大学英语1(专科)第一学期期末试题

专科大学英语1第一学期期末考试(A卷)Part II Reading Comprehension(30 %) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneScience is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, who review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.”In August 1996, NASA announced the discovery in Antarctica of a meteorite(流星)from Mars that might contain evidence of ancient life on another world. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Some concluded that the “evidence of life” was mostly contamination from Antarctic ice or that there was nothing organic at all in the rock. Was this a failure of science, as some news reports trumpeted? No! It was a good example of the scientific method working the way it is supposed to. Scientists spend years on research, announce their findings, and these findings are examined by other scientists. That’s how we learn. Like climbing a mountain, we struggle up three feet and fall back two. It’s a process filled with disappointments and reverses, but somehow we keep moving ahead.21. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to state that ____________.A) most scientific discoveries are not reliableB) mass media is misleading because it looks at the research results onlyC) scientific research is a process filled with reverses and requires slow and patientworkD) repeated experiments are necessary before medicine can be used in patients22. Publication of a scientific finding signifies __________.A) a challenge to fellow scientists to prove it wrongB) the end of a processC) the beginning of a new scientific inquiryD) the soundness of the result23. Einstein’s words are used to show that he thought___________.A) experiments have proved him rightB) scientists do not need so many experimentsC) one experiment is not enough to prove him wrong.D) scientific ideas are never free from challenge24. NASA’s announcement of the discovery of evidence of ancient life on Mars shows _________.A) the way human beings learn about natureB) the failure of the scientific methodC) the fruitlessness of human search for life on another worldD) the excitement brought by scientific findings25. It can be inferred from the passage that the media is interested in __________.A) the process of scientific researchB) the results of scientific researchC) the scientists who do the researchD) the effects of scientific research on human lifePassage TwoNormally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in studentaffairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.26. Normally a student would at least attend __________classes each week.A) 36B) 12C) 20D) 1527. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed _______.A) to live in a different universityB) to take a particular course in a different universityC) to live at home and drive to classesD) to get two degrees from two different universities28. American university students are usually under pressure of work because_________.A) their academic performance will affect their future careersB) they are heavily involved in student affairsC) they have to observe university disciplineD) they want to run for positions of authority29.Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probablybecause_________.A) they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studyB) they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC) such positions help them get better jobsD) such positions are usually well paid30. The student organizations seem to be effective in _________.A) dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB) ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC) evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a courtD) keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesPassage ThreeDoreen Sykora is now a junior at Mcgill University. She had a difficult time when she first began college. She said, “I was always well prepared for my examinations. But I would go in to class to take the exam, and I would fall apart. I could not answer the questions correctly-----even though I knew the answers! I would just blank out because of nervousness and fear.” Hitoshi Sakamoto, an anthropology student at Temple University in Tokyo reports similar experiences. These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is stressed about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the severe tension and nervousness. Now there are special university courses to help students. In these courses, advisors and psychologists try to help students by teaching them to manage test anxiety. Such a course helps students learn to live with stress and not fail because of it. First students take a practice test to measure their worry level. If the tests show that their stress level is high, the students can take a short course to manage the fear. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. They get training to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work more easily. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.Doreen Sykora saw immediate results after taking such a course. She now has enthusiasm about the relaxation methods. “Mostly, what I do is imagine myself in a very calm place. Then I imagine myself picking up a pencil. I move slowly and carefully. I breathe easily and let all the tension out. With each breath, more worry leaves me. It really works too. My grades have improved greatly! I’m really doing well at McGill now. This relaxation method works not only on examinations, but it has improved the rest of my life as well.”For Hitoshi in Tokyo, the results were much the same. He is enjoying school a lot more and learning more.31. Doreen Sykora and Hitoshi Sakamoto were filled with nervousness and fear duringexaminations because they were__________.A) not ready and unaware of the answersB) physically so weak that they fell apartC) subject to test anxietyD) unable to write or think clearly32. The higher the students’ worry level is, __________.A) the less calm and relaxing they areB) the more difficult they will be trained to manage fearC) the more stressed and tense they areD) the longer courses they will take to manage fear33. What’s the purpose of some special university student-help courses?A) To help students to reduce test anxiety.B) To show a stress level experienced by students.C) To learn more knowledge about test anxiety.D) To have a better understanding of test anxiety.34. It offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits that contribute to an overall sense of well-being. In this essay, we will explore the importance of regular exercise and its positive impact on our lives.Firstly, regular exercise plays a vital role in improving our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as running, swimming, or cycling helps to strengthen our muscles and bones. It also enhances cardiovascular fitness, leading to a reduced risk of heart diseases and other chronic conditions. Furthermore, exercise promotes weight management and helps to prevent obesity, a growing problem in modern society. In addition to physical health, exercise greatly contributes to our mental well-being. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones, which elevate our mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Regular exercise can also alleviate symptoms of depression and improve overall cognitive function. It provides an opportunity for self-reflection and relaxation, acting as a positive outlet for coping with life's challenges.Furthermore, exercise offers a platform for social interaction, which is crucial for our overall well-being. Participating in group activities, such as team sports or fitness classes, allows us to connect with others who share similar interests. These social interactions foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moreover, exercise can serve as a bonding activity among friends, family members, or colleagues, leading to stronger relationships and increased social support. To conclude, regular exercise is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. It not only improves physical health and fitness but also enhances mental well-being and fosters social connections. Incorporating exercise into our daily routines should be a priority for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. So, let's make a commitment to prioritize our health and embrace regular exercise for a happier and healthier future.。

What they do is to select young people who have potential(潜能)and who can be trained. They then give the young people the kinds of skills that will make them suitable employees for the company. In other words, they adjust their training to their particular needs. One recently employed graduate says that she is receiving a great deal of valuable training from the company. “This means that I will be a loyal employee,” she says, “And it also means that the company will want to keep me. I am an important investment for them. So the policy is a good one because it benefits both the employer and the employee.”Recently, however, attitudes towards lifelong employment are beginning to change. Employees are slowly beginning to accept the idea that lifelong employment is not always in their best interest and that changing firms can have career advantages.31. The purpose of lifelong employment is to __________.A. adjust the needs of the company to its employeesB. make employees loyal to their companyC. select the best skilled young employeesD. keep the skilled staff satisfied32. By training its employees, a company can make them _________.A. do their work more easilyB. more interested in their workC. willing to invest money into the countryD. posses the necessary qualities for the job33. Talking about the training she has received, a recently employed graduate has the view that _________.A. it is still well-received by all the staff members todayB. it is valuable to the employer and the employeesC. it is helpful for attracting young employeesD. it is both useful and interesting34. Attitudes towards lifelong employment are changing because _________.A. job changes have career advantages.B. it’s boring to work in only one company.C. only the employer benefits from such employment.D. stable employment seldom offers better opportunities35. The passage is mainly about ___________.A. lifelong training of employeesB. policies of lifelong employmentC. attitudes towards lifelong employmentD. employers’ interest in lifelong employment Passage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:People today are still talking about the generation gap(代沟). Some parents complain that their children do not show them proper respect, while children complain that their parents do not understand them at all. What has gone wrong? Why has the generation gap appeared? One important cause is that young people want to choose style. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to many people that their parents like, and often to continue the family occupation.Parents often expect their children to do better than they do, to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the high wishes that parents place on their children are another cause of the generation gap. Finally, the high speed of social changes deepens the gap. In a traditional culture, people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society today the knowledge of lifetime may be out of use overnight(隔夜).36. According to the passage, children today expect their parents to _________.A. give them more independenceB. choose a good job for themC. live together with themD. make more money37. Parents often hope that their children will ________.A. make as much money as they doB. be more successful than they areC. choose jobs according to their own willD. avoid doing what their parents can’t do38. The generation gap has become wider than before because of ________.A. the increasing dependence of children on parentsB. the influence of traditional culture on childrenC. the rapid changes of modern societyD. the missing of lifelong occupation39. In today’s society, the knowledge of a lifetime _________.A. is still very much valuedB. becomes out of date quicklyC. is essential for continuing family occupationD. helps the young generation to find a better job40. A proper title for this passage would be ____________.A. Parents’ Viewpoints On Generation GapB. Relationship Between Family MembersC. Generation Gap Between the Young and the OldD. Difference Between Traditional Culture and Modern KnowledgePassage ThreeQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risks of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship owner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the father knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family the poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire, nor every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contributions are known as “insured” and those who control the pool of contributions as “insurer”.Not all risks lend themselves to being covered by insurance. Broadly speaking, the ordinary risks of business cannot be covered. The risk that buyers will not buy goods at the prices offered is not a kind that can be estimated in numbers and risks can only be insured against if they can be estimated. The legal basis of all insurance is the “policy”. This is a printed form of contract on thick paper of the best quality. It states that in return for regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the “premium”, which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens.41. Why does the writer mention the father in the passage?A)The writer uses the father as an example to illustrate his point.B)The writer believes the father knows better than the mother.C)The writer wants to persuade the father to buy insurance.D)The writer wishes to set an example for fathers.42. Which of the following can be covered by insurance?A)All risks of business. B)All houses damaged by fire.C)Goods with clearly marked prices. D)Things whose values can be estimated.43. What do insurers firmly believe?A)People don’t like to spend their money.B)No one can avoid any risks.C)Almost all people trust insurance. D)Most people like to help others.44. What does “premium” (Para.3)most probably mean in the passage?A)The money paid by the insured. B)A printed form of contract.C)The money paid for the loss. D)The contributions of insurers.45. What is the main idea of the passage?A)Insurance is a way of sharing risks among people. B)Insurance has a solid legal basis. C)Only a few people suffer loss in their daily life. D)Insurance is not worth buying.46.We should do something _______ just talking about it.47. After hard work, we usually ______ by going to the movies at the weekend.48. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD. You should decide on the best choice and then write the corresponding letter onthe Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage. You probably know about the Titanic, but it was actually just one of three state-of-the-art (先进的) ocean ships back in the day. The Olympic class ships were built by the Harland & Wolff ship makers in Northern Ireland for the White Star Line company. The Olympic class included the Olympic, the Britannic and the Titanic. What you may not know is that the Titanic wasn’t even the flagship of this class. All in all, the Olympic class ships were marvels of sea engineering, but they seemed cursed to suffer disastrous fates. The Olympic launched first in 1910, followed by the Titanic in 1911, and lastly the Britannic in 1914. The ships had nine decks, and White Star Line decided to focus on making them the most luxurious ships on the water.Stretching 269.13 meters, the Olympic class ships were wonders of naval technology, and everyone thought that they would continue to be so for quite some time. However, all suffered terrible accidents on the open seas. The Olympic got wrecked before the Titanic did, but it was the only one to survive and maintain a successful career of 24 years. The Titanic was the first to sink after famously hitting a huge iceberg in 1912. Following this disaster, the Britannic hit a naval mine in 1916 and subsequently sank as well. Each ship was coal-powered by several boilers constantly kept running by exhausted crews below deck. Most recognizable of the ship designs are the ship’s smoke stacks, but the fourth stack was actually just artistic in nature and served no functional purpose. While two of these ships sank, they were all designed with double hulls (船体) believed to make them “unsinkable”, perhaps a mistaken idea that led to the Titanic’s and the Britannic’s tragic end.The Olympic suffered two crashes with other ships and went on to serve as a hospital ship and troop transport in World War I. Eventually, she was taken out of service in 1935, ending the era of the luxurious Olympic class ocean liners.56. What does the passage say about the three Olympic class ships?A) They performed marvelously on the sea.B) They could all break the ice in their way.C) They all experienced terrible