第Ⅰ卷第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)略第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)AMy color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.21. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?A.He got an older model than he had expected.B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken.C.He could have bought it at a lower price.D.He failed to find any movie shows on it.22. Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1?A.ended all their programsB.provided fewer channelsC.changed to commercialsD.showed all-night movies23. How did the author finally get this TV set working again?A.By shaking and hitting itB.By turning it on and offC.By switching channelsD.By having it repaired24. are some letters from our readers.■Yes,many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders.People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to themobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让)them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision. The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be,at least for the moment,in worlds of their own that are,to them, much more important than the welfare of others.﹣﹣Michael Horan■I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists (Viewpoints,May 29).I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used. The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的)jacket and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.﹣﹣Carol Harvey■Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians),ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists? It's about time they had to be registered and insured,so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle,or cause an accident,at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim.﹣﹣JMLWrite to Viewpoints of the newspaper.56.Michael Horan wrote the letter mainly to show that.A.drivers should be polite to went something like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,"No,thanks.I've got a good horse under me."The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水)system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12feet.This of course created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors,or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small wood﹣frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six﹣story brick building? That's where George Pullman came in.He had developed some house﹣moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶)beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10jackscrews.At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.61.The author mentions the joke to show.A.horses were fairly useful in inspected at any time ﹣﹣with no warning.Inspections were a regular part of lighthouse (灯塔)living, and a keeper's reputation depended on results.A few times each year,an inspector arrived to look over the entire light station. The inspections were supposed to be a surprise, but keeper sometimes had advance notice.Once lighthouses had telephones, keepers would call each other to warn that the inspector was approaching. After boats began flying special flags noting the inspectoraboard, the keeper's family made it a game to see who could notice the boat first. As soon as someone spotted the boat, everyone would do last﹣minute tidying and change into fancy clothes. The keeper then scurried to put on his dress uniform and cap.Children of keepers remember inspectors wearing white gloves to run their fingers over door frames and windowsills looking for dust.Despite the serious nature of inspections, they resulted in some funny moments.Betty Byrnes remembered when her mother did not have time to wash all the dishes before an inspection. At the time, people did not have dishwashers in their homes. In an effort to clean up quickly,Mrs.Byrnes tossed all the dishes into a big bread pan, covered them with a cloth and stuck them in the oven.If the inspector opened the oven door,it would look like bread was baking.he never did.One day,Glenn Furst's mother put oil on the kitchen floor just before the inspector entered their house.Like floor wax,the oil made the floors shiny and helped protect the wood. This time, though, she used a little too much oil. When the inspector extended his hand to greet Glenn's mother,he slipped on the freshly oiled surface."He came across that floor waving his arms like a young bird attempting its first flight,"Glenn late wrote. After he steadied himself,he shook Glenn's mother's hand, and the inspection continued as though nothing had happened.66.What does Paragraph I tell us about the inspection at the light station?A.It was carried out once a year.B.It was three kinds of print dictionaries:pocket, desk, and unabridged. You should also know the copyright date of your dictionary, and check is special features.A pocket dictionary is small.Generally,it contains no more than 75000entries,making it hardly to carry to class and efficient to use. However,a pocket dictionary doesn't contain enough entries to be adequate for college reference homework. In addition, the information about each word in a pocket dictionary is generally limited.A desk dictionary is medium sized, generally containing over 100,000entries as well as extra features. For college work, you should own a current deskdictionary. An unabridged dictionary is a complete dictionary.Abridged dictionaries, such as pocket and desk dictionaries, are shortened.Because unabridged dictionaries contain nearly all English words, they are large and heavy. They are often used by schools and libraries. If the copyright date of your current dictionary shows that it was published five or more years ago, consider investing in a more recent edition.English is a dynamic language that admits new words and recognizes changes in meaning, spelling, and