Hundreds of people have formed impressions of you through that little device(装置) on your desk. And they’ve never actually met41 you。
Everything they know about you 42。
came through this device, sometimes from hundreds of miles away。

I woke up this morning feeling a sense of excitement in the air. The sun was shining brightly through my window, promising a beautiful day ahead. As I walked to school, I couldn't help but notice the vibrant colors of the flowers blooming along the sidewalk. The chirping of birds filled the air, adding to the joyful atmosphere of the day.In class, my teacher announced that we would be having a surprise quiz. My heart sank for a moment, but I quickly reminded myself that challenges are just opportunities in disguise.During lunch break, I sat with my friends and we shared stories and laughter. It's moments like these that make me grateful for the friendships I have. After school, I decided to take a walk in the park. Thefresh air and greenery helped clear my mind and rejuvenate my spirit. As the day came to a close, I reflected on the ups and downs I had experienced. Despite the challenges, I felt grateful for the little moments of joy that made the day special.Overall, today was a reminder to appreciate the beauty in the ordinary and find joy in the unexpected. Life is full of surprises, and it's up to us to embrace them with open arms.。

Do you remember we agreed to circulate our ideas for our school project this year? Well, here is our suggestion and we in our school hope you will join us to develop it.The idea came to us in the autumn of 2004. We were sitting in our class when our head teacher made an announcement. “There’ll be a new boy starting school tomorrow. He comes from the circus so he’ll be with us for a while.” Immediately there was wh ispering around the classroom.I heard remarks like “Those are dirty people”; “They eat raw meat”; and “Watch out for your bags”. The teacher must have heard them because she stopped the talking and said in a very serious voice: “Jake is our guest for as long as he stays here. Make sure you treat him well. I don’t want to hear any complaints about your behaviour to him.”I was curious because it was the first time I had met anyone from a circus. Fortunately for me, the next morning, after being introduced to the class he sat in the only spare seat next to me. Of course I didn’t want to be nosy(管闲事的)but I couldn’t help looking at him sideways as I began my mathematics task. I noticed Jake was smaller than me and had dirty finger nails. His shirt was clean but had been repaired in many places and his trousers were helped up by a wide, leather belt. As he seemed to have no handkerchief and was sniffing loudly, I passed him one of mine. Immediately the boys began to whisper “What did you do that for? Leave him be!” I concentrated on my work. From my left a slight movement showed that Jake must have heard the remarks too. He seemed to be having great difficulty with his work and was struggling to hold his pen correctly. He looked around as if for help. I looked around too. The teacher was busy so I leaned over and offered to explain the problems to him. As he listened his mouth split into a smile. His eyes lit up as if a light had been turned on and he returned to the exercises with enthusiasm. He finished them qu ickly and proudly presented them to the teacher. “Well done, Jake,” she approved. Jake smiled and was soon busy sorting out information and adding more of his own.I thought about how Jake’s life would be. I remembered seeing the campsite and thinking how poor the facilities (设施)were. So I decided to help. As it was my turn to suggest a project for our grade, I put forward this idea. Our head teacher accepted it and so we began to prepare our plansto improve the campsite. Hope you will join us.56. Why did the students dislike Jake even before they saw him?A. They must have heard bad stories about circus people.B. They always judged a person by what he looks like.C. The teacher hadn’t introduced Jake to them beforehand.D. A newcomer was not welcome at that time.57. What’s the author’s attitude towards Jake?A. He copied the other boys’ behavior.B. He was distant about what Jake’s life was like.C. He couldn’t ignore what other people said about Jake.D. He had sympathy for the poor and disadvantaged.58. The author mentions how Jake did maths to show that _______.A. the teacher was helpful and friendlyB. the maths problem was too hard for himC. Jake was courageous and determinedD. the author was better at maths59. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A. To argue circus people should be treated fairly.B.

A weak ray of light came in through a small hole in the wall and he was absorbed in his reading. This is a well-known story from an ancient Chinese idiom. The boy, being poor, couldn't afford even a candle, so he bored a hole in the wall to “steal” light from his neighbor's house to read at night. The moral of the story is: spare no effort to acquire knowledge and never get discouraged easily no matter how difficult the situation may be.Of course, things are totally different today. It is not the story itself but what is reflected in the story that counts. Hard work pays off. We should take pains to improve ourselves through learning and get prepared for the future.

