Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. In the work environment, feedback plays a crucial role in determining employee satisfaction and performance. Constructive feedback helps employees understand what they are doing well and what they need to improve upon, leading to overall growth and development within the organization. However, providing effective feedback requires skill and tact.Effective feedback is specific and focuses on behaviors rather than personality traits. Instead of saying, “You’re lazy”, try saying, “I’ve noticed that you tend to procrastinate on tasks. It would be more beneficial if you could work on improving your time management skills.” This kind of feedback is more likely to be well received and acted upon.A key aspect of giving feedback is being timely. Feedback should be immediate and not delayed, as this ensures that the issue is fr esh in the employee’s mind and can be acted upon promptly. Waiting too long to provide feedback can result in the employee repeating the same mistake or behavior, ultimately hindering their growth.Additionally, feedback should be given in a private and confidential setting to avoid embarrassment and maintain trust. Publicly criticizing an employee can damage their self-esteem and hurt their relationship with their manager. By providing feedback in a private setting, the employee is more likely to feel supported and motivated to make positive changes.1. According to the passage, what is the purpose of constructive feedback in the work environment?A. To criticize employees for their mistakes.B. To highlight employees’ personality traits.C. To help employees understand their strengths and areas for improvement.D. To compare employees’ performance with that of their colleagues.2. What is the difference between effective and ineffective feedback?A. Effective feedback focuses on behaviors, while ineffective feedback focuses on personality traits.B. Effective feedback is delayed, while ineffective feedback is immediate.C. Effective feedback is given publicly, while ineffective feedback is given privately.D. Effective feedback is harsh, while ineffective feedback is supportive.3. Why is it important for feedback to be timely?A. To ensure that the employee feels embarrassed.B. To allow the employee time to repeat the same mistake.C. To prevent the employee from acting upon the feedback.D. To address the issue while it is fresh in the employee’s mind.4. Why should feedback be given in a private setting?A. To maintain trust and avoid embarrassment.B. To publicly criticize the employee.C. To improve the employee’s self-esteem.D. To highlight the employee’s strengths.5. In the example provided in the passage, what is a more effective way to provide feedback?A. “I’ve noticed that you’re lazy.”B. “You’re not good at time management.”C. “You tend to procrastinate on tasks.”D. “You need to improve your personality traits.”Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as those of others. It plays a key role in determining our success in both personal and professional life. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language –all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they encounter new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to confront the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we perceive ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of timidity can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to cope with a newchallenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all. These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not confront and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.16. A person is generally believed to achieve personal growth when .A.he has given up his drinking habitB.he has made great efforts in his workC.he is keen on learning anything newD.he has tried to determine where he is on his journey17. In the author’s eyes, one who views personal growth as a process would.A.succeed in climbing up the social ladderB.judge his ability to grow from his own achievementsC.face difficulties and take up challengesD.aim high and reach his goal each time18. When the author says “a new way of being” (Line 3, Para. 3)he is referring to .A. a new approach to experiencing the world B) a new way of taking risksC. a new method of perceiving ourselves D) a new system of adaptation to change19. For personal growth, the author advocates all of the following except .A.curiosity about more chances B) open-mindedness to new experiencesC) promptness in self-adaptation D) avoidance of internal fears and doubts20. What is the best title of the passage?A) A Product of Growth B) Both Aspects of GrowthC) A Process of Growth D) Growth-Product or ProcessPassage TwoQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one of life’s essentials. Eating breakfasts at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33 percent-from 8.8 million to 11.7 million-according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of America. For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arnold E.Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. “The literature,” says one researcher, Dr. Ernesto Pollitt at the University of Texas, “is poor.”21. The latest year for which figures could be obtained is ______.A) the year the author wrote the articleB) 1977C) any year between 1977 and 1983D) 198322. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that ______.A) several studies have been done in the past few yearsB) the omission of breakfast do es no harm to one’s healthC) adults have especially made studies in this fieldD) eating little in the morning is good for health23. “…nor does giving people breakfast improve performance” (in Line 13) means ______.A) anyone without breakfast does improve his performanceB) not giving people breakfast improves performanceC) having breakfast does not improve performance, eitherD) people having breakfast do improve their performances, too24. The word “literature” in the last sentence refers to _______.A) written works on a particular subjectB) stories, poems, plays, etc.C) any printed materialD) the modern literature of America25. What can be inferred from the passage is that _________.A) breakfast does not affect performanceB) Dr.Pollitt is engaged in research work at an institution of higher learningC) not eating breakfast might affect the health of childrenD) Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in LondonPassage ThreeQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. One of the strongest reasons for the raising of the school leaving age (ROSLA) has been that it will bring us nearer to the ideal of “equal opportunity”.Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the ladder of success for clever children. It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be missed out when the state system is apparently so thorough. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less rich homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately, we now have plenty of evidence that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all male 18-20 year olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left schools at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1930. One study of 5000 children from birth to 21 years old indicated that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after 16.It is clear from this and much other evidence that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes —money, social respectability, and interesting jobs, which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social circumstances. Their parents often need the extra money another wage-earner can bring in; they do not value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, “It’s up to you”.26. It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children _________.A) a more enjoyable time at school B) the same chances in societyC) the right to a better school D) higher scores in intelligence tests27. People would like to think that __________.A) equal number of poor and rich children reach universityB) those with the least money get the best educationC) intelligent children are always chosen by the systemD) only clever children do well28. Working class children are felt to be at a disadvantage because _________.A) many of the clever ones leave school earlyB) fewer go to university than ever beforeC) more than half leave school when they are 16D) fewer boys than girls stay at school after 1629. Many children leave school early because _________.A) their social circumstances make them unhappyB) they are forced to work early by their parentsC) their schooling is a dull and unhappy experienceD) their parents don’t allow them to make their own decisions30. This article shows that equal opportunity in education___________________.A) is a thing of the past B) has greatly improved our societyC) is there for those who merit it D) has not yet been achievedPassage FourQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. In recent years, a growing body of research has shown that our appetite and food intake are influenced by a large number of factors besides our biological need for energy, including our eating environment and our perception of the food in front of us.Studies have shown, for instance, that eating in front of the TV (or a similar distraction) can increase both hunger and the amount of food consumed. Even simple visual cues, like plate size and lighting, have been shown to affect portion size and consumption.A new study suggested that our short-term memory also may play a role in appetite. Several hours after a meal, people's hunger levels were predicted not by how much they’d eaten but rather by how much food they'd seen in front of them—in other words, how much they remembered eating. This disparity (盖弃)suggests the memory of our previous meal may have a bigger influence on our appetite than the actual size of the meal, says Jeffrey M. Brunstrom, a professorof experimental psychology at the University of Bristol."Hunger isn't controlled solely by the physical characteristics of a recent meal. We have identified an independent role for memory for that meal," Brunstrom says. "This shows that the relationship between hunger and food intake is more complex than we thought."These findings echo earlier research that suggests our perception of food can sometimes trick our body’s response to the food itself. In a 2011 study, for instance, people who drank the same 380-calorie (卡路里)milkshake on two separate occasions produced different levels of hunger-related hormones (荷尔蒙),depending on whether the shake’s label said it contained 620 or 140 calories. Moreover, the participants reported feeling more full when they thought they'd consumed a higher-calorie shake. What does this mean for our eating habits? Although it hardly seems practical to trick ourselves into eating less, the new findings do highlight the benefits of focusing on our food and avoiding TV and multitasking while eating. The so-called mindful-eating strategies can fight distractions and help us control our appetite, Brunstrom says.31. What is said to be a factor affecting our appetite and food intake?A) How we perceive the food we eat. B) What ingredients the food containsC) When we eat our meals. D) How fast we eat our meals.32. What would happen at meal time if you remembered eating a lot in the previous meal?A) You would probably be more picky about food.B) You would not feel like eating the same food.C) You would have a good appetite.D) You would not feel so hungry.33. What do we learn from the 2011 study?A) Food labels may mislead consumers in their purchases.B) Food labels may influence our body’s response to food.C) Hunger levels depend on one's consumption of calories.D) People tend to take in a lot more calories than necessary.34. What does Brunstrom suggest we do to control our appetite?A) Trick ourselves into eating less. B) Choose food with fewer calories.C) Concentrate on food while eating. D) Pick dishes of the right size.35. communicate face-to-face,they convey information in several ways apart from by the words they use. Thus, how often they make eye contact and how long they sustain that contact can indicate their degree of intimacy(亲密),interest in or understanding of what they are communicating verbally.Their posture(姿势)—the way they sit or stand—can reveal attention, interest, disagreement or boredom. The distance they sit or stand from one another and the angle at which they do so can suggest friendship, hostility or respect. These and other forms of nonverbal(非口头的)communication are so pervasive that we usually