She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.〞 Well, I guess this is the occasion. He took the skirt from me and put it on the bed. His hands touched the soft material for a moment, then he shut the drawer and turned to me, "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion."I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my attitude to life. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to enjoy, not suffer. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and treasure them."Someday" and "one of these days" are being lost from my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I' m not sure what my sister would have done if she had known she wouldn't have tomorrow .I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend her fences for past things.I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food.If I knew that my hours were limited ,those little things left undone would make me angry. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I was going to get in touch with some day. Angry and sorry because I didn't tell my husband and daughter often enough how much I truly love them.I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath truly, is... a gift from God.1. The best title for the passage would be______.A. Every day is A GiftB. Alternatively, you must lick your finger and make a cross on the toe of your shoe, and not look again at the shoe until the mark has dried.② UmbrellaAnother common superstition is that it is unlucky to open an umbrella in the house - it will either bring misfortune to the person that opened it or to the household. The superstition could date from the old time when its purpose was to act as a sunshade. If opened indoors, it might be considered to be an attack on the sun. Anyone opening an umbrella indoors in fine weather is unpopular, as it inevitably brings rain!③ Number 13The number 13 is said to be unlucky for some, and when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday, anyone wishing to avoid an inauspicious event had better stay indoors.④ Seven years bad luckThe worst misfortune that can befall you is caused by breaking a mirror, as it brings seven years of bad luck! The superstition is supposed to have originated in ancient times, when mirrors were considered to be tools of the gods.⑤ Black catIn the UK, Black cats are generally considered lucky in the UK, even though they are connected with witchcraft(巫术). In fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school. It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case in America. In the nineteenth century, a usual American activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there was no television at the time, nor movie theaters, nor World Wide Web, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source of pleasure, of self-education, of connection to other people or to the world beyond one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an individual one, and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life. How did things change? Why are most Americans no longer comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poem has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems? There are, I believe, three culprits(肇事者):poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third: the world surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the twentieth century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavorable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, that they belonged where other difficult-to-read things belonged.Poets failed the reader, so did teachers. They want their students to know something about the skills of a poem, they want their students to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs when teachers push these concerns on their high school students is that young people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.9. Reading poems is thought to be a social act in the nineteenth century because ______________.A. it built a link among peopleB. it helped unite a communityC. it was a source of self-educationD. it was a source of pleasure10. The underlined word “diversion〞(in Paragraph 2) most probably means “_________〞.A. concentrationB. changeC. amusementsD. stories11. According to the passage, what is the main cause of the great gap between readers and poetry?A. Students are becoming less interested in poetry.B. Students are poorly educated in high school.C. TV and the Internet are more attractive than poetry.D. Poems have become difficult to understand.12. In the last paragraph, the writer questions ____________.A. the difficulty in studying poemsB. the way poems are taught in schoolC. students’ wrong ideas about poetryD. the techniques used in writing poemsDHow can a creature weighing over 5 tons and normally taking 150 kilograms of food and 120 liters of water per day survive in a desert environment? In the southwest African country of Namibia, and the Sahara lands of Mali further north, the desert elephant does just that.Although not regarded as a separate species from the African elephant, the desert cousin differs in many ways. Their bodies are smaller, to absorb less heat, and their feet are larger for easier walking across sandy surfaces, They are taller, to reach higher branches. They have shorter tusks〔象牙〕, and most importantly, longer trunks to dig for water in riverbeds.Desert elephants can travel over 70 kilometers in search for feeding grounds and waterholes, and have a larger group of families. They drink only every 3 –4 days, a nd can store water in a “bag〞 at the back of their throat, which is only used when badly needed. Desert elephants are careful feeders – they seldom root up trees and break fewer branches, and thus maintain what little food sources are available. Young elephants may even eat the dung〔粪便〕of the female leader of a group when facing food shortage.During drought they are unlikely to give birth to their young but with good rains the birthrate will increase greatly. Desert elephants have sand baths, sometimes adding their own urine〔尿液〕to make them muddy! As we continue to overheat our weak planet, it can only be hoped that other animal species will adapt as extraordinarily well to change as the desert elephant.13.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means “〞.A.remains in the African countriesB.drinks 120 liters of water a dayC.manages to live in desert areasD.eats 150 kilograms of food daily14.Desert elephants are called careful feeders because they _________.A.rarely ruin treesB.drink only every 3-4 daysC.search for food in large groupsD.protect food sources for their young15.What can be inferred from the last sentence in the passage?A.Overheating the earth can be stopped.B.Not all animal species are so adaptable.C.The planet will become hotter and hotter.D.Not all animals are as smart as desert elephants.第二节(共5小题;每一小题3分,总分为15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最优选项。