usage of familiar words. This is reflected in an up﹣to﹣date dictionary. In selecting a dictionary, check the features it offers besides vocabulary definitions. Many editions contain signs, symbols and foreign words. Some also contain CD﹣ROMs and access students, free periods are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework, instead many are on their phones and talking, making it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any.As a senior next year,I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects. Our school offers many classes. Now is the time to experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don't try it.In my 8th grade,I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement;so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art.One of the projects was to build a clay pot,but I built mine incorrectly,so it broke in the kiln (窑).I found out that I have no artistic ability at all,and now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year.I was able to try new activities and test my ability.Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things!College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.Half of all college students change their major at some point.By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take.So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. The classes we choose can impact us in future.Taking optional subjects will enrich our mind.It will also show colleges we are diverse students.81.How should we use our extra periods in the author's opinion?(No more than 9words)(2marks)82.Why does the author think we should experiment in different fields of study?(No more than 17words)(2marks)83.Why did the clay pot show the author's lack of artistic ability?(No more than 10words)(3marks)84.According to the author, how will taking optional subjects was when we were returning home __________ I realized what a good feeling it was to have helped someone in trouble.()A.which B.that C.where D.how【分析】当我到家的时候,我才意识到帮助了陷入麻烦的人的感觉是多么美好啊.【解答】强调句型为It is+被强调部分+that…. 见到It is开头的句子,可以假设其为强调句型,用that代入,然后去掉it is和that,剩余部分构成完整的句子则强调句型成立,故选B.22.(1分)(2015•湖南)As you go through this book, you __________ that each of the millions of people who lived through World War II had a different experience.()A.will find B.found C.had found D.have found【分析】当你浏览这本书时,你就会发现经历过第二次世界大战的成千上万人中的每一个人都有不同的经历.【解答】答案:A 因为在as,when,as soon as 等引导的时间状语从句中,当主句是将来时态时,从句用一般现在时代替.所以主句用将来时.A项是一般将来时,符合题意,故选A项.;B项是过去式;C项是过去完成时;D项是现在完成时,都应排除.23.(1分)(2015•湖南)Only after talking to two students __________ that having strong motivation is one of the biggest factors in reaching goals.()A.I did discover B.did I discoverC.I discovered D.discovered【分析】在和两个学生交谈之后,我才意识到拥有强烈的动机是实现目标的最大因素之一.【解答】答案为Bonly位于句首时,后接after为首的介词短语,主句要用部分倒装,结合从句意思应用一般过去时,故选B.24.(1分)(2015•湖南)Video games can be a poor influence if __________ in the wrong hands.()A.to leave B.leaving C.leave D.left【分析】电脑游戏可能会有不好的影响,如果它们被操作不当.【解答】答案:D由于Video games和leave之间是被动关系,故用被动语态. 所以选D项.25.(1分)(2015•湖南)I wasn't able to hide my eagerness when I __________,"What do you wish me to do now?"()A.ask B.have asked C.am asking D.asked【分析】我不能隐藏我的渴望,当我问道,"你现在希望我做些什么?"【解答】答案D. 本句的主句用的是一般过去时,所以从句也应该用一般过去时,故选D.26.(1分)(2015•湖南)You have to know __________ you're going if you are to plan the best way of getting there.()A.what B.that C.where D.who【分析】句意为:如果你计划到达那儿的最好的方式,你得知道你要去哪里.【解答】答案:C.本题考查宾语从句的连接词,从句中不缺主语、宾语或者表语,缺少状语,所以用连接副词,所以选择where.27.(1分)(2015•湖南)It is important to remember that success __________ a sum of small efforts made each day and often __________ years to achieve.()A.is;takes B.are;takes C.are;take D.is;take【分析】成功是每天做的一点小努力的总和,而且经常要花费多年的时间才能实现,记住这点很重要.【解答】答案:Aand并列两个分句,前一个是主、从复合句,宾语从句的主语是success,为不可数名词,谓语用单数,这样排除B、C两项;后一个分句省略了主语success,谓语仍用第三人称单数,又排除D项,故选A.28.(1分)(2015•湖南)He must have sensed that I __________ him.He suddenly glanced at me and said quietly,"Why are you staring at me like that?"()A.would look at B.looked atC.was looking at D.am looking at【分析】他当时一定感觉到我在看他. 故选C.29.(1分)(2015•湖南)It is a truly delightful place,__________ looks the same as it must have done 100 years ago with its winding streets and pretty cottages.()A.as B.where C.that D.which【分析】这确实是一个令人愉快的地方,这里的蜿蜒小路和美丽的农舍看起来一定和100年前的一模一样.【解答】答案:D 从句子表面看,此句有逗号,又没有连词,说明是一个非限制性定语从句. 由于that不引导非限制性定语从句,又排除C项.as引导定语从句时,常与the same…as,as…as,such…as 等连用,或用于as is reported/expected/known等句式.which可以引导非限制性定语从句,在从句中作主语、宾语等.故选D项.30.(1分)(2015•湖南)When the clerk saw a kind face wrinkled in an apologetic smile, she stood rooted to the ground,__________whether to stay or leave.()A.wondering B.wonder C.to wonder D.wondered【分析】当这个职员看到一张满是皱纹的善良脸庞上露出的歉意微笑时,她就像生了根似的站在那里,不知道是走还是留.【解答】题干中的主语she与动词wonder 之间构成逻辑上的主谓关系,即主动意思. 题干中主句的谓语动词stood时态是一般过去式,如果要表示一个并列的动作,动词wonder则需与stood保持一致,用一般过去式wondered,但题干中又缺少一个并列连词链接这两个动作,所以B、D都错误.31.(1分)(2015•湖南)Always __________ in mind that your main task is to get this company running smoothly.()A.to keep B.to have kept C.keep D.have kept【分析】一定要记住你的主要任务是让公司正常地运转.【解答】答案:C keep in mind 为固定短语,意思是"记住".由于祈使句的结构要遵循"祈使句,无主语,动词原形作谓语"这一原则,所以选B.32.(1分)(2015•湖南)I had a strong desire to reach in and play with the toy,but __________ thankfully by the shop window.()A.am held back B.held backC.hold back D.was held back【分析】我极其渴望进到商店去玩那个玩具,但是幸亏被橱窗挡住了.【解答】答案D.根据前面句中的had可知,时态是一般过去时,hold与主语构成逻辑上的被动关系,因此用一般过去时的被动语态,故选D.33.(1分)(2015•湖南)__________ the job takes a significant amount of time, most students agree that the experience is worth it.()A.If only B.After C.Although D.In case【分析】尽管这项工作要花大量的时间,但是大多数学生认为去体验一番还是值得的.【解答】答案C.A选项"但愿,要是…就好了"主要用在虚拟语气中,用以表达强烈的愿望或非真实条件;B选项"在…之后(引导时间状语从句)";D选项"以防,万一(引导条件状语从句)"常用为"in case+句子或in case of+名词";C选项"虽然,尽管(引导让步状语从句)";根据句意和逻辑关系可推知这里是由although引导的让步状语从句.C项符合语境,故选C.34.(1分)(2015•湖南)Sometimes I act as a listening ear for fellow students __________what is bothering them.()A.to talk over B.talked overC.talk over D.having talked over【分析】句意:有时我充当一个倾听者来倾听我的同学们讨论他们的烦心事.【解答】答案A.

