article?A. To report on a new computer service offered by Facebook..B. To advise readers against reading computer-written news.C. To express concern about recent trends in online news.D. To describe the process of online news reporting.13. Computer-written news reports have so far focused on sports and finance because ________.A. these are the most popular topics for online readersB. there are fewer journalists specialising in these areasC. information on these topics is more easily availableD. writing style is less important than accuracy in these areas14. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Journalism.B. Advertising.C. Facebook.D. Business.15. In Paragraph 4, which of the following is mentioned as a characteristic of a well-written news article?B. The author's opinion is clear.A. The information presented isup-to-date.D. The language used is vivid.C. Different views on the topic arepresented.