D .To call people’s attention to allergic reaction.CThe idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid --- we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink. However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilisk Basilicus basilicus, a lizard(蜥蜴)native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water’s surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, we’ll need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate “hitting.”But fortunately there is an alternative: cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot), you can createa “non-Newtonian” liquid that doesn’t behave like normal water. Now if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles(粒子)in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid of cornflour.Fun though all this may sound, it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink --- and take a shower afterward!8.Walking on water hasn’t become a reality mainly because humans _______.A. are not interested in itB. have biological limitationsC. have not invented proper toolsD. are afraid to make an attempt9.What do we know about Basilicus basilicas from the passage?A. It is light enough to walk on water.B. Its huge feet enable it to stay above water.C. It can run across water at a certain speedD. Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water10.What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage?A. To create a thick liquid.B. To turn the water into solid.C. To help the liquid behave normally.D. To enable the water to move rapidly.11.What is the author’s attitude toward the idea of human’s walking on water?A. It is risky but beneficial.B. It is interesting and worth tryingC. It is crazy and cannot become a realityD. It is impractical; though theoretically possibleDPeople usually visit cafes to ease themselves of their tiredness and keep themselves from falling asleep, but Mr. Healing, a popular cafe chain in South Korea actually does the opposite. Customers can come in, order a drink, lie down a comfortable massage chair, and take a nap. Many Koreans suffer from a lack of sleep as a result of overworking, so any opportunity to relax and even take a nap is greatly appreciated. Mr. Healing is the perfect place to go when you’re on a short work or school break and you need to catch up on sleep. The cafe offers massage periods in various modes, depending on how much time you have and how you choose to spend it.The 20-minute session is priced at $ 3.5, the 30-minute massage costs $ 7, and the 50-minute session is $ 9, all of which also include a drink. Once you make your choice, you are taken to the “healing center”. You are asked to take off your shoes as well as any jewelry that might damage the chairs, after which you can choose a massage mode, from “stretch”or “sleep”. You can start with stretch for a few minutes, and then switch to sleep if you want to take a short nap. After it comes to an end, you are taken back to the cafe area to enjoy a coffee or one of the many other refreshing drinks on the menu.Mr. Healing cafes are so popular in Korea that customers are advised to make reservations in advance to be sure that a massage chair is available. “I have to sit on a chair and stare at a computer monitor all day due to my job, the healing room was truly effective to relieve tiredness and stress from weekdays,”said Park Hye-sun, a 24-year-old officer. Some have described Mr. Healing and other similar relaxation cafes in South Korea as simple fashions, but others see them as a sustainable business model, because they offer a service that Koreans really need.12. Why do customers come to Mr. Healing?A. To drink specialty coffee.B. To have themselves checked.C. To have a relaxation.D. To sleep before work.13. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?A. The price of the service.B. The process of the service.C. The tips for customers.D. The choices for customers.14. What does the underlined word “it”in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Your choice.B. Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain, in rats at least."This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important一not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong trackof cognitive(认知的)development during aging," says Martin Wojtowicz of theUniversity of Toronto, Canada. "In humans, it may delay the appearance of Alzheimer's symptoms(阿兹海默氏症),possibly to the point of preventing them."Wojtowicz's team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks. Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear. Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room. The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn't remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.“The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we're young, at least for rats, has influence on brain and cognitive health—in the form of better memories —when we're older," says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells.12. The study shows that______.A. physical activity is important for physical healthB. using the running wheels is of benefit to the rats' growthC. physical activity can prevent human's Alzheimer's symptomsD. the more exercise a rat has when young, the better memory it will possess when older13. How are Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly developed?A. By analyzing causes.B. By giving an example.C. By describing the process.D. By showing differences.14. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Exercise.B. Development.C. Benefit.D. Study.15. What is the author's attitude towards the animal study?A. Negative.B. Objective.C. You can give back by volunteering at your local shelter or food bank, or even by donating blood. If all else fails, a purchase from the growing number of organizations that give a portion of their sales to charity will do the trick. But perhaps the best way to celebrate the day is those nearest and dearest to you. The fields, hills and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground whose adventures were only limited by my imagination. I can remember once hiking to nearby lake and walking slowly around it. At the back of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tyre tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ears “turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn and walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up being trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart waspounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away, but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on the earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love! May you always help your fellow travelers along the way! And may your roads always lead you home again!28.Why did the author hardly feel bored when he was young?A.He could have fun in nature. B.He had many friends to play with.C.He could watch TV all day. B.All Roads Lead Home.C.Every Effort Is Worthwhile. D.Be Brave to AdventureDBats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.Last week, the group of scientists said they had discovered important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体). The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒),which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what causes aging. The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived an average of 37 years. The scientists said it had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists’findings suggest that these bats’cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer thanhumans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rat.32. What decides bats’aging process according to the text? .A. The body size of the batB. The type of chromosomesC. The building of cellD. The length of telomeres33. How long does a greater mouse-eared bat generally live?A. 19 years.B. 41 years.C. 37 years.D. 60 years.34. We can learn from the text that _________ .A. nineteen kinds of bats could live longer than humansB. the scientists have studied bats for more than six decadesC. the bats studied in the research are of the same speciesD. researchers focus on finding out why humans live long35. In which column of a magazine can you read the text?A. ScienceB. LifestyleC. FashionD. Business第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项。

AIn my very first job with some archaeologists, I wasn’t digging objects out of the ground, instead I was employed as an artist, drawing what they found. However, I was soon more interested in the stories behind the objects than in drawing them and that’s how my career in archa eology started. I still draw what I find in my work as a specialist on the Silk Road, the old trade route running from Egypt to Mongolia, and I also work on some underwater projects too.In archaeology, my all-time hero is an American called Raphael Pumpelly. I first heard about him when I was a student on a trip to Turkmenistan, a country right in the heart of Asia. To get around the country,I had to learn Russian so that I could speak to the local people. When I got there I thought, “Wow! I’m one of the first Americans here!” Then an old man told me about an American archaeologist, Raphael Pumpelly, who was there doing the same thing over 100 years ago.Archaeology’s in my family. My wife’s in the same profession, and, although our two boys aren’t interes ted in the future in archaeology themselves, we’ve been on some great digs together and they love what we do because they get to travel with us. Last summer, we took them to Lake Titicaca in South America, in the high areas of the Andes mountain range. My best experience was when I was digging on the Egyptian Red Sea coast. There’s very little rain and it’s so dry that everything is kept as it was. In an old house, where the owner used to store goods from the ships that came in, I picked up a 700-year-old mat in front of the house and there, under it, after all that time, was the house key with the owner’s name carved on it. It felt like he could be on his way home any minute! And I thought, “Hey, I do just that. This man’s not much different to me!”21. While working in Egypt, what did the writer find so interesting?A. That people from different centuries can be so similar.B. The fact that the doormat was in such good condition.C. The way the people managed to live in such a dry place.D. Science and technologyBTwenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute ”, answered a weak, elderly voice. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”“Oh, you’re such a good man.”She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.“Oh, I’m in no hurry,”she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”We drove in silence to the address she had given me.“How much do I owe you?”she asked.“Nothing.” I said.“You have to make a living,”she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. What can we learn from the story?A. Giving is always a pleasure.B. People should respect each other.C. An act of kindness can bring people great joy.D. People should learn to appreciate others’concern.CMost people forget what they’ve just learned within 12 or 24 hours. If you are reading this post now, chances are that tomorrow you'll not even remember it. Our brain works like a big search engine. When you insert a new piece of information, it goes to a big stack called short-term memory. When you want to remember that information, your brain will try to search inside that stack for the information you requested. That's why you often remember a title of a song after many hours from your first attempt. If you are trying to recall something after a long time (it can be even one hour for useless information), your brain will have a hard time finding it, as it's more likely that you have forgotten it. Knowing this, we can try to understand why we forget what we’ve learned just a few hours ago. When a new piece of information enters your brain, it is