Situations, however, don't always lend themselves to easy gift giving. To help, we asked relationship advice coaches Leah Ingram, author of “Gifts Anytime: How to Find the PerfectPresent for Any Occasion,”and Scot McKay, founder of X and Y Communications, a dating-coach service, on gifting in awkward situations.1.What do you do when one person has more money than the other?“In those situations there has to be some conversation,” McKay says. If you're the one with less money, you want to make sure the recipient is aware of your money limits; if you're the one with more money, you want to make sure the recipient doesn't think you're expecting the equal gift in return. And McKay warns, “If you're giving with the expectation of getting in return, something's already wrong with the relationship.”2.If someone's birthday is right around the holidays, do you buy one or two gifts?McKay says that he would absolutel y buy two gifts. “You can't shortchange people, especially if they bought you a Christmas present and a birthday present.” It's not the person's fault for being born around the holidays.3.What if you really, truly can't think of a gift to get someone?“Ask,”McKay says. “Talk.” Simply asking what someone's interests are and searching for it online will point you in the right direction. And be creative. “If someone's into basketball, I don't think you buy them a basketball. Find something that's unique and basketball-related that shows you put a little bit of thought into it.”It doesn't need to be expensive, he adds, just thoughtful.1.What is the best title of the passage?A.Gift-Giving Politeness for Tricky SituationsB.How to Find the Perfect Present for Any OccasionC.How to Give One Gifts Who Has More MoneyD.How to Give One Gifts Whose Birthday around the Holidays2.What does the underlined word “recipient” mean?A.One who has more money.B.One who has less money.C.One who receives the gift.D.One who gives the gift.3.Which is TRUE of the following statements according to the passage?A.Giving gifts to others is never an easy thing.B.One usually expects something in return when he gives gifts to others.C.You can certainly buy one gift for one whose birthday is around the holiday.D.The gift you buy doesn't have to be expensive, but you should put some thought into it.4.What would McKay absolutely buy two gifts for?A.One for his friend and the other for himself.B.One for his friend's birthday and the other for his holiday.C.One for his friend and the other for his friend's wife.D.One for his friend and the other for his family.5.What gift can never be wrong?A.An expensive gift.B.A cheap gift.C.An interesting gift.D.A gift to the person's interest and unique.BBrian Greene, a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, has created an online science education platform. He tries t o “build a bridge” with things you know about, and then “bring you across that bridge to the strange place of modern physics”.Recently I had a chance to ask Greene about wormholes (a hole which some scientists think might exist, connecting parts of space and time that are not usually connected), time travel andwormhole and prevented my parents from meeting? “Most of us believe that the universe makes sense,” Greene said. “Although there are several interesting theories about time travel,” he added, “the laws of physics would probably prevent something so illogical from taking place. The good news is that the time paradox (悖论) is open for future physicists to solve.”When asked how physics could become more exciting for kids, Greene said that books by Stephen Weinberg, Leonard Susskind, and other physicists, “make it a great time for people who want to learn about big ideas but aren't yet ready, perhaps, to learn math.”When I pointed out that some students still might find physics boring, Greene said that the key is to teach them about things that are strange. “The basic stuff is important,”Greene said.“But I think it's also really important to describe the mor e modern ideas, things like black holes and the Big Bang. If kids have those ideas in mind, then at least some of them will be excited to learn all the details.”Greene has followed Albert Einstein's lead in trying to solve the mysteries of the universe. 高中英语译林版必修5:Unit 3 课时跟踪练(一) Welcome to the unit & Reading含解析

课时跟踪练(一) Welcome to the unit & Reading Ⅰ.阅读理解APlant cloning has been an agricultural technique used by farmers and gardeners for centuries. Grafting (嫁接) is a common form of plantcloning. Many plants in nature actually clone themselves andreproduce asexually.Cloned plants are much more predictable than normal plants, so theiryield (产量) is more reliable. Cloned plants also reproduce faster, limiting the amount of time between planting and harvesting. It is also often cheaper to produce seeds through cloning than through traditional methods. Plants can essentially be optimized so that farmers or individual growers always have the best seeds available. With more yield at a faster rate, farms can produce more food for more people while decreasing overall costs.Cloning can be used to wipe out diseases that previously killed off entire fields of crops. This would make plants immune (免疫的) to the kinds of diseases that farmers and gardeners around the world fear each year. Crop failures due to disease and virus could become a thing of the past. Also, plants that are near extinction can be brought back to life through cloning.Through cloning scientists can develop “super” fruits and vegetables of superior nutritional quality. This could make for a healthier population overall. This is already being done through selective pollination (授粉), and genetic cloning could take it to the next level.By plant cloning we have a population of identical plants and all these plants equally suffer from the same diseases, but in nature the weak would die and the strong would survive. While there are some dangers to consider with plant cloning, there are plenty of benefits that could prove vital to the propagation (繁衍) of the human species.语篇解读:本文主要讲了克隆植物的好处:增加农作物产量、提高植物的免疫力、提高水果和蔬菜的质量等。

