AOver the years, I’ve been guilty of hastily shutting the front door to many strangers when they came knocking with the intention of selling things. But earlier this year, around Easter time, a dear friend of mine had an experience that changed my mind and perception towards these “intruders”.Linda, who recently moved to a new neighbour hood, had been housebound all week suffering from a severe case of flu when, early one morning, there was the terrible knock on her front door. Peering out the window, she saw two young ladies demurely (端庄地) holding leaflets and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today,” she muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.Coughing, she poked her head out and impatiently informed them she wasn’t the slightest bit interested in any TV whatsoever. Furthermore, she added, she was feeling quite unwell and abruptly shut the door. The ladies politely turned and left in silence.A few hours later, another knock. Linda glanced out the window and to her surprise, there were the same two ladies, back again. Really annoyed this time, she opened the door ready togive them a piece of her mind. Before she could speak, with concerned looks on their faces, these women handed Linda what looked to be a dish, saying, “We’re so sorry we disturbed you earlier. We thought you may like this homemade chicken soup. Hopefully it might make you feel a little better.”Linda was taken aback by this lovely gesture. Being new to the area, she didn’t know many neighbours or people who could assist her with shopping or errands (跑腿) so the gesture was all the more appreciated. She could only smile sheepishly and sincerely thanked them. With that, the ladies left. After she related this story to me, I thought about how touching this deed really was. Especially in today’s world where sadly, kindness and thoughtfulness seem so rare. I also realized that thinking about others and showing kindness is the real essence of love.1. What does the expression “give them a piece of her mind”in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Scold them severely.B. Drive them away.C. Refuse them directly.D. Speak out her idea.2. What can be learned about Linda from the passage?A. Linda always hastily shut the front door to many people.B. Linda was not a little interested in any TV whatsoever.C. Go to college.” It was the first time someone outside his family had spoken highly of his intelligence. It was the co-workers thatem enedhim to return to school.Several co-workers put Staton in touch with a professor atBowieStateUniversity. The professor was impressed with their conversation and persuaded the admissions board to change its former decision.Going to college forced Staton’s older brother, Reggie, to drop out. They had to move in and out of shelters, hotels and even the family car.“I know I have been made stronger. I was homeless. My family slept on the floor and we were lucky if we got more than one full meal a day. Getting a shower, food and clean clothes was an everyday struggle,” Fearce said in a speech she gave at her high school graduation ceremony. Fearce overcame her day-to-day struggles by focusing on a better day. “I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. And that helped me get through,” she told WSBTV.Fearce was determined to be a good role model for her younger sister. She found inspiration in her late grandmother, struggling with deadly diseases, who gave Fearce emotional support. In her junior and senior year, Fearce took both high school and college courses, missing out on the free meals she depended on so she could get to her college classes. Despite having to use her cellphone to study after the shelter lights were turned off at night, she not only graduated as valedictorian (毕业生代表) of her 2013 class with a 4.5 grade average, but was also given a ride scholarship—including a meal plan to Spelman College in Atlanta. After graduation, she worked full time for two years at the National Institutes for Health inBethesda,Maryland, doing research on drugs. Chelesa Fearce: A Girl of Many TalentsDAlex Wong, a junior atMarkKeppelHigh SchoolinAlhambra,California, is working hard on his application to a top college. His resume shows off his nearly straight A’s in difficult classes, experience at a summer program atStanfordUniversity, Eagle Scout project and time on the soccer team as well as the school choir. But his steady progress stopped unexpectedly this year. Aiming to open access to college-level Advanced Placement (大学预科) courses, his schoolbegan using a computer-based lottery to give out spaces. Alex got shut out of all three of the courses he requested. The new system caused anger among families whose children failed to get into AP courses, which many consider important to develop advanced skills, improve grade-point averages and allow students to earn collegecredit, saving them and their families tuition dollars. Students and parents wrote to administrators to complain, circulated a petition (请愿) and launched a Facebook group for trading classes. “I’M DESPERATE! I’LL GIVE YOU FREE FOOD,” one student, Kirk Hum, posted on the 210-member AP Flea Market Facebook group.AP classes have long been held