stored as unstable information, because your brain doesn't know whether it's useful or not. For example, you don't need to remember every car you've seen in your daily commute(通勤)to work. But what happens when you try to recall something you’ve previously learned? Most times you simply can’t. If I would tell you now to find the sum of the number from 1 to n, you have to calculate (n+1)×n/2, chances are that within one hour it’ll be already hard for you to recall the correct formula (公式), although it's pretty easy. This happens because (if you are not good at math) your brain does not find similar information already stored in your brain, so it's hard for it to strengthen that information alone. And by now you've probably forgotten it. As you've just read, the major difficulty for your brain is to strengthen and create consistency and the best way to help your brain do it is by recalling what you've just learned many times.8. Why do most people forget what they have just learned in one day?A. Because short-term memory plays the main role in remembering newly learned thingB. Because long-term memory plays the main role in remembering newly learned thingsC. Because most people are not clever enough to learn new thingsD. Because long-term memory is hard to achieve9. We can learn from the text that we may forget the useless information___________.A. at least 24 hours laterB. at least 12 hours laterC. at least six hours laterD. about one hour later10. When you try to remember the things you’ve previously learned, you can_________ .A. simply recall all of them easilyB. hardly remember them most timesC. recall none of themD. recall a few of them11. If you want to remember what you have learned, you'd better___________ .A. review them as often as possibleB. be good at math and thinkingC. store as much knowledge as possibleD. strengthen them right awayDStore Scent (香味)What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music? But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’intention to purchase increased by 80 percent. When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce电子商务) has opened upfamous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this. Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.12. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand stores?A.Friendly assistants. B.Unique scents.C.Soft background music. D.Attractive window display.13. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .A.show the advantages of brick-and-mortar storesB.urge shop assistants to change their attitudeC.push stores to use sights and soundsD.introduce the rise of e-commerce14. The underlined word “destination”in Paragraph 5 means _______ .A.a platform that exhibits goodsB.a spot where travelers like to stayC.a place where customers love to goD.a target that a store expects to meet15. The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .A.compare and evaluate B.examine and assessC.argue and discuss D.inform and explain第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。

ABecause Skyler and Kreed are speechless teens with autism (自闭症), making friends hasn’t always been easy for them. Now that they have each other, their friendship is stronger than what any word could ever describe.Aside from having autism, 14-year-old Skyler is currently deaf and is losing his sight. He also has no effective means to communicate. Kreed, 17, uses a device to communicate and has multiple medical conditions. Once Kreed learned Skyler was also speechless, their friendship began.“We were able to explain to Kreed that Skyler is deaf and also speechless like him,”Kreed’s mother, Erin Polk, said. “He seemed to understand and ever since then has wanted to be with Skyler and calls him his best friend.”The best friends, who live down the street from each other, hang out just like typical teenagers. They eat pizza and French fries and watch movies together. They also give each other a helping hand.“Kreed will help Skyler by leading him to places he is afraid to walk into,”Polk said. “We think his lack of good sight makes it scary for him in new places, so Kreed will always offer his hand to help him through those times.”For Kreed, his best friend role has given him confidence. According to his mom, being able to help others helps him as well.“Skyler has given Kreed more social confidence. By having a friend, he can 100 percent be himself and finally to be able to actually help another peer rather than being the person always helped,”she said.Even though they're speechless, the teens communicate in their own way by giving certain looks or connecting through touch. Kreed doesn’t mind if Skyler gets close to him or touches him, which seems to please Skyler. According to Polk's blog, the teens simply want to be around each other. It's clear that something unites Kreed and Skyler, but it's more than their autism or speechless communication. It's their beautiful friendship --- that clearly has no boundaries.16. From the passage, we can learn that Skyler and Kreed ______.A. have something in commonB. are of the same ageC. are unable to see each otherD. have no ability to communicate17. How does Kreed help Skyler?A. By taking him where he dare not go alone.B. By giving him good advice on where to go.C. By taking him to the places where he used to go.D. By getting rid of his scare on the way to school.18. According to his mother, by helping Skyler, Kreed ______.A. has gained confidenceB. is also benefitedC. is able to communicate betterD. is more outgoing19. We can infer that in Skyler and Kreed’s culture, it is the custom for people ______.A. to touch each other a lot in small talkB. to talk to each other in close distanceC. to avoid eye contact while chattingD. to keep their distance while chattingBGirls do better at schoolAround the world, girls do better than boys at school. These are the findings of a recent study that looked at the test results of 1.5 million 15-year-olds in 74 regions across the globe. The level of gender equality in those regions made no difference to the results. Other causes, such as the income level of the region also had little impact on the findings. In only three regions –Colombia, Costa Rica and the Indian state Himachal Pradesh –was the opposite with boys doing better. So what are the causes of girls’stronger