They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?”the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.“I don’t make them up,”she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.5. What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?A. Two strangers joined her.B. Her childhood friends came in.C. A heavy rain ruined the dinner.D. Some people held a party there.6. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 6 refers to Welty’s .A. readersB. partiesC. friendsD. stories7. What can we learn about the characters in Welty’s fiction?A. They live in big cities.B. They are mostly women.C. They come from real life.D. They are pleasure seekers.CIf you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.8.What can people do at the apple events?A. Attend experts’ lectures.B. Visit fruit-loving families.C. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.D. Taste many kinds of apples.9.What can we learn about Decio?A. It is a new variety.B. It has a strange look.C. It is rarely seen now.D. It has a special taste.10. What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3mean?A. A practical idea.B. A vain hope.C.A brilliant plan.D. A selfish desire.11.What is the author’s p urpose in writing the text?A. To show how to grow apples.B .To introduce an apple festival.C. To help people select apples.D. To promote apple research.DBad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jon ah Berger, a scholar at theUniversity of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news s hared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”12 .What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to?A. News reports.B. Research papers.C .Private e-mails. D. Daily conversations.13. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer?A. They’re socially inactive.B. They’re good at telling stories.C. They’re inconsiderate of others.D. They’re careful with their words.14.Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research?A . Sports new. B. Science articles.C. Personal accounts.D. Financial reviews.15 .What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Sad Stories Travel Far and WideB .Online News Attracts More PeopleC. Reading Habits Change with the TimesD.

AMy father was a foreman(领班)of a sugar-cane plantation(甘蔗种植园)in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields. Every day I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with a broomstick(扫帚柄). For $ 1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks. It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I a lso learned about being respectful and faithful to the people one works for. More importantly, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work.I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $ 18 a week. Our home was a three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-confidence, one of the most important things a person can have. When I was seven, I got work at a golf course(赛场)near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dream of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle. The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of tree branches and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field— except now I was driving golf balls with club, not oxen with a broomstick.1. The underlined word “tedious” in Paragraph 2 m ost probably means _______.A. difficultB. boringC. interestingD. unusual2. The writer learned that_______ from his first job.A. he should work for those who he liked mostB. he should work longer than what he was expectedC. he should never fail to say hello to his ownerD. he should be respectful and faithful to the people he worked for3. _______ gave the writer self-confidence.A. Having a family of eight peopleB. Owning his own golf courseC. Bringing money back home to help the familyD. Helping his father with the work on the plantation4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. He wanted to be a successful golfer.B. He wanted to buy a golf course near his house.C. He was satisfied with the job he got on a plantation.D. He wanted to make money by guiding oxen with a broomstick.BSpeed reading is a necessary and vital skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and tweets(微博)to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of the text. With so much information available through our electronic devices, it would be impossible to get through everything if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to unplug(拔掉电源插座)and enjoy reading slowly, one that claims to have benefits beyond intellectual stimulation(智力上的刺激)by speed reading.A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smart phones. They sink into comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour.Unlike typical(一贯的)book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn’t to exchange ideas about certain books, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment. According to the story, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the traditional way of reading.Traditional readers, like Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. Forexample, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that mature people who take part in activities that use their brain, such as reading, suffer less memory loss as they get older. Another study published last year in Science showed that reading novels in the traditional way helps people understand others’ mental states and beliefs—a key skill in building relationships.5. Speed reading is a necessary and vital skill in the Internet age because people______.A. have to grasp the meaning fasterB. have much more information to readC. no longer read word by word, line by lineD. must use their smartphones more frequently6. Members of the Wellington book club are expected to______.A. read peacefully for an hourB. make coffee for the other membersC. regularly swap ideas about booksD. turn off their smartphones for recharging7. According to the Neurology study, who is most likely to suffer memory loss?A. A 65-year-old man who rarely reads.B. A 79-year-old woman who reads regularly.C. A 17-year-old middle school student who seldom reads novels.D. A healthy 24-year-old university graduate who often plays games.8. What’s the author’s attitude towards the way of reading slowly? __________A. DesperateB. NeutralC. PositiveD. IndifferentCI was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching (紧握) my fists with impatience. At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with the traffic light.I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were obviously no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we all have with each other. It'snot only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights. It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual (相互的)trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.9.Why did the author feel impatient while driving?A. Because he had already driven for a long time.B. Because it was too far away from his destination.C. Because something urgent happened in his family.D. Because he could not overpass a truck on a narrow road.10.The author stopped at the traffic light because _________ .A. there were passers-by crossing the roadB. some policemen were on duty just at that pointC. the trust between people influenced the authorD. there was potential danger11.What would happen if people didn't trust each other in most cases?A. A11 the things would run normally.B. The social system would be thrown into disorder.C. The social traditions would be abandoned.D. Strict rules and laws would be made.12.What is the theme of the passage?A. Mutual Trust is the best policy.B. A bird in hand is worth two in bush.C. Actions speak louder than words.D. Among the blind the one-eyed is the king.DHow cool can libraries be in an age of iPods and Kindles? The security issue has been emphasized on. We have organized several school meetings to strengthen the students’ awareness of safety about food, traffic and so on. By communicating with parents often and in time, our school can supervise and ensure our safety. Besides, a proper number of security guards have been employed to guard the school under a clear duty. Stricter security measures have been taken by our school, including a requirement that all visitors provide identification and register. The students have been taught the ways to protect themselves from danger. For example, once we smell something unusual, we should report it to the school guard immediately.