scarcely notice them.Their importance quickly becomes apparent(明显的),however, when for some reason they are lacking or unclear. One occasion when most people notice the importance of nonverbal communication is when they are talking on the telephone. There is an unwritten rule of telephone conversations that the listener must supply frequent and regular confirmation that he or she is listening. This is done by saying“Aha, Mmhm.Yes,I see,”and so on.Failure to do this often enough may result in the speaker interrupting him or herself to ask if the other person is“still there.”In face-to-face conversation, this is unnecessary,as attention and understanding are conveyed silently, chiefly by eye contact and posture.Another situation where the importance of nonverbal communication becomes clear is duringcross-cultural communication. It is an instructive experience to travel in a foreign country whose culture is very different from one’s own.Do men shake hands, bow, touch, point, wink, and so on,or are some or all of these behaviors considered rude? How long can eye contact be maintained without indicating something more than polite interest? How close does one stand before being disrespectful or too intimate, how far away before being thought cold or hostile?Features like these can sometimes be more important in a second language than grammatical accuracy or a good accent(口音).31.People seldom notice the importance of nonverbal communication because__________.A.it is usually lackingB.it is usually unclearC.it is too apparentD.it is too widespread32.In face-to-face communication, you can tell whether the other agrees with you or not by all thefollowing except__________.A.the frequency of his eye contact with youB.the length of his eye contact with youC.the way he sits or standsD.the way he smokes33.In telephone conversation,__________.A.the listener must agree with what the speaker is sayingB.the listener must supply words of confirmationC.the speaker must frequently ask if the listener is still thereD.the speaker must frequently ask questions to catch the listener’s attention34.For a traveler in a foreign country the more important thing than verbal communication is__________.A.a good accent of that country’s languageB.a good command of the grammar of that country’s languageC.a good knowledge of the culture of that countryD.a good knowledge of the history of that country35.According to the passage,cross-cultural communication is an__________experience.A.instructiveB.embarrassingC.excitingD.enjoyingPassage2Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being,according to a research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on(登录)less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.Researchers are puzzled over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may explain the drop in well-being,researchers hypothesized(假设).Faceless, bodiless“virtual”communication may be lesspsychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower.Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology itself;it’s about how it is used.”says psychologist Christine Riley, one of the study’s sponsors(发起人).“It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”36.It can be learned from the passage that___________.A.people having bad feelings spend more time on the InternetB.the Internet makes its users psychologically healthyC.Internet use may cause its users’depressionD.people use the Internet less frequently than before37.The fact that the Internet proved less socially healthy than television___________.A.was what the researchers had expectedB.went against the researchers’expectationC.was well understood by the researchersD.was a puzzle the researchers had solved38.According to the passage, one of the possible reasons why Internet use leads to a decline in itsusers’well-being is that___________.A.Internet users spend less time with their friends and familiesB.Internet users can’t get satisfaction from the InternetC.the Internet prevents its users from communicating with their familiesD.people can’t establish lasting relationships with others on the Internet39.In the last paragraph,Christine Riley points out that as to the decline in Internet users’well-being,___________.A.the technology itself should be held responsibleB.it is no fault of the technology itselfC.the blame lies with Internet usersD.the Net itself should take responsibility for it40.It is suggested in discussing problems caused by Internet use that___________.A.Internet users should spend less time on the InternetB.Internet users should have more conversation with their friendsC.social factors should be considered in devising applications for technologyD.a wider range of services should be made availablePassage3Banks are not ordinarily prepared to pay out all accounts;they relied on depositors(储户)not to demand payment all at the same time.If depositors should come to fear that a bank is not sound, that it cannot pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did,the bank could not pay all accounts. However,if they did not all appear at once, then there would always be funds to pay those who wanted their money when they wanted it.Mrs.Elsie Vaught has told us of a terrifying bank run that she experienced. One day in December of1925several banks failed to open in a city where Mrs.Vaught lived. The other banks anticipated a run the next day,so the officers of the bank in which Mrs.Vaught worked as a teller(出纳员)had enough funds on hand to pay off as many depositors as might apply. The officers simply instructed the tellers to pay on demand.Next morning a crowd gathered in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line convinced many that the bank could not possibly pay off everyone.People began to push and then to fight for places near the tellers’windows.Clothing was torn and limbs broken, but the jam continued for hours. The power of the panic atmosphere is evident in the fact that two tellers, though they knew that the bank was sound and could pay out all depositors, nevertheless withdrew the funds in their own accounts.Mrs.Vaught says that she had difficulty restraining herself from doing the same.41.A bank run occurs when__________.A.a bank is closed for one or more daysB.too many depositors attempt to draw out their money at one timeC.there is not enough money