misfortunes.D) They were models of modern engineering.57. What did White Star Line have in mind when it purchased the three ships?A) Their capacity of sailing across all waters.B) The utmost comfort passengers could enjoy.C) Their ability to survive disasters of any kind.D) The long voyages they were able to undertake.58. What is said about the fourth stack of the ships?A) It was a mere piece of decoration.B) It was the work of a famous artist.C) It was designed to let out extra smoke.D) It was easily identifiable from afar.59. What might have led to the tragic end of the Titanic and the Britannic?A) Their unscientific designs.B) Their captains’ misjudgment.C) The assumption that they were built with the latest technology.D) The belief that they could never sink with a double-layer body.60. What happened to the ship Olympic in the end?A) She was used to carry troops.B) She was sunk in World War I.C) She was converted into a hospital ship.D) She was retired after her naval service.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty scary. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slip, you probably needn’t worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss. After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, pla ces and thing quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston. The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts shrink, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affectcommunication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow.Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the mo vie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says. When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved.” Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong. But even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants. You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive (认知的) reserve, Daffner says.“Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies o r activities that force one to think in novel ways,” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster.61. Why does the author say that one needn’t be concerned about memory slips?A) Not all of them are symptoms of dementia.B) They occur only among certain groups of people.C) Not all of them are related to one’s age.D) They are quite common among fifty-year-olds.62. What happens as we become aged according to the passage?A) Our interaction skills deteriorate.B) Some parts of our brain stop functioning.C) Communication within our brain weakens.D) Our whole brain starts shrinking.63. Which memory-related symptom should people take seriously?A) Totally forgetting how to do o ne’s daily routines.B) Inability to recall details of one’s life experiences.C) Failure to remember the names of movies or actors.D) Occasionally confusing the addresses of one’s friends.64. What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up?A) Check the brain’s cognitive reserve.C) Turn to a professional for assistance.B) Stop medications affecting memory.D) Exercise to improve their well-being.65. What is Dr. Daffner’s advice for combating memory loss?A) Having regular physical and mental checkups.B) Taking medicine that helps boost one’s brain.C) Engaging in known memory repair activities.D) Staying active both physically and mentally.Part V Translation(5’*5=25’)Directions:In this part there are five sentences in Chinese. Reading Comprehension (30%)Task 1 (10%)Directions: Reading the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the questions. The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you cannot hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don’t we may have headache, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.Noise adds more tension to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots from moving through the streets at night!Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the “good old days” of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise ---if we shout loudly enough about it.21. Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?A) Because the world is becoming more and more noisy.B) Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.C) Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings.D) Because people knew little about the danger of noise before.22. What may be the result if we cannot hear ourselves think?A) We may forget what we have thought about.B) Our thoughts may be interfered.C) Our mind may be harmed.D) We may have difficulty using the right words.23. When the writer says we cannot return to the good old days, he means that____.A) our society is becoming much worse than beforeB) in our modern society it is hard to lead a quiet lifeC) the old days were much happier than the present timeD)it is impossible for us to deal with noise as we did before24. From the last sentence of the passage we can learn that________.A) we can put noise under control if our measures are effectiveB) sometimes we have to shout loudly so that others can hear usC) shouting is a chief cause of noise pollutionD) it is important to warn people of the danger of noise pollution25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A) Only recently did people realize the harmfulness of noise .B) Noise pollution is the worst kind of pollution we suffer from.C) People are now trying to find ways to make noise as low as possible .D) The writer thinks that it is almost impossible for people to avoid noise .Task 2 (10%)Direction: This task is the same as Task 1. Most have one thing in common: they can cause hearing loss.Studies have shown that sound levels from the machines can reach 115 decibels or more ----roughly equivalent to standing 100 