But in fact they “lack any grounding in science” and were of no use.McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.“I never had any bad result from customers,” he said.( ) 39. It’s fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You’ll realize what’s changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, love, and some other experiences: We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It’s empty, but it’s where my earliest memories are. There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween –when I didn’t want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents’ room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime – waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.I’m lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property (住宅)on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew, and I learned.Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it’s where I’ll find my family, my dog, and my belongings. I purposel y leave the window open at night because I know I’ll be blamed by Mom. But I didn’t mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I’m home.( ) 43. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: “Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don’t see –and guide whether we see fear.”To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪)to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person’s fe eling of fear.“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,” Dr Garfinkel said.“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”( ) 47. What is the finding of the study?A. One’s heart affects how he feels fear.B. Fear is a result of one’s relaxed heartbeat.C. Fear has something to do with one’s health.D. One’s fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.( ) 48. The study was carried out by analyzing ________.A. volunteers’ heartbeats when they saw terribl e picturesB. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditionsC. volunteers’ reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scansD. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication( ) 49. Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that heshould concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting annoyed, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and more accurate when he stood up. Could he be more absorbed while standing up?This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to lead to success. This child would have the willpower to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality qualities, and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their ways.I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept ou r kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being personal and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.24. Why did the author try to get his son seated time and again?A. To make him stay focused.B. To make him study hard.C. To make him keep calm.D. to make him behave well.25. The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to the author’s _______.A. ideaB. discoveryC. beliefD. disappointment26. What can we learn from this passage?A. Parents have a great influence on their kids.B. Kids should be encouraged to study by themselves.C. We should have a better understanding of ki ds’ behaviors.D. It is not necessary for parents to worry about kids’ behaviors.27. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. The study of kids’ behaviorsB. A new attitude towards kidsC. Kids’ success in their own stylesD. The importance of being uniqueCCelebrities are more in love with themselves than the average person, according to a new study. In case anyone needed proof, a new study supports the widely held opinion: famous people are more narcissistic (自我陶醉的), which means they are more in love with themselves than the average person is. That is the conclusion drawn by Drew Pinsky and S. Mark Young of the University of Southern California, whose study of 200 celebrities will appear in the Journal of Research in Personality. It is not the entertainment industry that turns stars into narcissists, the study found. Rather, it suggests, the selfadoring people seek jobs in show business. The study, whose subjects were all celebrities from Pinsky's “Loveline” radio show, found that reality TV stars were the most narcissistic of all celebrities. Female stars were also more likely than the male stars to exhibit narcissistic characteristics. It's “common sense” that celebrities are narcissists, said Jeremy Ritzlin, a longtime Hollywood psychologist who has not seen the study. “Everyone knows famous people are really in love with themselves,” he said. “So it would be natural for narcissists to be attracted toward the stage and spotlight, where other people will also think highly of them.”Pinsky, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at USC's Keck School of Medicine, said narcissists desire attention, are overconfident, behave strangely and lack sympathy.” However, they are easilyliked, especially on first meeting, are ou tgoing and perform well in public,” added Pinsky, who has hosted the radio show “Loveline” for 20 years.Celebrity guests appearing on the program were randomly chosen to participate in the study. Most of them took the Narcissistic Personality test.28. Who are more likely to be selfadoring in the study?A. The men TV stars.B. The women TV stars.C. The average people.D. It is not mentioned in the passage.29. What can we learn about the fact that celebrities are narcissists?A. It has been proved by Jeremy Ritzlin.B. It is already known to most of the people.C. It has been published in a research report.D. It means that celebrities don’t like others.30. Which of the following best describes the character of narcissists?A. Active.B. Selfish.C. Honest.D. Warm-hearted.31. Why narcissists like to enter the entertainment industry?A. They like to put on performances on stage.B. It’s much easier for them to find jobs there.C. They can be guests on the radio programs.D. They want to get well received by people.D“How to Train Your Dragon” by British author Cressida Cowell is one of the best pieces of children’s literature. A child can make a whole alternative universe with a vivid imagination and Toothless, the hero’s