The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of cliff( 悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.Her owner Mike Holden panicked and celled the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds . Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search.Three days later, a hurricane hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country. For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken . Then, one day, the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holder if he would like his dog bark.A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting desperately on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collectJudy. The dog had initially been knocked unconscious(失去知觉的)but had survived by drinking water from a fresh scream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge. “The dog was very thin and hungry,” Steve Tregear said , “It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,” he added. It was ,as Mr. Holden admitted, “a minor miracle(奇迹)”.50. Coming Back from the Dead.CThe production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business, but, unfortunately, full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of, certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance. On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds an d other special(物种) that depend on the trees’ flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many species are quickly dying out. On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens(威胁)human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests' plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world's groundwater. Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园)could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world's climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic(酸性的) soil conditions. It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.54. What can we learn about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4?A. It limits the spread of new growing techniques.B. It leads to air pollution and global warming.C. It slows down the loss of shade trees.D. It improves local soil conditions.55. The purpose of the text is to .A. entertainB. advertiseC. instructD. persuade56. Where does this text probably come from ?A. An agricultural magazine.B. A medical journal.C. An engineering textbook.D. A tourist guide.57. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole textDParents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades. Other forms of prenatal involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic. The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools except them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.Keith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the tasks." They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice."Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents ", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success." A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives."58. The underlined expression "parental involvement " in Paragraph 1 probably means .A. parents' expectation on children's healthB. parents' participation in children's educationC. parents' control over children's lifeD. parents' plan for children's future59.What is the major finding of Robinson's study ?A. Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way.B. Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.C. Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.D. Parents are not able to help with children’s homework.60. The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should .A. help children realize the importance of schoolingB. set a specific life goal for their childrenC. spend more time improving their own livesD. take a more active part in school management第二节根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, "No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me."The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building? That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each sectionof roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to cleanthe polluted river.61. The author mentions the joke to show ______.A. horses were fairly useful in ChicagoB. Chicago's streets were extremely muddyC. Chicago was very dangerous in the springD. the Chicago people were particularly humorous62. The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to_______.A. get rid of the street dirtB. lower the Chicago RiverC. fight against heavy floodsD. build the pipes above ground63. The underlined word "hoist" in Paragraph 4 means "_______".A. changeB. liftC. repairD. decorate64. What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?A. It went on smoothly as intended.B. It interrupted the business of the hotel.C. It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.D. It separated the building from its foundation.65. The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ______.A. popular life styles and their influencesB. environmental disasters and their causesC. engineering problems and their solutionsD. successful businessmen and their achievementsCHave your parents ever inspected your room to see if you cleaned it properly Imagine having your entire houses, garage, and yard inspected at any time -- with no warning. Inspections were a regular part of lighthouse (灯塔) living, and a keeper's reputation depended on results.A few times each year, an inspector arrived to look over the entirelight station. The inspections were supposed to be a surprise, but keeper sometimes had advance notice.Once lighthouses had telephones, keepers would call each other to warn that the inspector was approaching. After boats began flying