feet from a commercial jet at takeoff. At the level, permanent hearing damage can occur after just 15 minutes. And the earlier a child begins using a headset, the more damage can accumulate. Loud noise causes hearing loss by killing irreplaceable hair cells in the inner ear. Normally, the process occurs slowly as people age, but noise damage can accelerate it.Noise-induced hearing loss is insidious; damage may not be apparent until later in life. Since headsets are used privately, parents often don’t realize how loud their children’s music is.As a rule, experts say headset sound loud enough to be heard by passers (approximately 100 decibels) can cause damage if used more than two hours a day. The allowable time is halved for every five decibels above that. For example, at 105 decibels, the maximum is one hour.Whatever your age, noise is dangerous if it hurts your ears, makes them ring or causes you to shout above it to be heard.31. 北京联合大学第1页共13页《大学英语》I 课程期末考试A 卷(2010—2011学年第1学期)本科■专科□(考试时间120分钟)Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)(10%)Directions:In this part, you will have 15minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions.Choose the best answer from the four choices marked A),B),C)andD).Then mark the corresponding letter on 外语考试答题卡with a single line through the centre.Do Animals Think? At times, your pet may appear to be deep in thought. But don't let that pose fool you.Animals often do things that may make you think they're thinking.Thinking about thinking is tricky, because thinking isn't something you can see.It goes on inside the brain. We know when we're doing it.But who can tell if an animal is thinking? It's not easy. For example, check out the animal actions below.Do they show that the animals are thinking—or not thinking? What do you think?A bird builds a nest that’s just right for its eggs and babies. An octopus uses its arms to open a jar with food inside.A lion sneaks around behind its prey and then chases it toward another lion that’s hiding and waiting. What is thinking? It may be easier to first explain what thinking isn’t.For example,it isn’t needed for things animals do automatically—like when a beaver dams a stream with sticks, mud, and grass. The beaver is making a pond, but it didn’t learn how to do that.It doesn’t think about doing it,either. Some animals just do what they do—kind of like robots—and they do it the same way every time.Scientists call this kind of behavior instinct. But what about when an animal does learn to do something? Is that thinking? For example, you can teach a dog to give you its paw and “shake hands”.But most scientists don’t believe that the dog is thinking when it learns such tricks.Thinking TestsFor a long time, scientists didn’t study animal thinking. Most of them didn’t believe that animals could think. They thought humans were the only thinking animals. Now more scientists are studying this subject. But it’s very hard to prove things that no one can see or measure. So some scientists decided to take a look at brains. Is bigger better? No.Cow brains are bigger than dog brains, but that doesn’t make cows smarter than dogs. And squirrels have some of the biggest brains of all for their body size. But squirrels aren’t even close to being the smartest animals in the world. So the size北京联合大学of a brain may give some clues about brain power, but it doesn’t prove anything.Other scientists study thinking by watching how animals solve problems. They watch animals in the wild.Or they set up thinking tests in a lab.For example,a scientist might put some food just out of an animal’s reach. One kind of animal may grab a stick and use it to slide the food over.Another kind might not be able to figure out a way to get the food. Some scientists think animals that have lots of problems to solve must be smarter than animals with simple lives.Scientists also study certain kinds of behavior for clues about thinking. They watch for three things:whether animals use tools, how they act with each other, and how they communicate.Animal TalkMany animals communicate,or“talk”—with sounds, odors, colors, body language, and other munication helps animals get along with each other and survive. For example, honeybees do a dance in the hive that“tells”other bees where to find food. And birds sing songs that say,“This is my place.”Most scientists would say that this kind of“talking”is automatic and doesn’t take any thinking.Other animals, such as wolves and whales, use many different sounds and signals. Are these animals able to tell each other what’s on their minds—the same way that people do with language?Do they think about what they’re“saying”?Some scientists think so,but most agree that there’s no way to tell for sure.We know that human language takes thinking. So some scientists have tried to see what animals can do with our language. For example,a few apes have been taught sign language. The scientists who work with them say the apes seem to understand how the words work together. The apes sometimes even make up their own sentences. These could be clues that the animals are thinking. And then there’s Alex.Alex is an African gray parrot.Like any parrot,he can copy the human voice. But that is one parrot that just might know what he’s talking about!Alex seems to understand and use human words in the correct way—not just copy them. That makes some people feel that Alex—and the apes that use sign language—must be thinking animals.1.In what way are some animals like robot?A)They copy the voices of other animals.B)They know what they are doing.C)They behave mechanically.D)They do what they do automatically.2.Which of the following is NOT an instinct?A)That a beaver