dear by the most talented and ambitious students. But now they are seen as positive for all students who are willing to push themselves – and schools are increasingly viewing access to them as a basic educational right. But this change has brought challenges.Miracle Vitangcol, a junior atDowntownMagnetsHigh Schoolwith average grades and test scores, is failing her AP US history class. She said she can’t handle the rapid pace and volume of material she needs to remember. But she said she intends to stick it out because the class is teaching her to manage her time, take good notes and work hard. “I’m struggling to adjust,” she said. “But I keep telling myself: ‘It’s OK. You can do it. Just push yourself’.”Some critics worry that the open-access movement is pushing too many unprepared students into AP classes, as shown by higher exam failure rates over the last decade. They also fear that open enrollment (录取) policies are encouraging teachers to weaken courses and give out high grades to students who don’t deserve them. “While expanding access is generally a good thing, we need to make sure we’re not watering down the experience for the high achievers,” said Michael Petrilli, executive vice president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a Washington-based educational policy organization.12. The purpose of the new AP courses system at Alex Wong’s school is to ______.A. make sure all students get access to the AP courses they desire.B. ensure that students have a fair chance to get access to AP courses.C. improve the academic performance of students in AP courses.D. separate high achievers from average students through the new courses.13. According to the article, the AP Flea Market Facebook group is a place where ______.A. students’ parents send their complaints to school administrators.B. students share tips about saving money for college.C. students offer items to trade for the AP courses they need.D. students can find support and guidance on their AP study.14. Which of the following statements would Michael Petrilli agree with?A. Opening AP courses to all students is a bad idea.B. School administrators should maintain high academic standards for AP courses.C. High schools should stop charging students for taking AP courses.D. Access to AP courses is necessary for students applying for top American colleges.15. The author used Miracle Vitangcol’s example to show that ______.A. students need to remember too much in their AP courses.B.AP courses pose a big challenge to unprepared students.C. the secret to success in AP courses is to keep pushing yourself.D. average students don’t deserve their places in AP courses.

I have always been fascinated by the city of Atlanta. It is a place with a rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse population. One of the most interesting stories about Atlanta is its role in the Civil Rights Movement. The city was a major center for the movement, and it was hometo many influential leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis.Another fascinating aspect of Atlanta is its rapid growth and development. The city has seen tremendous expansion in recent years, with new businesses, restaurants, and entertainment venues popping up all over the place. One of the most iconic symbols of Atlanta's growth is the BeltLine, a former railway corridor that has been transformed into a network of public parks, trails, and transit. In addition to its history and growth, Atlanta is also known for its sports culture. The city is home to several professional sports teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, and Atlanta Hawks. The passion and energyof Atlanta sports fans are truly something to behold, whether you're at a football game in the fall or a baseball game in the summer.Overall, Atlanta is a city that has so much to offer. From its rich history to its modern developments, there is always something new and exciting to discover in thisvibrant and dynamic city.

美国留学金融工程MFE专业介绍MFE(金融工程硕士,或者金融数学/数量金融/计算金融等,差别都不大)是90年代新兴的交叉学科项目。

A.They ran into their mother.B.They met some generous strangers.C.They got lost while walking around the streets.D.They took advantage of people’s trust in their mother.7.What lesson did the author and her sister learn?A.Honesty is the best policy.B.What’s done can’t be undone. C.Misfortune never comes alone.D.Good advice is beyond all price. The moment the ground stops shaking after an earthquake, some people may wonder whether their pets — or wild animals for that matter — knew the disaster was coming. To get to the bottom of this question, Heiko Woith, a scientist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, and his colleagues evaluated more than 700 published reports of unusual behavior among 130 species, including insects, birds, fish, cats, dogs and cattle from 160 earthquakes. The records included all kinds of behaviors, including a tiger that reportedly got depressed before an earthquake. The researchers found that 90 percent of all reported cases happened within 62 miles of the epicenter (震中) and within 60 days of an earthquake. Then, they examined when and where foreshocks had happened in the region and concluded that it was hard to say these animals could predict the earthquake itself. They were just responding to foreshocks.