Her Internet access was locked — remotely — to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was: Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting_edge and a key to encourage honesty in the booming field of online education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid — that students haven't just searched the Internet to get the right answers.Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of “open online courses”. Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field, spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among them are programs that check students' identities using personal information, such as the telephone numbers they once used.Other programs can produce unique exams by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at the same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, term papers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.1.Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?A.To correct her typing mistakes.B.To find her secrets in the room.C.To prevent her from slowing down.D.To keep her from dishonest behaviors.2.The underlined expression “cutting edge” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.A.advanced techniqueB.sharpening toolC.effective ruleD.dividing line3.For Internet universities, exams and diplomas will be valid if ________.A.they can attract potential studentsB.they can defeat academic cheatingC.they offer students online helpD.they offer many online courses4.Some programs can find out possible cheaters by ________.A.checking the question answering speedB.producing a large number of questionsC.scanning the Internet test questionsD.giving difficult test questions5.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A.The Advantages of Online ExamsB.The High-tech Methods in Online CoursesC.The Fight against Cheating in Online EducationD.The War against the Booming of Online EducationBAcross Europe, young people are doing the same calculations (计算):pay their way through three or four years of higher education for uncertain returns, or take their chances without a degree.Giulia is 20 years old.She is in her second year at Sapienza University in Rome, studying communication science, but has decided to drop out.Is this because she chose the wrong subject? No — like many other students in Italy, she simply no longer believes that her degree will help her to find a job.Not only has the financial crisis left many facing an uncertain future, but the education system itself is believed to be useless.According to the latest report from the national committee for university grading, less than 60% of pupils with high-school diplomas enrolled (入学) at an Italian university, the lowest percentage for 30 years.Entry-level salaries for graduates are shrinking, and yet a degree is still a big advantage in the fight against unemployment.Among 25-to 29-year-old graduates in the European Union, unemployment rose from 7% to 9.2% between 2008 and 2011, while among people with only basic education it went from 16.1% to 24.3%.However, in countries such as Italy, a university degree may be a risky investment (投资):Italy's universities are ranked among the lowest in Europe, as only 76.6% of graduates find work, compared with an EU average of 82.3%.Many students will be well into their studies before they realize that they have little competitive advantage to show for their efforts. In France, the BA (文学学士学位) from public universities is now considered so inferior that it is almost required by rule to continue on to a master's.So a university education is worth it?Students in Britain appear to be yes.Despite the rising of many tuition fees this autumn, university application numbers have not fallen that much. The UK universities remain popular with candidates from the rest of the world.6.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Is a university education still worth the time and money?B.Are the Europeans tired of university education?C.Are the job prospects in Europe bright?D.Is no way found to afford the high tuition fees?7.The author takes Giulia as an example in order to ________.A.show girls dislike staying in college for longB.prove innocence is the virtue for womenC.express the present situation in EuropeD.criticize the Roman government8.It can be inferred from the third paragraph that ________.A.Italian universities face a crisis of admitting newstudentsB.many high-school students decide to go abroadC.graduates will strike to have their salaries raisedD.people with basic education are popular9.The underlined word “inferior” in the passage means “________”.A.important B.hopefulC.useless D.popular答案:Ⅰ.1.解析:考查turn的短语辨析。

Although I have no hopes of ever skiing that way, I do dream of living with abandon. I believe that men and women through the ages who have led successful lives have captured these secrets of living life to the fullest.1.Have a self you respect. This means having a deep sense of responsibility for your thoughts and actions. It means keeping your word, and being faithful to self, family and work. It means believing in what you do and working hard. It means setting your own standards, and not paring yourself to others. It's not a question of being better than someone else; respect and integrity demand that you be better than you thought you could be.2.Turn disappointments into strengths. Individuals who live with abandon have discovered that personal trials make them more sensitive and loving, while building character. They have learned that achievements worth remembering are stained (给…染色) with the blood of diligence and marked with the scars of disappointment. The pages of history are filled with the heroic stories of men and women who overcame disabilities and difficulties to demonstrate victorious spirits. Raise him in extreme poverty, and you have an Abraham Lincoln. Make her blind and deaf, and you have a Helen Keller.3.Enjoy life's process, not just life's rewards. We live in a goal-centered society that wantsproblems solved now. We want three-minute coffee, one-hour dry cleaning, and instant success. It was really almost by accident — Orren played in a friend's house whose family had chickens, and he became interested in the animals immediately. Later, he started volunteering every Saturday at a local farm; within a few months the farm owner suggested that Orren get a few chicks of his own.