dams a stream with sticks and mud.B)That a dog learns to“shake hands”.C)That a bird builds a nest.D)That a beaver makes a pond.3.Scientists learned from studying the size of animals’brains that_______.A)The animals with all the time for business usually find it boring.People who fly only once in a while are excited. However, some people feel only terror when they board an airplane. They suffer from a phobia,an illogical fear.If you are afraid of poisonous spiders,it is logical. If you are afraid of all spiders, even harmless ones, this is a phobia because it is illogical. Some people have phobias about heights, being shut up in a small area,or being in a large open area.It is not logical to be afraid of these things when there is no danger, but a phobia is not logical.Fear of flying is another phobia. We always hear about a plane crash, but we don’t hear about the millions of flights every year that are safe.Riding in a car is thirty times more dangerous than flying, but research shows that about12percent of people have this fear.People with a phobia about flying are afraid for one or more reasons. They are afraid of heights. They avoid high places, and if they are in a high-rise building, they don’t look out the windows. They might be afraid of being in an enclosed place like an elevator or a tunnel on a highway.when they get on an airplane, they can’t get out until the end of the flight, and the flight might last several hours.Maybe they are afraid of the crowds and all the noise and people rushing around at an airport. This especially bothers older people. Some people are afraid of the unknown. They don’t understand the technology of flying and can’t believe that a huge airplane can stay up in the air.第6页共13页北京联合大学Others are afraid of loss of control. They need to control every situation they are in. When they drive a car, they have some chance of avoiding an accident. In a plane, they have no control over anything. It frightens them to give up control to the pilot and the rest of the crew. For some people,a fear of flying is not important because they don’t really need to fly. But what about someone who works for an international company? What about an entertainer who has to sing in twenty different places in a month? These people have to fly if they want to continue in their profession. There is help for these people. There are special classes in which people learn how to control their fear. They probably can’t lose it,but they can learn to control it.Then they can fly when they need to,even though they probably won’t enjoy it.The class visits an airport and learns how airplane traffic is controlled and how planes are kept in safe condition.A pilot talks about flying through storms, the different noises an airplane makes, and air safety in general. The class learns to do relaxation exercises to become comfortably calm, and the people talk about their fear.Next, the class listens to tape recordings of a takeoff and landing, and later the people ride in a plane on the ground of the airport. Finally they are ready to take a short flight. The instructors of these classes say that between80and90percent of the people who take them are successful. They still have their phobia, but they learn to control their fear.36.Why do people have a phobia about flying?A)Because the plane don’t have a large space.B)Because it is dangerous to fly.C)Because riding cars are safe.D)Because they are afraid of heights.37.The crowds and all the noise especially annoy__________________.A)older people B)people with a phobiaC)people who are afraid of everything D)people who are afraid of flying38.How can the special classes help people?A)the classes can introduce a pilot who talks about flight safety.B)the classes can help fearful flyers to learn how to cope with their fear.C)the classes can help people learn how to fly a plane.D)the classes can help people learn how to cope with the noise when flying. Passage TwoQuestions39to42are based on the following passage. If you are asked,"Why do people marry?"you may answer in anger or surprise. The question seems silly because it is only too natural for people to get married.Divorce, that is,when people end their marriage,on the other hand,is something that should be given serious attention.Yet marriage goes before it as a rule. Why do people marry?People divorce often,as can be seen by the rising divorce rate in the U.S.and elsewhere. But they remarry soon enough after they divorce. Now many of第7页共13页北京联合大学them divorce at a much younger age than before. It is also found that the young have a big share of divorce. But what many sociologists find difficult to understand is that they seem to be more eager to rush into marriage than get out of it.In the old days there was every reason to marry young—especially among the working class. In Chinese communities, unmarried men and women seemed to be disadvantaged in many ways.Women were in a more difficult position than men since in earlier times, girls were not allowed to be educated. They also did not enjoy social freedom. In the past, women who were not"married off”before they turned30were considered to be a problem or a worry for the family. They might have to remain with their families as they could not find jobs, and thus were unable to support themselves. For men, they often led an unpleasant or uncomfortable life as they did not have a wife to do the sewing, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the husband and children. In those days, the family was the cornerstone of society. Both sexes needed marriage far more than now.Is marriage something that people cannot do without? It could be a convenience which people seek. For this reason we