to pay all of its depositors at one timeD.employees of a bank take their own funds out of the bank42.What happened to some of the customers of Mrs.Vaught’s bank?A.They were injured.B.They lost their money.C.They had to leave part of their money in the bank.D.They were forced to put their money into other banks.43.The tellers in Mrs.Vaught’s bank were told to__________.A.explain why they could not pay out all depositorsB.pay out deposits as requestedC.assure customers that the bank was soundD.pay out money as slowly as possible44.The essential cause of a run on a bank is__________.A.loss of confidenceck of sufficient fundsC.crowds of peopleD.inefficient tellers45.According to the passage, the actions of the customers of Mrs.Vaught’s bank were influencedchiefly by__________.A.the ease with which they could obtain their moneyB.the confidence demonstrated by other customers of the bankC.the confidence that Mrs.Vaught demonstratedD.the failure of several other banks to openIII.Blank-filling(15%)One result of this practice is that the Japanese worker identifies closely with his company and feels__46__loyalty to it.By working hard for the company,he believes he is protecting his own future. It is not surprising that__47__to one’s company is considered a great__48__in Japan.A man is often prepared to put his firm’s interests before__49__of his immediate family. The job security__50__by this system influences the way Japanese employees__51__their work. They tend to think__52__terms of what they achieve throughout their career. This is__53__ they are not judged on how they are performing during a short period of time, perhaps when they are __54__pressure to increase company earnings. They can afford to take a longer__55__than Western workers. This marriage between the employee and the company,the__56__of lifetime employment, may explain__57__Japanese workers seem__58__to love the products their company is producing and why they are__59__to stay on after work, for little overtime pay,to__60__in earnest discussions about the quality control of their products.A.participateB.becauseC.intenseD.consequenceE.underF.virtueG.willingH.whyI.devotionJ.approachK.those L.guaranteed M.positively N.perspective O.inIV.Translation from Chinese into English(10%)61.It is said that those who are stressed or working overtime are____________________(更有可能增加体重).62.We look forward to_____________________________(被邀请出席开幕式).63.The manager never laughed;neither______________________(她也从来没有发过脾气).64.It is suggested that the air conditioner___________________________(要安装在窗户旁).65.The16-year-old girl decided to travel abroad on her own despite__________________(她父母的强烈反对).V.Writing(15%)Directions:For this part, please write a short essay on the topic of“Buying Books Online”.You should write no less than100words following the outline given below.1、网上购书成为时尚2、网上购书的优势3、我的看法Key to Vocabulary&ReadingI.Vocabulary1~5BCBAC6~10AADBA11~15ABAAD16~20DACDC21~25BADBD26~30ADCDBII.Reading Comprehension31~35DDBCA36~40CBABC41~45BABAD。

The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 36 through 40.The word “sport” first meant something that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals and birds.About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsman. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best one can earn a lot of money. For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than $3,000 year. The stars earn a lotmore. International golf and tennis champions can make more than $50,000 in a year. Of course, only a few sportsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is this: The stars can earn more money from advertising than from sport. An advertising for sports equipment does not simply say “Buy our thing”. It says “Buy the same shirt and shoes as…”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their name or a photograph of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.36. A “professional” sportsman is someone who ________.A)earns a lot of moneyB)plays a sport for a number of yearsC)likes sports very muchD)earns money by playing a sport37. If a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is encouraged to learn for the purpose of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Some students may be frustrated with teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with short written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, students should learn the material assigned. When research is assigned, the professor expects students to begin and to complete the assignment with minimum instruction. It is the student’s responsibility to find books and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works; they expect students, especially graduate students (研究生), to be able to find what they need in the library.Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not depend on themtoo much. This is different from teacher-student relationships in other countries. In the United States, professors have other duties in addition to teaching. Often they do some administrative (行政)work within their departments. In addition, they may be required to write articles and books. Therefore, the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either ask a professor for help during office hours or make an appointment(预约).21.What does t he author mean by saying that “Courses are not designed merely for students topass exams”?A)Students study hard only for exams.B)Teachers think it necessary for their students to fail exams.C)Teachers think that the only purpose of studying hard is to pass exams.D)The purpose of designing courses is not only for passing exams.22.According to the 2nd paragraph, students in the United States should .a)depend more on themselves than on professorsb)plan their time and sequence their workc)always follow the professors’ adviced)find a suitable place for studying23.If students need the advice of their teachers, they should .a)put forward their questions in classb)go to their teachers’ officec)find some excuses to see teachers at homed)turn to their teachers during the break24.Students who in the United States are considered good ones.a)pay more attention to good scoresb)have the desire to learn by themselvesc)are good at learning words by heartd)know much about computers25.American professors may be required to spend more of their time .a)knowing what is on their students’ mindb)helping students finish their assignmentsc)writing articlesd)instructing students’ researchPassage TwoA few years ago it was common to speak of a generation gap between young people and their elders. Parents said that their children did not respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In a more traditional ( 传统的) society, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and like, and often to continue the family jobs. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose jobs different from those of their parents. In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to come.26.The first paragraph tells us that .a)the problem of the generation gap draws much attention from peopleb)it is out of date to talk about generation gapc)children and parents are trying to understand each otherd)it is very important for people to frequently communicate with each other27.In a more traditional society, old people .a)have their children respect and listen to themb)do not care for their children at allc)expect their children to rebel against themd)do not live together with their children28.In American society young people .a)do not need to find jobsb)marry people younger than themc)have better education than their parentsd)leave home at an early age29.Which of the following is NOT the cause of the generation gap?a)Young people like to depend more on themselvesb)Parents do not love their children dearlyc)American society changes rapidlyd)Parents expect too much of their children.30.The main idea of the passage is .a)that the generation gap needs consideringb)when the generation gap is necessary in American societyc)why the generation gap existsd)how we can reduce the generation gapPassage ThreeValentine’s Day(圣瓦轮丁节, 情人节) was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly thought of him as my “Valentine Man”.At the age of six, on Valentine’s Day morning, I got a card signed “ Love, Dad” for the first time and a gift of a ring with a small piece of red glass. As I grew older, the gifts gave way to heart-shaped boxes filled with my favorite chocolates and always included a special card signed “ Love, Dad”. Year by year, the cards seemed less important, and I thought the valentine (圣瓦伦丁节送给异性的卡片或礼物等) would always be there. I had placed my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “important others”, and “Love, Dad” just didn’t seem quite enough. If my father knew then that he had been replaced, he never let it show. If he sensed any disappointment over valentines that didn’t arrive from me, he just tried that much harder to create a positive atmosphere(气氛), giving me an extra hug(拥抱) and doing what he could to make my day a little brighter. On Valentine’s Day eight years ago I received a card addressed to me in my mother’s handwriting( 笔迹). On the inside, my mother had printed “ Happy Valentine’s Day” and my father had signed “ Love, Dad”. It was the kind of card that put tears in my eyes because I knew this would be the last I would receive from him.His final card remains on my desk today. It’s a reminder of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a tradition(传统) of love with simple acts of understanding and had the ability to express happiness to the people in his life.31.Why did the writer think of her father as her “Valentine Man” over the years?a)Her father had given her a valentine on Valentine’s Day to show his love, understandingand happiness.b)She had placed her hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from her father onValentines’ Day.c)Her father created a positive atmosphere(气氛) and made her day brighter on Valentine’sDayd)She missed her father very much on Valentine’s Day after he died.32.When the writer grew older, her father’s card seemed less important because .a)she was no longer interested in Valentine’s Dayb)she thought her father’s valentine wasn’t enough and hoped to get more from othersc)her boyfriend took the place of her fatherd)she did not like the design of the cards her father sent her33.When the writer was disappointed about the valentines she did not receive, herfather .a)gave her another heart-shaped box filled with her favorite chocolatesb)tried to talk with her about something elsec)told her to place her hopes and dreams away from othersd)comforted her by doing what he could to make her happy34.Why was the writer’s last valentine written in her mother’s writing?a)Her mother wanted to show her love, toob)Her father was so busy that he had no time to mail the cardc)Her father was too ill to mail a cardd)Her father wanted to give her a surprise35.The writer put her father’s final card on her desk in order to .a)remember her father and his loveb)show it to her colleagues(同事)c)think of the past life of her fatherd)get encouragement from her fatherPassage FourPronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is an expert( 专家) in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even fairly proficient( 精通) at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the basic reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do native language is that they fail to understand the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill----one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be gained by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while realizing the importance of a good accent, often neglect(忽视), in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects(方面) of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique. It is also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship(关系)between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students’ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.36.What does the author say about pronouncing foreign languages?a)Every normal person is an expert in the skill of pronouncing foreign languagesb)It is difficult for people to pronounce foreign languagesc)No one is really an expert in the skill of pronouncing foreign languagesd)There are not many people who are even fairly good at it37.The writer argues that going about the problem of pronunciation in the wrong way isa)an obvious cause of not understanding the problem correctlyb) a result of not speaking wellc) a result of not understanding the problem correctlyd)not an obvious cause