special flags noting the inspector aboard, the keeper's family made it a game to see who could notice the boat first. As soon as someone spotted the boat, everyone would do last-minute tidying and change into fancyclothes. The keeper then scurried to put on his dress uniform and cap. Children of keepers remember inspectors wearing white gloves to runtheir fingers over door frames and windowsills looking for dust.Despite the serious nature of inspections, they resulted in some funny moments. Betty Byrnes remembered when her mother did not have time to wash all the dishes before an inspection. At the time, people did not have dishwashers in their homes. In an effort to clean up quickly, Mrs. Byrnes tossed all the dishes into a big bread pan, covered them with a cloth and stuck them in the oven. If the inspector opened the oven door, it would look like bread was baking. he never did.One day, Glenn Furst's mother put oil on the kitchen floor just before the inspector entered their house. Like floor wax, the oil made the floors shiny and helped protect the wood. This time, though, she used a little too much oil. When the inspector extended his hand to greet Glenn's mother, he slipped on the freshly oiled surface. "He came across that floor waving his arms like a young bird attempting its first flight," Glenn late wrote. After he steadied himself, he shook Glenn's mother's hand, and the inspection continued as though nothing had happened.66. What does Paragraph I tell us about the inspection at the light station?A. It was carried out once a year.B. It was often announced in advance.C. It was important for the keeper's fame.D. It was focused on the garage and yard.67. The family began making preparations immediately after ______.A. one of the members saw the boatB. a warning call reached the lighthouseC. the keeper put on the dress uniform and capD. the inspector flew special flags in the distance68. Mrs. Byrnes put the dishes in the oven because this would ______.A. result in some funB. speed up washing themC. make her home look tidyD. be a demand from the inspector69. If the inspector had opened the oven door, he would have seen_______.A. an empty panB. many clean dishesC. pieces of baked breadD. a cloth covering something70. The inspector waved his arms ______.A. to try his best to keep steadyB. to show his satisfaction with the floorC. to extend a warm greeting to Glenn's motherD. to express his intention to continue the inspectionPart IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passageWrite NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. Not all print dictionaries are the same, as you will notice when you select one. To make a wise selection, you should know how to distinguish among three kinds of print dictionaries: pocket, desk, and unabridged. You should also know the copyright date of your dictionary, and check is special features.A pocket dictionary is small. Generally, it contains no more than 75000 entries, making it hardly to carry to class and efficient to use. However, a pocket dictionary doesn't contain enough entries to be adequate for college reference homework. In addition, the information about each word in a pocket dictionary is generally limited. A desk dictionary is medium sized, generally containing over 100,000 entries as well as extra features. For college work, you should own a current desk dictionary. An unabridged dictionary is a complete dictionary. Abridged dictionaries, such as pocket and desk dictionaries, are shortened.Because unabridged dictionaries contain nearly all English words, they are large and heavy. They are often used by schools and libraries. If the copyright date of your current dictionary shows that it was published five or more years ago, consider investing in a more recent edition. English is a dynamic language that admits new words and recognizes changes in meaning, spelling, and usage of familiar words. This is reflected in an up-to-date dictionary. In selecting a dictionary, check the features it offers besides vocabulary definitions. Many editions contain signs, symbols and foreign words. Some also contain CD-ROMs and access to special online features.Section B (10 mark.)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions accordingto the information given in the passage.Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things For most high school students, free periods are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework, instead many are on their phones and talking, making it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects. Our school offers many classes. Now is the time to experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don't try it.In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (窑). I found out that I have no artisticability at all, and now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. The classes we choose can impact us in future. Taking optional subjects will enrich our mind. It will also show colleges we are diverse students.81. How should we use our extra periods in the author's opinion?(No more than 9 words) (2 marks)________________________________________________________________________82. Why does the author think we should experiment in different fields of study?(No more than 17 words) (2 marks)________________________________________________________________________ 83. Why did the clay pot show the author's lack of artistic ability (No more than 10 words) (3 marks)________________________________________________________________________ 84.According to the author, how will taking optional subjects impact up in the future(No more than 13 words) (3 marks)________________________________________________________________________ Section C (25 marks)Directions: Write an English composition according to the instructions given below.