find people marrying more than ever and earlier. But is it just convenience that people are after? Why do we find people marrying more than ever and earlier? Why are the young falling so much in love? Why do they show so much attention to each other before marriage?Has the desire for love become so important that people have to marry earlier? Many sociologists believe that the material conveniences that are provided by modern appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines reduce the usefulness of marriage. But such conveniences have also weakened the bonds of family life.Though we seem to be meeting more people, our relationships are few.We are close to crowds but we feel more alone than before. One feels lonely in the midst of crowds. It is just like being at a party where, when left alone, one would feel some sort of emptiness. All of a sudden, one is living in a world one does not understand. Thus one feels the need for somebody that one can be close to!Then one can share body and soul.So this is the promise of marriage.Movies, songs, romance and TV all show a "normal"person must love and therefore marry. As it is,love and marriage are closely connected with each other. The desire for love makes people eager to get married. In the family, children are told that"love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage".They feel that it is only too natural to get married. But alas, nothing could be less so.Love has delighted and worried us.In real life, love and marriage may not go together.Love can be described as a restless horse which would run away, refusing to be put under control. In the end it overturns the carriage. When love runs away the result is a failed marriage. But did it ever occur to us that we can and should keep the horse under control?Once we are in charge of love,it can be with us for the rest of our lives.39.Which of the facts about marriage and divorce nowadays is TRUE?A)The people who divorce are those who rush into marriage.B)Those who divorce are unwilling to marry again.C)People are not eager to get married.第8页共13页北京联合大学第9页共13页D)More and more people are divorcing when they are young.40.How do the material conveniences in modern society impact people’s lives?A)They weaken the relationships between family members.B)They make family life more convenient but less interesting.C)They make people think it's more useful to get married.D)They make people feel lonelier in a crowd.41.Nowadays,what people are actually searching for in marriages is _________.A)material conveniences B)the sharing of body and soulC)mutual understanding D)a companion to kill one's loneliness42.When people refer to love and marriage as the relationship between horse and carriage, they mean that _________.A)marriages and divorces are naturalB)when marriage runs away like a horse, love failsC)we have to put love under control before marriageD)love and marriage go togetherPassage ThreeQuestions 43to 45are based on the following passage.E.T.—A Fairy Tale of the Space AgeFor many children the search for extra-terrestrial life or life from other planets may seem to be already over.An extra-terrestrial (外星人)has been with us for some time.Children ask for shirts that read “E.T.—I love you”and for E.T.toys under the Christmas tree.Steven Spielberg’s film,“E.T.—the Extra-Terrestrial,”has become one of the biggest film money-makers of all time;even ahead of “Star Wars”.What is it about this big-eyed creature from outer space that has made America’s children and many adults so excited?Psychologists say that the film of E.T.,like ancient fairy tales, contains powerful stories that help children through the difficult process of growing up.The message that fairy tales bring to the child is that a struggle against severe difficulties in life cannot be avoided, but that if one does not run away but meets unexpected and often unjust hardship, one masters all obstacles and at the end comes out victorious.Today’s children, who often grow up alone in homes that are separated from other children, need fairy tales even more than children did at the time when those tales were first told.In E.T.they find a fairy tale with a special interest because it is set in the space age, which is closer to their situation than a story set in an old castle.E.T.may not be good-looking physically, but he is totally harmless, kind and charming. No child need fear an outer space filled with creatures like E.T.The film has at least two heroes who children can understand and with whom they can share their feelings —E.T.himself and Elliott, the 10-year-old boy who finds, looks after and saves the friendly and likable creature after he is left behind by his spaceship. Both Elliott and E.T.have been left to look after themselves.Elliott feels alone because his parents have separated, but he finds a magical friend whom he can protect and who北京联合大学第10页共13页provides him with friendship.Children often have a strong need for imaginary playmates. For all children, the film raises the question of the need to grow up and the desire to stay a child.Elliott decides not to go with E.T.aboard the spaceship, where he could continue living in an imaginary world. As one child said,“Elliott stayed on Earth because he has to grow up and you can’t grow up on the faraway planet of Jupiter. You stay small and a kid like E.T.”The film offers many ideas from the traditional fairy tale:first, good children get the better of bad adults.Secondly, the hero is put in a difficult position in the early stages of the story but there is a happy ending when he is finally rescued.Thirdly, the film offers the idea of rebirth, which is found in many fairy tales. Finally, the story