hunting dragon, thus turning a rainy day into an adventure of a lifetime. However, if you have never read the book but instead choose to see the film version, you might think you were seeing a new-age war movie meant for adults rather than children.Let’s look at “Where the Wild Things Are” for furtherdiscussion. The story centers around a lonely eight-year-old boy named Max, who sails away to an island. Creatures living there declare Max their king. What an amazing piece of children’s literature! A treasure for every child’s libra ry. Yet, children were crying in the movie theatre. Owls were falling from the sky, chicken’s arms were being torn off, and a child was running around a dark abandoned world fighting evil (恶魔) as the only human. It was almost as if Hollywood could not imagine children enjoying a movie for its basic literature content. Hollywood might be right. But more and more its audiences are complaining (抱怨) that there is an increased amount of violence in children’s stories today than in the past. While there appears to be a trend in our society to make more violence more accessible to younger children, books and literature are generally an exception. I truly believe that children’s literature has become more vivid, and more colorful. This is a great treasure for the children, and is certainly not violent. What has changed the children’s stories of today is not the writers, but the film industry. In some way, children’s literature is just being strangely twisted. I wonder how much influence the author have over this.32. Which of the following can be found in the book of How to Train Your Dragon?A. Risks.B. Children’s teeth.C. New age.D. Owls.33. What did the author think of the film “Where the Wild Things Are”?A. Moving.B. Interesting.C. Frightening.D. Amazing.34. Which statement does the author agree to?A. Children should read books rather than see films.B. There is an increase in violence in children’s literature.C. The film version of children’s literature is disappointing.D. Authors should provide more excellent works for children.35. How does the passage mainly develop?A. By inferring.B. By giving explanations.C. By making comparisons.D. By providing examples.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The same man, who dislikes his job in the factory or even in the office ,may work hard at the weekend ,painting the house or digging the garden. What is the reason ,then ?In most cases ,it is because these people simply do not enjoy the Job they are doing .It does not give them any real satisfaction .It may be quite easy ,like making up wooden boxes ,but it is very boring.Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part ofa much larger one ,such as attaching a door handle to a car .But the part they play in actually making the car is so small that they can never say :I have made something !Yet in modern society somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets because this Is the way society is organized ,No matter how ordinary a job is, it plays a part in society and therefore deserves our due respect. Society cannot function a single day without the “dull and boring”jobs.[写作内容]1. 以约30个词概括上文的主要内容。

But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control.Tim knew it would soon be swallowed by the waves."Everything went quiet in my head," Tim recalls(回忆). "I was trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line."Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so, he raised his head to judge his progress. "At one point, I considered turning back," he says. "I wondered if I was putting my life at risk." After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to yell to the boys, "Take down the umbrella!"Christian made much effort to take down the umbrella. Then Tim was able to catch up and climb aboard the boat. He took over rowing, but the waves were almost too strong for him."Let's aim for the pier(码头)," Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon afterward, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. "Can you guys swim?" he cried. "A little bit," the boys said.Once the were in the water, Tim decided it would he safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. "you have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt."The detectors, sold for up to $42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they "lacked any grounding in science" and were of no use.McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand."I never had any had results from customers," he said.39. It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we ran remember pain, live, and some other experiences; We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are. There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween-when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents' room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime - waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property(住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew and I learned.Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don't mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home.43. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: "Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, "The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see - and guide whether we see fear."To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear."We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’to each other tochange our feelings and reduce fear," Dr Garfinkel said."We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder."47. What is the finding of the study?A. One's heart affects how he feels fear.B. fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.C. fear has something to do with one's health.D. Ones fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.48. The study was carried out by analyzing _______.A. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible picturesB. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditionsC. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data form their brain scansD. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication49. Which of the following is closest in meaning to "mechanism" in Paragraph 6?A. Order.B. system.C. Machine.D.