“I don't know what it was, but something caught my interest,” says Orren, now 14. Today Orren has 23 chickens, four ducks, and 250,000 bees. His happy chickens lay a lot of healthy eggs, which he sells all the year round. He became a vegetarian (素食者) after he learned about the cruelty and negative environmental effects of factory farms. In his diary he writes about raising happy chickens and bees, food and healthy eating, farming, and generally making the world a better place. “Farming affects our earth more than anything else,”says Orren. “It's something you have to do correctly, or it will ruin our planet. It's often ignored, but for me, learning about where my food comes from has been really interesting.”In fall 2009, Orren started a farm club at his school. “I wanted to get people to learn more about farming and what fun it is,” he says.Orren's passion (热情) for farming and other types of animals continues to grow. He went to the Essex Country Bee School in early 2010 to learn about beekeeping. Orren now has three beehives (蜂箱) of happy bees. In the summer of 2011, Orren started to sell his honey, BeeHappy, to local stores. Next, he wants to raise sheep and goats. “I know a lot more about the environment and how farming affects it, but I still have a lot to learn,”says Orren. “I want to keep doing all of this as I get older.”1.Orren became interested in chickens when ________.A.he saw chickens lay eggsB.he raised some chickens by himselfC.he got some chickens from a farm ownerD.he visited a friend who had chickens2.Orren started a farm club at his school in order to ________.A.collect money for his farm clubB.employ people to raise animals for himC.attract people to buy his productsD.help people learn more about farming3.What can we learn about Orren from the text?A.He has raised sheep and goats.B.He sells not only eggs but chickens.C.He is concerned about the environment.D.He became a vegetarian under the influence of his friend.4.What is the right order of the events related to Orren?a.He started a farm club.b.He sold his bee honey.c.He fell in love with chickens.d.He volunteered at a local farm.e.He studied in the Essex Country Bee School.A.d, c, a, e, b B.d, c, b, a, eC.c, d, b, a, e D.c, d, a, e, b5.What is the best title for this passage?A.A rich farm ownerB.A great chicken keeperC.It all began with the chickensD.Raising chickens pollutes the environmentⅢ.任务型阅读A few years ago I received a postcard from a friend Jackson, who wrote, “I am skiing with abandon!”I believe he meant he was skiing skillfully, joyfully, peacefully and confidently. It means setting your own standards, and not comparing yourself to others. But to live with abandon, we must live one day at a time, enjoying the little victories, realizing that life is an endless journey in self-discovery and personal fulfillment.4.Become involved in something bigger than yourself. I do not believe you will live happily if you set out to live life for yourself alone. Choose a cause bigger than you are and work at it in a spirit of excellence. It will become a part of you as you see your goals through to the end. Measure success not by what you've done, but what you could do.Title:(1)________ of enjoying lifeⅠ.1.解析:此处考查“hear+宾语+do/doing/done”结构。

With the holidays just around the corner, you're probably starting to think about gifts. Situations, however, don't always lend themselves to easy gift giving. To help, we asked relationship advice coaches Leah Ingram, author of “Gifts Anytime: How to Find the Perfect Present for Any Occasion,” and Scot McKay, founder of X and Y Communications, a dating-coach service, on gifting in awkward situations.
1.What do you do when one person has more money than the other?
“In those situations there has to be some conversation,” McKay says. If you're the one with less money, you want to make sure the recipient is aware
of your money limits; if you're the one with more money, you want to make sure the recipient doesn't think you're expecting the equal gift in return. And McKay warns, “If you're giving with the expectation of getting in return, something's already wrong with the relationship.”
2.If someone's birthday is right around the holidays, do you buy one or two gifts?
McKay says that he would absolutely buy two gifts. “You can't shortchange people, especially if they bought you a Christmas present and a birthday present.” It's not the person's fault for being born around the holidays.
3.What if you really, truly can't think of a gift to get someone?
“Ask,” McKay says. “Talk.” Simply asking what someone's interests are and searching for it online will point you in the right direction. And be creative. “If someone's into basketball, I don't think you buy them a basketball. Find something that's unique and basketball-related that shows you put a little bit of thought into it.” It doesn't need to be expensive, he adds, just thoughtful.
1.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Gift-Giving Politeness for Tricky Situations
B.How to Find the Perfect Present for Any Occasion
C.How to Give One Gifts Who Has More Money
D.How to Give One Gifts Whose Birthday around the Holidays
2.What does the underlined word “recipient” mean?
A.One who has more money.。