also reminds one of “The Three Feathers”by the well-known writers of fairy tales —the Grimm brothers. In this story, the youngest son wins his father’s kingdom by defeating his brothers with the help of an ugly old toad.Put to a final test,to bring back the most beautiful woman,he wins again by choosing the toad who turns into a beauty. Thus,it is love which turns even ugly things into something beautiful. It’s easy to see how that is true of E.T.43.What people can learn from the story of E.T.is __________________.A)that children need playmates badlyB)how parents should take good care of their lonely childrenC)how difficult the process of growing up can beD)victory can be achieved if people face difficulties bravely44.What makes E.T so popular with children?A)E.T.is likeable, harmless and kind-hearted.B)It is an exciting ancient fairy tale.C)The story is set in an old castle.D)E.T.is a big-eyed good-looking creature.45.The main point of “The Three Feathers”is __________________.A)good Reading Comprehension (20 points)Directions: In this part, there are two passages. Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. (20 points: 10×2 points)Passage OneInternet use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University. Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless virtual communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology, it’s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study' s sponsors (发起人). “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”16. What's the finding of the research undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University?A. People spend more time on the Internet now.B. People spend less time with their families and friends now.C. The Net proves socially healthier than television.D. Internet use may cause a drop in psychological health.17. What had the researchers expected before the research?A. The Net may account for the drop in psychological health.B. Internet use may improve social health.C. Internet use has nothing to do with social health.D. Spending much time on the Internet makes people feel bad and lonely.18. Which is NOT true according to the passage?A. The Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.B. Internet communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation.C. Undeveloped Internet technology causes the drop in psychological health.D. The wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.19. What does Christine Riley, the psychologist, suggest?A. It's necessary to take social factors into account in designing applications and services fortechnology.B. It's important to tell the users how to design and apply the technology.C. Compared with social factors, the technology itself has more influence on the Internet users.D. No social factors should be considered in applications and services for technology.20. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage?A. How to Use the InternetB. Disadvantages of the InternetC. Social Factors and the InternetD. Internet May Cause Bad FeelingsPassage TwoThe $11 billion self-help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like "I never do anything right" into positive ones like "I can succeed." But was positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply highlight how unhappy they are.The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your dim friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the essayists were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written. In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students' self-esteem. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, "I am lovable."Those with low self-esteem didn't feel better after the forced self-affirmation. In fact, their moods turned significantly darker than those of members of the control group, who weren't urged to think positive thoughts. The paper provides support for newer forms of psychotherapy that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Meditation (静思) techniques, in contrast, can teach people to put their shortcomings into a larger, more realistic perspective. Call it the power of negative thinking.21. What do we learn from the first paragraph about the self-help industry?A. It is a highly profitable industry.B. It is based on the concept of positive thinking.C. It was established by Norman Vincent Peale.D. It has yielded positive results.22. What is the finding of the Canadian researchers?A. Encouraging positive thinking many do more harm than good.B. There can be no simple therapy for psychological problems.C. Unhappy people cannot think positively.D. The power of positive thinking is limited.23. What does the author mean by "… you're just underlining his faults" (Line 4, Para. 3)?A. You are not taking his mistakes seriously enough.B. You are pointing out the errors he has committed.C. You are emphasizing the fact that he is not intelligent.D. You are trying to make him feel better about his faults.24. What do we learn from the experiment of Wood, Lee and Perunovic?A. It is important for people to continually boost their self-esteem.B. Self-affirmation can bring a positive change to one's mood.C. Forcing a person to think positive thoughts may lower their self-esteem.D. People with low self-esteem seldom write down their true feelings.25. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. The effects of positive thinking vary from person to person.B. Meditation may prove to be a good form of psychotherapy.C. Different people tend to have different ways of thinking.D. People can avoid making mistakes through meditation.Part III. Filling in the blanks (5 points)Directions: In this part, there is a passage with five blanks.
