own ideas of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily.Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorableenvironments in which to express these abilities,it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly. For some people, simply being able to live their life with the least misery and suffering is considered a success.Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of him and accepted by his family and his society. On the other hand,it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and conside r themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success.Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one ha s selfcconfidence it would be unfortunate to set one’s goals at a too low level of achievement.A wise man once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration (挫败) with his own professional success,“You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling.Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park or riding the subway downtown.” The man added,“You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.”1.According to the first paragraph, what is implied as basics in achieving success?A.Ability and goals.B.Goals and determination.C.Ability and environments.D.Goals and environments.2.Some rich people consider themselves unsuccessful because________.A.their life is busy and miserableB.they haven’t reached their own standardsC.they set their goals at a too low levelD.they are not rich in material possessions3.From the last paragraph we can tell that________.A.success means achieving great goalsB.success comes from setting great goalsC.success means efforts and favorites pay offD.success has nothing to do with the distance of your travelB(2013·长沙二模) Handling a wad of cash may be as good at killing pain than ibuprofen (布洛芬) or aspirin,a new study suggests.Researchers at the University of Minnesota carried out a series of studies which showed those who counted money before taking part in an experiment where they were subjected to low levels of pain felt less discomfort than those who did not. It’s thought that fondling notes and coins helps ward off pain by boosting feelings ofselfworth and selfsufficiency.Previous studies have shown those with a greater sense of selfworth may be more likely to bear pain.Britain spends at least £500 million a year on overthecounter painkilling pills and the figure is increasing every year. But scientists remain puzzled by why some people appear to feel pain more easily than others. In the latest study,a group of students were asked to count out a wad of cash consisting of 80 onehundred dollar bills,or just 80 slips of blank paper. They had been told researchers w ere simply testing their dexterity (熟练) in handling the notes. Each volunteer was then asked to dip their hands into a bowl of very hot water,to see how painful they found it and how long they could last. The results, published in a recent edition of the journal Psychological Science, showed those who had handled money reported less pain and lasted longer. The results support other studies highlighting how the brain can be tuned to fight off pain without the use of pills.A University of Los Angeles team of scientists found just looking at a photograph of a loved one can also be a powerful form of pain relief. They recommended anyone visiting hospital for painful tests or examinations should bring a picture to help them cope. And patien ts who have had major surgery, such as a knee or hip replacement, can halve the amount of painkilling medicine they need simply by stroking a pet, according to tests at Loyola University in Chicago.4.Handling money can prevent pain because ________.A.we are confident in our usefulnessB.we can afford the expenses of the treatmentC.we can do everything with the moneyD.we can’t live without money5.The phrase “overthecounter painkilling pills” refer to pills________.A.that can be obtained outside the drug storeB.that can be bought without a prescriptionC.that are placed on the counter of the storeD.that are purchased with a written order from a doctor6.Which of the following may least kill pain?A.Counting out a wad of cashes.B.Looking at the picture of a loved one.C.Handling a group of blank paper.D.Walking a pet.7.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A.Money Makes Something Impossible PossibleB.Money Has a Magic Power in Treating PatientsC.Money Brings Comfort to Pain SuffersD.Money Kills Pains Better than Aspirin8.We can infer that the passage is________.A.a research report on the In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老) treated the message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.Shades of that spirit spread ove r today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked lightheartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, a bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of headcutting! It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered(传递). Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and big winners do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising his patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way.A boss informing an employee he fails to get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toasted beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveler or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces.Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh,that’s all right. I’ll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轰炸的) person is sure to have.【解题导语】本文主要讲述当我们要告诉别人不好的消息的时候,要注意说话的方式和语气,还要带有同情心。

课时作业19Body languageⅠ.阅读理解AI want to talk about a soldier. I saw him yesterday as my husband and I were enjoying a wonderful lunch in the cave-like dining room of an old hotel. It is hard to imagine being fortable in a room that probably seats a thousand, but the real magic of the place is its wonderful setting. Every corner is a wood and stone masterpiece, with high glass windows that look out to the huge cliffs of the valley.A man entered with his family and took a seat. He wasn't in uniform, but he walked with the dignity of a soldier, and a slight limp (瘸). My suspicion was confirmed when he removed his hat and placed it on the table where I could see it. Embroidered (绣) on the cap were the words:“Iwo Jima Survivor”.As they were waiting for lunch, the others talking happily, this gentleman was staring out of the window. He was content to be left out of the conversation and allowed to take in the wonderful and impressive view of the waterfall.I watched him, and imagined how much horror he had seen in the war. What losses did he suffer, and how many friends did he lose? What he had witnessed should have given him a good reason to lose faith in the world. Yet this tired soldier was smiling at the sky, at the sun and the roaring of the waterfall. Somehow, after everything, the world was still beautiful to him.I walked over to him and said, “Excuse me, sir. I'm sorry to interrupt, but I saw your hat, and I just wanted to say thank you for serving.”He looked up at me, surprised, and said proudly, “You're wele, and thank you, too.”I told him I would go home and tell my children about this experience that I'd met him.本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者和丈夫在一家看起来像洞穴似的饭店用餐时,见到了一位没穿制服但极具军人气质的瘸腿士兵。