“The space-time pattern of animal precursors (预兆) and foreshocks is strikingly similar,” Woith said. “From this, we concluded that the abnormal animal behavior might simply be related to foreshocks. These animals are just responding to foreshocks rather than predicting the earthquake. They don’t have super power.”Despite the vast number of incidences, good information was little and scientific evidence is lacking. “A major surprise for us was that the large majority of the published claims were built on poor observational data, which did not stand as statistical scientific proof,” Woith said.To better study whether animals can predict earthquakes, Woith and his colleagues suggested that researchers ask a number of yes-or-no questions in any upcoming experiments, including “Is the experimental setup and monitoring procedure clearly described and reproducible?” and “Is it proven that the animal behavior is really unusual?”Meanwhile, humans are working on technologies that can detect earthquakes seconds before they hit. Hopefully, we will have such devices to warn people that the earthquake is coming.8.How did Woith conduct the study?A.By analyzing former reports.B.By observing animals’ behavior.C.By collecting data in the earthquake.D.By comparing animals’ different responses.9.What is Woith’s new finding?A.Tigers become depressed easily.B.Certain animals have super power. C.Some animals can react to foreshocks.D.Animals in the same area act similarly. 10.What surprised the scientists in the study?A.All reported cases took place in the same area.B.There were too many reports about foreshocks.C.Some animals act strangely before earthquakes.D.The previous reports lack accurate data support.11.What is mainly talked about in the passage?A.How animals behave in earthquakes.B.Whether animals can predict earthquakes.C.What is the link between animals and earthquakes.D.Why people study animals’ behavior in earthquakes.二、七选五Wearing flip-flops (平底人字拖鞋) was once considered bad fashion manners. Andflip-flops are considered only for beach goers or a short, relaxing walk to the mailbox on adesigners are designing them for people. However, wearing flip-flops could be bad for our bodies and the scientific studies are there to back it up. As a rule, flip-lops are not particularly supportive shoes even if they are comfortable and cool to wear. There is actually no arch support to flip-flops. By nature of design, flip-flops aren’t exactly fit for the foot — they don’t stay on well. In order to walk without losing a shoe, people unconsciously change their ways of walking. ___13___ Some experts also warn of short-term effects. Wearing flip-flops instead of more appropriate footwear for certain activities, especially when too much walking is involved, can lead to injured feet and ankles. ___14___ This makes it more likely to slip, trip, fall, and later twist an ankle.___15___ For activities that require much walking or activity, such as shopping or gardening, consider wearing more appropriate shoes. When shopping for flip-flops, avoid the poorly made ones that can easily twist in your hands. Instead choose shoes that have a stronger, thicker, well-made sole. ___16___ Though less fashionable, these flip-flops offer some support and stability beyond the traditional ones.A.Most flip-flops lack stability.B.The right pair of flip-flops don’t have to be limited to sunny beach days.C.But flip-flops don’t have to be limited to sunny beach days.D.There are also a few varieties designed with foot health in mind.E.Over a long time, wearing them too much could lead to foot, leg and back pain. F.However, in recent years, these shoes have become much more fashion-forward. G.Without having to give up wearing flip-flops entirely, experts recommend limiting their use. I’ve heard that it’s better to give than to receive.

Atlanta is a vibrant and diverse city located in the southeastern region of the United States. As a resident of Atlanta, I can attest to the fact that this city has a lotto offer. From its rich history to its bustling nightlife, there is always something to do in Atlanta. One of the things that I love about Atlanta is its food scene. The city is known for its delicious Southern cuisine, but there are also plenty of international options as well. Some of my favorite restaurants include Mary Mac's Tea Room for classic Southern dishes like fried chicken and mac and cheese, and Buford Highway for authentic Asian cuisine.Another great thing about Atlanta is its sports culture. We have professional teams in football, basketball, baseball, and soccer, so there is always a game to watch. The Atlanta Braves baseball team even has a new stadium,SunTrust Park, which is a great place to catch a game on a warm summer night. Finally, Atlanta is a city that is constantly growing and changing. There are always new restaurants, shops, and attractions popping up, so there is never a dull moment. One of the newest additions to the city is the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile loop of parks, trails, and transit that connects neighborhoods throughout the city.