performance? In the UK, girls outperform boys in exams that are taken at the age of 15 or 16, called GCSEs(普通中等教育证书). According to education expert Ian Toone, this is down to the way girls and boys are brought up. “Boys are encouraged to be more active from an early age, whereas the restless movements of baby girls are calmed…Hence, girls develop the skill of sitting still for longer periods of time, which is useful for something like studying for GCSEs."He goes on to say that boys often get together in larger groups than girls. Because of this they are more likely to be influenced by peer(同龄人) pressure and develop a gang mentality (帮派心态). He says that GCSEs require a lot of personal work and are not viewed as 'cool' in a childish culture. This is backed up by research in the UK that says girls are out-performing boys at the age of five. So what is the answer? Should girls and boys be educated separately? Or do exams and school curricula need to be changed to better reflect boys’skills? These are the questions facing educators in many countries.20. What are the two things that made little or no difference to the results?A. Gender equality and intelligence.B. Gender equality and income level.C. Income level and feelings.D. Income level and intelligence.21. According to Ian T oone, girls do better at school than boys because girls ______.A. study harderB. are clevererC. can sit still longerD. are more restless22. What does Ian T oone say can influence boys?A. Gang mentality.B. Personal work.C. Peer pressure.D. Childish culture.23. What could be changed to include the skills boys have?A. Exams and school curricula.B. Ways of education and evaluation.C. Outdoor activities and performances.D. Separate education and different curricula.CWhat will the future be like? Good or bad? A lot of science-fiction writing imagines a world which is dark and scary. In Blade Runner, Harrison Ford hunts robotsin a chaotic (混乱的) Los Angeles. Planet of the Apes shows a hopeless future for humankind. There's a word to describe the kind of future world which often appears in science fiction: dystopia. It means an imagined place where things are unpleasant or bad. The opposite is utopia. But does tomorrow's world have to be so disappointing? No. A new project wants to use the power of science fiction to inspire people to create a better future. Project Hieroglyph brings together writers, scientists, engineers and artists to create optimistic stories about things which really could happen in the next 50 years. It's just a matter of making an effort. Experts say it's easier to create a dystopia than write a feel-good story. There's more conflict in a world full of problems, and stories are interesting when there are a lot of problems to solve. No challenge, no story! But the project produced a book with some promising plots. One of them is about environmentalists who fight to stop entrepreneurs (创业者) from building the first hotel in Antarctica. Well, there's conflict there and it seems reasonable, so it could be a good story. But will these stories actually change anything or just keep us entertained? Ed Finn, the book's editor, thinks the former. He says: "A good science-fiction story can be very powerful. It can inspire hundreds, thousands, millions of people to do something that they want to do."The influence of science fiction can already be seen in modern research, saysProfessor Braden Allenby. He asks: "Why are people working on, for example, invisibility cloaks (斗篷)? Well, it's Harry Potter, right?"Time will tell how far we can go. Let's dream big and think outside the box. Who knows the wonderful things we can come up with?24. The underlined word “utopia”in paragraph 2 most probably means “______’.A. a real world where people can do anything they likeB.an imagined place where things are unpleasant or badC.an imaginary perfect world where everyone is happyD. a wild and terrible place where no one can live happily25. Experts say it’s easier to create a dystopia than a feel-good story because ______.A. a dystopia needs less imaginationB. a feel-good story is more interestingC. there is no conflict in a feel-good storyD. there are more problems to solve in a dystopia26. Professor Braden Allenby takes “invisibility cloaks”as an example ______.A.to cause readers’attentionB.to amuse science fiction readersC.to introduce a science fiction storyD.to show the influence of science fiction27. What is the best title for the passage?A. What is science fiction?B. Can science fiction help us?C. What will man do in the future?D. Shall we live a better life in the future?DFour out of the 48 self-driving cars on public roads in California have been involved in accidents in the last eight months, according to the state's Department of Motor Vehicles. The agency began issuing permits for the testing of self-driving vehicles in September 2014.Three of the four cars belonged to Google, the fourth to parts supplier Delphi. Both firms denied their vehicles had been at fault.Under Californian law, details of car accidents remain secret. However, Google said its driverless cars had never been the cause of an accident and that the majority of "minor fender-benders(擦撞)" had been in the form of rear-end(后尾) collisions from other drivers."Safety is our highest priority. Since the start of our programme six years ago, we've driven nearly a million miles automatically, on both freeways and city streets, without causing a single accident," said a spokesperson.Delphi told the BBC its vehicle was hit while still at a crossroads and was in human driving mode at the time."A police report indicates the fault of the accident is with the second vehicle, notDelphi. No-one was hurt in the incident," said a spokesperson. An unknown source told the Associated Press that two of the accidents occurred while the vehicles were occupied by human drivers, and all four vehicles were going very slowly at the time of the collisions.Chris Urmson, director of Google's self-driving car programme, wrote in a blog post that there have been 11 accidents involving Google cars since the project began six years ago but not one has been caused by one of its vehicles."Rear-end crashes are the most frequent accidents in America, and often there's little the driver in front can do to avoid getting hit," he said.28.