of speaking poorly38.According to the writer, teachers are likely to ignore .a)the practical techniques of teachingb)the importance of a good accentc)the teaching of spelling and grammard)the teaching of pronunciation39.What are the three important requirements for teachers in teaching?a)Attention, information, techniqueb)Time, knowledge, attentionc)Time, knowledge, techniqued)Information, technique, a clear mental picture40.Whether a student masters correct speech habits depends on .a)the teacher’s proper teaching techniqueb)the learning of grammarc)the knowledge of spellingd)the teacher’s teaching method for pronunciationIII.Vocabulary and Structure (15%)41.It is reported that more than two millions of people have been with the HIV virus inthe world within a year.A. reflectedB. infectedC. indictedD. responded42.There’s been a heated over the policy ever since it was introduced concerning bothpolitical and educational circles.A. correspondenceB. confusionC. controversyD. consideration43.We haven’t got any information about the attitude of our rivals(对手). However, French almost became the official language because of a war.The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this war is not accurate because the war was actually between England and France. The Indians fought on the side of the French.France and England were trying to gain control of North America. France held Canada, and England held part of what is now the United States. However, France tried to expand its land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. When the French built a fort on the Ohio River, the residents in Virginia sent George Washington to attack the fort in 1754. However, the French defeated Washington. The French, aided by the Indians, outsmarted the English and won many early battles. Later, the British began to do well against the French. In the final battle in Quebec, Canada, General Wolfe of England faced General Montcalm from France. Both generals died in this battle, but the English outlasted the French and won the battle. But something on the “outside” may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt(被子)or a blanket(毯子), have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow.So what you dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping and it may also use the wishes and interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and prisoners of freedom. There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams is not affected by everyone, but it offers an interesting way to look at dreams. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.36. Which of the following is something on the “outside”?A) Emotions. B) Memories. C) Feeling hungry. D) Wishes.37. For most interviews, the appropriate dress for a man is a conservative(保守的)dark colored suit with a long sleeve white or light blue shirt and conservative tie.Although hairstyle and dress are matters of personal taste, many personnel directors get first impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man’s long hair, sloppy dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.36.For whom is the passage most likely written?A.An employee. C.An interviewee.B.An employer. D.An interviewer.37.As the author suggests, what the applicant should know before the interview is_____.A.the type of work he wants and his career expectationB.his career objective a particular company will decideC.the reasons why a particular company wants to employ himD.all of the above38.Before the interview, the applicant should obtain some information about_____.A.most big corporationsB.the company he wants to work forC.reference books and periodicalsD.business and philosophy39.What the applicant wears,as the author suggests, can make him become_____.A.expressive rmativeB.impressive D.conservative40.What does the passage tell us through the example in the last paragraph?A.The importance of personal taste.B.The importance of public relations.C.The importance of self-confidence.D.The importance of a first impression.Section BDirections:In this section there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements.Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions orcomplete the statements with no more than10words.Questions41-45are based on the following passage.I am not a computer expert.I have been in the field for only a short time.I neverlearned much in the way of science or math. And I am quite puzzled by things like engineering or electronics. Then why am I able to write about computers?I can write on this subject because of these shortcomings. The last two years of learning have been an ordeal(考验)for me.By hard work I have managed to learn enough to use computers fairly well, and to work with people who know a great deal more than I.Since I have learned all this at such personal cost,I would like to share my knowledge with others.More and more people want to know about computers, and want to know quickly. The best way to learn is to take a course. However, many people do not have the time for this. They will have to find some other ways to get some basic information.I hope to be able to help them by writing about some of the things I have learned myself.I have a home computer on which I’ve learned in my own time.I have used it like a home study course.I have sat down with it day after day, night after night.I have forced it to give up some of its secrets. Now I can use it to do some of the work that I get paid for. Some things about computers are easier than you may think.First, computers are logical.Things that at first seem difficult will make sense to you after you learn the rules. Second,it is really not hard to learn enough to use today’s machines. You do not need to be a great brain. But you do have to learn to think in new ways. And you do have to keep a good bit of information in your head. Finally, there are many people around who are really enthusiastic about computers. These people are always happy to be of help.41.What are the subjects the author is poor at?______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________.42.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the article?____________________________________________________________________________________________________.43.What do people think of computers when they first begin to learn to use