Unit 4 Body languageⅠ.阅读理解A(2020·安徽省部分重点中学高三联考) Remember Vitaminwater's “ free of rolling screens for a year” challenge that people to be free from smart phones for a whole year will win $100,000? Well, Elana Mugdan,a New York woman, has been into it for eight months, and just four months away from claiming the grand prize.Vitaminwater made news headlines last December when it announced its unique challenge. Thousands of people applied to be chosen as the perfect candidate to spend a year without touching their smart phones, but in the end, the only person who got to try and survived for an entire year without a handheld smart phone was Elana Mugdan, a 29year old fiction writer from Queens, New York. Eight months into the challenge, she claims,it has been a free and eye opening experience that shows her just how dependent she becomes on her smart phone. Even though there are times when she misses her handheld smart phone, she plans to go on living without it even after the challenge ends, because she really doesn't want to go back to days when she overused it, wasted time, stayed up all hours of the night on it,and was obsessed_with social media. But not having access to her smart phone really made certain situations a lot harder than she could have imagined them before.“Many people did me a favor. However, once, I almost get stranded (被滞留的) in the Sea Tac Airport because the phone number I'd written down was wrong, and I had no way of referrng to the right one, no way of calling a cab, and no one in the state who could help me,” the young writer said.Another time, her car's “ check engine” light turned on while she was driving in an unfamiliar area at night. She couldn't use her phone's GPS, or even check what the light meant online or find a nearby car repair shop. But she learned to overcome these situations. And now she claims the last eight months of phone free life havebeen one of the best adventures of her life and that she'll keep it for another four months.语篇解读本文是一篇记叙文。

Vitamin B could help lessen the effects of the most dangerous type of air pollution, according to a new study published recently. In the first study of its kind, a team of international researchers looked at the damage caused by one of the pollutants that have the most severe impact on health: PM2.5.Particulate matter, or PM, is a type of air pollutant consisting of small particles of different sizes. PM2.5 has a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These particles are so small that they can go into our respiratory system(呼吸系统), resulting in lung and systemic inflammation(炎症) and stress. The team found that something as simple as a daily vitamin B supplement could potentially reduce the impact of the tiny particles on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small. For this study, 10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo(安慰剂) to check their responses. The group then took another placebo for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1,000 cars pass every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygentype” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a B vitamin supplement daily made up of 2.5 mg of folic acid, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 1 mg of vitamin B12. B6 can be found in liver, chicken and nuts, and B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals. The researchers found that four weeks of B vitamin supplements reduced the damage of PM2.5 exposure by 28%-76%. The results highlight how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

必修4 Unit 4 Body language李仕才一、阅读理解AThe biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called the Scrubba Wash Bag, that worry may be a thine of the past. The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag's design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light. Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention —dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Bag solves that problem. In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What's even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time. The best part is that the 99dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it's not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Bag, wandering through foreign cities, searching for a laundry, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了Scrubba Wash Bag的产生背景和功能。

But there are plenty of concerns that this kind of practice could have negative effects on kids. Virginia Shiller, a clinical psychologist, says that it's worth experimenting with cash encouragements but that tying them to success on a test is not a worthwhile goal. “I'd rather see rewards based on effort and responsibility — things that will lead to success in life,” she says. For its part, the Seminole County Public Schools system in Florida plans to continue its report card encouragement program through the rest of the school year. The local McDonald's restaurants help the poor district by paying the $1,600 cost of printing the report card. Regina Klaers, the district spokeswoman, says most parents don't seem bothered by the Happy Meals rewards. “There are many ways we try to urge students to do well, and sometimes it's through the stomach, and sometimes it's the probability of students winning a car,” she says. “One size doesn't fit all.”【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文,主要论述了物质奖励对学生的成绩是否有促进作用。

Each one of these different types of ways of communicating is obviously different between men and women. Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men; this is due to the fact that women tend to be interrupted more often than men are, and also have the ability to speak more clearly, precisely, and more quickly than men. In one study it was found that women spoke for an average of three minutes describing a painting, as opposed to the thirteenminute average it took men to describe it.Men and women also tend to have a very different n onverbal way of communicating, which can also make it very hard for one another to understand what the opposite sex is trying to say. Men's body language is much more reserved when they are talking to women. Men tend not to make as much eye contact and they generally stay farther away from women when talking to them. Men avoid other people's body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom. Women are by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation is going somewhere or just stuck in neutral. After learning about our styles of communicating with each other, I have decided that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same “language”? The little games men and womenplay with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex, “I wonder if there's something there?” would no longer exist.【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了男性和女性因性别差异而导致在沟通方式上也有所不同的现象。
